Jimmy Carter’s next goal is voting for Kamala Harris for president. (AJC)
The former president is ‘more alert and interested in politics’ in recent days, his family says.

As former President Jimmy Carter nears his 100th birthday, his milestone celebration isn’t on his mind.
Defeating Donald Trump is.
May you live to see that day, Jimmy. You are one tough cookie, so my money is on you.

@Adam L Silverman: Jimmy Carter?
Adam L Silverman
@zhena gogolia: Yep. Worked at the Carter Center, in the Middle East program, when I was an undergrad at Emory. Carter’s always been a class act and we should never forget he had an election stolen from him because Reagan and his campaign betrayed the country to the Iranians, cutting a deal so that the Iranians would not agree to release the hostages until after the election. Reagan and his people actually ensured that Americans would continue to suffer so that Reagan could get elected. Everyone involved, everyone who then took a political appointment in either Reagan administration, everyone who helped them, should have been dealt with appropriately.
That’s it for me. I only commented because I worked at the Carter Center over 30 years ago. I’ll go back to my own post and stay there. You can find me there if you want me.

As to the Mocking of Trump, I was really surprised at the MATERIAL changes in the headlines at WaPo, CNN and even the Vichy Times concerning the debate thing.
Why did it happen this time, when it hasn’t happened so many times before? And why everywhere, and so noticeably?
Is there some Revolt of the Front-Line Journos? Or did someone on Team Kamala call them in and tell them if they thought they weren’t given respect under Obama or Biden just damn well wait and see what’s gonna happen unless they change course and fast? Or or or … ?
Seems like there’s A Story there. Hmmm, who goes looking for stories, sort of as a profession?

Having led the campaign to eradicate the Guinea worm disease, Jimmy Carter now turns his gaze towards eliminating another worm for the benefit of all humanity.

When he does make it to the polling place, to cast his ballot, I hope to heck there is a HUUUUUGE crowd of patriotic Americans waiting outside to greet him, cheer him, and send the same message VP Harris is sending: WE. WON’T. GO. BACK.

Also, PAB will only debate Harris if she is bound and gagged before the debate begins.
Truth be told, I suspect no debate will ever happen. There’s no way Trump’s handlers want to let him get on stage in opposition to a highly experienced trial lawyer, whether in front of a Fox News audience or anywhere else.

They all got massively ratio’d and mocked on social media.

A couple few years ago, I reached out to the Carter Center to offer a heartfelt measure of gratitude for both President Jimmy and First Lady Rosalynn Carter in their roles as President and First Lady and their final act as humble servants for the sole benefit of others. It wasn’t 24 hours later that I received the kindest, warmest response. I’ll cherish that till the end of my lucky days.
I sure hope President Carter is able to hold on and cast that historic ballot.

@bbleh: Because Democrats are playing the game of politics more competently now than before. Starting with the decision to detach from protecting the legacy of Biden to assess whether winning would be more likely with a different candidate, to the campaign connecting better with culture, the way Harris fights back, and so on. The border ad could have been cut months ago under Biden, but wasn’t until 2 days after he was out. It’s a good ad – it puts Trump on the defensive. It’s playing politics competently instead of ceding the issue to him to talk about constantly.
Democrats keep demanding the media do the job of attacking Trump for them. When Democrats do it themselves, the media responds to that. It’s not hard to understand.

Harris has over 200 field offices open in WI, MI, PA, NC, GA, NV, and AZ. None in FL, OH, IA. Also none in VA and MN which some polls in early July had Biden losing.
These were probably lined up prior to Biden stepping down, so they may not yet reflect where the campaign feels Harris needs help or can expand the map. They have 360,000 people signed up to volunteer with the campaign. It sounds as though many of those offices hadn’t opened earlier due to a lack of volunteers. Trump is closing field offices the rumor being because he lacks volunteers, not because he lacks cash.

Trump attacks, do Democrats respond? Democrats attack, does Trump respond? Why won’t someone stop these constant swift boat attacks against John Kerry? Because it’s John Kerry’s motherfucking job to say something, which the press are happy to report. If you don’t say anything, they can’t report anything.
This doesn’t excuse some of the terrible headline writing, the passive voice shit, and so on. But Democrats have to learn that politics is a contact sport and play it as such.

Working as a peace corps volunteer in Mali in the early aughts, I was lucky enough to see Jimmy and Rosalyn twice as they made annual visits to check in on the Guinea worm eradication project. The Carters made a point of having the US ambassador throw a little reception for any peace corps folks in the area to come, and gave us a talk about how proud they were of us. Just lovely people, made us proud to be representing America during a dark time (bush years, Iraq war). I hope he can hang on to vote for Kamala!!

Class act that Mr. Carter. As a 12 year old in 1980 I couldn’t fathom how the American people could possibly prefer obviously fake, insincere buffoon Ronald Reagan to such a thoughtful, decent man. @Suzanne: My dad despised TCFG. He was 98 when TCFG was elected. We had a ritual every time I took him to the cemetery to take flowers to mom’s niche; he’d be walking with his walker, then pause to look around. I’d ask him what he was looking for, and he’d always reply “I’m looking for Trump’s grave so I can piss on it!” Sadly, Dad passed before TCFG, but I still giggle thinking of it. When TCFG is finally dead and buried, every time it rains on his grave, I’ll imagine it’s Dad peeing on TCFG’s grave.

It’s not even “basically”. I dropped a number of links a couple of weeks back about how basically the Orange Fart Cloud’s campaign is outsourcing all of it’s GOTV efforts to what is, to anybody else’s estimation, a grifting outfit.
Dems got this down in terms of process and organization, although that clearly varies *greatly* state-by-state. Plus all that non-Soros-everyday-people-monies that’s rolling in.
I know at least Felonious D’s bottom is 40% of the vote. Keeping it at 40-47% in the swing states (my vote is pointless but I don’t care) with our own processes in place gives one hope.

I think you’re mostly right about why they’re changing headlines now — because Harris’s campaign is doing a great job of punching back — but it’s also pretty clear the NYT political staff and for sure Sulzberger are in the tank for Trump. They have multiple Trump whisperers on staff who soften up anything he says, and they will print anything he says as if it’s true and only clean it up afterwards. There’s a willful gullibility that press isn’t supposed to have, unless the goal is a race to the bottom where the only thing is who can get away with the most blatant lies.
BR
I’m curious if Florida folks think there’s a chance to eke out a win for Harris and the senate seat given the abortion referendum on the ballot.

Ah, but is it news? I mean, if the Democrats win an unexpectedly large number of those races, it will doubtless be highlighted in the after-the-fact analysis. @BR: My dad was a Clinton man; and as such, he was rooting for Hillary in 2008. BUT once it was clear she wasn’t going to win the Democratic nomination, he put his heart and soul into embracing Obama. He was thrilled to help elect the first Black president into office – never expecting it would happen in his lifetime. He was devastated when TCFG beat Hillary – as he – as most of us did – expected to see the first woman – A CLINTON to boot! become elected. I was so worried about him. I don’t think outside of mom dying, I’d ever seen him so depressed. I know he’s “out there somewhere” doing everything he can to get Kamala elected as the first woman elected president – and her skin tone is just an added bonus in defeating TCFG.

Also Heaven help you if you are on the nightly call and you haven’t hit your targets.

@laura: My wife and I met President and First Lady Carter some years ago at the Carter Center. Both of them were very gracious, and though getting up there in years, still super-sharp. The First Lady and my wife spent some time discussing mental health issues and justice reform. I remember my wife being impressed that the First Lady was really on top of the latest on the issues, even though she’d been “retired” from daily activities for some time.

And how many of them would have been kept for another year? Even lower level staff? With salary plus benefits? Maybe 6. IOW not enough to make a goddamn difference. Perspective is important!

@BR: I’m volunteering with the local Democratic office in Florida. Many, many people are volunteering for the party now. I believe there is the same excitement for Kamala Harris here as in the rest of the country. Also we have a pro-choice measure and a marijuana legalization measure that are both polling high. And a good candidate against Rick Scott-Debbie Muscarsel Powell. So we have a chance to flip the state.

@Sallycat: I am concerned about the effects of the republican legislature’s new voter suppression laws.

@Adam L Silverman: The Carter Center is one of our donations. We greatly respect the work done there. Great to hear you have a connection to it. (Also I read your daily Ukraine posts and am grateful to you for them.)
