Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Come on, man.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

When we show up, we win.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I am so very relieved to hear the VP selection has been made because the usual idiots on twitter are turning this into a contentious litmus test, with loud proclamations about something whatever candidate they don’t like has done wrong. Here’s where I stand- I’m fine with any of them, I’d really like Tim Walz, but if she chose cancer as her running mate I would still low crawl over broken glass while naked to get to the polls to vote for Kamala, and this is in a red state where she won’t even crack 40%. So anyone with a purity test can go fuck themselves.

Breyana’s parents are at their cabin, so she is here tonight. We are making tacos and watching movies.

I’ll have more when I am inspired. Feel like the House of Dragons finale was anti-climactic.

*** Update ***

I remember what I wanted to ask. Will the google decision loosen their stranglehold on online advertising?

Now that I know that both Mark Penn and Nate Silver have decreed that the choice must be Shapiro, I’m afraid I have no option but to be whole-heartedly on Team Walz. Although, Team Anyone Who Hasn’t Fucked a Couch is definitely an option.

I SAW MY FIRST CYBERTRUCK TODAY!!!

We are out on the Outer Banks for a few days. Pulled into the parking area at the beach, got out of the car, and started walking with a group of about 20 others down the pathway over the dunes. Then a Cybertruck came, driving off the beach down the path, headed back the way we came.

The entire group started laughing uproariously. Absolutely fucken ridiculous.

I’m Team Walz, but I’ll take Shapiro. I’ve been told by my betters on my TEEVEE that it’s down to those two. Hell, I’ll take JD’s spurned couch if that’s what she decides (she never would). I’m anxious as a kid on Christmas eve, but I’m willing to wait a day.

    @schrodingers_cat:

My understanding of the UK situation is that using a stabbing as a pretext, some far right influencers whipped up a hatestorm online attacking immigrants and sent mobs to attack mosques and locations that asylum seekers were being housed. And then a bit of everything else — they burned down libraries, stores, looted, attacked police, etc. Lots of good-hearted folks have started turning out to counter them, and the UK is cracking down hard on the far right as it should. They’re even freeing up space in jails by accelerating release of low level offenders.

I don’t care who it is except I really want to keep my governor.  There is no question that I’m voting for her.

Since I haven’t been around much, I haven’t seen if anyone has mentioned streaming The Decameron.  I’ve heard some talk about it on one of my podcasts.  They noted that it’s not a very faithful version but that it was great fun.  It’s crazy to remember this but I had a world lit class in high school with a very cool teacher with a terrible name, Ms. Crabbe.  One of the books we read that year was The Decameron.  Pretty shocking when I look back but it was the 70s and things were very permissive in my little corner of suburbia.  I enjoyed that class very much.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has seen any of it because I really need a second opinion before I commit.  Tony Hale is one of the stars and I loved him in Veep.

@BR: Weird, this BBC article describes it as violent protests.

Two nights of violent protest in English towns this week, following the knife attack in Southport, reveal how today’s far-right is organising in the UK.
A BBC analysis of activity on mainstream social media and in smaller public groups shows a clear pattern of influencers driving a message for people to gather for protests, but there is no single organising force at work.

It even does a “not all protesters” line.

Not everyone attending these protests or posting about the Southport attacks holds fringe views, supports rioting or has links to far-right groups. The protests also appeared to draw in people concerned about violent crime or misled by the misinformation that the attack was linked to illegal immigration.

You must be seeing one with a different point of view.

This one does show a potential future for riots here and elsewhere spawned by false reports and fueled by “influencers”.  Like our January 6 manifested across a country.

Yeah, there are warnings about that in the user’s manual. Basically don’t expose it to rain, snow, tar, grease, or dust, and if you do, wash it immediately, but don’t wash it in direct sunlight, and if you use a car wash remember to put it in car wash mode first.

@schrodingers_cat:  What is happening in the UK is pretty much the exact same as the USA’s January 6.  Their side lost the election, they have demagogues encouraging them on social media, and they’re using the Southport stabbings as an excuse to have a giant violent tantrum.  And much like January 6, when they’re arrested and facing a judge and prison time they get all tearful and shocked that there are real consequences.

I’d also note that this is almost all in England and Belfast.  They tried it on for Cardiff but it came to nothing, and there’s been none in Scotland.

I live in Camas WA which is an affluent suburb of Portland so I see a few around here.  One turned up at my daughter’s HS this spring.  Seriously, some kid got one from Dad to drive to HS.  Or maybe the Dad got one and was too embarrassed to drive it himself.  That’s a possibility too.  My daughter said he was already a douche and the Cyber truck didn’t help.  It made him worse and most definitely only achieved laughs from the girls, not the admiring stares he wanted

What is surprising when you see one in the wild is (1) how damn big they are, and (2) how crude they actually are.

    @schrodingers_cat:

In Bangladesh, the protests were started over Civil Service quota’s being changed. The quickest path into the Middle Class there for a University Student, is to “win” a Civil Service job. Every minority and majority has an assigned quota. Everybody had their quota’s reduced, except for the group that supported Pakistan in the Civil War, ( and committed acts of genocide). They got theirs increased.

The Government restored the previous quota’s, but not before the protests had reached critical mass, and dozens of protestors had been killed and hundreds injured by Police and Military.

By the time the Government caved, the protests had grown to include more issues than the quota system and in general, frustration with a Party that has “ruled” Bangladesh for the last 15 years with a heavy hand.

The protests grew, and now, the President has resigned and fled to India and the Government is promising a “Government of National Unity”, which of course, few believe will happen.

Students were worried about their job prospects and started protesting against the large fraction of government jobs reserved for people with connections to the battle for independence.

Government cracked down on the protesters, killing several.

Protests got larger, students upped their demands.  More protesters killed.

Students began demanding that the PM (who has been in office for 15 years and is the daughter of a previous PM) resign.  More protesters killed.

It came to a head today.  She’s gone – fled to India.

    Corrections welcome.

Hopefully he’ll get tapped for a job by Harris if he wants it, he’d be great as head of the EPA. I voted for the front-running Democrat, fairly confident he’ll do the usual ritual stomping of whoever the GOPers hork up.

Nationally, put me in the Walz camp also, but of course I’ll vote for Harris/Shapiro.

@Suzanne:    I SAW MY FIRST CYBERTRUCK ... Absolutely fucken ridiculous.

Indeed.   I live just off the main road that goes out of Austin to the Tesla plant out east of town, so I see a LOT of those monstrosities, maybe 3-4 times a week.  They don’t surprise me anymore, I just shake my head, and hope the driver sees me doing so.

But last week is saw a first-  some idiot bought one of those things to use as his work vehicle.  He had either a wrap or a paint job, lime green/chartreuse with his business name in block letters.  It was a pressure washing business, so he needs to haul his tools around.  But here’s the capper- his tools barely fit in the cargo space, and the handles were all sticking out hodge-podge!  It was one of the most pathetically ridiculous things I’ve ever seen.

There’s no turning back on the VP choice once it’s made—Harris has clearly gamed out the implications of whoever she chooses.

Remember how when all those Dems were going in front of cameras and saying that Biden should drop out and it was assumed that Nancy Pelosi had orchestrated the whole thing?

    She says no.
”No, I wasn’t the leader of any pressure [campaign],” Pelosi told CBS. “Let me say things that I didn’t do: I didn’t call one person. I did not call one person. I could always say to him, ‘I never called anybody.'”
This can be read one of 3 ways:

    1.  Occam’s Razor:  She is telling the truth.  She didn’t have anything to do with the pressure campaign to force Biden out.
    2.  She is telling a carefully curated version of the truth.  Like, “Yeah, I didn’t call anybody… because I spoke to them all in person”
    3.   She is lying through her teeth Because Reasons.

@Princess:  ABC News a good enough source?

In a conversation with streamer and influencer Adin Ross, former [president] Trump brought up an old, false theory that former Cuban President Fidel Castro is the father of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“They say he’s the son of Fidel Castro and could be. Anything is possible in this world,” he said, before saying that Trudeau has become more progressive and that a conservative candidate would be able to defeat him.

The Canadian government has denied this story in the past. Trudeau’s parents never visited Cuba until several years after Trudeau was born.

The comment may come across as an insult of a critical national ally. Relations between the U.S. and Canada faced moments of tension during the Trump administration after the former president suggested new tariffs against Canada and he and top aides assailed Trudeau as a “weak” and “dishonest.”

Might sound like a hot take but this season should’ve been seven episodes if it wasn’t going to be 10. That ending with Rhae and the dragons was so cold and a good ending point compared to tonight with 11 cliff hangers. #DemThrones #HouseOfTheDragon

@DougL: There’s a joint called La Mi Venta that has its seating in a sort of cellar below street level about a block from the Royal Palace of Madrid. Delicious. Wonderful grilled fish. (The Royal Palace itself is a spectacular thing to see.)

Also, the museum restaurant of the Reina Sofia Museum has slow service but is actually amazingly good.

When I was there, there was a terrible heat wave in progress that made it hard to do much outside, but we still walked around Retiro Park a little and it was a beautiful place with some art museums right in the park.

@BR: Starmer before he went into politics was Director of Public Prosecutions. In 2011 there was widespread rioting after the police shooting of a Mark Duggan in Tottenham. Think of the fury over over George Floyd’s murder plus right wing racist nutjobs joining in to inflame it as only they can. The tories weren’t doing a great job of handling it ( not surprising given the man on the spot* was Boris Johnson as Lord Mayor of London) The police made 3,000 arrests nationwide in the first 3 days alone and the courts were collapsing under the strain. Starmer stepped in by prioritizing rapid prosecutions over going for long sentences and restarted a stalled criminal justice system. He’s probably going to do the same here

Fun fact, he’s a fellow alumni of mine.

Depressing fact he graduated 3 years after me . Now that makes me feel old**

    * By on the spot I mean he was on holiday

** AFAIK I never met him

    Daughter: “I’m vegetarian.”
    W: “Turkey then.”
    D: “Turkey’s meat.”

@M31: his daughter should have told him that she wanted one of Sara’s Tipsy Pies instead (they have some vegan options). I’m going to miss going to the Minnesota State Fair with my mom this year, as I would fly in and we’d go together. I’d download the State Fair app beforehand and search for all the vegan food to make sure that I could find something to accommodate my allergies.

Now my parents have moved to Indiana so we will have to figure out a different mother-daughter thing.  Maybe I can get her to come out to the East Coast for the Maryland or Virginia State Fair, or the Maryland Alpaca Festival in November. Although it may turn into an outing with my sibling and my godson as well…

And the Indiana State Fair has to list in its vendor rules, no Confederate flags and swastikas. I don’t even recall seeing that for the Maryland or Virginia State Fair competition rules, and I just went and read the vendor rules for the Maryland and Virginia state fairs, and no specific callouts that Confederate flags and swastikas are banned (although it seems to be implied in Virginia’s vendor rules).  So I think trying to get mom to the East Coast might be better…

@lamh47: This is why they were focusing on Biden. It was a tell. It was all about inoculating Trump. Any report of Trump’s decline would then just be treated as a retort rather than an issue in its own right.

It’s a great example of the lie the media tells themselves about the righteousness of their “both sides” framing since, at worst, it was a grand opportunity for the media to both sides the hell out of two old and aging candidates. Instead, they focused on one, for months. The one that had slowed down, not the one with noticeable signs of “not being all there”.

@I gotta get out of this place: I’ve been seeing more of them.  Looking at them, the matte finish makes them look like old beater cars. And their length and width makes it look like an old man’s car, not a futuristic evolution. It’s like a 1978 Buick LeSabre mated with a 1977 Buick Century. It’s for old men who miss the mid-70s boats.  My dad had a LeSabre. I had to learn to drive in it. I do not miss it. But probably a lot of guys over 60 are like “hell yeah! does it come with a Vinyl roof?

That they even aspire to Broderism is a lie.

And what kind of voters go for Walz? Everyone else?

Harris/Walz for the pragmatic who care that shit actually gets done after the election. That Biden’s legacy is fulfilled and Harris’ promise is realized. A VEEP Goodhair landslide doesn’t do much good if they spend the next 4 years kneecapping their boss and acting like a know it all.
