What a difference a day makes! Here’s the little peninsula that juts out into the river in front of our house (Pendejo Point) shortly after 6 PM yesterday as the hurricane was moving up the coast:
Here it is today after a foot of rain overnight:
Our river had plenty of excess capacity, unlike the Suwannee, which is getting pounded by the storm now in a way that has my relatives who live on it in a tizzy. (We are a riparian people.)
Please overlook our cruddy screens! It’s tough to keep them clear in the Mildew State.

How about someone puts together a thread with some of the best Olympics clips?

Can feel the humidity from here.

I heard on the radio that 45 million people (going up to NYC) are under flash flood watch. I can barely comprehend a figure like that. Stay safe, Betty and East coast peeps!
Scout211
Wow. That’s a lot of water. I’m glad your house is on stilts!
How does your road look right now?
Stay safe (and dry) Betty!

Pendejo Point? Ahahahahahahahahahaha! That’s just the greatest name, ever!

My parents are currently on a mission trip to Georgia, and they’re having some slight leaking in their RV. But they’re really worried about their home outside of Charleston, and probably won’t get back to it till Friday at the soonest. They don’t have to worry about flooding, but I know there’s a lot of concern about the sheer amount of water that’s going to be dumped in the area, and there’s a lot of fear about widespread flooding in the Charleston area. Fingers crossed type deal.
@Urza: because people don’t want that, as a number of people don’t watch anything until the 8pm recap show. Basically, no spoilers please! But there’s been some great shit happening today.
MazeDancer
Holey moley!
But seems like your raised house and porch were built, literally, to withstand the storm. This is good.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
Does this mean the bubbas on their airboats can now just motor right up to your front porch, noise and all?
:)
If you need to start a GoFundMe account to purchase rocket launchers for such an occurrence, put me down for $50.

Remain engrossed in A Family at War (British series) on Prime. Hearing “She’s a bitch” said on an early 1970s program quite shocking.

@Scout211: We didn’t leave home today but have heard the road is passable in a sturdy vehicle.

It’s amazing to me how high water can change a landscape.
As for mold/mildew, I don’t know that we have it as bad here on the MS Coast, but it can’t be too much better.
Yesterday afternoon/evening, we had several torrential downpours. The radar showed it was (arguably) one of the WAAAAY outermost bands from your storm (all the weather is circulating counterclockwise).
Today, air is dry, wind coming from the N/NE and hot. Temp readout on the car said 100 as I was driving on I-10 home from work.
Scout211
It doesn’t bother me because I watch videos and recaps on the NBC app all day long, but I have noticed that Eastern time zone jackals start discussing the events when the prime time show airs in the east even though it doesn’t air in the west for three more hours. I don’t see it as a big issue though.
I’m so old I can remember when the network that was airing the Olympics could place an embargo on the results until the events aired in prime time. That will never happen again.

@Nukular Biskits:
Naive question from a California perspective: does stuff get moldy / mildewy really easily in Florida / Gulf Coast because of the humidity and rain?
Scout211
@Betty Cracker: Our road used to be dirt. Then one owner was forced to pave part of it to be able to sell some parcels of her 40 acres. Then the rest of us chipped in and paved the rest of the road. Now I can hardly remember how hard it was to drive on that dirt road after a big rain. Luckily that’s not often in NorCal. LOL.
Again, stay safe Betty.

Bunch of big, black SUVs just filmed rolling out of Walz driveway.
Who knows.

I think Central Virginia will get some rain out of this storm, on Thursday. We need it.

Mar-a-Lago underwater?

@MazeDancer: Whoa! That’s a lotta big black SUVs! A big hint?
I guess we need to see the footage from in front of Shapiro’s house. The house with the most big black SUVs is the winner!
Darn!

Stay safe, Betty C and the rest of you Florida jackals! This storm is changing the plans for our anniversary vacation. We were going to go to Chincoteague VA but now we’re looking at NYC instead. The beach and national wildlife refuge won’t be that fun this weekend because of the rain.

@MazeDancer: A decoy! We discussed this earlier thread😉
But, if black SUVs aren’t simultaneously leaving Shapiro’s or Kelly’s homes…

Wow! Glad you and the family are safe. When I see all of that water all I think is skeeters!
I feel sorry for Savannah and Charleston and those areas. I think it was some official in Savannah who said that they are looking at a 1,000 year flood.
I’ll never forget those photos from Houston after Harvey. I had no idea that it was even possible to rain that much.

I’m glad you got water and didn’t get the brunt of the storm.

Hey Betty Cracker! Glad to see your post, and since I’ve started my postcard writing effort doing something to support the Pinellas* County Dems, I send you a wave as I do it!
* I am pretty sure you are in a different county and I am very pro privacy, I just figure you know where the place is & can celebrate them doing something to harness volunteer support from all over.

@BR:
The short answer? Yup.
I’ve only been to BettyC’s neck of the woods maybe only a couple of times but the air there in the summer time is literally (okay, figuratively) thick enough to cut with a knife.
Rare is a day during the summer months (which extend into September) when the humidity is less than 60%-70%.
Having visited Southern Cali, I can understand your disbelief. LOL.
jonas
Absolutely pissing rain here in central NY. Starting to look like BC’s place it feels like. Temps dropping rapidly though which is a welcome change! Been in the high 80’s this week with heat indexes way up in the 90 s

@NotMax: “Bitch” was not an obscenity in the 1960s and 1970s. My math professor used it freely in the 1960s (this problem is a bitch), and sometimes in the 1960s there were “bitch-ins” on campus. I did not realize until I used it in front of my children in the 1990s that its status had changed. It’s the only mild expletive I know of that got less acceptable in polite company.

A basking shark swam into a cove near here today. What a thrill. They are HUGE: “23–28 ft in length with some individuals reaching 30–36 ft. The average length of an adult is around 26 ft ” (wiki). This one looked well over 26 ft. At first people thought it was a whale. I hope it’s OK and just came in to feed.
Have never before seen a shark in the wild. Coincidentally I just signed up for the Sharktivity app three days ago (it only shows great white appearances) can’t hurt to have it for swimming.

Today was fun. Library not closed despite flood & flash flood warnings ( not watches) along with tornado & tropical storm watches. Network & phones constantly going down. Round here Debby started up around 9:30 am yesterday, and it finally stopped raining around 2 this afternoon. Not a powerful storm but a very, very wet one. A colleagues son’s house has 3 ft of water in it. At our house we never lost power but did lose internet for about 6 hours
Most ironic bit personally. At work I keep a spare set of clothes in my office in case of getting caught in a pop up storm. My ceiling leaked, right into my bag of spare clothes
