Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

People are complicated. Love is not.

T R E 4 5 O N

We are aware of all internet traditions.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Just caught the tail-end of the Harris – Walz rally, and wow, Walz hit it out of the park! He talked about freedom and the common good and hit themes that will likely appeal to normies, e.g., that people should mind their own damn business. He even worked in a reference to the sofa-shagger’s online notoriety, saying he was looking forward to debating JD Vance — that is if Vance “gets off the couch and shows up.”

I wish I’d heard more of Harris’s speech; I tuned in just when she was handing it off to Waltz, who thanked her for bringing back the joy. Anyhoo, I thought he was terrific, and I look forward to acquiring a fresh set of bumper stickers. Check out the rally vid if you missed it!

They were both pitch-perfect — as, by the way, was Josh Shapiro, who did 10-15 minutes before introducing the candidates. Talk about class! Talk about graciousness! He must be very disappointed at some level that he didn’t get the VP nod, but he couldn’t have given Harris and Walz a warmer welcome. I loved every minute. So fucken proud to be a Democrat.

This may be something that is a little bit out there, but people were worrying about PA. Watching Shapiro, I don’t think we have to worry. He will pick up PA and carry it on his shoulder across the finish line if need be.

Okay, that wasn’t the little bit out there thing I was talking about.

I think Walz will not only cement the upper Midwest, MN, WI and MI. I would like to see the team make a push for TX with him as the main spokesperson. HS football is holy in TX. I really think he could elevate the turnout and votes. Also, team up with Allred as 2 football buddies. The latest reputable polls I can find have Cruz and Allred in a statistical dead heat.

I know it’s a long shot, but a small investment of time and money could have big returns.

We’ve discussed this before, but for the third consecutive week Kamala’s campaign has sucked all the oxygen from the room. No one is talking about Trump or Vance except as the jokes they are (at least on social media) and all the lights and cameras are on the Democrats as they show the country fresh new faces that elicit excitement and energy.

Dems have caught Trump and the GOP wrong-footed AGAIN, and the excitement and the interest will remain on Harris/Walz as we head into the convention, in which the Dems will hold all the attention for another 10 days or so.

NEW — Trump World quietly fueled last week’s anti-Shapiro whisper campaign another
@MarcACaputo scoop.“So the Trump campaign and its allies moved to quietly kneecap Shapiro. It did so by forging a de facto alliance with the enemy of its enemy, the progressive left, which opposed Shapiro—the only Jewish candidate on Harris’s shortlist—largely because of his pro-Israel stances. The result was a swelling of progressive opposition (some of it organic, some artificially fed) that, among other things, saw Shapiro’s online critics dub him “Genocide Josh.”

“Where we could, we amplified the leftists on Twitter. We fed Shapiro oppo [opposition research] to the media. We did what we could to create more noise and discontent,” a Trump adviser, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe internal campaign workings, told The Bulwark prior to Harris making her pick on Tuesday.”

    Not surprising.

And guess what…Trump world ALSO was going to use the same “alliance” if Harris has chosen Shapiro.

This is Chump co trying to sew discord and save face…and try to sew discord between Jewish voters and Dems…wont’ work though…with Chump at the top of the ticket

Much as Obama or any other politician might like to think they are “above the fray”, politics is a bare-knuckled brawl of ideas, it always has been.

The idea that Democrats spent decades unilaterally disarming themselves has probably cost way, way more races than they dare admit to.

Walz and Harris can throw verbal haymakers in a way that is both honest, vicious, without stooping to the types of disgusting, phony lows the fascist right engages in.

What people may not know about Walz is that he was one of the most protective governors towards trans people, even protecting those coming from across state lines.

Also too, next Tuesday there’s going to be a Trans Folks for Harris Zoom call. I don’t expect it to raise the sort of cash we’ve seen from similar calls — because we’re much smaller in numbers, and the vast majority of trans people make far fewer than cis people thanks to job discrimination. But we’ll be there to support.

Exactly. That’s what the creator of the couch meme said:

Rick cites a few “highbrow” influences on the substance and phrasing of the X post, saying that he listed page numbers from “Hillbilly Elegy” that purportedly described the tryst as authors Jorge Luis Borges and John Fowles did to lend authenticity to their own fiction.

“It’s something I’ve found funny my entire life,” he said.

He also said the fictitious notion of Vance having sex with a couch cushions reveals what legendary German filmmaker Werner Herzog calls an “ecstatic truth,” which the legendary filmmaker describes as “a kind of truth that is the enemy of the merely factual,” encompassing falsehoods that “make some essence of the man visible.”

My courageous and brilliant 92 yo mother lived her last years in fear and anxiety because of the sewage spewed daily from Fox News. At the end of her life, we had to bury her hastily with few mourners in near-zero temps and heavy sleet during the height of Covid.  I will never forget……and never forgive……what damage Trump and his media enablers have wrought on my personal history and the history of this country.

So, yes, I really like the Walz pick. Like others have noted, many of us recognize in him the brother, father, grandfather, or other relative which we lost to Fox News and other right-wing propaganda. The bitterness goes bone-deep.

With Harris and Walz—and their unabashed warmth and authenticity,—we may have a chance to break this national sickness of cynicism, hate, and fear. Sweep the whole damn country on election day! Get ‘er done…

Walz would very likely irritate Elon.  I dint believe Elon is well loved in Texas.  He’s run roughshod over some communities.

    @Geoduck:

I missed those. Yep, they are on the job, whatever they perceive it to be.

@HumboldtBlue: 0-27 to State Champions in one year.  Walz has got some hard work, dreaming big, enthusiasm, and believing you CAN DO IT magic up his sleeve.  Just taking those kids in Nebraska, teaching them GIS, and getting them to predict the Rwanda genocide, probably more accurately than the adult experts was another “miracle”.  I believe he’s going to do miracles to the Democratic Party, and there are lots of great people in place who are ready.

@Sister Golden Bear: His statement that he knew it had to be the football coach and the military guy to be the Faculty Advisor to the Gay Straight Alliance.  He has wisdom and empathy.

@lamh47: I turn off MSNBC every time that sour Susan Glasser shows up. She can keep her Biden bashing to her own miserable self.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

Some really are about the entire country.

I’d bet that he fully understands that his career is not over, and by being positive – even as he didn’t get what he wants – he will likely either have a significant appointment or will be more than well enough appreciated by everyone involved because he looked beyond his own self interest that his career will have strength and position. It is after all about the country – NOT the individual. Sure we have to like the person enough to vote for them but this is a great ticket for President and Vice President and if Josh Shapiro is the person he seems to be, he will be rewarded in some way. He is 51 yrs old, he has time on his side.

    @Bill Arnold:

Shitforbrains has always been weirdly incompetent. He got a good education – and wasted it. He inherited a lot of money – and wasted most of it. He ran and won the presidency – and did worse than doing absolutely nothing. I believe that Websters will add to the meaning of worse than useless, the name – Shitforbrains

Also, completely opposite, there is a picture on a YouTube of Harris and Walz on stage and he really reminds me of Joe Biden. Maybe a younger Joe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8dyF0NwZrU

Thanks for the recommendation, Betty.  I enjoyed the heck out of the rally video.

And all day I’ve been cackling with glee as I learn more and more about Walz, delighting in how he will confound and annoy the Republican campaigns.

    All this and he’s a butter-carver, too!
