Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Let me file that under fuck it.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Republicans do not trust women.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Bark louder, little dog.

As A Father, Elon Musk Is “Daddy Dearest”

Every family has a designated weirdo and that was me.

But no matter how much of a knucklehead I was during my difficult teenage years, my family always supported me even though I knew they didn’t always understand where I was coming from. They always had my back, and I loved them for that.

I was blessed. However, some people aren’t so lucky. If the appropriate boxes aren’t checked off, they won’t get a helping hand but a slap in the face, and it hurts more when it’s coming from someone who says they love you.

To contrast and compare, let’s look at Elon Musk, the techbro zillionaire who can’t buy a clue.

Elon Musk contains multitudes. Unfortunately, they’re all bad.

Musk is a monstrous human being. As a dysfunctional parental unit, he’s a monster. Musk sees his children either as disposable props or punching bags.

In a recent interview with fellow nutjob Jordan Peterson, Musk babbled (again) about the infamous “mind woke virus” and how it “stole my son from me”.

Vivian Jenna Wilson pushed back against Musk’s nonsense. Hard.

“I think he was under the assumption that I wasn’t going to say anything and I would just let this go unchallenged,” she told NBC News in an interview published July 25. “Which I’m not going to do, because if you’re going to lie about me, like, blatantly to an audience of millions, I’m not just gonna let that slide.”

Wilson—whom Musk shares with ex-wife Justine Wilson—clapped back by saying she is entitled to make her own decisions when it comes to her identity and health.

“I would like to emphasize one thing: I am an adult. I am 20 years old. I am not a child,” she said. “My life should be defined by my own choices.”

Wilson—who filed to change her name when she was 18—also detailed her estranged relationship with Musk, which she said began long before she came out as trans at age 16.

Calling Musk “cold” and “quick to anger” during her childhood, Wilson alleged he was only present about 10 percent of the time.

“He is uncaring and narcissistic,” she said, recalling one “cruel” incident in fourth grade during which he allegedly berated her vocal tone. “He was constantly yelling at me viciously because my voice was too high.”

It’s difficult, awkward, and confusing to transition from being a child to a young adult, and the arguments that erupted at home usually resulted from me trying to figure things out and my parents trying to figure me out. But despite all of the generational drama, I knew that they loved me, and the invaluable support of my family throughout the years was the solid bedrock that helped me navigate the turbulent waters of my teenage years.

And no matter how bad it got at times, my mother and father never acted like they were ashamed of me. My mother and father never did to me what Musk did to his daughter.

There’s a line from a Law and Order episode that spills the tea about men like Musk:

“He wasn’t a father,” Jack McCoy said. “He just happened to be in the room when the child was conceived.”

I bet Ms. Wilson wishes Tim Walz was her Dad.

Musk was the sperm donor not a real father. His own father seems to be pretty toxic as well.

I used to follow Justine Wilson on LiveJournal around the time her marriage to Musk was fracturing. Her posts were eye-opening. She never really spoke out against him IIRC. But reading between the lines, it was obvious that he belittled her and her accomplishments—she had several books out at that time— constantly, to the point that she by all appearances believed it herself. He was and is poison.

My kid is trans, and just changed her name. It’s been an adjustment, but we’ve been 100% supportive. I cannot imagine being the kind of heartless monster that Elon is.

Adding, my kid and I have always lived apart, her in Montreal and me (mostly) in Philly. It was hard as FUCK to remain involved in my kid’s life, especially as a Person Of Not Much Money, but I’ve always done my best and tried to do the right thing. Elon has all the resources in the world,  and the dude wasn’t even involved in his kid‘s upbringing.

    what a piece of shit.

With any luck Wilson will find someone who will be the father she never had. People seemed to be hardwired that way.

But come to think of it, makes me wonder is this why all the whining about people with no children from the Right Wing fucktards: they afraid thier child is going to adopt one as surrogate parent and abandon their fuckup ass?

I agree with SC. Musk is not a parent. He is a sperm donor. He has children with many women that he never married, and he pressures women who do reach higher levels in his companies to have babies with him. He is pushing white-replacement theory fears that require him to have as many children as possible (racism) and he just thinks that it is his job to make as many babies as possible because he is the best human ever (narcissism.)

    Musk currently has 12 children.

The first six were by Justine.

There were two by Grimes through surrogacy (which is weird and also can have settler-colonial implications if brown women are asked to carry white babies for rich people who have all the equipment but can’t be bothered to carry their own children.)

Twins by Shivon Zilis, who met musk through OpenAI, and worked at both Tesla and Neurolink.

Another by Grimes and another by Zilis.

People keep deleting the TESCREAL article on Wikipedia, but it is a good framework for understanding what is going on at the top of some tech companies.

So they’re just all interviewing each other now? Because no one else will talk to them understands them, I take it? Is Trump going to interview Jordan Peterson, to close the circle?

I was in between Thin Black Duke and Vivian Wilson in how my family perceived me — closer to TBD really, but no I didn’t feel supported to just be. I was the “This IS SO a real job!” kid, except, y’know, it uncontroversially was, in that I was staying alive and keeping a roof over my head without asking them for money. It just wasn’t a livelihood they considered proper.

Offside is a simple rule, no body part of an attacking player can be behind the LAST defender when the ball is passed or the phase of play begins, or they are offside. That’s it.

Offside is one of the laws in association football, codified in Law 11 of the Laws of the Game. The law states that a player is in an offside position if any of their body parts, except the hands and arms, are in the opponents’ half of the pitch, and closer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent (the last opponent is usually, but not necessarily, the goalkeeper).[1][2]

Being in an offside position is not an offence in itself, but a player so positioned when the ball is played by a teammate can be judged guilty of an offside offence if they receive the ball or will otherwise become “involved in active play”, will “interfere with an opponent”, or will “gain an advantage” by being in that position. Offside is often considered one of the most difficult-to-understand aspects of the sport.[3]

@eclare: it’s a big defensive strategy where the back line sets the limit (actually last defender before their own goal…they move up to “catch” the opposing forward offsides at the moment of them reacting to the pass emanating from upfield). Assistant ref eyeballs it but allows play to continue if it’s close just in case their eyes deceive them and VAR verifies it either way.

    @HumboldtBlue:

The post-VAR ‘improvements’ to the offside rule have made it unfit for any purpose other than driving fans tonto loco and/or making sure teams from Manchester don’t lose games.

Here’s an idea. Most every player in the top leagues wears an undervest fitted with GPS sensors already. Why not just tag them all with a specific sensor right in the centre of their chest. If that sensor is goal side of the last defender’s sensor when the ball is kicked, the player can be said to have gained an advantage and is offside. If not, then it’s onside, even if a sliver of their trailing foot can be shown to have drifted 0.1mm in the wrong direction while running away from the goal.

It’s too simple, they’d never go for it. How would the incorruptible paragons of the PGMOL manage to ‘earn’ those Gulf State gigs if they didn’t have last call over what does or does not constitute offside?

No, specifically on the front of their chest. A lot of the anger with the more egregious offside decisions comes from players being penalised for a heel or a buttock being fractionally behind the defender even though their body position means they’re actually moving away from the goal and so not gaining an advantage.

If the front of your body is goal side of the front of the last defender’s body, all that nonsense goes away. It brings back ‘gaining an advantage’ as the deciding factor.

But if DJT and JDV have shared a stage other than the balloon drop, I sure can’t think of any. But then again, Trump isn’t really campaigning hardly at all.

@Mike E: it started with the Paris IOC judges having the incorrect difficulty level assigned to Jordan’s routine…that was why her score was revised.

Go back and look at Simone Biles routines, not all of them was perfect, but her difficulty levels for her routines is so high, that even a bobble or occasional out of bounds deduction doesn’t stop her from being a top scorer.

Jordan’s coaching team was right to ask for repeal of that score…No what happened here was basically on a 4 second technicality…i.e. the coaching team has 1min to ask for an inquiry after the score is given, the allegation is Jordan’s team waited 1 min 4 sec…a 4 sec TECHNICALITY!!

The actual quote came from Ben Stone, Assistant DA and later US Attorney, played by the awesome Michael Moriarity. It went something like this:

“Benny Williams wasn’t Pat’s father. He was just in the room when Pat was conceived.”

The episode was a murder trial involving the death of the father of a Major League baseball player, who originally was thought to have been killed by “Papa Doc,” the biggest bookie in Harlem. Instead, it came out that Papa Doc had nothing to do with Benny’s death; he’d tried to force his son Pat, the successful MLB player, to pay his gambling debts. The son pushed him; he hit his head on the way down and died. It was accidental manslaughter, not murder.

The final quote was describing just how very few shits Pat’s father gave about him, other than the money he was pulling in. Benny was nothing but a leech and a parasite, riding off his own son’s successful career to feed a gambling addiction.

Very reminiscent of Elon Musk and Trump himself.

@lamh47: lol OK I read on reddit that the staff at that event also played “Send in the Clowns” is that true? I mean, maybe that sound staff had their trump checks bounce already.

@eclare: So do it.  I triple dog dare you.

ETA: I have never had any desire to dye my hair any color, but I have always been partial to women with that odd shade of red that only Frenchwomen seem to use and also blue/purple.

Hey, we’re not perverts!  It’s just that most of us have an odd kick in our gallop.

So, just now driving down the freeway. I was getting ready to switch lanes and decide to let the car on the left pass me first.

I get a look and it’s the Batmobile, but from a version of Batman that was never animated because the producers thought the designs were too angular and abstract.

    @rikyrah:

I love him more everyday. I, too, have a working 8 track player (Capehart brand) just to play my Tony Orlando and Dawn.

    And, Crystal Gale.

Both the Capehart and the 8 tracks survived college dorm life and my Springsteen loving dorm mate.

Cue “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.”

@TBone: I doubt if she has the time, but wouldn’t it be great to have Harris cookbook merch.  I bet walz could add venison, pheasant and wild Turkey/duck recipes.  I’d buy it!

Simple. Once Musk got closer Mega wealth, he initiated a breeding program. I think he has 10 kids. Money CAN buy you anything… except time itself.  So he likely vetted these “partners” for traits he preferred….ethnicity/looks, docility/volatility etc.  Ol’ Vivian turned out to be quite the firecracker….Kharma, you lunatic pseudo-scientist !

If your family made you feel like a weirdo for being different from them then maybe they actually were not that great. I don’t think the so called “normal” people are always better than the people they seem “weird”.
