Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Peak wingnut was a lie.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

This fight is for everything.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

So many bastards, so little time.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

This blog will pay for itself.

(Nick Fuentes’ Wikipedia page)

No wonder the NYTimes is melting down — they’ll do their clenched upper-middle-class major-media-market best, but how can they properly catapult the propaganda without a steady golden shower of Kamala deepfakes, Tim Walz swiftboating, and sick dank memes?

(Pretty clear the Russian bot farms aren’t bringing the heat any more, either; seems like Putin may have more immediate problems than propping up what looks like an increasingly bad bet.)

Joe Rogan, Tim Pool, and Nick Fuentes have made public statements against Trump today. Something is afoot. https://t.co/57XDCHhkpg

— Dave Troy (@davetroy) August 9, 2024

RFK Jr allows them to pretend they’re against the system but bc he’s a fringe candidate it comes without the risk of backing a loser. And they don’t want to be tied to a loser. https://t.co/ufQgAhOQFu

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) August 9, 2024

He is a shell of his former self being propped up by foul little monsters even worse than he is. They’re not keeping him going out of loyalty, but because they see him as a vehicle to ram through every bit of regressive policy possible.

— Jean-Michel Connard ??? (@torriangray) August 9, 2024

Trump has always been bad but he's bad like a shark or a sinkhole. The people who prop him up are bad like bad *people* which are infinitely worse. https://t.co/i4SbW9Zw7K

Outside of the hardcore Trump supporters who already think the race is going to be stolen, a growing number of Republican voters who think the race is winnable are getting really frustrated by Trump's lack of message discipline.

It was always my hope – the more subtle he tried to get at obfuscating his hate, the more the most rabid haters would demand explicit and vocal HATE! TO ELEVEN!

Modern communication and ease of documenting words and pictures ruins the dog whistle.

I feel like I’m witnessing a political equivalent of that crappy MST3K episode of The Killer Shrews, we’re all swimming for the safety of the boat while on the island, they’re all starting to eat each other.

While the actual campaign and it’s ticket may be a loser, we have to remember we’re STILL also having to campaign against Russia, the MSM and the cabal of Tech Bros/NatC’s/Those who control SCOTUS.  It’s helpful to have such enemies, but the next three months is gonna be a misinformation feed fest and turd polishing seminar.

@piratedan: and it is all a prelude to the real “lawfare” being planned right now – election fuckery by so-called election officials and starting after election day the captured state legislatures. The fig leafs have been put in place, they just need an election close enough to doubt. CRUSH THEM INTO DUST and make any “legal” challenges moot though ridiculous denial of truth.

Chris Hayes asked why Trump is in Montana. He found that Trump wanted to make Ronny Jackson head of the VA, and Sen. Tester did an investigation into Jackson’s drinking and ambien use while on duty as White House physician and passing out prescription pills, and got that nomination stopped. Trump swore revenge on Tester.

Apologies if y’all mentioned this before, but the issue with the helicopter ride appears to be that we all look alike (NYT Gift Link):

Nate Holden, 95, a former Los Angeles city councilman and state senator, said in an interview with The Times that he had been on a helicopter ride with Mr. Trump around 1990 when the aircraft experienced mechanical trouble and was forced to make an emergency landing in New Jersey.

    […]

Mr. Holden said he was in his living room watching Mr. Trump’s news conference on TV on Thursday when the former president told of experiencing a brush with death on a helicopter ride with Mr. Brown.

“I said, ‘What the hell is this?’” Mr. Holden said. “‘Was he in two near-fatal helicopter crashes? He didn’t fix those damn helicopters yet?’”

Mr. Holden said that he called Mr. Brown to compare notes. Mr. Brown told him he had never been in a helicopter with Mr. Trump.

“I said, ‘Willie, you know what? That’s me!’” Mr. Holden said. “And I told him, “You’re a short Black guy and I’m a tall Black guy — but we all look alike, right?”

Mr. Holden gave his own height as 6-foot-1. “Willie has to be about 5-foot-6. Maybe 5-foot-5. He comes up to about my shoulders. And he’s bald. And I’m not bald.”

The orange fuckwit can’t tell two Black men apart but thinks he can tell if Harris is Indian or Black

Has the orange fuckopotamus lost The Times?

In an angry phone call to a New York Times reporter as he landed several hours away from his planned rally in Bozeman, Mont., because of a mechanical issue on his plane, Mr. Trump excoriated The Times for its coverage of his meandering news conference on Thursday at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and home, during which he told of an emergency landing during a helicopter trip that he said both he and Mr. Brown had made together…

“We have the flight records of the helicopter,” Mr. Trump insisted Friday, saying the helicopter had landed “in a field,” and indicating that he intended to release the flight records, before shouting that he was “probably going to sue” over the Times article.

When asked to produce the flight records, Mr. Trump responded mockingly, repeating the request in a sing-song voice. As of early Friday evening, he had not provided them.

Mr. Trump has a history of claiming he will provide evidence to back up his claims but ultimately not doing so.

Memories are a tricky thing. People often disagree about things they both experienced, like whether John came to that party at Betty’s place 10 years ago.

I personally have my doubts about Trump’s ability to remember things in a way that conforms to objective reality anymore.

Sometimes a person under a lot of stress tries to comfort themselves by trying to deny things that happened or remember bad things in a positive light or just lie about the past to themselves.

I mean Trump’s under a lot of strain from 34 felony convictions to his campaign being upended by Kamala’s candidacy to literally dodging a bullet.

Maybe his psyche spins up comforting lies to placate his fragile narcissistic ego.

He already does this by refusing to accept he lost the 2020 election.

It was also an apparently an attempt to bring up Harris and Willie Brown’s affair back in the day. I assume it was an attempt to dog whistle the “those people are lust crazed animal” trope, which is rich coming from a guy who was disappointing a sex worker while his wife was pregnant.  Instead Trump managed to make himself look like a complete idiot.

Saw the following headline at CNN just now, only I misread “tornadoes” as “tomatoes.”

At least 1,450 tornadoes have been reported this year in the contiguous US. See where they’re clustered

I was thinking to myself, “WTF? We produced at least 1,450 tomatoes in our yard!”

I should go back to bed…

I would hesitate to accuse Trump of having intent since it implies Trump is capable of forethought.

Trump is very smart. He’s someone who is very good in a very narrow set of skills, like many scientists and artists.

He’s a genius at self promotion. He’s great at figuring out what plays to a certain type of crowd.

He remade the Republican Party to cater to his agenda. Instead of free trade, Republicans are now pro tariffs.

He’s fully capable of letting his terrible intentions become policy, like family separation, the Muslim ban, a failed coup, etc.

I think that this is the intent of the analogy.  The idea is that Trump is a reflex level, thoughtless type of cruel racist asshole.  He is being manipulated by the calculatedly evil.  I personally don’t think there’s a difference just because Trump plans less.

I’m wondering if this is the point.  Haberman built her disgusting platform of normalization with access.  If all he’s giving her is abuse, there is no longer money in it for her to suck up to him.

As for the abuse, this is an established Trump thing he’s gotten more intense about lately.  It infuriates him when he takes a racist dump publicly and the public reaction is he’s a fucking idiot.  His pride is wrapped up in his belief that these speeches are perfect and genius oration.  The press conference was supposed to show everyone how much smarter and wiser and more charming he is than Harris/Walz.

A follow-up to a news report I posted yesterday. It was from Andalou Agency by way of Levent Kemal, about a statement by Iran’s UN representative. Axios reporter Barak Ravid posted a fuller text yesterday:

Breaking: The Iranian delegation to the UN issued a statement stating that achieving a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is Iran’s top priority.

“Any agreement that is acceptable to Hamas will be acceptable to us. The Israeli regime violated Iran sovereignity in its latest act of terrorism. We have the right to self-defense. However, we hope that our response will be carried out in a timely manner and in a way that will not harm the potential ceasefire,” the Iranian delegation said.

This statement was likely approved by the office of Supreme Leader Khameini which controls Iran’s major foreign policy decisons.

On Thursday President Biden and the leaders of Egypt and Qatar issued an “invitation” to Israel and Hamas to meet in either Cairo or Doha this Thursday to finalize a ceasefire deal. The three leaders’ “invitation” had elements of an ultimatum:

“No more time should be wasted, and there should be no excuses by any party for further postponement.”

So for now, Iran seems to be forgoing it’s promised retaliation strikes pending the outcome of these talks.

This will be a busy week for diplomats. The US will also host talks in Switzerland between the two opponents in Sudan’s terrible civil war.

There is another, less acute conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia over the status of Somaliland, and Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will host talks this week between representatives of Ethiopia and Somalia. This round of talks was originally set for September but apparently enough progress has been made already to move them up.
