JD did most of the Sunday shows today and didn’t say much that will stick, as far as I can tell. His interview with Dana Bash showed him dancing around topics like weird, where he said that Walz is weird because of the way he hugged his wife at the rally. The response to that is obvious:
Is this your dad? https://t.co/BQNMgqOYit https://t.co/U6X5HBdWB9
— Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts) August 11, 2024
As you can see, JD is workshopping Walz hits with Don Jr, always a sign that the Trump campaign is going in the wrong direction. JD also said that Walz isn’t “comfortable in his own skin”. Jesus Christ, I’ve never seen a politician more comfortable with who he is than Walz. This, and the “stolen valor” of 24 years of service in the National Guard, are just non-starters. As much as the media would love to run with a “balancing” story about Walz, Trump and Vance haven’t offered up anything.
He also spent a long time saying “let’s talk about real issues” when Jonathan Karl asked him about Trumps bullshit accusation that Walz wanted to kidnap kids for gender reassignment, while basically repeating the charge, as Karl pointed out that Trump had said it at his rally in Montana.
If you want to see more, the KamalaHQ feed has a few of the “highlights”.
Part of JD’s problem is that he’ll never have an interview that isn’t derailed by the crazy shit Trump says, as Buttigieg points out:
Meanwhile, Trump is just melting down over crowd size:

Sitting here watching the Olympics closing ceremony.
Now that the Olympics is over expect the hit jobs against Harris/Walz to come full speed. Now that the “distraction” of the Olympics is over, the political media hit jobs will get fresh air now that more people might be paying attention, especially in the lead up to DNC.

Speaking of no Olympic distraction, I can finally finish some of the planning for my trip to Maui in November. BTW, if anyone of the BJ’ers have any suggestions, let me know. My travel crew is 5 people (4 adults and 1 teen, goddaughter Maddie), 5 days totaly Nov 1-Nov 6. I know I want to got Road to Hana (but I’d prefer NOT to drive) and I was told I need to go to Mama’s Fish House (booked reservation already), but still need to decide where to go for my birthday.
I’ve already got my reservations for a hotel and rental car, but I’m 100% open to changing that if I find better. The issue I have is I’m afraid of going for a vacation rental and getting closer to the date and getting it cancelled (happened to me before).
Sooo send me suggestions BJ!
(FYI: I decided on Maui after researching and seeing many local asking for tourist to come, just be respectful. Being from NOLA, I understand what happens to a place where tourism is it’s primary economy, after a disaster. Even if you want peace, the city needed the tourist dollars to survive.)

I just think it’s funny (and also pathetic) that trump considers “cheating” to be both a) anything someone does to prevent him from ruling the world and/or being acknowledged as the greatest human being in history, and b) a 110% ‘tell’ as to what he himself is doing (or at least would like to do, if he could) to cheat.
(also maybe c) completely made-up shit? I dunno. However, I know he doesn’t know, either)
I know it’s early and we’ve gotta run through the finish line but man the next 85 days just might make up for the last eight years.

@lamh47: Where are you staying? You can’t do Road to Hana without driving, not sure I understand what you’re saying. It’s not that scary, honestly the drive up to the peak of Haleakla was scarier (invest in some guard rails, county of Maui!). Road to Hana is about an hour starting from Pa’ia, where we stayed. I liked the plantation tour we did, but YMMV. Also go to the top of Haleakla, that was cool. Be sure to take a jacket for that. I’m not sure if they’re doing whale watching, that’s over by Lahina. Have fun, it’s a beautiful place you won’t want to leave
There’s a place called Ocean Vodka where they make their own spirits that was beautiful. We went there on our second trip. If you like that kind of thing it would be worth it.

There’s this podcast called “Know your enemy”, put on by a couple of intellectual leftists, one of whom is a convert from right wing lunacy. Kind of like Ron Pearlstein’s books on the rise of conservatism in podcast form.
They recently read Hillbilly Elegy, as a springboard for understanding the evolution of JV.
The former right-winger deeply dislikes (“hatred is not a Christian value”) JV, since, well, they had parallel upbringings, all the way to the point of adult conversions to Catholicism, and he considers JV’s path to be simply despicable — particularly in the way he shat upon his Appalachian relatives.
One thing they noted that comes out of Hillbilly Elegy is JV’s search for a father figure, and his chameleon-like morphing into a mirror of the father figures he latched onto through life. They track some of JV’s post-Elegy writings and track the phenomenon through to the present. Maybe there’s a reason Don Jr. can relate to him.

@lamh47: love Maui, and I’ve been there twice. Will defer to Not Max on where to stay. I’d usually stayed in Lahaina and haven’t been back since the fires.
Fun activities to consider, depending on your interests, include –
1. Haleakala sunrise. Coming from the Midwest, I would always do it day 1 so the early wake up didn’t feel as early. I think you’re Pacific Coast, so not sure how much time zone benefit you’d get. I think you need reservations as well.
2. Maui wine/beer – if I remember right, both of these are more South Maui, and can be fun trips, tours, and tastings.
3. Io Valley State Park – central Maui, with the spelling by memory so might be a little off. Fun for hiking and exploring.
4. Beach time – including snorkeling. Lots of historical options north of Lahaina or in South Maui. Great stuff to see just off shore.
5. If you’re a Costco member, they used to have a helicopter trip deal where you could fly over or near other Hawaiian islands. Also, if you have a Costco membership, it’s a great price to get gas for the rental car (though long lines).
Happy travels
Eta – can recommend Tim with Tiny Bubbles Scuba, too. Great price – no boat needed – and he graded my open water swims on my first Maui trip to get me certified as a scuba diver.
raven
@lamh47: We rented a junker like this. The conventional wisdom is that the regular rentals stick out like a sore thumb and are easy to identify by their plates. The Hana Highway and Mount Haleakalā sunrise are crucial. You’ll be so trashed by the time change that going up for the sunrise early in the trip make it easier but you have to have a reservation.
Suzanne
There was a good recent episode of “Know Your Enemy” about JD Vance. They did a deep dive on Hillbilly Elegy and pointed out that a constant theme of his life was trying to ingratiate himself and align his interests and personality to whomever his father figure was at the time. Make of that what you will.
lamh47
@Soprano2: I donot want to do the drive myself. I’ve gotten an SUV rental, but TBH I don’t really want to do that drive. I’m 100% open to a private tour driver.
ETA: Right now we are staying at Maui Coast Hotel. in Kihei, but I’m willing to change that.
BR
@lamh47:
In Kihei there’s an amazing fruit stand (I think it’s called Yee’s Orchard or Yee’s Fruit Stand or something). Great variety of tropical fruits. If they have Jamaican Passionfruit — get as much of it as you can, it’s amazing and is impossible to find anywhere else.
Sister Golden Bear
@lamh47: Definitely recommend doing sunrise or sunset at the top of Haleakala. If your crew is coming from earlier time zones (I.e. Eastern or Central), I’d do sunrise on the morning after you arrive to use jet lag to your advantage. May be worth doing it as a tour, since parking can be limited with the crowds. Sunset is less crowded, and while you’ll need to drive down in the dark, but it’s not a difficult drive.
It can get windy in the afternoons, so best to do beach stuff in the mornings.
A luau show might be fun — if pricey— if you’ve never done them before.
The road to Hana isn’t as fearsome as its reputation. Very narrow and windy, but you also don’t go very fast. The biggest hassle are the tourons not paying attention. Do start as early as you can.
bbleh
@lamh47: Road to Hana seriously overrated imo, but ymmv. Concur no “disaster tourism” but also def support the economy. Keawakapu beach in Wailea strongly recommended. Consider also day-trip to Lana’i — Trilogy pampers you shamelessly. Alternatively or in addition, snorkeling trip to Molokini. And if you want multiple microclimates and spectacular scenery, drive up to Haleakalaa and maybe hike around a bit. Stay in Kihei — MUCH better than Ka’anapali. Check out the poke at the Foodland — amazing.
dm
Man, those crowds at Harris/Walz rallies are really getting to the Republican candidate for the Presidency.
Soprano2
@lamh47: I get it. I grew up in the Ozarks so to me that drive was no big deal; lots of going around curves but not much up and down hills. The Arkansas highway to Eureka Springs is scarier.
ETA there are beautiful waterfalls on the road to Hana, but you have to stop to see them because they’re off the road. We stopped on the way back and they weren’t crowded at all, it was well worth the stop
Also think about going to Iao Valley, that was beautiful. Trouble is, it’s ALL beautiful!

Speaking of AI, Trump dropped another You Tub commercial, this time apparently shot at Mal-Largo where he again, looked like he had been punched in the stomach and he squinting with his right eye. @lamh47: Our Maui trips were pre-fire and am sad Lahina is no longer there to visit and enjoy. Banyan tree is recovering, so that’s nice.
I’d still go back and like renting a condo with full kitchen, which takes the pressure off finding places to eat 3X/day. We trim that to one or two. On arrival collect rental car, stock up at Costco, find condo.
Exhale, walk out into the oddly warm ocean, rinse and repeat.
Whale watching and hiking the Haleakala crater probably my most toursity things and both, lots of fun.
Nothing like that for us on this year’s calendar so officially jealous.

@lamh47: I stayed at the Maui Coast Hotel last fall. Loved it.

I loved the part of the Biden interview where Biden asks Lester Holt why they concentrated on his debate performance and not the 28 confirmed lies Trump told. Holt looks uncomfortable and tries to change the subject. Biden says you can’t answer the question, can you? Holt tries to say they reported on it later. Biden laughs and says “God Love ya”.

@lamh47: We have been to Maui a couple of times, and I have two suggestions: (1) if you like snorkeling, the Molokini Crater is a popular destination for snorkeling aficionados; and (2) if you enjoy biking you can take a van ride up Haleakala and then ride a bike down. I have done the first one (and loved it). I plan to do the other one next time I get to Maui.

@Citizen Alan: I love that about him.
What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Mousebumples: I’ve only been to Maui once. Stayed at the Hale Napili which is not a big resort with tons of amenities but has the virtue of being right on Napili Bay. You can walk right out your patio door onto the beach. We got what was essentially a studio apartment with a functional kitchen, so we could eat breakfast there and pack a lunch then splurge on dinner.
We didn’t do the road to Hanna. Did go up Mount Haleakala and went to Io State Park. Went snorkeling one day and took a ferry to Lana’i which was cool because less touristy than most of the Hawaiian islands. Definitely plan some relaxing on the beach time. That’s why we didn’t do the road to Hanna. It was just too tempting to enjoy the nice views where we were.
What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Gretchen: God love ya… Biden’s PC way of telling someone they’re a sonofabitch. Honestly he should ask every single journalist who asks him a question that exact question and point it out very directly when they don’t have a good answer. Give them a taste of their own medicine. At least Holt seems to have a smidge of a sense of shame.

I haven’t been to Maui in years but do recall Mount Haleakala being great, but it does cloud over (from memory in the afternoon but that may be wrong) so timing is important. It’s a beautiful island so have a great time.

Maui musts:
1) Drive to Hana (set aside most of a full day; driving further along to visit Seven Pools optional; bring along water.juice for hydration)
2) Visit the crater on Hal;eakala (if schedule and weather permit, for sunrise; reservations required now). Bring along clothing you’d don for very cool/cold weather.
.
Lesser attractions:
1) Iao Valley
2) Winery at Ulupalakua
3) Sugar museum
4) Attend a luau
5) If it’s your thing, windsurfing
6) Sunday champagne brunch at a big hotel can be a hoot.
.
Early November just a tad early for whale watching. As For Mama’s Fish House, a big fat “Meh” from this side of the keyboard. I would describe it as an industrial “move ’em in, move ’em out” experience strictly geared to tourists.
.
Tips:
1) If weather is inclement in an area where you are, usually a drive of maybe 15 minutes to a half hour will be less or not so.
2) Although from a map it may appear you can drive around the north part of the wast side back to central Maui, and also all the way around the southern shore from Hana — DON’T.— stick to the main roads.
3) If you or any of your party have a Costco membership, they’re just outside the airport; stock up on the way to your digs.

I second the recs for Maui. I spent a couple weeks there last December, after the fires. Go up to the top of Mt. Haleakala for your birthday, that’s what I did. Kihei is a perfectly fine place to stay and after a couple days of figuring your way around, you won’t need gps. Wonderful people, the only thing is just be cool and don’t say, “Where were you during the fire?” They have whale watching but it isn’t out of Lahaina any more-we saw some on a sunset cruise and we weren’t even trying to. Trilogy is a good company to book with, locally owned.

@lamh47: Everyone thinks the sunrise at Haleakala is a must-see. It usually involves waking up at 4 a.m. It’s *cold* up there. I did it the first time I went in the 90’s. When I went about 10 years ago with my daughter, who was then still in elementary school, I decided not to try that harrowing drive up. Instead we went and caught the sunset, which was almost as spectacular.
Booking a tour for this, if you can afford it, is perhaps warranted because the drive can be a bit spooky. Near the top, Haleakala is nearly always shrouded in fog, and driving on a twisty road when you can’t see ahead of you is a bit nerve-wracking. Also, when you go through the fog, don’t be discouraged. Usually, there is no fog at the summit.

While laughing, let’s note that anyone reduced to bitter, blithering incoherence because of crowd size has automatically exposed themselves as unqualified for any office of public trust.

@Queen of Lurkers: To me the drive up Haleakala was much scarier than the drive to Hana! We saw bicyclists going up the mountain. Holy cow!

Last year we went to Hawaii and stayed on Oahu, the Big Island, and Maui for a few days each.
We were at a resort in Ka’anapali. Didn’t see Hanakaela because it would have been a 4-hour round trip and not worth a half day of our time on Maui just to get there. And sunrise? I’m not an early riser.
We booked a Road to Hana Tour which IMHO is the way to go just because you don’t have to watch the road. My family were the only passengers and the driver stopped anywhere we wanted. Lots of good commentary too.
We also went to a luau. Yes, they’re a little touristy but hey, we’re tourists. We all enjoyed it, even my grown sons.
Other than that, we hung out, played a round of golf (older son is hooked, it was the first game ever for the younger one), and had dinner various places, including food trucks. Definitely find those!

@lamh47: a couple of small things…. if you want to go to the beach that has the black sand, make a reservation (it’s on the Road to Hana) because parking is limited.
If you want something “less-touristy” the better half and I did a farm to table experience at Maui Bees. It’s in the foothills of one of the volcanoes and is a renewable farming experience that is BYOB.

JD also said that Walz isn’t “comfortable in his own skin”.
Every accusation is a confession.

One of the two food truck courts across the street from Costco plays music over loudspeakers. Too loudly, IMHO.
Yesterday when stopped into Costco could cl;early hear both music from Swan Lake and from the Ring Cycle from way over in the middle of the Costco parking lot. Last month while there it was songs with a Italian flavor. May be on a loop, may be similar selections cycled in and out periodically, dunno which.

@Chris Johnson:
A few minutes ago, everyone was talking about Hawaii. Are we now talking about Basingstoke-in-Westphalia?

@ETtheLibrarian:
So you’re saying JV Pance is actually “Buffalo Bill” — or maybe the model that Thomas Harris used — from Silence of the Lambs? Would explain a lot, I guess.

Trump supporters might be slightly more likely to turn out for a big rally if there weren’t the risk that they’d bleed out on the floor while the crowd chanted “USA! USA!” and then everyone but Trump’s opponent would forget about them the next day.
