Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Consistently wrong since 2002

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

This blog will pay for itself.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

FacebookTweetEmail

It was a brand new day today, and another tape of JD Vance once again being unable to keep his piehole shut, this time insulting a large swath of the electorate:

JD Vance in 2021, while discussing earlier waves of immigration to the US:

"You had this massive wave of Italian, Irish and German immigration and that had its problems, its consequences. You had higher crime rates, you had these ethnic enclaves, you had inter-ethnic conflict in… pic.twitter.com/SQNPwaPBLx

— Jacqueline Sweet (@JSweetLI) August 15, 2024

For those of you who do not know this already, Scots-Irish, Italian, and German immigrants formed the basis for about 80% of the population in WV and Kentucky. If he had thrown in Slavs and Poles he would have just about covered 95% of the population of West Virginia. JD Vance nee James Donald Bowman is himself… Scots-Irish. The self-loathing in this man is something to behold, and I dare say JD hates himself as much as Trump loves himself. A weird pairing.

We’re already on the topic of JD Vance, so I will restate my unvarnished thoughts I shared on twitter earlier. Longtime readers are now thinking to themselves- “Wait, these are his polished thoughts I’ve been reading all these years? That’s fucking terrifying.” And you would be right. There is not a day that passes without me being thankful that mindreaders don’t actually exist.

At any rate, like I said earlier, because my brain and internal monologue fucking hate me, all I could think about for four hours while mowing this morning was JD fucking Vance and all these fucking nutters who won’t shut up about women having babies. I mean sweet jeebus on the cross enough with this shit:

Everyone: Stop being so fucking weird and creepy.

JD Vance: pic.twitter.com/G2m96NtlLi

— Cake or Death (@Johngcole) August 14, 2024

These guys are going on and on and on about increasing the birth rate and they are so out of fucking tough I often wonder if they have ever talked to a woman let alone seen or touched a vagina. They sound like a weird mishmash of incels and redpilled freaks and christian nutjobs. Scratch that- they sound like that because that is what they are.

Regardless, they keep saying they want more babies and then keep doing everything humanly possible for there to be fewer women willing to have babies. There are lots of things you could do to increase birth rates- the first of which is men becoming less awful, and in particular, white men. 60% of us voted for Trump in the last election, and you wonder why women don’t want to have as many babies?

As you all know, having a kid is a huge and risky sacrifice. For men, the only contribution is thirty seconds of doing one of our absolutely favorite things in the world. For women, it’s a lifetime commitment and one that can kill you and for most of human existence was one of the leading causes of death for women. JD Vance and his guys have spent the better part of fifty years culminating in the Dobbs decision to make it more fucking dangerous for women. So start there.

Be less awful and maybe more women will feel more comfortable.
Give women reproductive freedom.
Give women prenatal care.
Make giving birth free.
Give women maternity leave.
Guarantee healthcare for children until age 18.
Close the paygap between men and women.
Make housing affordable again and/or subsidize it for families with kids.
Stop shaming single women with children.
Make it easier for women to continue on a career path after taking off time to have kids.
And on and on and on.

But they don’t and won’t and do the exact fucking opposite. So please, for the sake of the rest of us, just shut the fuck up until the adults are in charge.

***

In other news, polling data seems to be moving in a positive direction for Harris, so I think we will just stop here on an up note. Plus, I am tired, anyway.

that “presser” sure was something today, wasn’t it?

you can kind of tell from the “reporting” that the “reporters” are getting tired of getting played…well, not for getting played by itself, it’s more like they’re feeling the heat from us about how stupid and biased and also stupid they are for falling for trumpov’s “press conferences”

(and we’re the only ones paying for subscriptions – it sure ain’t MAGA!)

We should probably get a pool going as to when the first “reporter” asks trumpov a “real” “question” at one of these “pressers”.  It doesn’t even have to be about the $10M bribe from Egypt (although that would be great).  Maybe something about him potentially fleeing to Venezuela?  See what shakes loose, snooze media!

Complaining about Italian and Irish immigrants? How very 1840s of him. In any event, I hear that there’s this writer guy in England who had a modest proposal for dealing with excess Irish population; perhaps Senator Vance will take inspiration from him next?

Make housing affordable again and/or subsidize it for families with kids.

“Subsidize”?  The roar of conservative objections will be immediate.  “That is Socialism! Only a free market solution is acceptable!”

Well, both parents now need to work to afford housing, and the free market result was let kids.  Conservatives don’t like THAT free market result so they want the government to impose a right wing solution.

Here is a theory that makes as much sense as the rest of the theories I have heard:  “J.D. Vance” is actually Hillary Clinton in a clever disguise.  After the 2016 election, she vowed to fuck Trump over.  On early 2021 she eliminated the real Vance and took his place.  She (as Vance) started to plant the seeds of getting “Vance” on the 2024 ticket.  Along the way, she (as Vance) started saying stupid shit on film/tape and stashed the snippets so that they could be “found” in the middle of the 2024 campaign.   Once “Vance” was nominated, she continued to hold stupid rallies and saying stupid shit.

This theory makes sense because “Vance” is doing exactly what a Democrat plant would do to bring down the GOP ticket.  The proof:  have you ever seen Vance and Hillary Clinton in the same room together?  I rest my case.

@Steve LaBonne: There wasn’t, but the screed from conservatives for the past 40 years has been, “They need to come here the right way!” I need to ask them if that means coming here, displacing the native population, buying our land for trinkets and baubles, then if we don’t leave just slaughtering us? And for the remaining, shipping us off to reservations? Is that the right way?

Trump’s bonkers “press conference” has been discussed in threads downstairs but the headline at NOTUS is just perfect:

Donald Trump, Surrounded by Groceries, Says He’s ‘Entitled to Personal Attacks’ on Kamala Harris

BEDMINSTER — After days of anxiety from Republicans about the former president’s ability to stay on point, the setting for Donald Trump’s press conference Thursday seemed on message enough. He walked out to meet reporters next to tables stacked with groceries, intended to send a signal about inflation. He then spent about 40 minutes zooming from one topic to another before even taking questions, eventually landing on why he’s right to personally attack Vice President Kamala Harris.

Speaking at the exclusive Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and surrounded by coffee and Cheerios, Trump called Harris a “radical left San Francisco person who destroyed the place,” and has a “very strong Communist lean.”

“I think I’m entitled to personal attacks. I don’t have a lot of respect for her, I don’t have a lot of respect for her intelligence,” he said.

He said he’s entitled because she would “weaponize the justice system against me.”

The press conference came as the Trump campaign added several new high-level staffers, including 2016 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. Trump said Lewandowski would act as a “personal envoy” and that the additions were “a sign we want to close it out.”

    . . .

In a statement after the press conference, the Harris campaign said, “We aren’t sure what we just watched and neither is America..”

I think you’re mistaken about Trump loving himself. I think he hates himself. He only tells everybody how utterly wonderful and amazing he is because he’s locked in a desperate lifelong struggle to convince himself how fucking awesome he is. @Steve LaBonne: Yes!  Indeed!  And something else: -governing- always involves tradeoffs, and that always means that there are people who get the short end of the stick.  Even if everybody’s piece of the pie increases in size, some people’s piece doesn’t grow as fast.  And that’s going to cause resentment and opposition.  Delaying the point at which you get specific, can be helpful to your campaign.  And something else: We know that with the reappearance of The Big Lie, the bad guys are able to turn nothing into massive bad feeling about your campaign.  There’s no point in giving the bad guys any ammo, none at all.

I really do wonder if the “all vibes campaign” is the only viable response to The Big Lie.  B/c nothing else has worked.  When the other side makes every policy discussion into a lie-fest, what else can you do, other than retreat to beauty contests, popularity contests?

Quick tip: Say “vulva” instead of “vagina”. It’s almost as good as knowing the difference between a magazine, and a clip, only, this involves something important, like the human body, and reproductive health. @Steve LaBonne: Yyep.  And I still haven’t seen any daylight between her and Biden’s governing record, either.  So for any reporter who wanted to actually do even the tiniest bit of digging, they could ferret out her ostensibly policy positions, and simply write about those.  But they don’t, b/c (agreeing with you) they don’t care about policy: what they care about is being able to write up fistfights, gossip, drama.

E.g. Ms. Sanders mentions fracking. I’m pretty sure I saw Harris come out and say she wouldn’t ban fracking (again, in line with Biden).  I mean, Harris came right out and said it!

Trump loves himself. At a minimum he is a malignant narcissist. Likely he is a psychopath. People like him enjoy causing pain. The more they cause, they more satisfied they are.

I do wish people would stop trying to argue that he is a broken person, that he is trying to find his daddy’s love, or whatever. That stuff is good for movies, I guess, but Trump never will have a “rosebud” moment because psychopaths never do.

It’s true that the Irish and Italians tried to stay separate and didn’t get along all that well at first. And then their kids started marrying each other. There are as many Irish/Italians as people who are just one or the other. My Irish cousin married an Italian. My Irish self married an Italian. My parents really wanted me to marry a nice Irish boy who didn’t drink (sure, Mom). My dad, who prided himself on being able to pronounce all the Detroit Slavic names that didn’t have enough vowels, was still mis-pronouncing my husband’s name after we were married as his own little rebellion. I told him that he sounded stupid not being able to say his own daughter’s name (the one and only time I was disrespectful) and he suddenly got it right.

Cousin’s Irish/Italian son married a Jewish/Italian girl. My Irish/Italian/Czech daughter married an Indian guy. He was scared to tell his parents he was dating a white girl, but when they found that she was Catholic (as they are), they were ok with it. Cousin and I both now have happily married offspring and lovely grandchildren.

That’s really what these bozos are afraid of: that it will really be fine, and they won’t be able to divide us and make us scared of each other. I just can’t figure out how Mrs. Vance and her family fit into Mr. Vance’s doom-scrolling vision of how this is all terrible.

My (Irish/Italian) daughter lived for awhile in Medford, MA, outside of Boston, in a 3-family flat typical of the area. I was amused to learn that the city didn’t want people putting an apartment in the basement, so they decreed that you could put either a kitchen or a bathroom in the basement, but not both. The Italians put in a summer kitchen so they could can their pasta sauce. The Irish put in a bathroom so they could have a party room.

Donald Trump was right to say a presidential candidate’s running mate has “no impact” on an election’s outcome, Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance said in a clip released by CBS’s “Face the Nation” ahead of an interview airing Sunday. “I think President Trump’s right about that, actually. There were lace-curtain Irish, shanty Irish, and, worst of all, Achill Irish. I didn’t know what that meant until I was an adult, but my mother criticized Aunt Rose as a hillbilly sort, an “ackill’ Irish. Her family was from a nearly-unpopulated island off the coast of the west Ireland where my starving, ragged ancestors came from. But at least they weren’t hillbillies from Achill. And they were pretty smug about their bona-fides, and sure didn’t want their daughters marrying Italians.

I think many GOP and libertarian guys have been troubled since women became able to press charges against white rapists of their income and class level.  And plagued by workplace harassment laws that can get you fired just for ‘fooling around,’ ‘having a little fun’ or relieving stress.

Enraged that ‘taking advantage’ has been turned into a nightmare.  Now that any woman can unfairly claim molestation or rape even if you were drunk, or if she was drinking or flirting, in college, caught out alone, or tricked by superior male intelligence.

Hundreds of years of tradition, passed down from one guy to another, have been made illegal.  Guys like Trump, Kavanaugh, probably Vance, their supporters and admirers feel called to destroy the liberal society that allows women to hold this power over them.   (And that’s just the women part.)

    @Chris:

It was a combination of the seigneurial system and a recession in British North America. Family farms by laws of inheritance had to be divided up amongst the male heirs. Most farms fronted a river, (the trade route and source of irrigation) and with in a few generations, became narrow ribbon strips impractical for supporting a family. The recession severely impacted the “bush” industries.

The borders were just a suggestion, so from the Great Lakes to Maine, Quebecqois and Acadians sold up and moved to the US.

May have noted this before, but JD Vance is the gift that keeps on giving.

Purely anecdotal, but I’ve been observing American politics a long long time. I cannot think of a politician of any description who has insulted so many different groups in this short a period of time. SFB tends to pick out particular groups and keep on picking on them, but JD Vance appears to have objections to everybody. Everybody in this here US of A comes from one of four backgrounds – indigenous, slave, refugee or immigrant. That’s it. Where the fuck does he think HE came from?

Said this before, but the number of national security and foreign policy types who’ve turned up in bed with foreign governments and organizations that are unreliably friendly at best and outright hostile at worst should goddamn terrify us.  A former DIA director (Michael Flynn) becoming a consultant for the Turks and Russians, and a former private security giant (Erik Prince) for the Saudis and Chinese.  A former FBI director (Bill Sessions) ending up legal counsel to the biggest mob boss in Russia.  An active FBI director (James Comey) interfering in the 2016 election to help a Russian asset make it to the White House.  A major tech contractor (Elon Musk) sharing information from his defense satellites with the Russians at the same time we’re trying to stop them in Ukraine.  Now apparently this prick.  It’s enough to make you seriously wonder about the origins of Henry Kissinger’s “don’t be so mean to Russia!” admonitions at the end of his life.

@Gretchen: My entire life, people have been unable to pronounce my name.  They get it wrong, and even after being gently corrected, continue to get it wrong.  So eventually I Anglicized it.  Easier than having to put up with mispronunciation.  The root?  Racism.  And why don’t people confront it?  B/c there are (or were) more of them than us.  It’s that simple.

But that’s changing now.  And I think that VP Harris’ name is a harbinger of that change.  Hopefully the day will come when it’s acceptable to mispronounce a person’s name a few times, but after being corrected 2-3 times, then continued mispronunciation will be viewed as the same as farting in an elevator, or at a meal: a sign of poor breeding, of impoliteness.  Something not done in civilized company.  At a minimum.

John cole, thank you for this, it deeply nourishes me to read your list

While gathering ingredients to fill our cauldron, we quickly found that the eye of newt was not to be taken literally but in fact a common name for mustard seed. @counterfactual: Ironically enough I’m sure JD would claim that is his point.  That immigration always brings with it disruption!

Overlooking the fact that he is the sort of person that makes it true to the degree that it is true.  Certainly there are challenges that come with a diverse multicultural society as well as advantages but those that love to harp on that ignore or try to hide two salient factors:

    1) That 90% of those challenges come from assholes like our boy JD  that make it a problem.

    2) We currently have a diverse multicultural society and there is no method to change that which wouldn’t involve devastation and atrocities and that those wouldn’t only go one way. Even if we wanted to change it and I for one am not interested.

Which should lead to the conclusion that we should all work to embrace and maximize the advantages and minimize the challenges and should be grateful that minimizing the challenges mostly involves just not being assholes.
