And totally open thread.
I’ve worked 11.5 hours today and I’m going to bed.
update: I just noticed the fundraising thermometer has risen a bit. If anyone has donated today for the match, please send me email so I can make sure you’re matched.
I’ll have another fundraising post up in the morning, so you can ‘fess up there, if you prefer. I’d like to get this one finished off before the convention starts on Monday!
Trivia Man
Tomorrow i try “high traffic canvassing “ at an event in the park. No interest in door to door, curious how i will do.
CaseyL
So far we’ve got Thursday the 22nd and…maybe drinks with gwangung at 7:00 in the International District.
Transport and parking being what they are, I remember suggesting we grab a meal somewhere near the Lightrail (Roosevelt area?) and taking that down to the ID. Or going to the ID for drinks, then dinner, then lightrail back to wherever our cars are.
I’m not sure what the ID is like after dark – I know Pioneer Square is unsafe, though.
opiejeanne
@Trivia Man: I am volunteering with the Democratic HQ on the Eastside, across the lake from Seattle, starting on Wednesday. Suzan DelBene’s office in Bellevue. They aren’t very busy yet because we just had our primary 10 days ago, so things are still being sorted out. I’m not doing door knocking because I’m 74 and not quite as spry as I used to be, and I’m not phone banking ever again because I’ve suddenly become very shy about it; learned that I hate it when Hillary ran even though everyone I called was already voting for her and there was no hostility, if they even answered their phones.
I’m going to be doing office stuff: data entry when they need it, organizing the packs of stuff for the door-knockers to take with them, maybe bringing in food sometimes when things start getting busy. It’s only one day a week, which is about what I can manage, but if they open an office closer to me, like in Remond, I’ll probably try to move there. I mean, I’m in the WA 45th legistlative district and they’re either 41st or 48th because they had posters for both candidates.
opiejeanne
@CaseyL: Parking at the new station at the now-defunct mall?
My youngest and her husband moved away from that neighborhood, said it was getting really rough. They bought a little house in SeaTac and are deliriously happy to not be renting.
Geoduck
Since it’s roughly on-topic… I know there at least a couple of other people here who live in the Olympia, WA area. Anyone want to get together, maybe at the Olympia Farmer’s Market? I’m a semi-lurker and real-life hermit who needs to get out and meet people.
opiejeanne
@Geoduck: I think we might be up for a road trip to Olympia.
We live in Woodinville, so it’s a little bit of a drive, but that sounds like fun.
CaseyL
@opiejeanne: The one in Lynnwood? I don’t think that’s opening until the 30th.
Yutsano offered me a ride, since my car is hors de combat, and I thought we’d park at the Northgate station. I don’t know how convenient that would be for anyone else. But my sense is we all wanted to avoid driving and parking in any part of downtown.
@Geoduck: I haven’t been to Olympia since forever, and would love to! Did you have a date in mind?
Trivia Man
@opiejeanne: We all do what we can, thank you for the support. I know the door knockers appreciate snacks and a friendly face to talk to when they get back. I was picturing standing at a table and talking to those who approach, but it may be ME approaching them in a crowd. We’ll see.
Dan B
@Geoduck: I have a former employee who lives in Olympia. She’s great. I don’t know her name since she got married. She has been to one meet-up in Seattle but its a long drive for her.
Dan B
@CaseyL: I believe the plan is to watch Harris accept the nomination. We’ve got a big TV but I’m not sure my partner would be willing to host. We’re close to Columbia City Station so could pick people up. We could get takeout from Dim Sum or Thai, or other spots. The ID sounds like fun but finding TV with the convention is probably tricky.
CaseyL
@Dan B:
Right! I forgot we wanted to watch that.
Sister Golden Bear’s hotel room might have a TV. And, maybe, parking available for guests-of-guests? And there are plenty of places to eat in Belltown. She won’t get to see much of Seattle that night, but OTOH she and we won’t be tearing around frantically.
(And your partner won’t be stuck with a houseful of people.)
Sister Golden Bear
Thanks Watergirl!
Geoduck
@CaseyL: I wanted to see if anyone was interested before I start worrying about dates. It’d probably be a Sunday if it happens. The Olympia Farmer’s Market is downtown by the water, and has five or six restaurant stalls, so hopefully anyone who came could find something to eat. There’s live music some of the time, and of course other stalls to check out.
Sister Golden Bear
@Dan B: @CaseyL: If Dan’s partner doesn’t feel OK with hosting, my hotel room definitely has a TV, but it might be a bit crowded. There’s a bar in the lobby, but I’m not sure there’s a TV — although I’ll have my laptop, so we could stream the convention.
My hotel is near Fifth and Blanchard, and it does look like there’s a light rain station at Westlake and 7th.
Dan B
@CaseyL: Good thinking. I haven’t been in Belltown for ages. I assume that’s where SGB’s hotel is.
Dan B
@Sister Golden Bear: Our house works but isn’t good for more than 8.
Sister Golden Bear
@Dan B: People who said they were interested were CaseyL, Yutsano and BeautifulPlumage. Not if I missed anyone, but I think we’d fit, if you be willing host.
Yutsano
@CaseyL: That was my thinking, although I’ll be coming from Bellevue. I’ll just have to go over the 520 twice. But there’s good reasons why I got a Good to Go pass. Taking the train from Northgate should work, although I will have to leave early so I can get back before too late.
CaseyL
@Yutsano:
Going over 520 during evening rush hour: ugh, I’m sorry. At least going the other way after the convention should be better.
FYI, lightrail runs into the wee hours.
@Dan B:</
I really don't want to stress out your partner. But we'd be a fairly easy group to "host," since we'd basically be watching the convention and commenting on that. Not sure how much any of us would be drinking, since many of us need to drive home afterwards.
Dan B
@CaseyL: I’ll check soon. Four or five would be easy.
Dan B
My partner says okay. Who has a eta? Now we have an excuse for housecleaning!
We (Mike) likes chauffeuring people from the Columbia City Light rail station. There’s plenty of parking at our house. And it’s easy to find from I-5.
Sister Golden Bear
@Dan B: Thanks so much!
The DNC hasn’t released their speaker schedule yet, but the evening event runs from 4-8 p.m. Pacific. So I’m guessing if we met around 6, we’d catch all the main speakers.
I know you’ve got a lot of good restaurants nearby, so maybe we could order take out?
Dan B
@Sister Golden Bear: There’s a great Dim Sum restaurant, a good Thai, plus many more. The top pizza in Seattle is 8 blocks away as us a great sandwich (designer + comfort) food. And there’s funky and gourmet Filipino spots. Then there’s pricey Sicilian and flashy Carribean.
6PM sounds good.
opiejeanne
@CaseyL: Northgate Mall. Over by the Indian restaurant (Saffron?) where we met a while back.
opiejeanne
@Sister Golden Bear: Didn’t I mention that I’m interested? And mr opiejeanne always comes along. I hope that doesn’t scare Dan B’s partner.
Sister Golden Bear
@opiejeanne: No worries, I’m sure I missed it.
This is why I asked for a dedicated post, because trying to keep track of people/things over multiple posts was too hard.

@Sister Golden Bear
As for watching, probably the best bets (some emphasis and an additional link added added).
1) C-SPAN: The network will feature continuous coverage — titled Campaign 2024 — beginning with a preview at 5:30/4:30c on Monday and 6/5c on Tuesday through Thursday.
2) MSNBC: The network will begin its coverage of the contention on […] August 19 at 6/5 with Ari Melber kicking off a special cohosted by Joy Reid, who’ll be on location in Chicago, and followed by coverage anchored by Rachel Maddow and Jen Psaki. Throughout the week, Morning Joe‘s hosts will provide coverage in the morning, with the afternoon shows hosted by Andrea Mitchell and Chris Jansing following suit during their regular hours. On Wednesday, August 21, the network will air MSNBC Live: Access for All as live coverage of the convention. MSNBC’s YouTube page will stream the DNC all four days, and the network’s website and app will feature additional coverage.
3) The DNC will feature a live-stream video on its YouTube channel. Link.
4) PBS: The network will air three hours of nightly coverage — titled PBS News Special: Democratic National Convention — starting at 8/7c, with Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett anchoring.
5) Noticias Telemundo: The network will feature daily convention coverage from Monday through Friday, with special editions of the newscast anchored by Juli Vaquiero. Damià Bonmatí will anchor coverage on the streaming channel Noticias Telemundo Ahora (which is available on Peacock and the network’s digital platforms).

@opiejeanne: MIke is resigned and plotting to extract favors from me. We have two large TV’s – 55″. One upstairs (main floor), one downstairs (rec room). There’s room for 8-10 in each but not everybody together. Downstairs is on street grade so may be best for Yutsano. And there’s another TV only 32″ in the tool shed / clubhouse in the back garden.
Dan B
Weather forecast is calling for high winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms starting Saturday afternoon and lasting, although diminishing – phew, through the week.
opiejeanne
@NotMax: They didn’t list Lawrence or Nicole Wallace, and several others I’d rather see than Ari Melber and Andrea Mitchell. I mean, where is Symone, where is Michael Steele? Yeah, I know two of them are ex-Republicans but I don’t see either going back, although Nicole does sound nostalgic sometimes for the W presidency.
Hopefully Katie Tur will take the week off.

thalarctosMaritimus
I’m a maybe–I live in Kitsap County now (near Kingston, if you know the area), and although I normally work remotely, I have a work thing in Olympia that day, so it could work out, via I5 and late-night ferry.
I can confirm as details are firmed up.
Dan B
@thalarctosMaritimus: Let me know. We’ve got a sofa and an extra bedroom or two, the large rec room is #2, but I don’t remember where we’d get a mattress. Mike will know.

@NotMax: 👍
CaseyL
Many, many thanks to DanB and Mike for hosting!
But…Time Zone Alert! – the times NotMax gave for the DNC are given in Central time. That’s TWO HOURS ahead of us. So – for example – this:
..will actually be 5:00 PST. Assuming Harris accepting the nomination is one of the last items on the schedule, at 10:00 PM EST, it will be 7:00 PST.
If we all meet at 6:00 at Dan and Mike’s at 6:00, we’ll turn on the TV just in time to see Harris accept the nomination. If we want to see any more of it than that, we need to start earlier.
thalarctosMaritimus
@Dan B: OMG, what a kind offer! Thank you!
That definitely makes it more doable if I don’t have to do a midnight ferry. Thank you! I’m in.
Sister Golden Bear
@CaseyL: Thanks for the correction.
@Dan B: Would you be OK starting at 5 pm so folks can see more?
CaseyL
I mean, if all we want to see is Harris accept the nomination, that’s fine: my enjoyment of watching the proceedings will be in watching them with BJers, so I don’t have an opinion one way or the other.
But if we do want to see more of it – maybe Walz formally accepting the VP nomination? I’m not sure when that happens – we may need to tune in earlier.
Dan B
@Sister Golden Bear: 5PM works for me.
CaseyL
5:00 works for me! But I’ll need the address of where we’re going. Should I email WaterGirl for that?
…or will we all get picked up at the Columbia Street station?
Dan B
Casa Dan B is:

CaseyL
@Dan B: Perfect! Thanks!
Dan B
@CaseyL: Do we want to go for 4:30 so we have a couple minutes to get settled, order food*, and tune the TV(s) to Walz?
*I’ll probably make an executive decision and order Dim Sum and Thai so Mike knows when and what to pick up. I’ll list a fine nearby restaurant for pizza if anyone wants to add that. I can’t digest cows milk or products so rarely get to eat pizza.
CaseyL
@Dan B:
I can do 4:30, more or less (depends on train schedule: I might not get there on the dot) but I’m not sure about Yutsano. I have an email out to him, but it’s a very old email address. (I’ll see if WG has a more recent one.)
CaseyL
Was able to text Yutsano, so we’ll see if he can do 4:30.
… does anyone know how to reach gwangung? We won’t be able to drop by the ID while he’s available before the show, and we should let him know.
thalarctosMaritimus
@CaseyL: Isn’t Yutsano on the Eastside at the moment? I think light rail is an option from Bellevue and maybe even Redmond now.
Sister Golden Bear
I could do 4:30ish. Give me just enough time to check in to my hotel and drop my bags. Worse case, I can always check-in afte the meet-ups.
Thanks again for hosting!
CaseyL
Just heard from Yutsano, who says he can be at the Northgate train station a bit after 4:00, which won’t get him to the Columbia Station until 4:40. I can come earlier, but I’m quite sure Mike doesn’t want to make multiple runs to the station to pick everyone up!
Say – one pickup at the allotted spot around 4:45? For us folk coming in by train?
CaseyL
…also Yutsano will be in a wheelchair, so it might take a little longer to get to the pickup spot.
Dim sum is terrific. Yutsano has put in a request for turnip cake.
Dan B
@CaseyL: Sounds good to me. 4:45 or close to then would be fine.
FYI We’ve got three cats so hopefully no one is allergic. They will likely be invisible since they were all feral rescues who grew up during Covid and are not used to people, although the big one, Wobbles, likes to be the Golden Temple Lion(ini). He stares down the big German Shepherd of our neighbors across the street. Poor dog goes nuts. Our newest, beautiful Milly, might make a brief appearance. She’s figured our she can twist hoomins to her will: Tooda Feesh and scritches!
Dan B
@CaseyL: Pickup spot is very close, like 40 feet from the platform.
Are you ready for the potential thunderstorms this evening? We’re ready for rain!!! ❤️
BeautifulPlumage
Sorry I’m late to this. As I understand, the meetup is Thursday Aug 22 at 4:30 hosted by DanB & Mike. I get off work nearby at 4pm so will drive over. I can help ferry folks from the light rail stop if we need more space.
CaseyL
@Dan B:
I *love* a good thunderstorm.
I lived in South Florida for many years, and the thunderstorms there are about the only things I miss about that benighted place.
It’s a rare Seattle storm that has more than three good lightning-and-thunder strikes. Let’s see if tonight’s storm tops that!
Good to know – the directions make it sound a couple blocks away.
CaseyL
@BeautifulPlumage: That is correct; it’ll be great to see you!
Dan B
@CaseyL: I loved falling to sleep in thunderstorms in Ohio. In Arkansas they were sometimes frightening. We were driving in one at night where it did not get dark for half an hour because of the endless lightning bolts, then it slowed down to moments of dark for another hour. I believe Florida is similar but those storm systems coming out of Oklahoma were fierce.
Sister Golden Bear
gwangung, I you know have your play later that evening, but if you can swing by, that would be lovely, and just let us know.
Chris T.
Not Seattle but Bellingham, and, not really prepared to go anywhere until I get my hormone levels fixed up (too tired all the time right now — severe fatigue started hitting about the start of this month). Ozempic (semaglutide) for diabetes is claimed not to have hormone interference issues, but there are a lot of stories, and now I have some blood tests to prove … well, something, anyway, in my case….
(It does wonders for my blood sugar though! So if I can get the other levels back up, I should be OK in about three months.)
CaseyL
@Dan B:
Whoa. OK, I don’t think that’s happened in Florida. Just supernova-brightness when a lightning strike happens right overhead, and you can’t count how far away it is because the thunder happens while you’re still blinded by the lightning, and the sound engulfs the entire universe, as much felt as heard.
I used to drive in those storms. I enjoyed it. I may simply have been driven insane by living in South Florida, but what I remember is how cathartic it was to have to focus so intently on the here-and-now.
opiejeanne
This has been a very noisy storm on the eastside, with lots of hard rain. We thought the thunder was finished because it had been quiet long enough for the cat to emerge from her hiding place, and we just got a big rumble so she’s gone again. A 5 minute visit.
opiejeanne
@CaseyL: We will try to be at the light rail station at 4 to make things easier for Mike.
Dan B
WG put this in the Sidebar or the top of the “Hamburger”. We may have more electrifying weather for SGB’s “electrifying” visit, and the inauguration, also electrifying.
We can keep in touch here.
Gloria DryGarden
My jackal buddy is just driving up from Portland tonight, but he’s staying w family in Shelton. What’s this I’m reading about a possible secondary meetup near Olympia? That’s much closer to his location. I’ll see if I can persuade him to de lurk. It’s a long shot. I’m bummed that he doesn’t like the 82 mile drive up to Seattle, so close, yet so far.
Is the Olympia gathering coming together?
Gloria DryGarden
@Gloria DryGarden: never mind. I misunderstood his locations. Oops.
Almost Retired
Hey WA peeps, we will be doing an abbreviated version of the Cascade Loop after Labor Day (because hwy 20 is closed). Are we going to be sucking on smoke on Chelan and Leavenworth? Thinking about postponing this trip because of it.
CaseyL
Today (Aug 20) the King5 weather forecast just says “lingering showers” for Thursday, “evening storms” for Wednesday.
National Weather Service says “Showers likely” for Wednesday, “Chance showers” for Thursday.
Sister Golden Bear (if you happen to drop by): What day are you traveling?
opiejeanne
@CaseyL: The weather is dicey indeed. We had a tree come down last night on the road off this hill. I think the torrential downpour and high winds over the weekend must have weakened it, and then the rain and wind in the wee hours this morning finished it off. The trees in the canyons “walk” down the slopes, until they fall over.
Dan B
@Almost Retired: We’ve had rain and there’s more on the way so the fires should diminishing. Check the forest service. Also, it’s a wonderful drive between I-5 and where the North Cascades highway is closed above Ross Lake. The drive from Arlington, on I-5 to Darrington and then north to Highway 20 is wonderful, and little known, even here. And Diablo Lake is beyond gorgeous. It’s my favorite part of the Highway. I’ve had several people drive it one way and then double back because they loved it so much. Tiny Marblemount and the company town at Gorge Dam are genuine as are the berry farms on the way. You could also see if you can visit the North Cascades Institute on the north shore of Diablo Lake.
I hope you have a wonderful visit.
Dan B
@Dan B: Almost Retired- On your way back from Ross Lake, assuming the North Cascades Highway is still closed at Easy Pass, you can drive straight west down the highway to Mount Vernon and then Anacortes. From there you could walk onto the San Juan Island ferry, unless you can get car reservations, very unlikely in summer unfortunately, and do a round trip to Friday Harbor, easy walk into town – 50 feet. Or you could just drive south over the Deception Pass bridge, with great State Park. Whidbey Island is 50 miles long with great spots like Ebey’s Landing – fantastic short hike that looks straight down the Straights of Juan de Fuca to the Pacific, South Whidbey State Park which has gorgeous old growth forest on the east side of the park, Earth Sanctuary near Freeland, and Langley which is an upscale little town with great little stores, galleries and restaurants.
In other words there are fantastic options if the North Cascades Highway is closed between Washington Pass and Ross Lake. You’re only missing 40 miles that’s very nice but not breathtaking like Diablo and Ross Lakes.
Dan B
Almost Retired: If you take the alternate route to the North Cascades Highway you’ll go through Darrington. It’s far into the mountains but only 500 feet above Sea level. The mountains surrounding the town rise mire than 6,000 feet above the town with year round ice fields hanging from them. It was used as a stand in for the Colorado Rockies in the movie War Games. North of town the road parallels a small river that’s turquoise from glacial silt from glaciers on Glacier Peak, one of the five volcanoes in Washington. And, a Mike before you reach the North Cascades Highway (Hwy 20) in Rockport, there’s a bridge with a view up the Skagit River Valley to 8,900 foot, snow capped El Dorado Peak. It’s stunning.
Almost Retired
This is terrific advice. Thank you so much. We’re starting at Glacier and Waterton NP and then taking the Crowsnest Highway to Fernie and Osoyoos and then dropping down to do as much of the loop as we can. I’m OK with a little bit of shitty air quality (I live in Los Angeles after all), but there are limits. Recalibrating based on this great feedback.
Yutsano
SO I hate to be a poop, but because the convention proceedings are going so late I’m going to have to bow out of the meet-up. Which sucks. But for Sister Golden Bear: there is a possibility that I’ll be in the Bay Area (Bloomington) around the middle of April. The nice thing is my job isn’t tax season dependent (except for volume of cases but that’s a different story!) so I’m a lot more flexible. It just turns out I have the convention going on that starts Thursday.
CaseyL
@Yutsano:
They have been going a good bit later than scheduled. But I’m so sorry you won’t be able to join us! We’ll just need to do another Seattle Meetup :)
(Don’t worry about me; like I said, I can walk to the train if need be.)
CaseyL
@opiejeanne: Sounds like a good plan; so will I. I still have you in my phone Contacts and can text you if I’m running late – though I will do my best not to.
Dan B
@Yutsano: It makes sense since you’d have to get to Northgate and then Bellevue.
On a related note It may be possible for some of the other Light Rail riders to get a ride to Northgate from Sister Golden Bear.
opiejeanne
@Yutsano: I’m sorry we’ll miss you.
P.S. Bloomington is not in the Bay Area, it’s next door to Fontana in SoCal, in San Bernardino County.
opiejeanne
@CaseyL: Our disappeared-for-a-month tile guys are promised to return on Thursday to remove the bad tile, and we’ve told them they have to leave by 3pm.That gives us enough time to get to the station by 4.
Do you need a ride? Because we can pick you up.
CaseyL
@opiejeanne: Thank you! That would be lovely, if only because the weather might be…very wet.
I’ll text you my address.
hw3
@Geoduck: I’d be down for an Oly meetup. Fellow semi-lurker.
opiejeanne
Dan, I brought an almond tart to the last meet-up I attended. I’m thinking of bringing one tomorrow. I hope there are no objections.
Dan B
@opiejeanne: I object strenuously to anyone, in their right mind, who would object to your fabulous almond tart.
Was that clear?
Back to housecleaning… 😔
Sister Golden Bear
@Yutsano: We’ll miss you.
Unfortunately, Bloomington is about 400+ miles from the Bay Area, but if you’re ever closer….
@Geoduck: @hw3: FWIW, I’ll be in Port Angeles from Saturday late afternoon/evening (driving up from Seattle earlier in the day) through Monday night. Last minute I know, but maybe noonish Sunday at the farmer’s market?
@opiejeanne: Oh no, not an almond tart! 😁
Dan B
@Sister Golden Bear: You mean the easy to make but impossible to forget Almond Tart!?
Sister Golden Bear
@Sister Golden Bear: Doh! I mixed up the location of Olympia — thinking it was near Port Angeles — so obviously a potential meet-up on Sunday is out.
Dan B
A reminder for people driving to our house please park across the street. Mike will need the driveway for delivering people from the light rail.
Light Rail riders: Mike will be in the dark blue Nissan Leaf at the south end of Columbia City Station. Cross at the light. He’ll be on Edmunds on the West side of MLK. Edmunds is just an alley on that side.
Please call him from Sodo station: 206-465-9572
Sister Golden Bear
Wonderful to meet all of you!
FWIW, my reward for driving folks to the Northgate Station was a beautiful view of the downtown city lights on the drive back to the hotel.
CaseyL
SO many thanks to give!
To Dan and Mike for hosting and plying us with food, drink, and tours of their amazing house and gardens.
To Opiejeanne and Mr. Opiejeanne for the ride to the train station and their company on the traijn.
To Sister Golden Bear for the ride home and conversation along the way.
And to the Juicers! It was delightful to see everyone again! I’d love to do it again soon.
CaseyL
@Sister Golden Bear: Every so often there’s a view of the city that still, after all these years, takes my breath away.
The downtown skyline is one of those, whether by day or by night.
Glad you got to see it!
Sister Golden Bear
Spent the day of enjoying the
lovely Augustnot-so-lovely October weather (I’m very…moistdamp… at the moment), and now I’m off to see Vietgone tonight. Hopefully I’ll get to say hi to gwangung, who couldn’t make it to the meetup because he was working the play.Again, thanks to Dan and Mike for hosting.
Dan B
It was the greatest fun evening with everyone.
BTW I only have contact info for SGB.
So…A friend of ours* has two sewing machines to donate and a third that needs major repairs. We’d love to get them to Opiejeanne.
*Mike went to her house today and fir some reason found out about the sewing machines. I bet he was talking about the “Seething Mass of Screaming Jackals” at our house last night. Or maybe it was about good people doing good things.
Dan B
@CaseyL: You’re welcome. It was great.
And, speaking of Meet-up soon: Satby will be here in early October so… Meet-up planning, if she’s interested?
Almost Retired
@Dan B: not sure if you’re checking this but WaterGirl alerted me to your comment to me on John’s post. Thanks for the info! We’re basically going to do a partial loop. We’re staying in Wenatchee for three night to do the eastern part of the loop. And the we’ll do the northern part from Sedro Woolley to the closure. Don’t need to do the western part. Done it a couple times before, although Widbey Island is always worth another visit. Thanks for all the advice!
Dan B
@Almost Retired: Its good you got the info. Have you been to Artist’s Point at Mount Baker? It’s a nice drive to a spectacular location. There are good pictures of the location on the internet.
Three days in Wenatchee seems “interesting”. Winthrop is more appealing to me as is tiny Mazama. From there you can take the one lane gravel road to Hart’s Pass and Slate Peak area with views west to glacier clad peaks and east into the big shouldered mountains of the Pasayten Wilderness.
Almost Retired
@Dan B: Wenatchee has to do with prices. We’re okay with driving a bit between locations, and the hotel rates in many of the other towns were incompatible with a three to four week road trip (we’re already getting reamed at Glacier).
Dan B
@Almost Retired: I understand. I thought Winthrop and Twisp would be affordable in summer compared to cross country season.
I like Winthrop and took my parents there the first year the highway (North Cascades) opened. After my parents got situated in their motel the friend whose car we were driving and I went to the bar in town. The bartender and the two of us were the only people, all men, who’d bathed that week. It was an honest to God cow town. It’s changed.
Gloria DryGarden
@opiejeanne: is this recipe for almond tart available?
my bj lurker friend was almost within range of this meet up, so I’ve been following, and Gosh, it sounds like a yummy thing..
Dan B
@Gloria DryGarden: I’m hoping to get the Almond Tart recipe soon but BJ has the incorrect email address for me so I’m hoping for Anne Laurie to send the correct email to Opiejeanne. Wish me luck. And… that at the next meet-up I get contact info for folks.
