Okay…fool me once. But it looks like this starts at 2:30/1:30/12:30/11:30
I will be around to double-check, after I wash the Japanese beetles out of my hair. Weeding was long overdue today. Talked with my neighbors who have moved to 5 acres just north of here and are turning the entire property into a regenerative farm. Boy oh boy, did my heart go zing! They also gave me all the grass clipping from their current (for sale) house, which was also excellent. Helping to revitalize the last section of backyard before I reseed this fall.
Their house being on the market all summer is something we could probably talk about at another time – housing prices, interest rates and a sluggish market, even in CO where people usually come to blows over offers.

The real estate market is a little weird right now because the Fed promised a rate cut, and houses are so expensive that a half a point means a lot. We’re seeing that sluggishness here is “bid high Bend” too. Most people with kids who wanted to move have already done so since school starts soon, but prices are teetering on realizing it’s not a seller’s market anymore, and prices need to digest the gains and maybe come down a bit. It’s evenly balanced between but and sell right now, and it’s been a long time since that was the case.
Regenerative farm! I hope you can provide some real time stories for us about their progress!

@lamh47: I don’t get why people assume he isn’t aware of Chappell Roan. She’s blown up recently in a way I haven’t seen any artist do do in decades. She’s absolutely everywhere on social media, YouTube etc., playing for huge festival crowds and is the biggest queer icon since Lil Nas X. Given Walz’ passion for LGBTQ rights, Feminism, and the fact that he has a teenage daughter, I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t listening to Roan. I’m only 8 years younger than Walz and I’m kind of obsessed with Roan’s album and incredible live performances. I’m not usually up on every youth music trend (I’ve never checked out Charlie XCX, for just one example), but Roan’s come-up has been so huge and fast, that it even got onto my radar.

Further down the article, turns out he was wearing Hokas. Of course the article’s comment section was all “Dude! Where ya been? Why aren’t you wearing Hokas?”
And maybe it’s time for a conversation about the fact that in order to be taken seriously as a politician or business person, women are required to wear mid-20th century footwear, while geez, the men are sporting 19th century shoes! We accidentally killed all our grass with that early summer heat wave, and I don’t quite know what to do about it. All the ground is spongy clay. Sometimes, I go and dig dandelions out of it, but it is very sad.
There is a $1 million hole in the ground in town. They bought this property for $850,000 two years ago and they feel like sitting on it for two years and digging a large hole is worth $150,000. It is bananas.
There is another property that is $1,200,000, and it needs to be torn down. With a normal house costing about $500/sq ft to build, there is no way anyone could fix that $1,200,000 home.

@Jeffg166: Yes, they try much harder than the Orange Menace’s campaign.
The Harris/Walz campaign has traveling volunteers who among other things haul water to those waiting in line as I found out yesterday in Omaha. The line was 21/2 hours long before we got into the overflow and the sun was out. But they did their best to keep us comfortable despite the fact that security took time – hence the long line. There was a payoff even for those in the overlow – Walz came outside and worked the crowd for over 20 minutes after a very short fire us up talk from the floor.
So yes, I think they are doing their best on short notice (I believe they had to change venues when more people signed up to show up than expected) even though my spouse got a pretty bad sunburn.

It was the cold war. In the 50s, Ike the president was very much the cold war commander in chief fighting against the “godless commies”
During WW2, Ike was just one of many commanding generals. McArthur was probably more famous. So your grandma was probably venerating Ike the president, not Ike the general.

Yep, my mom was a card.

Also always amused that Hokas, which basically started out in the ultra running community for those 100+ mile runs, have become just regular dad shoes. Also find it very funny that the rest of the running shoe company basically just copied them. Started seeing it about 5-8 years ago, with Brooks then the rest of them just doing their own version. If you saw the shoes the Olympic marathoners were using, they were all of that style. Quite the change overall.
Suzanne
@Leto: I bought Hokas for SuzMom for Xmas, because I’ve been reading that the extra cushioning is good for the olds. What’s ironic is that I run, and I don’t wear them. I’ve been really happy with my Brooks Ghosts, because my toe box is a bit wider and my old New Balances were making my fourth and fifth toes go numb.
I should prolly replace my Ghosts soon, but meh. I saw that the new version is much more Hoka-y.

@Suzanne: exactly! So many companies are moving to a larger foam bed for comfort and stability. Idk, I just remember when the community at large was still in the minimal phase of all of this. Trying to reduce weight overall like bicyclists. They wouldn’t wear a track flat, but it also wasn’t as thick as a Hoka.
Regarding toe box, I’m glad you stuck with the Brooks recommendation. I’m the same way regarding needing toe space, and Ghosts always worked well. Brooks overall was very good in that regard. Also I saw this the other day and immediately thought of you.
Leto
@raven: I meant to reply to you that I 1) I saw that and 2) I didn’t know that! That’s so wild! @Leto: I have been increasing my weekly mileage pretty significantly in the last four weeks or so, and I’ve been pleased so far by not feeling too much muscle soreness, or that impact-y feeling. (And yoga helps a great deal with getting rid of soreness.) I honestly have been wondering if the increased cushioning would be more protective for long runs. I run mostly on concrete sidewalks, but some of the roads around here are brick and stone, and fucken STEEP AF, so I want good grip! I feel like the thicker shoes would make me more likely to trip and fall? I don’t know.

Leto
@Suzanne: you’ll only trip and fall until you get used to the sole thickness. That’s just a muscle memory thing on knowing how high to lift your foot. Once your body adjusts to that, you’ll be fine. The increased cushion will definitely provide more protection on longer runs. Less impact over distance, which will translate into less fatigue and muscle soreness. Something that the increased cushion won’t protect from is bad running form, but that’s a whole other topic.
Agreed on yoga, and a good foam roller! Those two are invaluable. Also a Theragun. I didn’t have that while I ran, but got it for my recovery post accident. If you don’t have one, I highly recommend it. God, what I wouldn’t give to be able to do yoga again.
Suzanne
@Leto: LOL that’s funny.
You know what kills me? Men just don’t like that women want the same stuff they do. Like, it’s not like we’re dying to do PowerPoint presentations. We want financial independence and the array of choices that enables, and recognition and esteem for our talents and contributions, and to compete and win at stuff. Why are so many men threatened by that?! (Rhetorical question; I know the answer.) It’s because autonomy and mastery are two critical psychological needs for humans. The failure to grok that stems from, quite literally, not seeing women as full humans, as active agents of their lives.
raven
@Leto: Man, I tried the Teragun and it was so painful I sent it back.
Leto
@raven: Haha, I know you were a dogface but this just reminded me of you. Can totally see you there. That’s cool about your dad!
Edit: regarding Theragun. Did you try the different rpm/speed settings? Different head attachments? Also it’s honestly meant for short duration work. Like 2 mins, tops! You do it in short little 45 sec sessions because it can really do a doozy on you. First few times I did it, I did it for a few mins (think 5?), and yeah… not good afterwards. Then read how it’s meant for shorter more intense work.

@Suzanne: totally understand smooth. The yoga instructor I had in the UK, she worked for the Mercedes AMG team for about a decade. The F1 team that was 5 mins away from us. She did work for the pit members, as well as the drivers when they wanted to. Amazing woman, who even 8 months pregnant, was more flexible than I ever could’ve dreamed of being.
I do chair yoga, because after my accident I don’t have the range of motion in my knees or hips to be able to do anything other than chair yoga. There’s issues with my hip flexors, and other places, that if I could do some basic stretches would help so much. But you know, do what’cha can with what ya got. I never did hot yoga, although I’ve seen you describe it plenty. Ofc if you count the fact that we did our yoga on the racquetball court, sans A/C in the summer… maybe close?

@Starfish:
1). Airaite, (lots of holes),
2). rake over with a 1/4 inch of compost, making sure it fills the holes.
3). when cooler, wetter weather hits, overseed with proper local grass mixes, red clover, white clover and thyme(s). Cover with a thin layer of topsoil. Water daily if needed.
By spring you should have a durable, bee friendly lawn back.
Every fall, airaite and add compost.
The compost breaks up the clay over time and creates a heathy biome in the soil. Basically, feed the dirt, the dirt will feed the grass
In the heat of summer, never cut the grass shorter than 3″.

She is also doing the chair yoga since her two hip surgeries last year. She lost a lot of muscle mass and range of motion. But being in a seated pose makes it hard to stretch those hip flexors. She hasn’t regained great balance, so we figured out some stretches she could do while holding onto the kitchen counter.
Man, all the sitting that we do in modern life is a killer on the hips. I will note that the hot yoga environment lets me get super-deep into those stretches (got my right and left leg splits back!), but I do try to do some hip stretches even at work. My one must-have in the office environment is a standing desk. I don’t care if they stick it in a closet. I can’t sit all day.

@Suzanne: I… hadn’t thought of that? I have a PT scrip because of the two major surgeries I just had a month ago, so I will def look into that; thanks! Anything at this point will be of help. There’s a yoga studio about 10 mins away that I keep telling myself, “I should check to see if they have something for me” but… I don’t. I need to get over this first hurdle (recovery) though!
Suzanne
@narya: Maybe I’ll give those a try. I have seen pictures in my feed and I have been curious. I bought these Ghosts a couple of years ago and it is definitely past time to replace. I am a cheapskate. ;) I was having a really hard time since my last pregnancy. During the last couple of months, I suddenly put on a ton of water weight. Gained ten pounds in a week, hands and feet swelled up, almost had to deliver early due to excessive amniotic fluid, lost my balance and fell. After Spawn was born, I was nursing, and I had numbness and tingling in my right hand all the way up to my shoulder. Went to an orthopedist, who said that nursing was keeping me from losing all the water weight, which was compressing the nerves in my right arm, and he recommended that I stop. So I did, and it mostly fixed it, but my hands and feet are still a little bit puffier than they were before, even though I weigh less. And I still can’t bend my right arm as far as my left, WTF. So I replaced the running shoes I had from before that pregnancy, and the Ghosts are so comfortable than I’m honestly kind of scared of getting anything different. Ergh.

@Suzanne: I think that is the root cause of my problems. I worked from home for 15 years and sat on my ass all day. Now I can’t sit and I can’t stand up for any period of time. Nothing, and I mean nothing, had helped except Gabapentin allows me to sleep.

@Leto: One of the weekend instructors at my yoga place is a PT in her real job, which was how I found her for SuzMom. SuzMom didn’t like the PTs at the hospital, LOL, so I was trying to find something different. I bet you can find someone similar.

@raven: All the human-factors people say “sitting is the new smoking”. I definitely notice when I sit too long. Supposedly we should aim to stand 15 minutes of every hour….. at least that’s what I’ve been told.

You know, I looked at that song by British artist Lily Allen. And all I got to say is, if any U.S. singer had sung that in public about either George “Dubya” Bush or Donald Trump they would have been shot. There are things you can get away with in the UK you can’t get away with here, more’s the pity. A soloist singing “FUCK YOU” with a tour that just happened to intersect with a few Trump rallies would be gold plated trolling. Also sums up my feelings perfectly to the entire rancid bag of MAGAts.

@Leto: OMG, that huge fork is literally one block from my bar!!! People sometimes ask us how to find it. Andy’s custard yum, they are in a lot of cities in the US now but started here. I think that stadium is at the fairgrounds. I don’t recognize the old Sinclair station, but I think I know where the mini golf place is. I went to high school with the woman who painted those horses, Susan Lucara Sommers. I also think I recognize the old guy with the mustache in the black sweatshirt. Holy cow….

@Leto: Be really careful. If your yoga teacher is 23 years old and leaning into a flexibility that just comes from being young and doesn’t know anything about recovering from injury, walk away quickly.
The only way that yoga people are making any money these days is by selling yoga teacher training classes so we have a lot of young people with 200 hour yoga certificates who do not know stuff.

@Suzanne: Running shoes are the one thing that I replace frequently. I cycle the old ones into being my walking shoes (because I walk a ton, too). I’m a cheapskate, but if I’m gonna make these old-ass knees and legs deal with running, I’m gonna try not to wreck them.
narya
@Starfish: I second this! I look for old folks with decades of experience, and I look for folks who do hatha or vinyasa or iyengar, and I avoid folks who specialize in ashtanga.

@TBone: I’ve been watching Sex and the City while doing my PT exercises (never saw it before!), and this morning there was a really great line. Miranda’s cleaning person had found her “goodie drawer,” and the girls were discussing what was in theirs. Charlotte was shocked, so one of them said, “What’s in yours, Robert’s Rules of Order?” 😂

@narya: Agree.
One of the teachers at my place is a woman who is in her late 60s, who is a retired schoolteacher, and she has had both hips replaced. She has been teaching yoga and fitness classes forever and is more flexible and stronger than most people half her age. I have taken some of her specialty workshops and she knows a lot. I also look for people who know a lot about adaptations.

@Leto: re yoga: I know there are a lot of talented physical therapists out there, and I know (from this blog!) that you went through a horrific accident a while ago, but have you looked into therapy modified yoga?
I went through yoga teacher training and a lot of physical therapists were in the group taking yoga teacher training because it’s another way of getting into their own speciality of moving the body. I don’t have much to add onto that, but I’m not sure your disabilities preclude you from yoga.

@Leto: Check out the Outlands festival set from last week on YouTube. She plays a new song The Subway, that’s like a Patsy Cline tune and she really gets to belt towards the end. It’s really great, as is the Lollapalooza set.

@Leto: Thanks. Love it. I’ve been in some bands that have done stuff like this (though not on spur of moment). I really want to put together another one to do it regularly. I absolutely LOVE jazz versions of rock/pop tunes. Brad Meldhau and Bad Plus are two of my faves.

@Another Scott: Just saw Beto on the teevee, and he said Allred is polling better against Cancun Cruz at this time than Beto was pulling. 🤞🏻
This race reminds me of Katie Hobbs vs Kari Lake for governor. We were (most of us) freaking out that Katie was too low key vs the airbrushed in your face Kari, coupled with Hobbs refusal to debate Lake… we all know how that race ended.
Beto seems extremely confident Allred has a real shot.
