NYC Meetup? (and Open Thread)

This was supposed to go up on Thursday night, so for maximum coverage I will post this now and then re-up it for the evening crowd.  (Sorry, NotMax)

NotMax will be in NYC for a couple of weeks and he is putting out feelers about a NYC meet-up.  Guessing that he is visiting his Mom, but he’ll still have time for Balloon Juice peps, if anyone is interested.

Will be visiting the area 8/22 – 9/8. Past experience is that people prefer the weekends. Looking at the calendar, Labor Day weekend seems a good choice.

Friday (evening) 8/30 or any time Saturday 8/31 or Sunday 9/1 or Monday 9/2.  Please do chime in with preferences.

So far as venue, open to any and all suggestions. Initially thinking of eitherPershing Square cafe (steps away from Grand Central Terminal at Park and 42nd) or a more funky spot, Washington Square Diner (easy access by subway, massive menu but no cocktails, beer or wine only).

Update: Failed to mention the possibility of Tir Na Nog (31st and 8th, across from Penn Station), where we’ve met up previously.

Open thread.

I missed the last time you were in town, so hope to make it this time. Labor Day weekend is good for me, as are any of the venues you’ve suggested.

I flying back from visiting my mother on Saturday. Depending on how travel goes and what state I left my apartment in, I might be able to make Sunday or Monday. All suggestions work for me.

    @oldster

    A dip into history.

How old New York City used to be considered a summer vacation resort.

@NotMax: “Marse” Henry  from Kentucky needs a new nickname. I nominate “Arse Henry.”

I guess before asphalt NYC might have been a cooler spot in the summer, except something tells me I’m wrong…

Wish I could be there for meetup!

Abortion is coming to the Democratic National Convention this week…and conservatives are not okay.

Access to reproductive health care—which both Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.), have strongly supported—is sure to be front and center in some of the convention’s biggest speeches. Especially given its importance for voters and the fact that former President Donald Trump is responsible for appointing three of the five Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, unleashing an avalanche of restrictions in over a dozen states.

But this week, the issue will not just be rhetorical, but literal as well. Planned Parenthood Great Rivers, which is based in neighboring Missouri, where abortion is banned, announced in a post on X earlier this week that it will be providing free medication abortions and vasectomies from a “mobile health clinic” in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago on Monday and Tuesday. That’s just under a mile northwest of the United Center, where many of the main DNC events will take place. By Saturday, Planned Parenthood announced that all the appointments had been filled—and, as you may expect, the right promptly began freaking out.

@HumboldtBlue: They could always deal with their fascist freakout about women having control over their own bodies by going and fucking themselves.

Does anyone know what this means?

“EC will also be available for free without an appointment.“

@mrmoshpotato: You are more sensible, clearly!

Although I am sorry for the people caught in the mess, I am thankful the wingnuts have been going after contraception and after vasectomies out loud.  That is a direct hit on men’s control over their own bodies & reproductive health, too!  The more people freaked out by this, the better, at least if they get out and vote!
