… KAMALA, DOUG/TIM, GWEN/BILL, HILLARY HIT CHICAGO SUNDAY: Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff arrive in Chicago on Sunday night from Pittsburgh. Harris and Emhoff will attend Monday’s kick off session, where she will get the baton from Biden and be there for the salute to the president. Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, head to Milwaukee for a Tuesday rally, returning to Chicago later in the day.
Harris and Emhoff and the Walzes will remain in Chicago through Friday.
Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton — the 2016 Democratic nominee and former secretary of state, New York senator and first lady — headline a high-dollar fundraiser for the Harris Victory Fund on Sunday night in Highland Park, with the ask ranging from $25,000 to $100,000, according to an invitation obtained by the Sun-Times.
Hillary Clinton will speak to the convention on Monday night; Emhoff on Tuesday; Walz on Wednesday; and Harris on Thursday.
After his speech, Biden and first lady Jill Biden, who also addresses the convention on Monday, will leave Chicago…
Biden plans to hit the road for the Harris-Walz ticket, his aides said, with an extensive travel schedule in the weeks ahead.

Anyone heard the thing about Chicago cops planning on standing down at the DNC convention? I read it somewhere and hopefully it’s just grumbling. I am (distantly) related to Chicago cops but … they are thin-skinned cry babies any time I ask about the job.
Also I have a cry baby former Chicago cop who moved to the south as a client. He moved because Chicago did not back the blue, according to him.

WaPo/ABC had a new national poll out last night, continuing the theme of real momentum towards Harris. Topline number is 50-45 (likely voters), 49-45 (registered voters). compared to a tied race a month ago. Big changes in D enthusiasm:
Still room to grow there. Of course, you could be overjoyed with Harris and answer that question “no” because you think that Trump is a festering pustule who has no business doing anything except moldering in a prison cell, so maybe 40% of Democrats are in that bin.
In the “I despair of humanity” section, there’s this:
That bit aside, it’s a very positive set of indications.

I’m curious where Houle thinks we get 400 electoral votes. I guess Biden + NC + FL + OH + TX + … MO? That would be great, but I don’t expect that…

The polls are a snapshot in time even if they manage to get an accurate sample of the voters who will vote in November. They are not predictors of what will happen in November
That was true when Biden was trailing Trump and is true when Harris is leading Trump.
IIRC HRC was leading Trump until the day of the elections.

@dmsilev: While history doesn’t repeat, we need to remember the 1980 election. Carter and Reagan were mostly tied until the last debate in October (with Anderson’s share falling throughout the year). Once things started to break, Reagan was able to run up the score. The GOP taking the senate that year by such a large margin was a surprise until the returns started coming in.
We’ve got a great opportunity to run up the score this year. No foreign wars, Covid is endemic rather than pandemic and vaccines are available and working, we can campaign without hour hands tied behind our backs and we have great war chests, the economy is strong, inflation is returning to normal, we’ve implemented great policies that are working, we have a great team, and we have a great vision for the future.
Keep pushing for Team Democrats!!
Cheers,
Scott.

@schrodingers_cat:
“Top line” poll means a national poll, I think. National polls are meaningless, because we don’t have a national election. (Clinton led in every national poll, and did indeed win the national popular vote.)
I pay much more attention to individual state polls. I hope, and am pretty sure, the Harris-Walz campaign does as well.

I love that Hemingway line (“Gradually, then all at once. “) and it is applicable to many things other than going bankrupt. Even if it applies here, TFG is still in the “gradually” phase. I just hope that “all at once” comes before the election, rather than in January 2025.

Poor Sammy’s designated daily prey are the squirrels who nest under the eaves. It infuriates him that they completely ignore him when he’s barking hysterically from inside the house, and most of the time when he’s outside barking at them from ground level. But occasionally there is a triumphant victory, when he unnerves them enough that they flee.
Alas, just like Shadow’s iguanas, they’re just going to be back in an hour or two.
To the author’s point, that doesn’t seem to diminish Sammy’s joy in the daily hunt.

What’s been a huge contrast, to me, between Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns is the Democrats have former presidents, presidential candidates, and other senior people within the party who are still popular and no one is embarrassed to be seen in public with.
There is nothing comparable on the Republican side, which is weird.

@rikyrah: Sundown towns are / were kind of spread out, right? I learned recently that the town where my father grew up was a sundown town (suburb of Chicago), shocking, as it wasn’t common knowledge with the family or anyone I grew up with. No outright displays of Nazis and other paraphernalia, because you can’t even show Christmas lights there. Just luminary bags. I guess we should have looked more closely at the designs on the bags…And the fact that there were no black people anywhere.
UncleEbeneezer
They say the same thing in Pasadena. I call it “Blue Fragility” and it’s incredibly common, among officers, in EVERY jurisdiction. It’s up there with “White People/Christians are the real victims” bullshit. And it’s been around forever. I remember reading multiple accounts of police saying this crap back during the Watts riots in the 60’s. Before there really were ANY laws to hold police accountable, the standard line of argument from police was that their hands were tied by all these onerous regulations. They also love to claim that everyone hates the police, when actual polls of public sentiment have always shown quite the opposite.

@Another Scott:
You are quite correct, of course: the big problem, though, in THIS national election is that Trump and the Republicans can’t really campaign on the facts, so are likely to shift their focus to “social issues” where their lack of past or present accomplishments won’t matter as much.
Though given that it is Donald Trump and the 2024 Republican Party, “focus on social issues” is going to translate to pure hate-mongering on the usual cesspool of prejudices (racism, nativism, misogyny, homophobia, trans panic, etc., all bolstered with heaping helping of “religion” – I.e., self-righteous fanaticism). With the threat of violence always lurking in the background.

SFB will be raging this week for certain, especially when Biden gives Harris a rousing endorsement instead of trying to seize back the nomination.
I want him beaten so badly that he screeches that he had to have been cheated, because it’s impossible for the margin of victory for Harris to be that big. Which he will. He could be beaten by 20 points and he would still reject the results, because he is psychologically unable to accept losing – ever, at anything. Just one of the problems inherent when a candidate is a walking collection of personality disorders.

Look at the candidate(s) on the right. Listen to what they say. Look at their policies. They have nothing but grift and shitforbrains. He is their leader. Think about that for a moment. They think he is a leader. He’s the best they can do. They have hate and what else? sfb is a leader? That is a leader? A leader of what? Pompous, arrogant hot air? I saw some officers in the Navy that he reminds me of, people would follow them only because of the uniform, not what was in it. Which was nothing. They gave NOTHING to anyone or anything. They couldn’t lead, they couldn’t think, they existed is all they did. Now in the military one had to follow, that’s part of the deal. It was like being puppies in a box. We aren’t in the military. I’d bet because there was one concept at that time. Not dying/survival. Even olds of today didn’t see the world the same at that point in time as the world used to be back decades ago. The world is a different place, humanity is different. And that big difference is communications. That electronic device that you carry in your pocket or purse is a prime example of the change. When I was a young child not every home even had a phone. Now you/most everyone carry one that can call anywhere in the world, in your pocket/purse. Structurally the world has massively changed in my 3/4 of a century. We can manufacture millions of products to accuracy levels that we couldn’t even measure when I was born. And I know this because I started learning the manufacturing of tools out of metal almost 65 yrs ago. Many humans alive today can look back and see the changes that are massive and structural to day to day life. So much has changed in the last 3/4 of a century. Look at what we are doing right this moment. If you are an old, look at what life was like 100 yrs ago. The level of change is dramatic, more change in that time than in several hundred yrs prior. Many people didn’t have a car. Or even thought they ever might. Look back 50 yrs ago, did you carry a phone that could call anywhere in the world? That you could take pictures with? The world changes and it changes faster than it ever has before that and in almost every way. Many of us on here are olds and have seen, if we were looking, massive changes, in every segment of life. What we are doing right here, right now. In some ways little change, but in most ways and things, massive change. Medicine has changed dramatically. Manufacturing – dramatically. Communications – dramatically. Etc, etc, etc…….
