Democratic National Convention reveals theme for each night of Chicago event https://t.co/WiXmsP9b86
— Joey Garrison (@joeygarrison) August 18, 2024
… The title of the four-day convention is “For the People, For Our Future,” with Democrats hoping to use the festivities to introduce Harris and running-mate Gov. Tim Walz to the nation after Harris quickly secured the nomination following President Joe Biden’s exit from the race last month.
“The story here is simple and it’s one that will resonate with Americans across the country: Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are fighting for the American people and America’s future. Donald Trump is only fighting for himself,” said Minyon Moore, the convention’s chair…
Monday, Aug. 19
The convention kicks off Monday with the theme “For the People.” Biden will be the keynote speaker on a night that will pay tribute to the outgoing president, who dropped out of the race amid pressure from fellow Democrats worried about his chances to beat Republican nominee Donald Trump.First Lady Jill Biden will address the convention as well Monday night. Harris, who is taking part in a campaign bus tour through western Pennsylvania on Sunday, is expected to arrive at the United Center on Monday to watch the Bidens’ addresses…
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 election, will also address the convention Monday. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, host of the convention, will speak Monday night as well.
Tuesday, Aug. 20
Tuesday’s theme is “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” with former President Barack Obama set to address the convention…Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker will also speak Tuesday night…
Wednesday, Aug. 21
Wednesday’s convention theme is “A Fight for our Freedoms,” with Walz and former President Bill Clinton both giving addresses.Among those freedoms: reproductive rights…
Look for Democrats to remind Americans repeatedly that Trump’s three Supreme Court justice appointments were instrumental in turning the court to a 6-3 conservative majority that overturned a constitutional right to an abortion.
Thursday, Aug. 22
The convention will conclude Thursday night with the theme “For our Future.” Harris, who was already nominated by the party through a virtual roll-call, will formally accept the nomination and deliver her address.Democrats will argue that a second Trump presidency would be “even more dangerous than the first one” and cast the election as a “fight for the future.”
The DNC confirmed other convention speakers include Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both of New York. The party did not say on which night each will speak.
How to watch
The DNC will air the convention live on its website, from the United Center in Chicago between 6:15 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern (5:15 p.m. to 10 p.m Central) on Monday, and 7 p.m to 11 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Central) the other days.C-SPAN, PBS and other news stations will livestream the convention and most will broadcast the major speeches live.

As a side note; since he knows he’s losing and can’t cope with an opponent not named ‘Biden’, trumpov is already throwing up chaff about “it was a coup” and “the election is rigged” to his supporters (per WaPo headline today).

@lowtechcyclist: I was both wrong to underestimate Biden’s all-star parliamentary skills in 20/20, and wrong about the degree to which Biden stepping aside in 2024 would reverse our electoral disadvantage. I thought switching to Harris would mostly just stop the bleeding. It has actually brought back hope in a much deeper way that I think extends beyond Democrats to the electorate as a whole. Sea-change is exactly the right term.
O. Felix Culpa
The line-up looks fantastic. I’m glad that our Democratic leadership forebears are getting a platform. They all served honorably, even if we might not agree with every policy they enacted or didn’t enact. They operated in a historical context that framed what was possible in their respective eras, plus they’re human and therefore with the usual set of fallibilities. Unlike the Republicans, who excel in having more than the usual set of fallibilities.
Shorter: I’m proud that we don’t need or choose to memory-hole our previous Democratic presidents and candidates, unlike what the R’s did with W.

@Bupalos: Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are a part of the process of moving away from Reaganism. Biden built on what they did and Harris will build on top of Biden’s work. Damn. Phil Donohue has died.
He was a talk show host who made talk shows a helluva lot more interesting, timely, and relevant than they’d been before.
He did special projects, like the talk show/diplomacy bridge with USSR media figure Vladimir Posner in the 1980s, which had American and Soviet civilians speaking directly to one another, in the heady days of glasnost.
He was a feminist, a gentleman and a scholar.
He was also an early casualty of the Iraqi War of Lies. He opposed the war, questioned its premise, and called the campaign to start the war a pack of lies. For this he and his show were unceremoniously dumped from MSNBC.
RIP, Phil. You were one of the greats.

Just read that Trump will finally be on the campaign trail again this week. Monday in Pennsylvania, Tuesday in Michigan, Wednesday in North Carolina, Thursday in Arizona, Friday in Arizona and Nevada. Having Trump trying to counter-program with “policy” speeches seems to me like excellent news for Democrats. He and his crowds will look pathetic compared to the convention, and he won’t say anything other than meanderingly list grievances because he never does.

Figuring out when the opening gavel happens isn’t easy. Time zones. And each site wants you to start when they do.
The DNC says it will begin at 630 EDT.
C-Span says they will offer a “preview” starting at 5:30 EDT. Coverage to begin at 6:15.
WaPo is unclear, but I have found their YouTube stream to be excellent quality. And they won’t offer a link now. You can search at YouTube around 6 ish.
Local TV in Chicago offering streams, too. Too many link. Google and YouTube search are your friends.
MSNBC will start something at 6 EDT. But that will be anchored by the loathsome Ari Melber. Rachel starts at 8.
Hoodie
@Omnes Omnibus: There’s a fine line to walk there. Dems have nothing to apologize for those earlier administrations – in their respective eras they were each about turning the page and were generally successful. The theme should be remembering them positively but making clear it’s not nostalgia for some lost paradise and more that Democrats have always looked forward and Republicans are bitter and unable to deal with change. Hence they subject all of us to Trump and his locked in the 70’s negativity.

To me it’s a no-brainer if you can get Beyonce, Swift, or whoever you absolutely do it knowing that it will result in tons of videos, tweets, attention, $ and hopefully votes. It’s also just fun and excitement. And the choice of artist also says something about our values and direction as a party. It will likely be artists that have strong appeal to young voters and PoC. And also artists who are outspoken about politics and freedom. The party that gets Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, whoever is infinitely better/cooler than the one that has to settle for Kid Rock (and other weirdos). It’s all about reinforcing the notion that the party is really happening over here on our side, so come join us.

Rescues can be like little kids — convinced the ‘new guy’ was brought in specifically to replace them. Some rescues get hella defensive; others (like maybe your guy?) quietly resign themselves to being ‘discarded’ yet again.

He goes out on the porch multiple times every day and looks out the back door like he’s looking for Nitro, even though he was there when Nitro died. I am sometimes guilty of the vice of name dropping, and even though I usually try to stop myself, here I go again. About a dozen years ago, I was newly separated and had moved into a rented condo in a large building. I needed furniture, so I responded to a notice tacked to the bulletin board in the mail room with tear-off phone number tabs (remember those?) by a resident who was moving out of state and wanted to sell some stuff. To my great surprise, the seller was Jeff Danziger, which I knew because he had the most fantastic computer lash-up I had ever seen until then, with multiple large-screen flat monitors attached to articulated arms all connected to a computer with a drawing pad and covered with artwork in the distinctive Danziger style. I suppose now every day trader and dedicated game player can boast something like that, but I was sick with jealousy then. That, alas, was not for sale, not that I could have afforded it.

But, this week is essentially political theater and both Clinton and Obama are supremely gifted political people, thus, having them up there doing what they do best ain’t a bad thing.
gvg
@Omnes Omnibus: He also BLOCKED much worse things. The trends were against us, and I include too many democrats. Bill gets blamed for things Congress did AND the public wanted.
Black citizens were asking for tougher drug laws and more policing because crime had risen before then and they were the victims more than others. They were overwhelmed and tired of it. At that time we didn’t know that crime rates were going to go down soon both in places that gave heavy sentences and light. After the fact we have guessed it might be removing lead from the environment, but then we didn’t know. We also didn’t know how much the heavier sentences would be slanted against black men.
Clinton tried to bring more equality for minorities. He protected women’s rights, even while being a hound dog himself (yes I know that doesn’t make much sense) and he was pro environment. He also was less extreme in dismantling capitalist regulations than most others at that time. It seemed like most people thought we didn’t need the FDR protections anymore or even anti monopoly rules.

mvr
@Omnes Omnibus: On past prez’s and pols. I’ve always been ambivalent about Clinton, but Obama shouldn’t be easily cast aside. If we were ever going to have a first black president he was going to be cautious by nature. This, IMHO, was part of his success but also why he deferred too much to more “experienced” advisors on things like the economy. That led to the too slow recovery from the Great Recession, but it also enabled him to be a calming figure early on while things were unstable and very scary. He is also just a great speaker and campaigner. I love the image of him in the rain at the end of the 2nd campaign (iirc) with Stevie Wonder playing in the background as he ended his talk.
Clinton had a lot of political talent, got more liberal after his term of office as the party did, and got himself elected. All good things. But he fucked up to allow scandal near him as president, thereby risking things that matter to many besides himself, and probably was an ass (at best) to more than one woman. Hence my ambivalence. Not that I’d deny him a speaking role.

No wait, I just remembered something else. One of the things one of his guests said must have been something about how “certified aerobics instructor” was meaningless, because I remember being very amused that the first audience question was “I am a certified aerobics instructor and…”

@mvr: Obama should always be front and center. People are going to ding him on various policy positions but I think the average normie Democrat loves the guy and doesn’t care too much about the details.

@tam1MI: He had his semi-annual visit in May, and the vet said he was healthy. He even had the extended bloodwork because he’s an old dog, but it didn’t detect anything unusual. I didn’t mention that I think he’s depressed, though. If it continues for much longer I’m going to contact the vet about it. Could be he’s just an old dog who isn’t that energetic anymore. I try not to anthropomorphize too much.

@Betty: Would be nice if more CW artists showed up. Who knows, maybe Garth will fly in on a zip line and Willie will pull up in the bus. The Chicks, Reba, LeAnn, EmmyLou, or Kacey are all long-time progressive advocates. There’s a lot to draw from.
Of course, if Beyonce, Taylor, and Dolly were to sing just one song together, well, the imagination just staggers.

@O. Felix Culpa:
This is an excellent point. Even if they dug up a former Republican president, which rotting corpse wouldn’t still be marinating in the blood of innocents? Lincoln?

@Soprano2: Yep. He was a surprise speaker at an even I attended several years ago. Fantastic stuff, but man, he did go on.

I downloaded the pdf of the 2024 party platform from the site @Baud: linked (democrats.org) and it’s titled ‘2020 Democratic Party Platform’ (bolding is mine). If it’s a typo I hope it’s corrected soon. Either way, the opposition party will no doubt make hay about it.

@Burnspbesq:
Since I don’t listen to country, I have no idea who this guy is. Is he really a country artist that’s a known liberal? I thought Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were the only ones.

@Ken:
Maybe W will be a surprise speaker this week! It appears he doesn’t support TCFG and has always surrounded himself with strong Black women.

IANAL, and the lawyers have weighed in on her case regarding use of her image, etc. But it seems like merely associating her with TCFG would violate the libel and slander laws. Even if she is a public figure.
