      @Gloria DryGarden: I think FoxNews might be losing its touch.  I’ve lived/worked among GOP-voting*, avid racists most of my life, and the ones who consider themselves open to maybe voting for a Dem until settling on “the one thing that compels them to vote for Trump” would totally have gone for selective FoxNews editing that seemed to imply that all the speakers were AA, and that the Dems were holding a “Ni-CLANG convention.”

      In the end, anyone who watches the Democratic Convention on FoxNews is a lost cause regardless of the particulars of the network’s editing choices.

       

      * They voted Democratic in my youth, and switched to the GOP around the same time my family switched from the now-extinct “liberal Republicans” to Democrats.

      @bobbo1: Emanuel is the US Ambassador to Japan, which means he is both a member of Biden’s administration and also a diplomat who should have the intelligence not to say something like that.  He’s certainly a candidate despite that because who the fuck would name that asshole for a diplomatic role?

      There were dozens and dozens of top Obama aides though, so many possible candidates who would be high-profile enough to know Barnacle personally.

      @David 🐝KHive🐝 Koch: Yeah, take it from the Boston readers: Barnicle got fired because he couldn’t match Mike Royko’s skill in attributing ‘I heard this guy say’ anecdotes in his columns.  The Boston Globe suits who fired him were taking much local heat for having just fired one of their few Black columnists (for the ‘sin’ of outing herself) & they hoped sh*tcanning MikeB would prove it was ‘just good journalistic methods’, not gross malpractice.

      I’d originally thought we’d just catch the last couple hours of the night, but we turned it on at 8 eastern “just to check in” and were riveted right up till Joe finished well after midnight.

      I’m glad I heard the union presidents. That was a powerful moment that really brought home how pro-labor How has been and Kamala will be. The whole evening was like that, powerful statement being made just by who was on stage, before they even spoke.

      its nice to be on the right side of history.

      I loved everyone I saw last night. The union Presidents, McMorrow, I’ve long been a fan of Gina Raimondo. AOC and Crockett were fire, as expected. I’m glad when they made the obligatory references to Crockett’s viral moments, they were fresh and not eye roll bait.

      Need to catch HRC and Biden on break today.  We have so much talent, verily our cup runs over.

      @opiejeanne: I heard Hillary speak to a room full of nurses, nurses aides, and other professional caregivers.  Just talking about their needs, the state of their industry, etc.

      She was so knowledgeable and empathetic.  She displayed a true understanding of the needs of professional and informal caregivers. She listened as much or more than she talked.

      It was wonderful. Not the sort of stuff they broadcast on TV.

      ETA: Personal note for the morning; whatever they’re doing to the Red Line (Boston public transport), at this point it better end with teleporters.

      ETA: I will say it ruffled my feathers a bit during a speech where she announced the banning of flavored vapes, she compared them to chocolate milk and crossed the line to assert chocolate milk is only for kids.

      Hell with that, I love chocolate milk. I can live without flavored vapes but chocolate milk is balm for the soul.

      Exactly. If our relationship with another country is complicated or fraught (e.g. Turkiye, Israel, Russia), the President will almost always appoint an ambassador who’s able to handle real diplomacy. But to an ally that we have a pretty straightforward relationship with, an ambassadorship is almost always a plum appointment as a reward for other service where they can’t really do any harm while staff does the real work, or (as in this case) a way of getting someone out of the way in a diplomatic manner.

      An adept play by Biden to do that with Rahm.

      @The Kropenhagen Interpretation: Nikki Budzinski, WaterGirl’s new Congresswoman, is another talented Democrat. Budzinski made last evening’s “Wecome to Chicago” post with some remarks about her former boss, Jay Pritzker.

      We don’t hear much about Nikki Budzinski because she never speaks in any high profile hearings, but instead serves on the Agriculture and Veteran’s Affairs Committees. But Budzinski has a ton of practical political experience under her belt, and a lot of potential.

      Hence the asterisk was on the term ‘unfuck’ rather than on Raimondo’s name.

      Great characterization.  I’d posit that Rahm’s career experience actually makes him a good candidate for an ambassadorship like the one he has.  He’s experienced running a big staff, dealing with a broad context of people and situations, etc.

      And as you say, given the nature of the US-Japan relationship, he’s not really there to be “diplomatic”.

      He’s still an asshole but at least he’s been an asshole who ain’t around the halls of power.

      She has a ton of union experience which is a massive plus.  I have a friend in Champaign who’s a big fan. It’s great to have very pro-union Dems coming up to national prominence.

      Heh heh, although no fault of her own, don’t look at her district too closely if gerrymandering, no matter who does it, is offensive.  Not the worst I’ve seen but not the best.

      Check out Nikki Budzinski’ds Wikipedia page when you have a few minutes. I was impressed. Budzinski was one of the very few* members of our 2022 House Class with no prior elective office, but in ways she was one of the most experienced of all.

      Budzinski went to work for a union after she graduated from the University of Illinois ~1999. She played important roles in Jay Pritzker’s first campaign and administration, and was working as chief of staff for Joe Biden’s OMB Director when she resigned to run for Congress.

      That was after Illinois Democrats produced their new congressional map. Republicans complained that Pritzker and his allies designed the new 13th CD with Budzinki in mind, and they were probably coreect.

      * Maxwell Frost of Florida and Budzinski’s two Illinois colleagues, Eric Sorenson and Jonathan Jackson, are three others. I’m not sure how to classify Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington because she served on her local Soil and Water Conservation Board, a minor elective post.
