Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

People are weird.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Books are my comfort food!

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

NOT breaking news: Terry Gene Bollea is an asshole (open thread)

The washed-up 71-year-old former WWE performer who calls himself “Hulk Hogan” got drunk and made a fool of himself Monday (PennLive):

In a video obtained by TMZ, the retired wrestler at one point asked a cheering crowd, “Do you want me to body slam Kamala Harris?”

“Want me to drop the leg on Kamala?” he added, referring to one of his iconic wrestling moves.

The dramatically mustachioed quarter-wit also made dumb and offensive comments about Harris’s heritage, invoking ignorant stereotypes about Native Americans because he’s more clueless than Columbus. Later, he blamed beer:

Hogan later walked back his comments and suggested that the remarks he made was not a true representation of himself. He also blamed the comments on the alcoholic drinks he drank at the bar.

“I am going to get heat for that one, brother. That was not me. That was the beers talking,” he added before the video stopped.

No, Bollea — that was your racist, misogynist, drunk ass talking. We see you.

Bollea and his idiot, criminal kids and related hangers-on live in my media market. They all go by Hogan for some reason and are frequently covered by the local news when they maim people in car crashes, etc. Just garbage people who should fuck off into the sun.

Lest anyone think this was a one-off:

You know how Republicans think that you can’t be racist unless you use the “n-word”?  Well, Hogan Bollea has used the “n-word”.  Repeatedly. On tape.

So yeah, even by the very lax Republican definition, this bozo is a racist.  And of course he spoke at Trump’s convention!

Learning Trump has declared war on Google and lemme opine this is the payoff to Vance’s money dudes, who are all het on breaking up Google and whatever they’re calling Facebook now, Meta? Thiel et al are specifically looking to access the WH via Vance to advance their businesses and mow down their larger, more influential competition. And now, Trump is asking if what Google is doing in their election coverage and Trump coverage, “legal?”

He’s not scratching an itch, he’s cashing techbro checks and doesn’t give a fvck about how the googles work. That’s Barron’s jerb IIRC.

@Trollhattan: Breaking up Google wouldn’t be a bad idea: it was recently found guilty of monopolistic behavior, and it’s searches are now garbage (between the ads and the AI “assist”).

I realize Trump/Thiel/et al want to break it up to enhance their own business, but the truth is Google hasn’t been the “good guy” for a while now.

    Dropkick Murphy FTW! 💙

New Jersey will use federal dollars to purchase and forgive $100 million in medical debt held by more than 46,000 residents, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Tuesday.

The state will use roughly $550,000 in federal American Rescue Plan funds to purchase the debt through a partnership with Undue Medical Debt, a Long Island-based nonprofit that purchases patients’ debts but does not move to collect them.

That’s how you continue to do pandemic relief! 😍

    Ye gods Boeing.

Boeing (BA) paused test flights of its 777X fleet, its new flagship aircraft, after a routine inspection uncovered damage to a part that connects the engine to the plane’s body, the company said Monday. Several planes in the fleet showed similar cracks in the structure.

“During scheduled maintenance, we identified a component that did not perform as designed,” a Boeing (BA) spokesperson said. “Our team is replacing the part and capturing any learnings from the component and will resume flight testing when ready.”

There are currently 481 orders for the 777X, whose commercial rollout — originally slated for 2020 — has been pushed back until 2025, according to One Mile at a Time. Almost half of those orders are from Emirates, which placed a $52 billion order for the wide-body planes last year to replace its retiring Airbus (EADSY) A380s.

Also on Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered inspections into Boeing’s 787 Dreamliners, related to a March incident that injured 50 when a pilot unexpectedly slammed forward into the controls while piloting a LATAM Airlines flight.

The airworthiness directive will require airlines to inspect the captains’ and first officers’ seats for missing or cracked rocker switch caps or for cracked switch cover assemblies on 787-7, 787-9, and 787-10 planes within 30 days. The inspection will affect 158 U.S.-registered aircraft and 737 planes worldwide.

“We fully support the FAA’s Airworthiness Directive which makes mandatory a supplier’s guidance to 787 operators,” Boeing said in a statement.

TBF connecting engines to the plane doesn’t really affect legroom, so YOLO.

I think it was Mark Cuban in an interview a few weeks ago who pointed out something the MSM has really missed (from what I can tell) wrt these tech billionaires all coming around to Trump: it’s not tech culture or Silicon Valley as such that they’re representing, it’s crypto. “This is a big crypto play,” as he put it. They basically want Trump to scotch any regulation or oversight of crypto so they can cash in on speculation and other related grifts over the next four years.

Russian defenses shot down dozens of armed drones, including several in the Moscow region, in one of the biggest assaults on Russian territory since the war began, Russian authorities said Wednesday.
Some of the drones were shot down over Podolsk, a city of more than 300,000 people about 20 miles south of the Kremlin, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.
“This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever,” Sobyanin said in a social media post Wednesday. “The layered defense of Moscow that was created made it possible to successfully repel all the attacks.”

According to analyst Michael Mulvihill, the overnight ratings for night two, from seven combined networks, indicate the DNC had 11.9 million viewers for the 10 p.m. – 11:45 p.m. ET timeline. This compared to the RNC’s second night — which had 7.7 million for the 10 p.m. – 11:15 p.m. ET timeslot — is a 55% increase.

This is an even more drastic difference than night one, which featured a 21% increase of DNC watchers over the RNC’s viewership.

CNN posted some Trump quotes from his interview with Hugh Hewitt.

“I was mentioned at the Democrats’ little party that they have going on in Chicago, and it’s pretty sad,” he said on the “The Hugh Hewitt Show.”

Trump said that Democrats didn’t talk about violent crime in the city, “but I was mentioned, I think, almost 200 times. And they mentioned the economy about five times. They mentioned the border maybe none. They mentioned crime almost none. So, I mean, they’re out of control.”

Trump also mentioned the scheduled upcoming debate with Harris on September 10 and how he would counter her line of attack that she’s a prosecutor and he is a convicted felon.

“Actually, actually, it’s pretty simple. I’m going to say they’re the ones that started it. They did this against their political opponent. I’m their political opponent, and they started all of this, and it’s never been done in this country before. And I’m a totally innocent person. And the people know that,” Trump said.

The former president also said he thought Democrats are “making it very hard for Israel to win” and that Harris was “giving the other side tremendous hope” when he was asked about Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

Democrats are just so mean to him and they started it!  Waaaaah!

The 14-term congressman was hospitalized for nearly a month this summer after experiencing a fever related to a respiratory illness. He was discharged to a rehabilitation center on Aug. 7 but was readmitted to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., just four days later.
The feisty octogenarian was the second-oldest House member, behind only retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Calif. The oldest member of Congress is Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who turns 91 on Sept. 17.
Pascrell was the second New Jersey congressman to die this year. Fellow Democrat Donald Payne Jr. died on April 24 at the age of 65 after suffering a heart attack related to diabetes complications.
Pascrell had been running for re-election to his 9th District seat in November.
Because the vacancy has occurred before an Aug. 27 deadline — 70 days before the general election — Democratic county committee members will be able to handpick a new nominee by Aug. 29, according to state election law.
Pascrell had been seeking a 15th term and was the favorite against Republican Billy Prempeh, his opponent during his last two elections. In 2022, Pascrell defeated Prempeh by more than double digits, 55% to 43% in the deep-blue 9th Congressional District; Joe Biden trounced Trump there in 2020 by 19 percentage points.

@catclub: no, this is why NDI is done for some of those components.  Otherwise you get what happened to the F-15 fleet back in 2007.

For those that don’t want to click the link: The nose section of an F-15 fell off in mid flight. Pilot ejected safely. The after accident investigation determined that the two main support braces that connected the nose to the main body had hair line cracks in them due to 1) exceeding the flight hours on the frame and 2) there was no inspection performed on those parts. The AF subsequently grounded the entire F-15 fleet, performed Non-Destructive Inspections (NDI) on the entire fleets connectors, and found that almost 50% of them had hairline cracks. It was cost prohibitive to replace them, so instead they retired 50% of the fleet because we were supposed to have an equal number of F-22s coming to us. And ofc that didn’t happen. Whomp whomp.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will make a speech in Phoenix on Friday, his campaign announced, as the independent presidential candidate considers whether to drop out of the race and endorse former President Donald Trump.
The campaign said Kennedy will “address the nation” Friday morning, without sharing details of what he will be speaking about. CNN has asked the campaign for additional information.
Kennedy’s speech will come days after his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, said in a podcast interview on Tuesday that the campaign is considering whether to “join forces” with Trump to prevent the “risk” of Vice President Kamala Harris winning the election.

@Geminid: yeah, I remember that. Slight difference in this instance though. If you look at an F-15, from just behind the glass to the tip of the nose cone, that’s the forward fuselage. That’s the part that fell off.

There’s also the case of the F-15 that had the controls connected backwards, and the pilot died right at take off.

Edit: there’s also A-10s that were absolutely shot beyond hell in Iraq that landed safely.

“I was impressed,” said Lt. Col. Mike Millen, chief of the 355th Fighter Wing Commander’s Action Group and an A-10 pilot. “Kim landed that jet with no hydraulics better than I land the A-10 every day with all systems operational.”

@The Kropenhagen Interpretation: The Post had this hilarious bit:

The latest moves follow a clear shift in the public posture of the Kennedy campaign following a last-ditch attempt, through intermediaries, to reach out to the Democratic campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris in early August. The Kennedy campaign commissioned polling to show how Harris could improve her standing in the race if she announced that Kennedy would have a cabinet level position, and then attempted to share those results with the Harris team, according to campaign officials and a copy of the polling results obtained by The Washington Post.

Harris allies have rebuffed requests for meeting, and dismissed Kennedy as a “MAGA-funded fringe candidate.” Following that statement, Kennedy and his allies have grown increasingly fierce in their denunciations of the Democratic Party.

Shorter Harris campaign: “Fuck off, asshole”.

Robert F Kennedy Jr has said that he doesn’t want to be former President Donald Trump’s running mate because he doesn’t “think that my marriage would survive it”.

The ex-Democratic, now independent candidate for president spoke to Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which stars his wife, actress Cheryl Hines.

“I think he’s right,” Ms Hines added to the magazine regarding her husband joining the Trump campaign.

More lies and fantasies from the Trump rally today:  NBC

During his campaign event in Asheboro, North Carolina, Trump claimed that, if he’s re-elected to the White House, he would solve global conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, and Israel and Hamas, before he’s inaugurated.
“If we win, I’ll get that thing settled before I take the office. I’ll get it settled, as president-elect, I’ll get that war to stop,” he said.

    and

“Did you see Barack Hussein Obama last night take those shots? He was taking shots at your president, and so was Michelle,” Trump said. “You know, they always say, ‘Sir, please stick to policy. Don’t get personal.’ And yet they’re getting personal. All night long, these people. Do I still have to stick to policy?”

Ha ha ha. Trump is mad that his campaign team is trying to control him.  LOL

After this story published, country music star Maren Morris was spotted by CNN’s team on-the-ground in Chicago doing a sound check.

Morris will also perform Wednesday night, according to a convention official.

Update to the viewer numbers from last night.

The second night of the Democratic National Convention saw just a slight lift in viewership as 20.6M people tuned in across 12 networks, according to Nielsen.

That’s about half a million more than the first night, once again besting the audience for the Republican National Convention, which suffered from a steep decline to just 14.8M viewers in its second night.

Waiting for a new thread but here goes: we may have had a Moti hit squad in our metroplex.

A prominent Sacramento-area Sikh leader’s pickup truck was fired upon on a highway near Winters in what his organization and an international expert believe was an assassination attempt.

Satinder Pal Singh Raju, a Woodland resident and a leader in the Khalistan movement to establish a homeland for Sikhs, as well as two other Sikh activists were unharmed in the shooting, which happened about 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 along Interstate 505. Officer Rodney Fitzhugh, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol’s Woodland office, said gunfire was reported on I-505 near County Road 27 in rural Yolo County, about 11 miles southwest of Woodland.

According to a CHP log of the incident, Raju’s Dodge Ram 1500 was impounded as part of the investigation. The FBI would not comment on whether it was investigating the incident, or if it believes the shooting was part of a growing domestic and international threat it has been tracking. The threats involve foreign governments and are known as “transnational repression,” in which overseas states target perceived enemies living abroad.

But an intelligence expert and the group Sikhs for Justice believe that the shooting was unlikely to have been random. They allege that India, which has been behind several plots against Sikh leaders in the U.S. and elsewhere, could be behind the troubling Northern California attack.

But Cheney has a higher profile plus she’s a woman, so I expect she draws extra attention from vindictive nuts

I just heard on MSNBC that Stevie Wonder is going to perform (unless, y’know, they James Taylor him). That’s pretty exciting.

Looking forward to hearing what Secretary Pete has to say. Bill Clinton, in what feels like the flash of an eye, has transformed from gifted young politician-horndog into an éminence grise, and he’s usually pretty entertaining. I think we’re also getting Nancy and Hakeem tonight. But of course Tim Walz is tonight’s main draw, and from what I’ve seen of him in the last three weeks he will light that place up!

Got back from grocery shopping a little while ago and was wearing one of my new Harris-Walz t-shirts. One guy, a 60-ish white guy, tracked me all over the Publix parking lot before pulling up to tell me “I love your shirt!” I did my standard response (“Are you registered to vote?”)  Then he told me that he and his wife met at Howard University, where they were both students; he and Kamala were on campus at the same time, although different years and different academic/social circles, so he didn’t know her. But he’s enormously proud of the Howard connection, and it’s a pleasure for me to know that there are 60-ish white guys in Atlanta’s northern suburbs who are happy warrior Democrats.
