I was thinking today about that old game we used to play when I was a kid called telephone, where you would sit in a circle and the teacher would whisper a phrase in one person’s ears and then each student would whisper the information as they received it and then compare the introductory message with the message the final message received by the last student. You would hten giggle and learn a valuable lesson on signal to noise and mistranslation. But were we really?
Because in the year 2024 everyone can see the same digital image and the same video and audio via crystal clear digital recordings and we can send verbatim text messages and still half the people get it wrong. So was it really noise and translation or are we just surrounded by a bunch of people who are stupid as fuck?
Speaking of stupid as fuck, check out ole Alex Thompson from Axios and CNN:

The gotcha in question that shows Walz is a liar liar pants on fire. Strap in.
Walz, 20 years ago when running for office, stated in his bio that he won an aware from the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce.
But it wasn’t the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce. It was the Nebraska Junior Chamber of Congress. And he corrected it in his bio.
The only fucking thing Trump was right about was his treatment of the press, albeit for all the wrong fucking reasons.
Finally, I ask- if you have not cancelled your subscription to the NY Times, what are you fucking waiting for:

Seems pretty much that there isn’t very much to get. He seems to have led a rather normal human life. Doesn’t need a secrets box or a place to hide one. Many of the people who write on national papers seem to have had “issues” that tell them that they are normal/all fucked up. That’s a saying we used often in the USN “Situation normal – all fucked up.” I had 6 captains, that saying applied to 4 of them, 2 on rare occasions and 2 on a daily basis.

The moment I finally understood why the news media was the way it was came after Clinton lost in 2016 and there was a flurry of big-name “journalists” (and many, many smaller names) getting nailed for various acts of sexual harassment they’d committed over the years. Chris Matthews was one. Halperin was another.
Aside from the sexism and the creepiness of that sort of thing, harassment is more than anything an act of power. It’s what a privileged person does to someone he considers less privileged.
And that explained a hell of a lot.

So did anyone here see the disgusting photo of Trump in Arlington National Cemetary? Charles Pierce at Esquire wrote a great column about it (sorry, paywall). The Orange Ass is pictured with a shit-eating grin, giving a thumbs-up to the camera over a veteran’s grave. I mean….WTF? My husband, who is a former Marine who served in Vietnam, is increasingly growing furious with the disrespect that that idiot is showing to the military. It’s also in the Arlington rules that the cemetery should not be used for partisan event.

What possessed the NYT to print that thing? I suspect they think they have to have ‘conservative voices’? You ask ‘what about David French?’ Well he turned out to be a that rarest of beasts, a genuinely principled conservative, so despite the evangelical religion, pro-life views, gun-ownership and the like, he sees Trump for what he is and is willing to say what he sees. Bret Stephens? Though unwilling to vote for Harris (because she isn’t exactly the candidate he wants the Democrats to run? because she hasn’t professed her faith in the gospel of laisse-faire? I don’t know), he has been forthright in his opposition to Trump. So they are not real conservatives, because by definition (according to the NYT) conservatism is Trumpism. Sure, give us a wide spectrum of views, but if there is a view that can’t be defended by an honest, thoughtful, decent human being–and Trump can’t be supported by anyone who satisfies that description–you don’t have to give it space.

I continue to believe that the editorial decisions of the Vichy Times, like those of, eg, CNN these days, are motivated primarily by business — maintain access to both sides, create/boost excitement even if it’s not deserved in order to increase viewership and thereby ad revenue, support the careers of junior staff, etc. — as well as purely personal interests of owners and senior editors — get those sweet tax cuts, keep those high-end dinner invitations coming — but in the case of the Vichy Times, because it’s led by an increasingly obviously incompetent failson (or grandson or whatever), it’s not being executed very well.
The result seems to be something akin to the Republican GOTV effort. They’re being milked by a cadre of self-interested grifters, eg the Doubtthats and the Sparklepants, whom they don’t seem to know should be kicked to the curb.
It used to be more of a problem, when the Wizard of Times Square was still the Wizard. But increasingly they’re revealed as just a humbug, and they’re no longer seen as the apotheosis of journalism. It’s a shame because they still do excellent investigative and overseas (nonpolitical) journalism. Sic transit gloria mundi.

The technical term for this is mondegreen. IIRC there was an episode of Murphy Brown where various characters were comparing their mistakes, but the only one I recall is “The ants are my friends” from “Blowin’ In The Wind.”
I recall someone reporting that while speedreading through Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire he screeched to a halt a few lines after having encountered a word he read as horseradish. He looked back through the text and discovered the actual word in question was heresiarch – a word I’d never seen before and have never seen again but which is far more Gibbonish than a rooty condiment often used on corned beef.
