Yes, let’s investigate, shall we? Let’s investigate, (for the 3rd or 4th time), the whole, shitty deal Trump made with the Taliban before dumping the entire mess in Biden’s lap.
The story doesn’t make clear that Vance made his nasty remark before a town hall crowd. And those people ate it up, much like they always wake up when Trump uses the word bullsh*t. But Hell, that’s what they’re there for, isn’t it? It’s not the politics, it’s the nastiness.

One problem with the “believes it” defense is that TCFG is inconsistent, spitting out whatever shit he feels like at that exact moment, whatever benefits him then, with no regard to whatever he claimed before. A pure Markov chain of bullshit, spinning out gilded fetid white noise in all directions. There’s certainly no long-term coherent belief structure underlying it (beyond Me Me Me and Mine Mine Mine) and I somehow doubt he makes the minimal effort to believe the statement as it is uttered. Pure Frankfurtian bullshit.

It’s the gift that keeps on giving. Or the grift that has legs.
This morning, The Daily Caller (not linking) revealed in an “exclusive” that Trump was having a difficult time getting into Arlington Cemetery along with his entourage. Then the team contacted Rep. Mike McCaul who also contacted Speaker Johnson. Whatever that intervention was, it got Trump and his entourage into the cemetery for their photo op and eventual campaign video.
So not just Trump, but McCaul and Johnson were responsible for this disgusting display.
Here is the Politics USA version:

The video mentions Trump lying about the 2020 election.
If you go back and carefully rewatch the speech Trump gave at the Arizona border, he admits that he actually lost the 2020 election but said it was by just a little bit. That’s something that I would run with if I were campaigning against him.

@JWR: The CBS 7am radio news started with the Arlington story, and that report finished with a soundbite of Vance’s accusation that Harris “yelled” at Trump and could “go to hell.” The news reader followed that with, “Harris has not commented on the incident.”
A later news show recounted Vance’s scurrilous statement but did not play it, and again pointed out that Harris has not spoken about the Arlington affair.*
This story is staying in the news, and the Trump camp is helping keep it there against their own interests.
* I bet Harris and Walz speak effectively about Arlington in today’s CNN interview, though. They’ll find a way even if they’re not asked about it. Trump just threw Harris and Walz a hanging curveball and I expect them to hit it for distance.

Afghanistan Withdrawal Facts
Trump not Biden Negotiated directly with the Taliban terrorists and excluded the Afghan army.
Trump not Biden Drew down US forces from 13,000 to 2,500, making them vulnerable to attack.
Trump not Biden Ordered the release of 5,000
Taliban fighters from prison, one of whom would become the new leader of Afghanistan.
Trump not Biden Wanted to invite the Taliban leaders to Camp David on the anniversary of September 11th. Seriously.
Trump not Biden Agreed to a May Ist exit from Afghanistan, then bragged that he didn’t need an exit strategy.
Trump not Biden Refused to brief Biden’s incoming team on the situation in Afghanistan.
Trump not Biden Shut down every airbase in Afghanistan except one, crippling the US’s ability to extract its assets safely.

The thing about “lying” is that, in today’s easily-manipulated, “anything *can* be fake therefore *everything must be* digital world, combined with the Fascist Right’s slavish devotion to Whatever Dear Leader Says Is Always True, coupled with the vast psychological brain-breaking the COVID pandemic caused in society writ large…
Things like “truth” and “facts” quite literally do not matter any more to a wide swath of the human race.
The bit about “all politicians lie” I can understand is a bit rankling, seeing as how there’s a big difference between what Trump and the Fascist GOP do and say, and, say, insert your favorite politician here and when they give a strategic non-answer that someone like WaPo concludes is “mostly true” or whatever.
The “both sides” bit is categorically false and damaging.
However there is a kernel of truth in the sense that, many, many times, party affiliation notwithstanding, politicians will stand up at a town hall or a “debate” and will give soaring rhetorical answers that fail to directly address someone’s question, or actually explain what they stand for or believe in.
Yes, there’s a big, Grand Canyon-sized gulf between what the Fascist Republican Party wants to do to this country and what Democrats generally want to do.
But the general public has become so cynical and jaded by generations of politicians doing what they often do best – *serve themselves* – that, for as inaccurate as such a sentiment is, I can legitimately understand where some of these people get it from.

@zhena gogolia: That was.my thought. Walz is not a liar, nor do I believe Harris is. Doesn’t mean they don’t sometimes mis-remember or get something wrong.

Not certain, but the way I read it was he was saying that attempting to turn Trump away from joining the Gold Star families’ ceremony should never have happened to them. Implying that what the Gold Star families wanted (really, what Trump wanted) should be the most important thing, not federal law or respect for other fallen military members and their families. He was trying to shift the blame to the Arlington staff and trying to change the focus to sympathy for the Gold Star families instead of on Trump’s debacle.

@zhena gogolia: I think that actually makes it stronger, because whenever I bring up TCFG’s lying to people they inevitably say “But all politicians lie”, which is mostly true, because politicians spin the truth to be whatever is most favorable to them even if they don’t exactly lie. It’s the type and degree of TCFG’s lying that’s the problem, and the fact that even when he’s called out on it he continues to tell the lie anyway. I mean, I take your point, but polls in the Midwest are extremely close. Straight up ties or +1 leads in either direction. The Siena polls were some of the best, but those are a month old. These are singular data points, but they don’t point to a clear win. Emerson is a good pollster and their swing state polling out today shows…an extremely close race. Certainly an improvement on Biden’s position, but not what I hoped to see post-convention. I know lots of folks don’t like or agree with poll talk, but I think the race is a lot closer than we’d hope. Even the KH team said recently their internals were not as rosy as public polling. I trust them to get the strategy right. I’m going to keep sending postcards and donating, join a textbank, etc., but this is a very close race, at least on its face, so I’d expect people to focus on that. The overall trend has been good. I am buoyed seeing the registration numbers. I hope we’ll see more separation with the debate.

a) not an online form, a physical form. The preprinted postage paid envelope is to the correct address. The instructions are correct.
b) I had run across the organization previously, just hadn’t looked at them in depth. A follow up shows them as legit both looking directly and looking through a couple of cross references.
c) the warning about being cautious of other organizations sending you registrations is valid and appreciated and good advice across the board.
Again, in my case it is literally unnecessary as all residents at my house are already registered. Having checked the validity I’m quite comfortable sharing it to someone else
eta – just reread the application. I’m going to have to toss it, not give it to someone else. There’s one pre-printed set of blocks: my address. So it’s unusable for anyone else.

Prometheus Shrugged
@Sean: The trends in the cross tabs in Pennsylvania have been encouraging–Harris showing big movement in >60 year old block. I’d be more worried if having to rely on the always unpredictable young voter turnout. (If the youths do turn out, then it’s a rout.) That said, it really looks to me as if the election will come down to taking one of Pennsylvania, North Carolina or Georgia. Track records in these states are decidedly mixed, so I don’t have a clue what to think.

@Omnes Omnibus: Of course, you are right. I just feel like when women say women shouldn’t be able to vote, they are basically volunteering to have themselves scrubbed from the voter rolls.
Matt McIrvin
@Sean: What I figure is, the whole point of GOTV, registration, etc. efforts is to create the kind of gains that *won’t show up* in polls, because polls are based on some specific turnout model or no turnout model at all. This is all altering the relationship between your support levels and your vote.
I think the poll bump we got when Harris came in is all the bump we’re going to get. Everything else is going to be about boosting turnout in a race that appears static.
Baud
@Matt McIrvin:
Sounds right. Harris got a bump from Dems coming home.
BR
@Matt McIrvin:
You may be right. The new Quinnipiac national poll has Harris +2 with third parties and +1 head to head.
Formerly disgruntled in Oregon
@Matt McIrvin: Turnout, and the enthusiasm to drive it, are going to decide this election.
Matt McIrvin
@Baud: Harris is a “Democratic base” choice, not a “please the swing voter” choice. Lefties may not feel that way, because they think of her as a moderate, but just picking a black woman is like cranking a giant siren stating what we’re for. Even in 2024, that’s not going to win us a broad majority. But it fires up our side. So it’s not an easy win. But it could be a win.

People like shitforbrains and JDV have always been a part of humanity but current communications allow them to be more than a small town mayor, or the wino who lives in the alley behind the liquor store. and sfb inherited a bit of money when his scum landlord father died. OK stole a bunch of it from his siblings but still, he has never earned a cent, most of it was stolen money.

Matt McIrvin
@Formerly disgruntled in Oregon: Trump won in 2016 by outperforming his polls, and that was by bringing out a whole category of low-propensity voters who were fired up to support him.
So poll numbers aren’t destiny. The turnout model could be off. A priori, that’s not comforting at all. They could be off in our side’s favor like in 2016.
Except that this isn’t just a random variable. It’s something that people have some control over. It’s GOTV.

Isn’t the saying in the entertainment/news business “We report, you decide.”
They don’t have to be correct or actually tell the truth, you get to decide if you like what they say or not. Of course many will not actually decide, they will accept. It’s easier, less effort and they can never be blamed…

I do too. Especially since the cemetery management could have filed charges themselves. Maybe not for assault charges but at the very least for violating federal law. The National Park Service will charge visitors for misusing the parks and destroying property. Why can’t Arlington National Cemetery charge them with something?

A local conservative Chicago broadcaster ended up quitting her position as a high school volleyball coach after making fun of Gus Walz. Her “apology” was ridiculous.

@Karen S.: Thanks for that link. Very interesting. Good on all the parents in that school with children with disabilities to fight back and demand she be fired
The guy she does the radio show with (Proft) apologized the next day and defended himself by saying he was “unaware” that Gus had learning disabilities. That struck me as typical of right wing radio jocks and social media influencers. Don’t bother to check the facts, just promote the message and keep it going and make it viral. So by the time there is a fact check, it doesn’t matter. It’s already become fact to their followers.
First, how could either one of them not know about Gus?
And second, even if they didn’t know his diagnoses, HE IS 17 YEARS OLD!
Cruelty is the purpose. Apologies for being caught being assholes will not cut it

On the contrary, he’s an excellent con man. It’s probably his one talent.
For a con man to be a success, a great success even, he doesn’t have to convince most people. He just needs to con enough marks to keep lots of money flowing in. Which, indubitably, he does. Over and over again.

Joe Biden would never stand behind the Seal of the President of the United States and say “I’m not responsible”. He was CIC on the day of. He understands that it’s not only political suicide and would damage Harris and the next 10 generations of Democratic candidates to say such a thing, he would find it personally, morally reprehensible.
