Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

In after Baud. Damn.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

When I was faster i was always behind.

This really is a full service blog.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Live at 3:15, 2:15, 1:15 and 12:15 – hopefully. I won’t be around if it gets pushed, so fingers crossed.

Also, since we can’t take our foot off the gas, here are some quiet races I’m watching for House and Senate:

In Colorado, we really need to keep Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo, and she’s in a tough race, especially since the Libertarian dropped out. That helped swing things her way last election.  I’m doing what I can for her district, since mine is safe.

I don’t think throwing money at Boebert’s opponent will matter – that district is going to do one of two things – vote red and elect her or stay home (possibly vote “other”) I doubt they’ll actually vote blue. The Dem only has a chance with low Republican turnout. Which is a possibility considering how disfunctional the COGOP is right now.

And for the Senate, in Nebraska, this surprise (to me, former BJ commenter BGinCHI flagged him) Senate candidate is polling about even with the incumbent. I’m not sure if it’s fundraiser-worthy – but even though he’s an independent*, it could help our Senate chances. Looking at his platform, I’m assuming he’ll vote with the Dems. About Dan Osborn – platform   Here’s his intro video. Since CO senate seats are safe, I’ve been throwing some cash his way.

NE has an abortion amendment on the ballot (for pro-choice) and there is large support for that, which is why I think Osborn has a more than good chance to flip that seat. Also, his last name is Osborn and in NE that’s name recognition, even if it’s spelled differently.

It also looks like Tony Vargas in Nebraska could push Bacon from his congressional seat. For reasons I don’t quite understand, Bacon did not get the Republican nod. Not MAGA enough? I’m decades away from paying attention to NE politics, so that’s just a guess.

*Jay C says that Osborn may be an independent because the Dems never qualified a candidate. I also think running as an Independent could work in his favor.

Otherwise, open thread

I thought I read that the NE Dems declined to run a Senate candidate in order to clear the way for Osborn, like they did in Utah an election cycle or two back.

    Caraveo’s outraised her opponent 4:1.

Interestingly, she was running TV ads during a ton of commercial breaks during NBC golf’s Tour Championship Coverage Labor Day weekend.

But yeah, she’s gonna need all the GOTV, coat tails, etc., on this one. Our glibertarian, techbro governor won with 58% of the vote last time statewide but only 52% in her district.  Enough of the district as it moves to the northeast might as well be CO-4 in terms of demographics and voting patterns, hence why it was drawn the way it was.  If CO had partisan gerrymandering, they would have carved that off to dump into CO-4 and make CO-8 (her district) very (D).

Actually, I like this district because it’s an example of how competitive congressional districts should be drawn.

    @sdhays:

I got my info from a Nebraska commenter on another blog: not sure just WHY Dan Osborn is running as I, rather than D, but he is: and if he can pull just enough to flip the seat, it probably won’t make much of a difference. Except in the Senate, of course

Speaking of investing, IRS has shown an increase in profits from auditing rich deadbeats.  Who knew (besides DFHs) that investing in tax collection would result in more taxes collected?

My wife and I are genuinely stunned Dick Cheney has also said he would vote for Harris.

Now I wouldn’t be surprised if Bush did, and then I can finally foresee the GOP party breaking upon the rocks of the Trump era after another electoral loss. So we need to make sure that happens, and spread out that money to more Senate chances because woof Montana is too scary for comfort!

@Paul W.: I’ve said it before, but back in the 2000s the prevailing wisdom on the left was that we should follow the money wrt the Neocons. They were “only in it for the oil”. That wisdom was wrong. They genuinely believed in democracy (a narrow, market-oriented democracy with white people at the top, but democracy nonetheless). So to me this isn’t that surprising, but I realize this is a contentious issue.

My stepson is getting laid off when his company closes his branch in NE Ohio. They want him to move to subarban Philadelphia, but that is too far from his whole support system, including his fiance who doesn’t want to move.

Thankfully we just gave him our old house as an early inheritance. No rent, just property tax and insurance. I am so glad I could land this in his lap.

And he was a skillset (machining and welding) that is marketable. Not every kid has to go to college to get a marketable skill.

When we want to fix things around here and I am not physically strong enough to do it, I hum and haw a bit and wait for my stepson. He is extremely mechanical, unlike his father.

I’m with the people saying that the Cheneys are only on our side because *they* want to be running the Republican show, to eventually put them, or at least their friends, into control of the country under some soft authoritarian system. @kylegriffin1

Dick Cheney confirms he’s voting for Vice President Harris: “In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.   “As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”

The two brothers have spent recent weeks touting World Liberty Financial, their soon-to-be-launched, shrouded-in-secrecy cryptocurrency firm.
But a string of mishaps, including Trump family members getting hacked by scammers and concerns about World Liberty’s deep connections to a blockchain firm that lost $2 million because of security shortfalls, has some arguing they should pack it up before they begin.

Some concerning news out of Florida

DeSantis’ election police questioned people who signed abortion petitions

Isaac Menasche remembers being at the Cape Coral farmer’s market last year when someone asked him if he’d sign a petition to get Florida’s abortion amendment on the ballot.

He said yes — and he told a law enforcement officer as much when one showed up at the door of his Lee County home earlier this week.

Menasche said he was surprised when the plainclothes officer twice asked if it was really Menasche who had signed the petition. The officer said he was looking into potential petition fraud.
    . . .

Theofficer’s visit appears to be part of a broad — and unusual — effort by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration to inspect thousands of already verified and validated petitions for Amendment 4 in the final two months before Election Day. The amendment would overturnFlorida’s six-week abortion ban by proposing to protectabortion access in Florida until viability.

Since last week, DeSantis’ secretary of state has ordered elections supervisors in at leastfour counties to send to Tallahassee at least36,000 petition forms already deemed to have been signed by real people. Since the Times first reported on this effort, Alachua and Broward counties have confirmed they also received requests from the state.

One 16-year supervisor said the request was unprecedented. The state did not ask for rejected petitions, which have been the basis for past fraud cases.

DeSantis, who signed the abortion ban into law, has organized opposition to the amendment, and his office’s request to supervisors has supporters of the amendment fearful it could be “political interference.”

the “plan” that Donny just, uh, told them about was tariffs — because this dumbfuck still has no idea how tariffs work. he imagines that by slapping tariffs on all imported goods, he’s going to raise a pickeldillionty dollars and everyone in America will have all the money they need to buy all the Trump Steaks they could ever want.

    sadly, no.

a tariff is a tax that is levied on an importer the moment a foreign-made product enters our country. the importer passes that cost onto you, the consumer. not one penny of the tariff is paid by any foreign country.

now, feast your eyes on how the AP papered over that shit.

just a successful businessman giving a ‘major economic speech.’ oh, okay.

Trump has embraced tariffs as he appeals to working-class voters who oppose free-trade deals and the outsourcing of factories and jobs. But in his speech Thursday and his economic plans as a whole, Trump has made a broader — to some, implausible — promise on tariffs: that they can raise trillions of dollars to fund his agenda without those costs being passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices.

nowhere in AP’s reporting does it mention that Donny’s plan is an outright fantasy because that’s not how tariffs work.

the AP notes that “some” find Donny’s plan “implausible” — but they never bother to explain why.

The New York Times’ reporting was no better.

Jeff goes on to rip a whole host of other media, and we learn that what the media is doing now has a technical term, “sanewashing”.

@twbrandt: I’m fine with it too. I doubt if the Cheneys will take up permanent space in the Democratic tent. They and their “#CountryOverParty” allies intend to fight it out with the MAGA radicals once Trump goes down, I think. They’re not ceding their party to the knuckledraggers if they can help.it.

@Chief Oshkosh: I think that is just lighting your money on fire. Go to Dailykos and find Charles GABA’s list of Democratic candidates in districts we need to defend and those we can potentially flip. Fund the low-hanging fruit districts first.

@twbrandt: Cheney will help this year. There are already like-minded Republicans like Geoff Duncan who’ve made the jump and Cheney will help reel in some more. Republicans already have a numbers problem and they can’t afford to lose many of their own.

@RevRick: Last I saw, Mr. Gaba was leaving a couple battleground districts out because he doesn’t approve of the Democratic incumbents. That’s Gaba’s right, but I’ll note it anyway because I don’t think he does.

@SatanicPanic: Well, the neocons at least believed in some heroic vision of eliminating Bad Guys from the earth. In that, they shared a lot of toxic ideas about strength and manliness with the Trumpers.

But the Trumpers have an isolationist streak that the neocons don’t–their allies are the paleocons who were “on our side” during the Bush era, like Pat Buchanan. I always thought the paleocons actually scared me more, though.

    @Fair Economist:

I’m with the people saying that the Cheneys are only on our side because *they* want to be running the Republican show, to eventually put them, or at least their friends, into control of the country under some soft authoritarian system.

So you seriously think the Cheneys are delusional, they are too stupid to see their style of politics has no future in today’s GOP?

I don’t see them as that stupid.
