North Carolina Asian Americans Together (NCAAT)

So excited about this new group!

North Carolina Asian Americans Together is a mouthful, so I will refer to them as NCAAT.  What we will be funding though, is technically NCAAT In Action – the partisan side of the organization.  You will see that there are separate websites for NCAAT and NCAAT In Action, but for simplicity I will refer to them as NCAAT.  (More on that below)

Here’s what’s so exciting about this organization!

BJ Strategic Fundraising Trifecta:  NC is a critical state + Youth Vote + the AAPI Community

Our goal is to raise $25,000 for NCAAT in Action.  They are working hard to find an external match for us!  Their charismatic young director (and founder of the organization) is confident she’ll find one  But time is short and we don’t want to hold off on starting until we know re.for sure.

The NCAAT peeps have secured the $25,000 match for us!  All donations with Angel matches will now be 4x!

We will be helping NCAA expand its outreach to AAPI and BIPOC youth aged 18-25 in 10 target counties on 53 campuses and high schools with the most racially diverse populations.

Fun Facts:

  • North Carolina and its 16 electoral votes are up for grabs.
  • One of the key ways to win in NC is turning out the youth and BIPOC vote
  • All the trends in NC are moving in our direction: the polls, voter enthusiasm.
  • Trump and Mark Robinson (black candidate for governor) are displaying unfitness for office.
  • The NCAAT leadership is young and enthusiastic and full of innovative strategies.
  • Since the inception of NCAAT and NCAAT in Action, the Asian youth turnout has been at record highs and consistently higher than turnout for youth in other racial groups of color.
  • NCAAT is not duplicating the efforts of the North Carolina Black Alliance, the other youth-related North Caroline group we are supporting. Both organizations are part of a coalition that is coordinating member efforts!

NCAAT will use its proven youth tactics to expand our efforts for 2024 to boost all BIPOC youth engagement, civic participation, and voting!!

  • They become a visible presence on campus to educate students on voting rights and the importance of youth voting.
  • Increase engagement by facilitating discussion on AAPI and BIPOC youth issues.
  • Collect Voter Registration cards and developing leads for their youth leadership pipeline.
  • They have on-site “campus ambassadors,” who facilitate discussions on election-related challenges
  • They promote information on candidate accountability.
  • They develop and distribute political education materials.
  • The are focused on Democratic turnout.

We typically try to provide groups with what they need in order to expand their efforts or do things they have wanted to do but don’t have the resources.

In this case, it’s too late in the game for us to underwrite an expansion to other campuses or other unique efforts.

But it’s not too late to help them:

  • put more ambassadors in the field
  • expand their hours
  • focus more on key issues – reproductive rights, climate change, protecting immigrants’ rights, prioritizing a ceasefire in Gaza
  • create more targeted educational materials
  • do more follow up with students

They have a sophisticated strategy of emphasizing three main focus areas:

  1. Supporting and Endorsing Kamala Harris
  2. Downballot Races
  3. Defeat an Anti-Immmigrant Ballot Measure

    @RaflW: Yes, the Republcan candidate for governor in NC is a total nightmare, and displaying it to people who are paying attention.

    But a survey was done, and i think it was fewer than half on the young people surveyed knew anything about him, and the concern is that uneducated voters may think, without knowing any details, “I’ll vote for the black guy running for Republican governor”.

    So it’s super important that NCAAT is helping educate the young pups about the NC governor’s race, as well.  Ditto about the anti-immigrant ballot measure that would be a nightmare.

    @RaflW: We are going big on both North Carolina and Arizona this year, with multiple efforts in both of those states.

    Last cycle, it was Michigan, where we supported Michigan with fundraising 3 oe 4 different ways.

    And look how that turned out!  :-)

    The only disappointment for me in fundraising for the 2024 cycle is that we weren’t able to connect with a Latino organization.

    But excited that we have found partners in the Asian American community and with Youth.  Youth in NC with NC Black Alliance, with The Civics Center, and now with NCAAT.

    “Barrow Boy” is a British term for a street trader, usually selling fruit and veg but possibly other things, from a barrow that would be wheeled round to the trading pitch, usually a street corner.  There was a social connotation here as well, and when the London Stock Exchange opened up to people outside the traditional upper middle classes, the newcomers were referred to as “barrow boys” irrespective of what they’d done.  There’s actually a London pub called the “Barrowboy and Banker”

    Anyway, a long, long time ago I sold fruit and veg from a street corner in Tottenham.  With phone cameras being ubiquitous nowadays it’s hard to remember back to how taking photos was a special occasion.  We’ve got no pictures of what I think was a Victorian era cart that we pulled round from the shed to the corner of Stoneleigh Road and Tottenham High Road, conveniently situated by The Beehive pub.

    That was half a century ago, though my brother is still running a shop in the High Street.  I escaped into a job in computing, which has its own antisocial hours but at least they don’t entail getting up at unearthly hours in the morning to go to market.  After 5 Transatlantic moves I’ve been in Silicon Valley for the last quarter century.

    If it comes up, they may be surprised to find that he runs into a buzz saw since a lot of viewers will be genuinely surprised at Trump’s role in the Afghanistan withdrawal since the media never bothered to say much of anything until we were evacuating out of Kabul airport and they weren’t interested in providing context then.

    In the race for president, North Carolina is a state that is nice but not essential for the Democrat to win. However, it is a state Republicans cannot lose.

    The Electoral College math becomes very tricky for a Republican candidate who cannot hold onto our light-pink to purple state and its now 16 electoral votes — we gained an elector with the last Census due to a population bump. Conversely, a Democrat typically has other routes available to the magic number of 270 electoral votes, even a path that can bypass the South altogether.

    @WaterGirl: Robinson is a great example of how someone can be engagingly likable in person, and yet a monster once the skin-suit is ripped off to reveal the repulsive, dangerous core underneath.  His initial run of tv ads here in NC presented him as an attractive, warm Charles Barkley type personality (whom Robinson physically resembles) who rose from poverty as one of nine children…and seemed designed to disarm concerns that he might be a crazy person with insane views.  Have to admit the ads were effectively well-crafted.

    But sometime about 2-3 weeks ago the GOP PAC adverts have instead turned to focus exclusively in trying to dirty up Stein and portray Stein as soft on crime with murders and crime increasing as he let prisoners out if jail and letting illegal immigrants run rampant with sanctuary cities.
    Not much focus on trying to sell Robinson to NC voters anymore.

    @frosty: In response to the Rolling Rocks part of your comment, I remember that lunch was usually a cheese roll or similar, washed down with a pint or two from The Plough or The Beehive (this being from a time before the pubs worked out that there was money to be made by selling food).  Then a pint or so after closing, before getting the bus home.

    I did stretch things a bit with “barrow boy” because most of the time I’d actually be working in the stall, a place that at least had a roof, with in the earliest incarnation some lift out shutters, later version with roll up shutters.  But “exgreengrocer” didn’t seem so interesting.  The barrow was run partly as a profit making venture, mostly to keep the pitch under family control and not let it go to a rival trader.

    Fun factoid – after I left, one of the regular customers was the mother of David Lammy, current British Foreign Secretary, who would be tagging along when he was a school kid.   One of my brothers got David Lammy, as part of constituency service when he was just a Member of Parliament , to write to the council asking for mitigation for a fine for breaking street trading rules by having the stall displays too far forward on the pavement.

    @exbarrowboy: I wonder if you’ve read Jeffrie Archer’s As the Crow Flies (1991). The hero, Charlie Trumper, is born in 1900 and raised in London’s Whitechapel district. Charlie takes over his grandfather’s market barrow at age 14 and sells fruit vegetables. Then Charlie goes to war, returns, and sets up shop as a green grocer or “costermonger.”

    Charlie has a knack for business, and a decade later his big London store is the talk of the town and a huge financial success (think Harrod’s). The store is named “Trumper’s,” and its logo is a wheelbarrow. Then Charlie traverses more years of triumph, tragedy, and corporate intrigue before he finally hands over the reins of his enterprise to the next generation.

    Charlie doesn’t retire though; he sets up a wheelbarrow in the old market and sells fruit and vrgetables.
