What a moment. Kamala Harris just went to a local business in Pittsburgh where she took the time to greet young people, thank teachers, and talk with voters in this election. Kamala Harris continues doing what Donald Trump can never do. Love her.

As a peace offering, if Harris wins she should implement some of Project 2025. Of course this would be for the Democrats, so for example, the president of the Heritage Foundation would be deported as an undesirable element.

When I saw that video of Kamala Harris at Penzey’s that was also posted by several commenters yesterday, the first thing I thought was how wonderfully genuine Kamala Harris is. She’s the real deal and can interact with real people.
Then I thought, OMG, if Trump hugged someone, anyone, it would only look and feel creepy. But we don’t have to ever worry about that because in his mind, anyone in his vicinity are only there to love and adore him. They have no other purpose to him.
Such a contrast.

The election is going to turn on the thing that even the best polls don’t know how to model anymore – turnout driven by enthusiasm. Harris is roaring, and Trump’s side seems tepid. Even his most fervent groupies seem to be going through the motions. They were frothing at the mouth in 2020 to destroy liberals once and for all.
GOTV is involved in this, but I honestly have no data on if that’s actually getting done on the GOP side, since it’s been outsourced. There is nothing stopping those organizations from doing it and doing it well, but I’ve heard nothing and I’m not sure I would hear anything.
TBone
@Gin & Tonic: I somehow missed that whole warthog thing 😆 but I will voluntarily watch Donvict occasionally (I watched part of his recent “town hall” with Hannity). This 10 minutes of unedited video from the Penzey’s visit popped up in my YouTube feed yesterday and I found it utterly charming. In the last few seconds she’s asked about the Cheney endorsement and goes into a more official mode, but before that she’s just doing what the Republicans could never do, interacting human to human.
It includes the moment where she’s just acting like a shopper, talking over spice mixes with the sales staff.

@Frankensteinbeck: Republican/MAGA enthusiasm seems to be near zero in my red state (Indiana). You would hardly know an election is happening here. A few signs around me for a school board candidate (the nutters are running 3, making it known in what is supposed to be a nonpartisan election).
The Thin Black Duke
@Frankensteinbeck: Trump is the last season of an once-popular reality-TV-show that’s gone stale. However, as was always the case, whether it gets renewed for another season depends on the viewers. I think it’s important to remember that if Trump “wins” (translation: steals) the presidency again, The Trump Show will be the only sitcom being broadcast in the country.

It would be nice if these outings where they talk to whomever happens to be there got more press attention. Instead, I had to hear on NPR a couple of days ago that “Harris will do a rare interview” with Univision.
Looks like the media found their emails-level story, and it won’t matter how many interviews she does at this point.

I was a little disappointed that Harris didn’t get any Outrage of Love on her Penzey’s trip. That stuff is very tasty and packs a punch, and would have been something for people to talk about.

Well that was back when the US AG and the entire DOJ was egging them on too. Whatever you think about TCF dodging justice and the Biden/Garland DOJ handling J6, 1600+ of them have been charged and sentenced. IMO it was more important to show the MAGAts and Proud Boys that TCF was using them and now they have to pay the price of fucking around. I’m furious about the SCOTUS playing god but the MAGAts are pissed that they got conned and are finally figuring out that the short fingered vulgarian only cares about how often he can pick their pockets.

I love Penzeys. I have one of their “Love people. Cook them tasty food.” stickers on my car. My absolute favorite in the Trinidad. A splash of that on almost any vegetable really brightens it up. I see a lot of evidence of incompetence in the R campaign, and of the incoherence of TCFG, and so on, and a lot of evidence of competence and enthusiasm among the Democrats. And that general rule applies to pretty much any area of policy. Whatever differences there might be between Harris and Biden, or among Democrats in general, it’s silly to spend much time taling about those differences because they’re tiny compared to the enormous chasm between what Harris’ policies would be like, and what Trump would do.
How the media continues to navigate around that huge elephant in the room is beyond me. Just like how they continue to ignore his obvious mental deterioration is beyond me, and how you’d be nuts to want someone like him running the country even if he was for everything you’re for, and against everything you’re against.

Lately I’ve been leaving the Trump mailers in the post office after tearing off my name/address and making derogatory comments with the sharpie I now take with me when I pick up my mail.

@oldgold: Haven’t they already said that the election has no bearing on their decision on rates? I’m pretty sure I heard that from either Powell or one of the other Fed Governors.
My general feeling from the get-go, and nothing much has changed it since, is that inflation was transitory because of the pandemic disruptions. The Fed was pushing on a string to try to control inflation via interest rates. Inflation was going to come down when the pandemic was under control, when supply chains were closer to normal, when the labor market readjusted. It took longer than I thought, but I still think that’s what happened.
But, and it’s a big but, interest rates have a big effect on housing costs and a big effect on who succeeds in buying homes. Jacking up interest rates means that those who can pay cash have a huge advantage over normal folks who have to scrape to afford a down-payment and giant monthly payments. And they can drive up housing prices by bidding against other “investors”. Which in turn drives up rents. Increased interest rates can drive down demand by normal people, but it distorts who owns the housing stock and have big impacts later. Plus, when rates change quickly, it means that people who need to move from a home with a 3% mortgage cannot afford to find another place if they would then need a 7% mortgage. So, it slows turnover. All of these things are disruptions to housing that have real costs.
That said, inflation expectations drive inflation, and if everyone thinks that inflation will come down if the Fed raises rates and only if the Fed raises rates, then that’s what has to be done. Even if, objectively, it makes little sense. :-/
And yet another big but, interest rates being at ~ 0% on savings for years is yet another distortion. Rates needed to rise eventually. And getting people used to 10 year Treasuries at 3-5% again is not a bad thing – in the long term.
This period is yet another example that there’s too much money floating around out there doing unproductive things. The Fed playing with interest rates only has isolated impacts on most of the economy (credit card rates are 10-30% and not much affected by the Fed Funds rate (except as an excuse)). Housing is the outlier, and that has ripple effects and real impacts on real people’s budgets.
We need to raise taxes on the speculators, the MotUs, eliminate or vastly increase regulation of stock buy-backs, punish people who have empty housing “investment” properties, and get that excess money out of the hands of people who aren’t doing anything productive with it. And do productive things with it.
I wouldn’t be surprised by a 0.5% cut at the next Fed meeting, but we’ll see.
My $0.02.
Cheers,
Scott.

One guy in a giant lifted truck pulled up next to us and stopped. He rolled down his window and … bought a Harris sign. One lady walked up and said at first she wasn’t sure if it was a tRump booth but she was happy that “You’re my people.” We brought disco music and danced most of the time, but it was 110 degrees all afternoon. Another truck pulled up and a guy brought us some water, spontaneous gesture of good will. Josh and TPM’s piece on mailers is what we here locally discovered during last year’s municipal election. Ten of us filed a campaign complaint, did some discovery only to learn that when these things are done out of state (as this was), there’s nothing we could do about it. It’s a wonderful loophole in the local election law.
But it parallels what dark money/outsourcing seems to think “GOTV” means: mailers and little else.
It’s as if the GQP’s stragety will be a combination of mailers and suppression. Nobody, not even stenographers at the Wa(com)Post and FTFNYT seem to think the outsourcing approach will work calling it an enormous “gamble”.

Wait, do the revenues from the tax on Social Security benefits go into the Social Security trust fund? I thought they were just part of the regular income tax system.

That’s nice. But I wish politicians would learn to speak more like normal people. That is frankly the difference between Tim Walz who is a schoolteacher and knows how to explain things and speak simply. Versus Vindman who is career military and Washington bureaucrat and used to speaking in bureaucratic code.
What does “vote to codify Roe” even mean? Every year there are various votes in Congress that would create federal abortion rights. They fail because Democrats don’t have a filibuster proof majority. But they are votes. Is all we are asking is that they take yet one more losing vote?
A much better response would be to explain in plain language: “This is how Republicans are taking away your rights” and then explain: “This is how we as Democrats are fighting back, and this is what we stand for”
I have nothing against Vindman. I’m sure he will be a good Congressman. I’m just pointing out what is an all-too-common tendency of Democrats to mouth things in bureaucratic code rather than plain language. Talking about “codifying Roe” will make people who are already Democratic loyalists happy. But I doubt it is going to resonate with very many young undecided voters who aren’t particularly engaged.
