Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

I really should read my own blog.

Republicans do not trust women.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

We still have time to mess this up!

You cannot shame the shameless.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

In after Baud. Damn.

Funniest, Dummest, Most Pathetic, Best, Worst, Most Memorable Lines in the Debate (and Taylor Swift Endorsed Kamala!)

I laughed out loud when the Tramp said: ” Joe Biden hates you.”

*****

Also, Taylor Swift (!)

Full statement.

Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.

Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.

I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.

With love and hope,

Taylor Swift

Why is Trump so obsessed with saying Biden hates Harris?

It was going around the wingnut-sphere (and still is; I saw it in a reply just days ago) and TCFG posted about it.

Basically, they tried to will into being the idea that Biden was “pushed out” involuntarily, sometimes by Harris, sometimes by Obama (the secret master controlling everything) or others, and he hates them first taking what was rightfully his. This is the basis for TCFG’s bizarro post that Biden was going to storm into the stage at the convention and take the nomination back somehow.

I suspect it’s partly TCFG can’t imagine selflessly giving up anything, and is sure everyone else is really like him, and partly he spins bizarre fantasies because he thinks it’s unfair he’s doesn’t get to run against Biden.

VP Harris did a magnificent job tonight in the debate.  Probably the best debate performance against Trump we’ve ever seen.

Strangest moment and maybe best but missed opportunity was the part about Jan 6th.

    A) Trump couldn’t come up with a single regret from that day.
    B) Trump wouldn’t tell what he was doing in the missing 2 hours
    C)  Trump claimed he didn’t organize the rally, he just showed up and gave a speech so then who was bossing him around that day?
    D)  Claims he offered Nancy Pelosi, if I remember correctly 10,000 National Guard for security, for a rally of his own supporters that he called to Washington.  If the really wasn’t supposed to be violent, why did he need the National Guard, and if he was worried about violence, why did he have the rally at all?

Seriously, 10,000 National Guard Troops spaced at 3 feet apart, 5 feet on center, would be a line of soldiers 6 to 7 miles long.

My prediction of the media reaction is they’re all going to say “both sides claim victory” and then just move on.  There will be no examination of Trump’s absurdities, still no explanation to voters about how tariffs  work, still no explanation that there is no such thing as “post-birth abortion.”

The one place in the abortion discussion that made me cringe was when Trump accused Harris of being in favor of abortions in the sixth, seventh and eighth months and her responding that she’s not.  That is insane.  There are situations where abortions in those months are necessary.

As well as Harris did, I am disappointed that she was not prepared with specific responses to his most common bullshit.  Like Trump’s claim that inflation during the Biden administration was the worst the country’s ever seen.  I’m sorry, Donald, I’m pretty sure you were not only alive during the 1970s but an adult, because you weren’t just investigated for housing discrimination but you pled no contest, paid a fine, and signed an agreement that you would stop your illegal practices.

You seem to imply that being “in favor” of abortions means someone wants all pregnancies to be aborted. No. It means we want pregnancies that are not wanted to be able to be aborted if that’s what the pregnant person chooses. Don’t do their work for them, please.

    Chet Murthy

    September 11, 2024 at 1:19 am

@Jay: Jay, @KatKapCC: does have a point.  We went thru many years in the US of using that “safe, legal, and rare” formulation, and what too many people took away from it was “eew, abortion, ick”.  And so, at some point in the last 10yr or so, abortion rights activists and -many- women bloggers started celebrating abortion, and that has only accelerated since Dobbs.  You can see a real sea change in the way women writers talk about their abortions: there are lots of essays about how it wasn’t a “fraught” decision at all, how it was the obvious thing, how it was great and their lives were so much better because of it, how happy they are that they got their abortion, and how they had no second thoughts whatsoever.

In short, “what ‘ew’ ?  I’d do it again!”  And I think that, given that we do indeed have so many Forced Birther Pigs, that is the only formulation that can work in the US as currently constituted.  I think that the complexity of having that argument out before an audience that still contains a lot of “eew abortion” types, is why VP Harris stuck with “I will restore the protections of Roe v. Wade”.  It avoids having a complicated explanation of what she’s proposing, while making it clear to any woman who cares that she’s in their corner and will restore their rights.

Wade” isn’t, and also has the advantage that because it is not -detailed- as to exactly what regime is being reinstated, it forces TCFG to expend precious time explaining it (which of course he can’t do, b/c he doesn’t know and never cared to learn).  And your target audience already believes that Roe v. Wade was an acceptable standard, so you don’t have to convince them.

The standard PP response is that “abortions should be safe, legal and rare”.

No one on the pro-choice side uses this phrase anymore. It has been out of favor for many years. And yes, some of us are “in favor” of abortions when they are needed or wanted. You seem to imply that being “in favor” of abortions means someone wants all pregnancies to be aborted. No. It means we want pregnancies that are not wanted to be able to be aborted if that’s what the pregnant person chooses

Clinton meant that the conditions that lead to unwanted or dangerous pregnancies need to be reduced. IE, birth control education, access to prenatal care for all expectant mothers, etc. He wasn’t denigrating abortion.

@TheMightyTrowel: I’d like for abortions to be rarely needed – because it’s simpler for free pregnant person to not need to make arrangements for the abortion and to not be pregnant* if they don’t want to be. Easy access (free access!) to birth control with the ACA has been a game changer. I still remember the shock of some women when their oral contraceptives at my Walgreens went from $25 to $0. (I credited Obamacare)

Access to long term family planning strategies should also be more accessible. You want a hysterectomy, tubal ligation, vasectomy? No need to wait until you have X number of children. No need to ask a spouse about their opinion. Everyone should have the bodily autonomy to make that choice.

Anyhow, while I am all in on the bodily autonomy train, I think it is still good to make the need for abortion as low as we can.

    * – abortion due to pregnancy complications often can’t be predicted or prevented, so there will always be a need, no matter what we do to arrange birth control access and stop rape/incest/abuse.

She didn’t want that, and her husband didn’t want that” and then explicitly saying he was taking an IMMORAL position.  Totally turned the tables on the Christian Nationalists who have always tried to claim the moral high ground on this issue.

It’s important for Democrats to talk about the immorality of so may of the Republicans’ policies; people vote on emotions and affinity, not logical policy prescriptions (although Democrats win there too).

DeWine realizes that means they’re all paying taxes, right, including property taxes and state taxes for schools? Can he add and subtract?  They’re a NET GAIN.

It’s in the part of Ohio prosecutors call “the meth belt” – huge drug problems and young white men who won’t work. That’s why local employers were desperate for reliable employees and have welcomed Haitians. They interviewed one last night who has hired 30 and said he would “gladly” take 30 more. There’s a group in south Toledo too. Joe Biden didn’t “send” them there – they moved there the same way all human beings move, because of connections to other people.

Again- the city had 80k residents and went down to 60k. If 20k Haitians moved there they’re up to the population they had a decade ago. It isn’t even a net gain of people.

@Soprano2: “They thought it was important for people to know that there is no state that allows infanticide, and that there are no credible reports of immigrants eating people’s pets.”

Ten years ago we’d have dismissed as dystopian fantasy the idea that someone would have to assure people about either of those things.

    @Ken:

And the stature gap in terms of physical size was also notable, especially with Harris having a shorter podium. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you should watch the debate with the sound off, and by that measure it was much closer than with the sound on.

Was Nate Silverman always Zoolander in disguise?

@Starfish: I agree. But we need to win first. Roe is a term that both A) reminds people of what worked well (*mostly) for many years, and B) reminds people of the crazy pants opinions in the other side.

    Win votes, then pass legislation.

@Soprano2:  And they fact checked him. Again, shocking for a MSM outlet.

I laughed out loud when the Tramp said: ” Joe Biden hates you.”

That’s trump projecting his hatred of JD Vance onto Biden-Harris. he has to demean Harris somehow so he wants everyone thinking that Harris is disliked by her own mentor/boss.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques: So Nate thinks Trump won the debate because he’s taller?

@Jay: No idea what you mean about getting into the mud. But for one thing, this is US politics, not Canadian. For another, I’ve been an abortion rights activist for decades and worked as a clinic escort for many years, so I think I know what I’m talking about. Shove your self-important snottiness.

@catclub: Have you been to that section of Minneapolis recently?

(I’ve been reluctant to head up that way, but I would imagine that significant rehabbing has been done by now.)

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): I wouldn’t give him another one. He can only go up. Every sentient voter should know who TFG is by now.

    @Jinchi: Well that’s a relief. I was worried there for a bit. <joke>
