kamala is like HEY DONALD IM LAYING A TRAP YOU PROBABLY SHOULDNT WALK INTO IT YOU BETTER NOT and he walks RIGHT IN

My opinion, and more importantly that of a lot of more influential watchers, is that Vice-President Harris had a brilliant evening. And that TFG… did not.
A Tbogg unit has been surmounted, there’s lots of social media to dredge for treasure, but it’s been a busy evening and I’ve still got the weekly Covid / H5N1 recap to work on.
So… Talk amongst yourselves, and I’ll see y’all in a few hours!
From the Guardian liveblog:
Gabrielle Canon
Tuesday night’s debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris could have been a mess of layered talking, unchallenged claims, or wild veers off-topic.Instead, ABC’s moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis, kept the candidates on point.
Muir and Davis took on the first matchup between the two virtually tied presidential candidates, seeking to “enforce timing agreements and ensure a civilized discussion,” according debate rules from ABC that took weeks to negotiate, and it was no easy task.
The two effectively rerouted discussions back to the questions they asked, on key topics including the economy, immigration, abortion rights, and the peaceful transfer of power, and made important clarifying fact-check statements when they were warranted.
When Trump made the outlandish claim that Democrats supported “the execution” of babies after they were born and accused Tim Walz, Harris’s vice-presidential pick, of supporting abortions in the ninth month, Davis laid out the facts: “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it is born,” Davis told viewers.
Muir also pushed Trump on his connection to the 6 January attack on the capitol, and his belief that he won the election, despite all evidence to the contrary.

I have just turned off NBC–to the surprise, I am sure, of no one here–since they’ve gone to the “spin room” and are more interested in reporting on what each of the campaigns SAY happened than on what an expert (like, oh, I don’t know, maybe Michael Beschloss or a professional debate coach or a professor of rhetoric with a specialization in political rhetoric) has to say.

Was nervous as i thought MVP was nervous for the first coupla minutes, then she appeared (to me) to settle down a bit and found her groove. This is not in any way shade, any person on that stage at that moment would be nervous if they are human.
Trump, well, he looks like he just saw a yard sign for the “Oompa-Loompa-Americans for Kamala” group.
DID appreciate (at the very least) the moderator correcting that in NO STATE is it legal to kill a baby after birth. Would have been better had she given the specific crime of Infanticide, but maybe that was too much to expect. Still, was glad to see that at least got corrected. Would have been happier if they would have stopped for a brief refresher on tariffs and how they work. Wouldn’t have taken long and that (at least) could have been addressed for a (whole bunch) of seemingly unaware voters…

MVP crushed him. Period.
CFDT sounded like a lunatic, and repeated a handful of phrases a dozen times (“these people”, “border”, “Russia”, “China”) just to tickle the lizard brains of his fascist faithful.
But to the extent there were any “Gee, I don’t know who to vote for” voters out there, not a single damn one of them watched this and will find themselves wanting to vote for CFDT in 2024.
Not one.
The only people who are going to vote for CFDT in 2024 are those who were always going to do it.

The amazing thing to me was that the Harris campaign made it clear what they would do, and they did it. While Trump campaign made no changes or was even worse than in the first debate being combative and insulting.

I thought she flat cleaned his fucking clock. I was shaking in my boots at the start too, because she seemed really nervous for maybe a minute. Luckily the unimaginably ridiculous things Trump says probably have the effect of imagining the audience in their underwear. I think that will play. Good work Kamala!

Chet Murthy
@Elizabelle: I noticed over and over, that she would skip answering substantive but nitpicking questions/points. At first, it seemed a problem, but over time I saw that this was part of a plan (I think). She’s trying not to get dragged into details, even when she can win on those details, if they don’t contribute to her topline message.
I think that’s why she didn’t (for instance) respond to TCFG’s accusation that she was sent to -negotiate- to prevent the war. She wasn’t: she was sent to prepare the alliance for war’s arrival, which is what she did (and what she said she did). What’s the point of rebutting a useless and irrelevant point? It’ll only waste time that she could spend on prosecuting her case.
And this is something I admit I was impressed by: she really did understand that this was about prosecuting a case, about convincing a jury, and NOT about winning on points.

@Betty Cracker: there is always more you can do to correct Trump in real-time, but his sheer volume of fuckery would mean that time-wise, the debate would have been derailed into oblivion.
This is why he can stall out court cases so much, because the legal system is obligated to answer all the fuckery he can get up to. A media entity has to pick and choose what to talk about and what to let go for the moment.
The big problem I’ve had with the legacy media is the fact they never circle around to deal with the shit they ‘let go’. Among other things yes, but that’s a big one for me this year.

@SW: that was the best debate I’ve ever seen. Kampala Harris gave a master class. I made the mistake of listening briefly to a pack of undecideds who remained undecided right after. And then decided to shut off the tv and spare myself and savor the contact high I’ve currently got. The high high, I mean.
Bupalos
I don’t do ‘politicians as hero’ and I have real problems with the way the campaign has decided complete capitulation and then some is the way to go on what is probably the most important policy issue of our times, fossil fuel extraction and use.
But I feel really deep gratitude to Kamala Harris for… just who she is, what she’s done with her life, and how she has risen to the occasion in a time of deep need for… really everyone on the planet. I don’t think the stakes have ever been higher or the situation weirder… and that lady is working hard and killing it.

@Eolirin: Are you saying the Taylor Swift endorsement is bad news somehow?

Boy…those debate preps with Tulsi Gubbard suuuuurree did come in handy huh.
To all those folks using Tulsi to ding MVP Harris based on a debate years ago…
How that work out for ya?
Jackie
I watched time delayed, but just want to say while the ABC monitors did a hell of a lot better job than CNN, they still let Trump jump in and rebut WAY MORE than Harris was allowed to. I resent TCFG was given WAY MORE speaking time than Harris was given.
On the other hand, allowing Trump to jump in for the last word, worked against him.
BUT, Harris should have been given the same opportunity to rebut. Instead, the moderators moved onto the next subject.
That pissed me off. But, in-spite of that, Kamala Harris ate his lunch and dinner.
I’m looking forward to watching Morning Joe and other programs in the morning! I’ll even take a peek at Faux 😁

@Mai Naem mobile:
Taylor Swift just endorsed Kamala. TFG is really going to lose it.
You can almost predict the middle-of-the-night Truth Social rant. “Tailor Grift, one of the most Talentless Hacks in the history of our Beloved Nation, who nobody would have even heard of if she hadn’t started sleeping with a football star just in time for the Super Bowl (she knows NOTHING about football!), immediately after the Debate, which I clearly won, tonight, has ‘Endorsed’ Commie Comrade Kamala, which will backfire very powerfully on Comrade because Tailor calls herself a ‘Childless Cat Lady’ even though everyone who, fraudulently and traitorously, votes for Ka MAH La, eats pet cats and dogs.”

@Mousebumples: People forget already, but a factor in Taylor Swift’s thinking is that she’s already had to cancel foreign concerts because of terrorist threats. Because of her following, I think she feels obligated to consider the danger to her own fans if she antagonizes the MAGA chuds too much.

Shallow comment, but the strangest thing about the debate is that Trump’s hair looked — almost normal. It appeared to be a light brown and not so elevated. It usually looks like brass cotton candy. New rug?
Leto
@Citizen Alan: but she’s also creating another permission structure for her red state fans to vote blue. Her fan base is ginormous and crosses over both ways. This is another way to peel off more voters.
Leto
@JoyceH: I noticed that as well. It looked like his cotton candy was trimmed a bit. Sister Golden Bear also had an expert analysis of why his makeup was so shitty.

What I don’t get is how a guy who only cares about himself and never has had a pet — even his horrible parents probably knew he’d just torture the poor thing — suddenly is concerned about other people’s cats and dogs and even ducks.

shitforbrains is a 78 yr old deranged male that thinks his shit (from both ends….) doesn’t stink. Now I’ve never been in his vicinity – (thankfully!!!) but from all the evidence it reeks from the bottom of the ocean to the moon – and back – there is a reason I call him SFB. My point is that he is not all that smart, he’s aging out and he continues to put himself into positions that he can’t handle. I know I don’t have to say it here but he should not be within 1000 miles of power and it would be better for us if he wasn’t within 10,000 miles of the United States. Which I believe means that he needs to be shot to the moon (However I wouldn’t want to do that to the moon) maybe Jupiter would be better.
Gretchen
So Harris said his rallies are boring and people leave early. Wharton Econ professors like her plan better than his. His daddy left him $400 million and he lost it all in multiple bankruptcies. Long history of racism back to losing the lawsuits over discrimination in his apartments. World leaders laughing at him. Former aides saying he’s unfit. He had one narcissistic injury after another tonight, and reacted to every one.
dm
@Bupalos: Sadly, fracking is a big issue in Pennsylvania, and a lot of people see it as a possible source of cash in rural parts of the state that have seen the economic mainstays of coal and manufacturing wither for over half a century.
So, thank the electoral college.
Gretchen
@tokyokie: they don’t seem to know that ducks migrate south in the fall. That might be why there are fewer ducks now than in July, not that the migrants are eating them all. Although we have so many obnoxious messy geese I’m not sure people would object too much to a little illicit hunting.

Back before I left the bad place, it was scary how many wingers had “dog lover” type things in their bios.
Chet Murthy
@RaflW: This is a perceptive comment. She was a litigator, not just a lawyer. That seems to have mattered.
ETA: OTOH Hillary was also a litigator early on. Then again, she won her debates with TCFG, which didn’t matter, b/c the nation wasn’t prepared for a woman to wipe the floor with a man. Ah, well.
frosty
@RaflW: Yes, that’s interesting isn’t it? Kind of like law school is just messing around and not much use until you get in front of a jury.
Even Vinnie Gambino figured it out! (with a bit of help from Mona Lisa Vito). I love that courtroom scene: “The defense is wrong! There’s no way these tire marks were made by a ’63 Buick Skylark.”

@Chet Murthy: The nation was prepared. Clinton won the popular vote after all, let’s not forget. She lost a minor percentage of the popular vote in some swing states.

shitforbrains has gone bye bye. That lump inside his head has given up the battle with his ego. It’s not that it’s better than his brain it’s that he actually listens to his EGO and not his brain, although in his case that may be irrelevant.
He has aged out and because of his mental acuity now being about the level of 2 yr old, will never get better. Between his EGO and his brain, EGO wins every time. And his EGO is more deranged and disillusioned than his brain, and of course that brain is not all that and a stick of gum.

@Another Scott:
My issue with “business men” is that they actually specialize in one segment of some business rather than looking at the big picture often enough. (I know this because I owned a business that required a lot of daily attention to work and you have to put the time that the business requires or you will lose. You can relax and think or do other things but if you do that too much – you will lose)

@Dangerman:
One of the MSNBC talking heads (can’t remember which one) pointed out, using a still image from that moment, that Trump’s physical posture there was “Aaaauuuugh scary black lady how do I get out of here?”
I missed that myself but it’s true. What I did catch was how Trump kept getting all sweaty on his upper lip. He looked spooked!

@Mai Naem mobile:
I think it’s just his bad living (no exercise, poor diet, etc., plus—significantly—his Adderall abuse) catching up to him.
His father went senile (Alzheimer’s) in his late 80s (died at age 93, but Mary Trump says he was exhibiting signs maybe 4 or 5 years earlier), but Fred Trump doesn’t seem to have made some of the same bad lifestyle choices DJT indulged. Adderall abuse is known to cause a lot of issues. Here’s a list cut-and-pasted from the Betty Ford clinic:
