Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

No one could have predicted…

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

All hail the time of the bunny!

In after Baud. Damn.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Speaking of the wealthy and talented Ms. Swift…

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

FacebookTweetEmail

This probably came up in a thread I missed about the Taylor Swift endorsement, but GROSS: (Source: Rolling Stone)

[O]ne major Trump supporter, the always-thirsty Elon Musk, thought he could weave viral magic by responding to her with an offer of insemination. “Fine Taylor,” Musk posted on X, the website he owns that continues to smolder in the ruins of Twitter, “you win … I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.”

Good gravy, what a slimy creep! Also, does Musk realize Swift’s boyfriend is a rather large fellow?

Swift can take care of herself, but it would be immensely satisfying if Mr. Kelce publicly punched the frog-faced fuck-stick Musk into the sun.

Musk is a rapey misogynst creep, and that’s exactly what you get when you vote for Trump.

For 50% of the men, that’s an attraction. For 97% of the women, that’s a big red flag.

We need to wave that flag high, so it is seen by every woman in the country.  Targeting Taylor, the world’s biggest celebrity, will certainly bring it to the attention of many more women who might have missed it otherwise.

I think the best response to this is the one Swift already did: Someone searched Twitter, and while he has tried to post to her, she has never once replied to him, mentioned him, or recognized that he exists.

    1/6 The Graphic Novel

The comic’s creators plan to send the book to every public high school and library in the state in the lead-up to the November election. Copies will be mailed this week, along with a teaching guide. The authors also plan to host online events “to energize young Pennsylvanians about what they can do to fight for our democracy” in the coming months. The Kettering Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank, is funding the effort.

So there is much (deserved talk) of the “toxic masculinity” problem, but I swear they’re regressing before our eyes.

That comment of Musk’s isn’t so much masculinity of ANY kind as, I dunno, creepy juvenile nastiness.  Like, WAY pre-adult.  And yes it’s entirely plausible that the latter precedes the former in (what passes for) their emotional development, but they really seem on a determined march toward toddlerhood.  And then there’s the orange guy …

If we’re hurtling toward the long-predestined Final Stage of reptilian Republicanism, will it turn out to be not a horrific spasm of violence but … a fetal curl?  Immobile, whimpering, thumb-sucking, and utterly impotent?

I don’t know if there has ever been such a thing as a “normal budget process”. As a former Federal employee there were plenty of continuing resolutions going back at least to the 70s. I think there was at least one year where the entire fiscal year was a continuing resolution. It is true that this whole process didn’t become highly partisan and weaponized until Gingrich in the 90s, but that doesn’t mean everything was smooth and uncomplicated before then.

In the “Wars and Rumors of War” department, from Istanbul-based reporter Levent Kemal:

    A dangerous development:.

Ethiopian troops have seized control of key airports in Somalia’s Gedo region, including Luq, Dolow and Bardere in an attempt to prevent the possible airlifting of Egyptian troops to the area.

Kemal links to an article by somaliaguardian.com that said these airports are vital because Al Shabab insurgents control the roads in the area. The idea was to use Egyptian soldiers to free up Somalian troops.

Egypt is siding the Somalian government in its diplomatic conflict with Ethiopa and breakaway Somaliland, which lies a few hundred miles to the north of the Gedo region. Somaliland has agreed to give Ethiopia a land corridor with a port and military base on the Gulf of Aden (Ethiopia has been landlocked since Eritrea broke away). Somalia’s government claims this is a violation of their country’s sovereignity.

There is also an “ongoing dispute over a hydroelectric dam being built [by Ethiopia] on the Nile River’s main tributary.” The dam would impact Egypt’s water supply.

Oh, so Vance has come out for a more equal distribution of the nation’s wealth?🙄 That would enrich our prosperity relative to the rest of the developed world.  I think by PPP (US$, US= 1)Norway is top-ranked at approx 8.  There are of course multiple definitions of prosperity.

The pathetic thing about these conservaturd capitalism-lovers is that they ACT and LEGISLATE as if capitalism is a zero-sum game, and that is the exact opposite of what it’s supposed to be about.  One would be inclined to think they’re just liars…

I’m across the river in Camas but teach in Vancouver where there are even more Ukrainian and Russian immigrants.  I have tons of their kids in my classes.  Yes, they older generation is mostly conservative because they were fleeing the USSR and communism.  It is the same reason why so many older Vietnamese immigrants are conservative.

Recent public expressions of masculinity by men like Tim Walz or Pete Buttigieg have garnered a lot of attention in recent weeks. In online spaces, I have read many posts about how their behaviours, life actions, words, and values are models of positive or “tonic” masculinity. Many women have pointed out that these expressions are good models of masculinity in a cultural moment when it feels that these models are sparse.

    @CaseyL:

As for Musk… it is a constant shock to remember that 10 years ago he was considered eccentric but also a kind of hero for making EVs cool and affordable (with the Tesla Model S).   It’s a same he didn’t drop dead back then, before revealing his entire ass to the world and destroying every brand associated with him.

A while ago, Abigail at LGM had a post about the whole cliché of the billionaire-inventor-genius-techno-prophet, how hard Musk tried to lean into the stereotype, and how much our culture reveres them (from fictional heroes like Tony Stark and Reed Richards to real characters with reputations blown way out of proportion like Thomas Edison and Howard Hughes).

It’s when I realized I must have watched too many James Bond movies at an impressionable young age.  To me, that archetype has always come off as sinister, not inspiring.  To be fair, all billionaires come off that way, but not all of them give off that sort of megalomaniacal god-complex vibe.  And Silicon Valley especially seems to be lousy with them.

There is also no small population of women in this country to seek to marry rich men.  Even today in 2024.  And so they favor policies that are likely to make “their” men even richer and more powerful.

It isn’t so much about keeping other women down as it is propping their men up.

I just had an email exchange with one of the candidates, Nick Jacobson, who’s running in a PA district smack in the middle of the state, far from Philly or Pittsburgh. He, like the others, are working hard to get young voters out.

@Geminid:I’m curious: How’s it looking for Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez in her rematch with knuckle-dragging Joe Kent

It has been a surprisingly quiet campaign so far.  As the incumbent Marie Perez (how she goes by now) is doing all the right stuff.  She is everywhere in the district making news as a Congresswoman talking to loggers, farmers, fishermen, and every other blue collar and union type in all the small towns north of Vancouver.  And she has a really good social media presence constantly pointing that out.  She is really fabulous and a great fit for this district.

Her opponent is the same MAGA idiot who mostly seems to be phoning it in and expecting a different result this time around.  Still the same MAGA election denial bullshit.  I don’t think he is the right kind of GOPer to beat her.

But this district still leans red.  It is mathematically the reddest district in the country held by a Democrat outside of Alaska.  So she is basically a little bit like John Tester, trying to win in places where Trump is still popular.  Although this district will continue to become more blue over time because most of the growth is in the Portland suburbs part of the district, not the rural areas.

It will be a nail biter just like the national election.  But I am optimistic.  I have no idea what local polling is showing.

Perez and some on defense in the Oregon 5th CD across the Columbia River. The Republican freshman there, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, has a strong Democratic challenger in State Rep. Janelle Bynum.

The two districts are in a way mirror images of each other. The Oregon 5th was represented by Blue Dog Curt “Fu$king” Schrader until.he lost his primary in 2022, and then Chavez-DeRemer eked out a narrow win. The Washington district Rep. Perez represents was held by Impeacher Jaime Herrera Butler, but she came in 3rd in the jungle primary and Perez squeaked by Joe Kent in November.

So (my understanding goes) Zevon would have to license a new Lara Trump single, but wouldn’t have to directly license the Ronstadt single for performance.

I have no idea if Zevon could pull Ronstadt’s license for the song, to keep her from allowing it to be played at a TCFG rally, but, geez, Zeev, isn’t this *just* the circumstances for which the song was written? “Well I ha-aad the whole shebang – four years president. We can say it to white women who vote for Democrats but they already vote for Democrats so it isn’t relevant to them either.

OT but I had the misfortune to actually…bless me…skim through George Will’s latest in the Post today.

(It was titled, “Post-debate, the optimum 2024 political outcome comes into view” and I wanted to see if I guessed right: that he’d be good with Harris winning and the GOP taking the Senate.)

Well, I was technically right, but holy cow does the man have issues.

He’s incredibly insulting to Harris the whole way through. “synthetic”, “no more agency than an iron filling drawn to a magnet”, a “one-note” campaigner.

And he is way, waaaaay delusional: somehow the perfect mix of a ‘feckless, far-left’ president duking it out with a now suddenly sane GOP (especially in the Senate) is going to cause voters to…crave the GOP and usher in a resurgence of “traditional conservatism” in 2028.  Um, George, when what you want to happen lines up perfectly with your predictions, you need to double-check that shit.

(“Mr. Will, if I could just ask, sir: what happens to trump between 2024 and 2028 if he loses?  Does he go away quietly?  And issue no instructions to his followers, who by now constitute a majority of the House GOP and the GOP voter base?  Just turns the party back over to…well, to you, sir…and happens on his merry way to jail?

Or…or, you fucking dipshit…does he perhaps re-file to run again on Nov 6th, 2024?  Or at the latest, on Jan 21st, 2025?  Immunity, and all that…sir”)

The best part (and by that, I mean the dumbest) is the end:

The good news about bad presidencies is that Americans’ unhealthy expectations for presidents – as visionaries, prophets, economic savants, society’s healers and political pastors – might collapse under the weight of childish hopes.  A nation that entrusts the presidency to Harris after consigning it to trump and then Joe Biden might lower its expectations for that office, making them commensurate with the capacities of recent occupants.

Got that folks?  Trump-Biden-Harris: all equally bad.  Stupid voters!

    And then there’s this…

Americans who say they hate politics actually hunger for it – for the normal give-and-take of bargaining.  They are embarrassed by trump’s infantile comportment*, and especially his insistence that the America they love is ‘a failing nation’ “

*ok, he got that part right – we are definitely embarrassed by trump!  ;)

I might give him partial credit on the ‘bargaining’ thing if by that, he means two parties working together to cut bargains that actually get problems solved.  But if he meant that sincerely, he’d just note that there’s one party trying to solve problems…and another that’s two weeks away from once again holding our entire government hostage.

It’d be more accurate to say that a majority of Americans just crave living under unhindered Democratic rule.  ;)

FIRST ON FOX – The Democratic National Committee, on Thursday, plans to troll former President Trump, over his alleged preoccupation with the size of the crowds at his rallies and those of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Fox News has learned that the DNC will launch a video of Harris baiting Trump over crowd sizes, from Tuesday’s first and potentially only presidential debate between the Democratic and Republican Party nominees.
The video will play on a mobile billboard that will circle the Tucson Music Hall, site of Trump’s Thursday campaign event in battleground Arizona.

Harris is seen in the video in a clip from Tuesday’s debate discussing Trump’s comments at his rallies, in what the Democrats characterize as “incoherent ramblings.”

I think blaming women is valid thing to say in terms of minority representation in a democracy. Women aren’t a minority and so (unlike minorities like Black people) they have the numbers to stop someone like Trump. But where it falls down is on the level of individual women, because individual women don’t have any control over what “a majority” of women do and obviously it’s unfair to say to women who vote for Democrats “oh, well, tough luck for you, if a majority of your gender voted your way you could have rights”

It just isn’t a useful approach UNLESS it’s intended to mean “tough luck” or “stop complaining”.

I’m not actually responsible for GOP white women. I don’t have any control over what they do and I’m not one, so directing it to me isn’t relevant.

Dobbs forced them to choose a side: The anti-women fascists, or Democrats. Ultimately, they have agency in the voting booth. They want to vote in Republicans, they shouldn’t be surprised when they get what they voted for. Black women DO vote as a bloc for Democrats, and they are getting increasing influence in the party as a result. But they can’t keep the fascists choads out alone. Not when a majority of white women vote R.

@Hoodie: Well, the Haitian and Venezuelan refugees in FL can’t technically vote, so even if they’re hurt and pissed at what Trump is saying, they can’t really do much. The question is whether the Cuban or Puerto Rican population there sees the newcomers as worthy of the same kind of support or sympathy they received when they had to flee to the mainland and think Trump or Vance are full of shit.

    That’s not necessarily a given.

What’s more, I very intentionally no longer have the kind of relationship with any GOP white women in which it would be acceptable to talk about politics. I screen people. (It’s fucking great, y’all should try it.)

As I said it’s perfectly valid in the context of rights, because minority rights ARE different. Black people, by themselves, could not effect political change thru elections because there simply are not enough of them. That’s not true for women. We’re actually a majority. But as to ME that doesn’t matter, because I need basic human and civil rights regardless of whether 51% of white women vote for Democrats or 49% of white women vote for Democrats. So I do what I did, which is join a political party that is a coalition and put together a majority that way- but it won’t be a majority of my demographic.

“I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift posted, calling Harris a “steady-handed, gifted leader.” In a lighthearted nod, she signed the post as “Childless Cat Lady,” a jab at Trump’s running mate JD Vance, who once referred to some Democrats as “a bunch of childless cat ladies.”

    @Geminid:

I read that the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee reserved $6 million in Portland TV and radio advertising time for this cycle. The plan is to use some on offense against Rep.

Those two purple districts have a lot in common, and thir elections could provide data as to trends in Pacific Northwest politics.

I think Perez has plenty of money this cycle, probably more than the GOP.

Candidate quality matters.  Marie Perez is light years better than the Dem candidate who ran in this district in 2018 and 2020.  And she is actually from the district and not a recent transplant from Portland.  Which might fly in Vancouver but not the vast rural parts of the district.

In the OR 5th, hopefully Bynum will be a better candidate than Jamie McLeod-Skinner in 2022 who was a bad candidate and ran a bad campaign.

    @Kent:

The anti-immigrant bashing is really just racism in disguise (well, not very disguised)

As a few people will point out from time to time in this debate, there is to this day a non-trivial number of Irish immigrants coming in to the East Coast, especially Boston, illegally.  Nobody gives a shit.  Nobody nationally seems to be aware that it’s even happening, and if they do, they don’t seem to think it’s a concern.  It’s not as though the Irish are a population with zero history of crime, terrorism, or other violent misbehavior.  But everybody, in both the rabid anti-immigrant community and among “I am not a racist, but” respectable useful idiots, seems to think it’s all good.

Compare and contrast the reaction to Haitians, Syrians, Central Americans… and it kind of gives the game away.

(Semi-OT: kudos to Boondock Saints for being the only work of pop culture I’m aware of that even acknowledges that this is a still a thing, yes, in this day and age, not just a relic of the Gangs of New York era).

Why on earth is anyone still publishing George Fucking Will? He hasn’t written anything worth reading in decades.

I was wondering that too. Do we have tankie frontpagers?

Dead thread – but we do have a tanker frontpager!

@geg6: I’m sure his estate has plenty of Lawyers Guns and Money to carry the battle on for him.

(More seriously: I didn’t even think to check his mortality state, I was just curious about “song author” vs “performing artist,” having known a theater geek who explained how complicated things can get. That said: rest well, Zeev.)

@frosty: Well, in the video, those young girls who won’t let him be would be his accusers :-). Maybe we can get that lady comedian who lip syncs him, to pretend to sing the song, and get a tired, grainy, somewhat slurred, atonal, voice to get the vocals.

I wonder if Bob Dylan would be willing to take the right drugs….
