Long day today. But I am really excited about the energy from Democrats in the state. We’re not gonna turn blue and Harris won’t win here, but we are rebuilding and have a lot of great candidates and are such a minority party here that we could pick up a bunch of seats.

Chat with y’all tomorrow. BTW- I am still answering the phone with “IN SPRINGFIELD THEY’RE EATING THE DOGS.” Really sets the tone of the conversation.

    Anecdotal evidence I know but on my drive today from Charlottesville to Chapel Hill down through red Virginia/North Carolina country I could count the Trump signs I saw with both hands. An election ago they were all over the place. Heck, 9 months so there were tons of them.

    And I saw several Harris Walz signs where there were no Biden signs not too long ago.

    Man. I get twitchy driving around the S. Wisc. county where our family cabin is, and it broke 58.8% gold plated terlets-man, and W. Va. went 68.6% for that crappy guy.

    Damn.

    Anyway, I hope the Dem party there is rebuilding. No state deserves to have the Democrats who find themselves livin’ there just cut off from some chance of representation and party-based community.

    I’m in a reddish area of a blue state, and driving around here I see a fair amount of signs for R’s in state and local races, which are not accompanied by signs for T.

    @Starfish: Very well done by that reporter. Miller obviously learned a very common tactic, which is to throw a seemingly related, but garbage question at the person who (appropriately!) asked a legit question, as a way to try to derail the interview.

    Dude just does not go for it. Our cable heads could learn a lot from that clip.

    @danielx: Yeah, even putting aside the overall absurdity, the cost issue alone should make it patently obvious what a bullshit claim that is. For bottom surgery, that can run upwards of like $25,000 or more. Teachers are out here buying their own chalk and tissues because the schools have no money, but they’re gonna fork out mid-five figure amounts for this? Is Soros paying for it all?

I am hopeful it will shame (I know, impossible) the media into covering the rallies fully and not just “summarizing” what they think he should have said.     @brendancalling: I can’t even laugh at the dog eating thing it makes me so angry. Springfield needs those people, and they are or will be Vance’s actual constituents. He should feel some responsibility towards them and the city they moved to, but obviously he only feels a duty to look after himself.

    Tim Ryan tried to help his immigrant contituents.

    This pet eating myth isn’t unique to Springfield. My Ohio city has a Nepali community that has really revitalized one part of town. But my husband has heard similar comments from local RWNJs about the Nepalis.

    I still believe that Trump will be competitive for reasons I cannot fathom, but there are hints down the ballot that the GOP is having issues.

     

    Lake is not well liked, in the Congressional races, Ciscomani has been exposed to have NatC ties, local races are getting national attention (I.e. Maricopa County elections board).  Abortion is on the ballot, the GOP super of Schools has blown a big hole in the budget and they are running MAGA extremists all over the place and I get the feeling that a LOT of people are tired of their bullshit.  Not seeing quite so much obvious Trumpy love as before in the city and burbs.

    @BretH: I only saw 3-4 Trump signs or flags on my entire trip on the C&O canal, and I think Uncle Cosmo would say it goes through some blood-red sections of Maryland. As in I was hearing the gunfire from the ranges and the loudmouth assholes on their boats on the Potomac sections of Maryland. Also not a whole lot of Trump signs on the Eastern Shore of Maryland or Virginia during my August trip (I love visiting the Eastern Shore but it’s like Indiana with fresh seafood)

    My mother died earlier this year (in March). My brother performed the last rites the morning after she died. I was able to watch some of it via WhatsApp video.

    In May we had a “celebration of life” gathering in the city where most of my relatives live. It was well-attended and soothed my soul.

And I suspect Melania won’t fight or delay – she’ll probably be relieved to get her severance package secured and in her bank before the stuff  hits the fan and Trump’s assets are dismantled by the feds.     @schrodingers_cat: oh dear, I’m so sorry you lost your mom, that is the one that was my Achilles heel of loss.  She died on a January morning during a polar vortex of bitter, still cold and my family would not hold a celebration of her life service.  I held my own little service of love right away and, later,  family got together in June that year at the cemetery.

    No matter what you decide, it will be the perfectly ok and right thing to do.  May you find peace quickly and bear this burden with strength and fortitude in the meantime.

    @Argiope: I was in West Michigan in mid to late August. Did not see a single Trump sign in the Grand Rapids area and actually not a single sign for any Republican. It was all Harris, Slotkin, Scholten wall to wall.

    Up North there were some Trump signs, especially in fully rural areas. We spent a week in Manistee and I was pleasantly surprised it was roughly 50/50 Harris-Trump there. This is West Michigan small town of roughly 6,300 people on Lake Michigan. Granted the Lakeshore towns tend to be a little more progressive than towns that don’t feature a major tourist draw but still.

Not only is it having real world effects on real people (like Haitian people keeping their kids at home from school so their safe – wtaf), but repeating it even as a joke just reminds non-white people that they’re not considered normal people by a good chunk of the population. Hearing it over and over again in all kinds of contexts would just be painful and alienating, IMO.
