Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Consistently wrong since 2002

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

You can rationalize all you like, but if you’re on board with this man and his allies then you’re embracing white supremacy. It’s not as if he’s coy about it. You’ll never wash that stink off of you. https://t.co/GLzB2xaKMF

Pretty clear TFG’s handlers, such as they are, have decided there’s no point in trying to sanewash him while he recovers from the ego-drubbing Vice President Harris delivered on Tuesday. So they shipped him off to beautiful broken Arizona, and let Kari Lake & Laura Loomer battle it out for top position as his emotional support human…

From 2 days ago. It was the plan.https://t.co/WS6CiySdGg

— Kim Wexler's Ponytail ?????? (@MadisonKittay) September 13, 2024

E.J. Montini, of the Arizona Republic — “Trump campaign has a not-so-funny plan to win Arizona with racist jokes”:

… The New Yorker magazine has an article out this week describing how Trump’s plan to win Arizona in the upcoming presidential election has been “outsourced to Turning Point Action.”

And why not?

As longtime political consultant Chuck Coughlin told the New Yorker, “There is no Republican Party in Arizona. It’s been hijacked. Turning Point Action is the Republican Party for Arizona. It has been taken over from the inside out.”

The article describes how the group has decided that the best way to secure Arizona for Trump is a strategy directed “almost exclusively on reaching voters who are already primed to side with MAGA.”

Forget about everyone else.

Given that, it’s as if Kirk and his pals see no problem having a little racist “fun.” As if any sane person would call it that…

Racism is funny to these guys? Racism is a campaign strategy?

It reminds me of what some people say about the political climate in Arizona: It’s a dry hate.

“The migrants are walking off with the town's geese. They've taken the geese. You know where the geese are in the park, in the lake, and even walking off with their pets. My dog's been taken. My dog's gone.”

Anyone who believes this lie is in a cult.

Wow…. Donald Trump’s rally in Tucson, Arizona was a mess.

Bro was totally slurry and as utterly incoherent he’s ever been.

Let’s recap it:

JD Vance is nowhere to be found. Bro hasn’t been invited to a rally in a while. Telling.

He starts by hyping up the crowd despite the… pic.twitter.com/sIJo6suYbd

— Art Candee ???? (@ArtCandee) September 13, 2024

… He starts by hyping up the crowd despite the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall only having a capacity for 2195 people. There were empty seats too. In comparison, VP Harris had 8600 people at her rally today.

You could tell his tiny crowd size was bothering him.

He claimed he had a “monumental victory” against VP Harris in the debate. Sure, bro…

He said she “spewed lies.” Pure projection.

He whined about Linsey Davis and David Muir.

He lied about the abortion after birth thing again, disgusting.

He’s giggling at his own jokes. I think he’s on something. This is super weird.

He called VP Kamala Harris “the leader of the movement Defund the Police.” Uh, no.

He says Project 2025 “never had my authorization.” He implemented over 2/3 of their policies in 2017.

He says that crime is so much worse now than when he was in office. False. Crime has gone down since the spike when he was POTUS.

He falls back on his Twitter polls as proof that he “won the debate.” Nah, bro.

He seems to think that his debate with Biden counts as debating Harris. Not the case…

He’s slurring calling Harris and Tim Walz “weird.” He clearly doesn’t like being called weird himself, so we should keep doing it. A lot.

He repeats that he won’t do a “third debate” because it’s “too late” since early voting has already started. Donald Trump is a chicken.

He goes on an angry rant about immigrants and migrants…

He whines that VP Harris smiled during the debate. Bro, she was LAUGHING AT YOU.

He’s pushing lies about Springfield, Ohio. FAFO in a swing state, bro. I can’t wait for Haitians to help flip Florida…

He had issues saying “industry,” “Snopes” (he called it “Snoops”), “confiscation,” “notice,” “and,” “interest,” “Russia,” “jokingly,” and “woman.”

The cognitive decline is fierce…

He’s bragging about crowd size again. He’s also saying he did 7 rallies in 2 days. He did not.

He’s now asking how many rallies Biden would do…he keeps forgetting who he’s running against.

He tries to get the crowd excited and it sounded like less than 50 people were clapping. Sad…
He’s crying about Biden again. Yikes. Bro’s mind is mashed potatoes.

He’s back talking about Venezuelans with guns and he’s trying to do math. No joke.

He claims Harris is flying in migrants on jets.

He whines about the Forbes 400 and claims Forbes “isn’t doing so well.” He’s still butthurt that they dropped him from their list…

He’s crying about Biden not talking to Putin…

Donald says he’s going to save the average person in Arizona “$800 and $1000 a month” on their mortgages. Is he planning on giving away free homes? Bro is straight up lying.

He arbitrarily says he’s going to cut their power bills by 50% in the first year. How do people believe this absolute bullsh*.t?…

He says he’s going to cut the cost of new homes by 30-50%. Is he gonna give away land for free? FFS. Bro is mental.

Ah. He just said he’s going to open up federal land for “large scale housing development.” Great. Let’s turn Yellowstone into a strip mall while we’re at it.

He’s complaining that the media covers his inability to say words and calling him “cognitively impaired.” The media genuinely needs to call this out…

He asked “why wouldn’t they like me” about women. UHHHHHHHH. How much time do you have, Donald?

He said women want choice and that he’s for choice. But he’s talking about school choice, not bodily autonomy. I hate this man…

He claims he took in more money from the IRS after he cut taxes for the wealthy, “by a lot.” Not true. Our national debt was skyrocketing under him even prior to the pandemic.

The crowd cheers the loudest for his hateful speech about transgender people…

He’s begging people to get their friends to vote. He knows he’s gonna lose…

This man is one giant ball of hatred and we need this cancerous negativity removed from our society.

Is the media gonna cover any of this or nah?

(Complete recap at the link.)

Loomer will be hastening The Denouement.  It’s been going too slowly, so the injection of vile harpy straight into what’s left of his brain is actually doing us a service in a twisted way.  The utter depravity can no longer be sanewashed or ignored, but has crawled out into the direct sunlight for all to see the horrid pustules glistening and leaking orange pus all over our sidewalks.  Like the track left by a slug, only smellier, the trail leads to Loomer.  He chose unwisely, as always.

He claims Harris is flying in migrants on jets.

The lies are only going to get bigger. He knows his crowds will believe anything he says and no one else will. Our wealthy media class is going to have to work extra hard to drag their fictional Donald Trump over the finish line. And to make sure they never ask another Republican whether they still support this moaning, flailing mess of a human being.

I think the underrated important day coming up is next week when Trump can sell his shares in his Play-Skool Twitter. He might become a billionaire for the first time in his life*, but everyone else will lose their shirts. No one seems to be acting like that might affect his political support, but I think it might.

*(It depends how much goes straight out the back door to Putin, MBS and the Chinese, and we’ll never fully know that.)

His decline is noticeable.  It’s not going to get better.  It’s going to get worse.  The greatly increased stress caused by Tuesday’s beatdown is going to accelerate it.  Standing at a podium at his rallies gatherings, he’s going to see how shrunken and less fired up his “crowds” are and how much more difficult it is for them to ignore total gibberish when it takes up a greater percentage of his “speech” and becomes less conducive to “translation” into something sensible.  Networks, for whom ghoulishness is a part of the DNA, won’t be able to resist being in place to have good shots of the more and more likely catastrophic “event” at one of his “speeches.”

The prominent names now are Charlie Kirk and Laura Loomer.  The supposedly “disciplined campaign” run by LaCivita and Wiles is far enough in the rear-view mirror that I had to remind myself of one of those two names.

We’ve gone from “Biden is old” to dark furriners STEALING AND EATING YOUR PETS. Admit it, you’re curious as to how they’ll top that and the cool thing is that you’ll soon find out.  We’re about to be treated to synergistic Schadenfreude and I’m here for every single moment of it.

Yes, it’s going to be close, blah, blah.  Yes, everyone must work, encourage, vote.  But I’m going to drink Trump’s meltdown in shots.

Someone over at Kos suggested that the most damage Harris did at the debate was to mock his rallies, their sizes and how people get bored and leave. They said that he wouldn’t be able to hold a rally again without thinking those things, and that it would ruin his ability to use them as a safe space.

Reading that summary above, I think they’re right. I think he’s going to end up in a doom spiral of decompensation, flailing and whining all the way to election day.

@hueyplong: Josh Marshall at TPM has an interesting take on the “professional” Trump campaign run by LaCivita/Wiles vs. the feral displays from Trump and fringy followers like Loomer that constitute a second campaign entity. (Here’s a gift link.)

Marshall says both campaigns are running simultaneously and separately, with the LaCivita/Wiles org focusing on paid outreach in the swing states to raise issues where Trump has strength with low-info voters, i.e., the economy and border. Their exclusive aim is to try to pull in unaffiliated voters. The feral circus is all about pumping up the MAGA base.

There are inevitably collisions as Marshall notes. But it makes sense for the two halves of the campaign to operate separately. LaCivita/Wiles can’t control Trump’s big fat mouth. Nobody can.

@p.a.: Yeah, that’s the other thing. The states where there are a lot of Haitians aren’t ones that are really in play… or so we thought. Do they think they’re in danger in Florida? They weren’t gonna carry Massachusetts or New York regardless. There’s some in Pennsylvania, but not very many.

Hmm… Maybe I’m looking at the wrong metric. I know the situation where xenophobic fear really spikes is when there aren’t that many of the feared group but their numbers are rapidly increasing. There are way fewer Haitians in Ohio than there are around here, but bigots were freaking out about them coming into Springfield. So you want places where delta x over x is large. Are some of those swing states?

Triple Hearsay:Original Sources of the Claim that Haitians Eat Pets in Ohio Admit No First-Hand Knowledge

The journey of the viral claim from vague, third hand gossip among Ohio neighbors to the presidential debate stage — where it was broadcast to 67 million people — is as stunning as the claim itself, according to those who started it all.

NewsGuard identified and tracked down the two people central to the claim: Erika Lee, the Springfield resident who wrote the original Facebook post, and Kimberly Newton, the neighbor who had provided her with a third-hand account of the rumor, making Lee’s social media post a fourth-hand account: the alleged acquaintance/cat owner; Newton’s friend; Newton; and Lee, who posted it on Facebook.

In exclusive interviews, NewsGuard spoke both with Lee, a 35-year-old hardware store worker who has lived in Springfield for four years, and Newton, her neighbor and a 12-year resident of Springfield. The interviews reveal just how flimsy and unsubstantiated the rumor was from the beginning — based entirely on third hand hearsay. Yet it quickly gained traction and, remarkably, found its way to Trump’s lips on a national stage.

“I’m not sure I’m the most credible source because I don’t actually know the person who lost the cat,” Newton said about the rumor she had passed on to her neighbor, Lee, the Facebook poster. Newton explained to NewsGuard that the cat owner was “an acquaintance of a friend” and that she heard about the supposed incident from that friend, who, in turn, learned about it from “a source that she had.” Newton added: “I don’t have any proof.”

That adds up to three people with no firsthand knowledge of the allegedly victimized cat: Newton’s “friend,” Newton, and then her neighbor Lee. Or perhaps it’s four people if we count the “source” that Newton says her “friend” relied on.

WASHINGTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) – A Georgia judge on Thursday dismissed two criminal counts in the U.S. state’s 2020 election interference case against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and one other count against allies of the former president.

The ruling means that five of the original 13 criminal counts against Trump in the indictment obtained last year have now been tossed out. McAfee in March dismissed six other counts, including three against Trump.
Trump lawyer Steve Sadow said in a statement that the ruling showed that Trump and his legal team “have prevailed once again.”

    @Matt McIrvin:

They picked Haitians because it WAS a large increase over a short period of time in that city – about 20k in a city of 60k over 6 years. That is big. Springfield had 80k people but like a lot of small Ohio cities in the “meth belt” (real term used by the OH AG) they lost population, were dying, and were down to 60k. No one dropped or sent them there (you didn’t say that but DeWine did). A large number of Haitians moved there and then more came from other places because there was plenty of manufacturing work (thanks Joe Biden) and affordable housing – the housing freed up by the shrinking of the city prior to their arrival.

The same thing has happened in south Toledo but Toledo is larger and Toledo has a long history of being welcoming to immigrants – the city that has Little Syria and welcomed more Syrians in 2017 knows a thing or two about bigotry.

Haitians are hard working (and church going – they’re primarily Catholic). This has been noticed by employers in Ohio – they actually bus Haitians up to where I live – 60 miles from Toledo – to staff poulty processing outfits. The fact that they’re successful as immigrants  only adds to the white majory resentment of them.

But if it hadn’t have been Haitians it would have been some other group. Come on. They’ve been playing this same tactic every single cycle since 2014.

There was a nationally televised “special” on the Haitians in Springfield (quality work where they went there and interviewed people)  and their employers were interviewed and the employers said nice things about Haitians and their work ethic and bad things about the local white people in Springfield, as employees. That’s what fueled the anger.

I’ve talked about this situation a lot here on BJ. Young white men are failing. They don’t work, they don’t become independent from their parents, they won’t do anything to move up, even when it’s offered or there is plenty of opportunity with a booming economy (like now). It isn’t the fault of brown people or immigrants or women – it’s a kind of young white male cultural problem where (frankly) they think they’re too good to work. The Haitians are bearing the brunt of that societal problem. They had nothing to do with it. They just showed up ready to work.

One of the crazies insisted that if Obama were to be elected, everyone’s 401K plans would be hoovered up by the government overnight and we would all be made paupers thereby. I offered to bet this guy some trivial amount of some highly-coveted coffee beans that at the end of Obama’s term, if he were to be elected, we would still have 401Ks.

And when people talk about Seattle or Portland or San Francisco becoming some post-apocalyptic hellhole, they’re not really talking about crime rates or any actual danger citizens are in, they’re talking about homeless people, who are unpleasant and scary to see. And framing them as a threat to be extirpated rather than as people who we are collectively failing.

Even during his term as President, Trump was making noises about rounding them up into camps, and I think that if these people get power again, after they get their ethnic cleansing and transphobia bender started, visible homeless are going to be the next folk they start talking about eliminating somehow.

That’s what he did last time with the 100,000 Honduran immigrants who were on temporary status for 20 years following hurricane Mitch. Wouldn’t renew the executive order, so they had to leave. Now many just stayed on and after 6 years the case finally ended in court. But do we think he’s not going to be doing that to Haitians in Ohio? I’m going to assume that on day 1, all 19,000 of those immigrants will find themselves with a choice to go back to Haiti or be arrested and sent back to Haiti.

Although I traveled successfully with my cats back and forth from my condo to my cabin for quite a few years (weekends), I would never subject any animal to a large crowd of strangers making huge noise!  The cats loved going to the mountains to a quiet, wild and secluded spot (but only upon arrival – at first they suspected a vet trip every time).

    @Peale:

trumps immigration policies involve revoking legal status for immigrants from places he doesn’t like and deporting them. That’s what he did last time with the 100,000 Honduran immigrants who were on temporary status for 20 years following hurricane Mitch.

I forgot about not reauthorizing TPS visas. Yes, this is something they will do if back in power to the Haitians in Springfield.

My basic feeling is they are not going to be as careful* as they were before about following necessary legal steps, when it comes to deportations.

*I know they weren’t careful before. I think this time they’re going to break shit and dare someone to hold them accountable.

@TerryC: While you’re right, I kind of hate Paul Campos’s “Ariana Grande voters” coinage because it implies something he didn’t mean: that there’s some relationship between them and Ariana Grande, or liking Ariana Grande. Really, it was more the opposite, in that they were people who knew as little about politics as Paul Campos did about Ariana Grande. But that’s completely impossible to deduce without the explanation.

@Gloria DryGarden: The thing that strikes me about Venezuelans is that they’re fleeing a left-wing regime and are probably ripe to be Republican allies if they’re naturalized. The Reaganesque play would be to decide that they were the GOOD immigrants, and fearmonger about someone else. But the Trumpist play seems to be more Know-Nothingism revived: if people are coming from bad place X, you treat them not as seekers after freedom who will respond to your anti-X rhetoric, but as carriers of contagion who are going to infect us with the badness.

Stephen Miller was clearly hellbent on reducing legal immigration to zero, or only to immigration from rich white countries from which hardly anyone immigrates anyway, because they’ve got no reason to.

    @Kay:

So, yeah, that’s THE classic trigger for a xenophobic panic. Very few Haitians at all in the state, and suddenly, some dying town has a whole lot of Haitians moving in. Like Somalians in Maine.

    Probably not?

Let’s get right to it – He will not. What you are seeing/hearing is what he is. His brain, no matter what or how bad it was yesterday or years ago, has gone bye bye. He’s the type that everything has to go right for him or it goes epically wrong. And it isn’t going right or good for him and it hasn’t for years. He is not a normal human. His concept of life is that he’s the top of the heap. It’s a heap alright, but it’s a heap that smells really bad, because it is really bad – for him and for everyone else. He’s had his time in the spotlight and he showed us exactly who and what he is. And most do not want what he’s selling. A hundred or hundred and fifty years ago he’d be selling bottles of his crap out of the back of a wagon, and some would buy a bottle or even two. He’d go town to town selling his bottles of crap, but now that’s done on TV and in person, he sells his crap. Doesn’t even have to bottle it. And it aways was crap, it’s just that now it is so obvious that there is only a very small segment/percentage of humanity that will buy it. But it is very likely that there will always be some sort of segment that will buy his crap.

There always is. No one has to that doesn’t want to. Please don’t want to.

In this world there will always be people that will buy the shit that someone is selling out of the back of a wagon – or in this case on TV or online. Doesn’t matter if it’s valuable or worse than worthless (it is #2 – in so many ways) people will buy it. The more it gets to look, smell and is really #2 the fewer will but there will be those that will. It’s humanity, in all it’s glory and all it’s anything but.

Bull and shit is all they have. They supported and elevated a person who only has bullshit coming out of his mouth, his brain, such as it is, filters out everything else, and always has. What they liked about him was that he sounded good with his bullshit because his bullshit was about money – right up to the second he decided to run for political office. Now he has learned to bullshit about everything. Because that is ALL he knows. But because that’s all he knows, that spotlight of the highest office shined on him and let everyone/anyone that didn’t already know, that there is only one thing he knows – and it’s bull and shit, all wrapped up in one so untidy package.

These almost human beings want to destroy everyone/everything they do not approve of. What would be left of humanity would not be much, because they can do nothing to provide life, you know food, air quality, safety concepts, rational government – or any thing else rational…. They are actually playing the kids game “World” trying to make it in their own image. So everything will look, smell and somebody please forbid, taste like shit (I was in the military. I had to eat military food for 3+ yrs. Two weeks was my limit of great, decent food. I sometimes don’t comment for a few days, I’ve had people comment on my comments in a negative manner and have not answered them, etc, etc.

Life goes on, humans have issues, sometimes they have nothing to say, sometimes what they have to say would be inappropriate so they don’t say it publicly. And often the reason has nothing to do with other parts of their lives.
