I am exhausted. Long day of work, four hours cutting the soccer fields today, and then the gym. I’m pooped.

I’m horrified by the stochastic terrorism going on in Springfield:

Two hospitals in Springfield, Ohio, were sent into lockdown after bomb threats, police said Saturday, marking the fourth such case in as many days that appears linked to false claims circulating among the far right that Haitian immigrants there are eating domestic pets and wildlife.

Saturday’s threats came even after the woman who started the rumors acknowledged to NBC News that they were unfounded and publicly apologized.

Kettering Health Springfield was one of the medical facilities targeted, with officials later saying they found nothing suspicious during a search. Another hospital, Mercy Health’s Springfield regional medical center, received a similar threat.

A spokesperson with Mercy Health said the hospital has continued to operate and thanked Springfield police as well as hospital staff “for their swift, efficient and caring response”.

The bomb threats Saturday came after others had been called in to government buildings Thursday, forcing their closure and causing local schools to be evacuated.

This is stochastic terrorism. Donald Trump and JD Vance are terrorists. There is nothing fundamentally different from what they are doing Radio Rwanda was doing to Hutsis during that genocide.

There is no bottom for these motherfuckers.

I think we should try to find a mom and pop Haitian restaurant or business and promote them. I might even take a drive to Springfield to eat next weekend. Stop and see Joelle’s mom on the way home (she’s been released and is home- thank you all for your kind words they meant a lot to Joelle).

I’m gonna watch tv and try not to break shit.

      A campaign aide for Ohio U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno resigned Friday in connection with a confrontational encounter between the staffer and police officers during the arrest of another Moreno campaign aide on suspicion of drunken driving.
      Colton Henson, whom the campaign described as a contracted political adviser, resigned the same day the Chillicothe-based newspaper Scioto Valley Guardian published police body-camera video showing Henson arguing with police officers as they arrested Moreno campaign finance assistant Abby Wright in the Pickaway County village of Ashville on Sept. 1.

      According to the village website, Henson is also a councilman in Ashville.

      Bernie Moreno had a bad week. It also came out this week that he doesn’t have an MBA, although he listed one on various biographical clips.

      Donald Trump said Saturday  that Springfield, Ohio, has “been taken over by illegal migrants,” and that he doesn’t know about the bomb threats the town has been receiving since he and other Republicans spread false claims about Haitian immigrants eating pets there.

      “I don’t know what happened with the bomb threats. I know that it’s been taken over by illegal migrants, and that’s a terrible thing that happened. Springfield was this beautiful town, and now they’re going through hell,” the former president told reporters as he dropped by the Las Vegas Police Protective Association.

      Seem to me that a candidate for president should know these things.  But apparently he knows nothing.  He spews nonsense and hateful rhetoric every day but he knows nothing.

      I had a nice time at the fundraiser reception with Madam Future President this afternoon in DC. Apparently a fundraising reception is kind of like a rally, except there are free hors d’oeuvres and drinks while you wait for it to start. (If you give a boatload of money there’s a VIP reception, where you get to mingle with the candidate and speakers.) There were several good speakers; Jaime Harrison, Common, and James Clyburn were the highlights. The event was associated with a Black Caucus event tonight, so lots of member were there. I got to shake Jaime Harrison’s hand because he ended up seated near me after he spoke, and I could have shaken Clyburn’s hand if I was more pushy.

      Kamala Harris’ speech was similar to rally speeches, but a little lower-key for a smaller audience. She was strong and inspiring; she spoke about the terrible things we’re up against, but we also need to win so we can build a better future for everyone together. She called on us all to work on the campaign for the next 52 days, but also talk to our neighbors whoever they may have voted for, to build community and connections because that will last beyond the next 52 days.

      One other notable thing, don’t know if it was different for this sort of group or if it’s a change going forward. She emphasized the hard work, but she didn’t say “we are the underdogs.” She said “we are going to win!”

      Busy day tomorrow – my aunt from SF inms visiting, and we’ll probably watch the Packer game tomorrow. Then got offered $5 tickets to a Single-A baseball championship series (Game 1). So lots of driving, too, but hopefully it’s a fun time all around.

      I remember the Willie Horton ad, the era of Jesse Helms, all of the shit that was aimed at Barack Obama and so on and so forth. I don’t remember anything nearly this ugly in US politics during my life. Go back to the heyday of the Klan to find something similar. Or, drawing from my cultural history and going a bit further afield , the pogroms ginned up against the Jews in Poland and Russia. Plenty of other ugly examples throughout history as well.

      Anyone who supports Trump is, at a minimum, ok with this sort of rhetoric and what comes from it. It’s not a deal breaker for them.

      Went to the farmer’s market this morning and saw something new to me: a whole lot of Harris-Walz lawn signs in the surrounding neighborhood. And one or two Trump ones.

      By the highly imperfect lawn sign metric, I guess enthusiasm is up. Massachusetts is very blue but this city is only mildly blue, and this is the first time I’ve really seen a lot of that happening since Obama was running. In 2016, I think the Clinton supporters were scared to put them out, the Trump supporters were loud and proud and sometimes covered their whole yard with signs, and we only had a few Hillary signs at the very end of the campaign. We got some BLM signs out in 2020, less enthusiasm for Biden.

      In reality there’s barely 5,000 in the entire state, a little more than double 2021.

      The Springfield City School District posts their enrollment online.

      This week, their head count is 7,415.

      Huge increase from last year, right?

      Except not… The district is still below pre-pandemic levels. They had 7,716 students in 2020….

      These [supposed] 15,000-25,000 Hatian immigrants beyond what the Census lists?

      They’re not dying,
      they’re not having extra babies,
      they’re not in the schools?

      Where are they?…

      In 2022, ACS listed 5,442 people born in Haiti in Ohio.

      In 2023, ACS listed 5,264 people.

      This is fake. And bad journalism.

      Especailly since they’ve been making up this number for a year now – and we have the data for the ACTUAL population when this rumor started….

      Bottom line:

      Folks are choosing to believe and spread any of these lies 🐈🐕🦆 because it fits their racist narrative.

      Inventing a massive population surge of immigrants is just to serve this. It isn’t about facts for them, it’s about targeting communities of color.

      @Michael Bersin: My dad grew up in Chilhowee (Missouri).  When we traveled from Kansas City to Chilhowee to visit my grandparents, he would not choose the route through Holden.  He hated that town, but wouldn’t say why.  A few years ago, he told me the reason he hated the town was that it was so racist, and I assume it was over the top, because it isn’t like the other little towns around weren’t.

      Dad did go to Holden, as a kid, to watch a baseball game between a town team and a Negro League team – Shoeless Joe Jackson played in the game he saw.  The black players probably had to get out of town before sundown, well, you know.

      It’s amazing my dad isn’t horrifyingly racist, growing up around there.  My paternal grandpa was a big fan of George Wallace, and it wouldn’t surprise me if I learned he had done some KKK shit when he was younger.  Grandpa loved his grandkids, but he was a shitty husband and not that great towards his kids.

      In 2008 two of us (always at least two) were assigned to do a door to door lit drop by the Obama campaign. We asked for and received a list of the identified threats from that area so that we wouldn’t inadvertently knock on the wrong door. I remember telling the Obama campaign staffer that I didn’t want the Federal authorities recovering my body from a shallow grave six months later. We did the lit drop, no real problems – and noted a significant number of Obama yard signs in those neighborhoods.

      Chilhowee has the reputation of having Missouri’s shortest parade and parade route during campaign season. I’ve lined up for the parade an hour and a half before it starts. Once the parade starts you proceed a block, turn left, then go for another block, sort of. Then the parade is over. The parade outnumbered the residents watching it. By a lot.

      @Michael Bersin: The Chilhowee fair was a big deal during my childhood (and teenage) days!  All my aunts, uncles and cousins would show up – kind of like a high school reunion.

      As a matter of fact, my mother was the Chilhowee Fair Queen in 1957.  She received a Bulova watch.  My mother’s family was not an original Chilhowee family; they moved there from NW Arkansas (Mt. Judea, Arkansas – local pronunciation is “Mount Judy,” lol).  Mom was born in Magic Springs.

      Yes, I claim hillbilly heritage.  That damned JD Vance wouldn’t survive a minute in the Arkansas hills.

      I trust we’ll ll soon be fundraising to help, if needed, to win democrat seats in Ohio and Montana. Aren’t we already doing something for Montana? I don’t have it all memorized.

      all this business of mocking folks who recently moved here, for not speaking English yet, it really bothers me. I almost want to cry. Most of us are descendents at least in part from immigrants.
      Plus speaking another language makes a person smarter. Those Haitians, some of them already speak some Spanish, if they have crossed the island border to visit Dominican Republic. Both languages vpcan be super useful. I can imagine some bilingual education growing some sweet roots in these communities. Bilingual is very big in Denver, some schools have transition classes, and support for ELLs, but there are a number of schools that support everyone learning in two languages. L1 & L2. It builds community, connects people. Yes, there are politics, and games played, but the kids, wow, everybody catches up to grade level by 4th grade, but they’re bilingual. Languages can be fun. Btw, English is pretty hard to learn, terrible spelling and phonetics, more exceptions. So it makes sense to be kind an patient.
      thise skewers if hate and division, probably only speak INE language only. That’s called monolingual, but the synonym, for it is “an American”

      @Gloria DryGarden: I’ve always had a hard time learning other languages, for reasons that will never be clear to me because I love hearing them. I consider the language to be the music of a people and their culture, and not being a xenophobic asshole, I learn by listening.

      ( Food’s another great unifier. Everyone has to eat, and through every country has some peculiar culinary traditions, a lot of times their food is a window into their culture, and a simple way to travel the world even if the rest of your body can’t handle it. )

I’m tired from all my rage, but this pisses me off, and I’d like those fuckers to pay for the personnel costs of having to spend time on bomb threats, the work missed, as a total aggregate cost for all the parents who had their kids home from school.
      even that, I’d like to see the total practical costs listed.

      And that’s before you look at the mental health costs, terrorizing a community, fomenting hatred, fear, division, separation and a whole bunch of lies, the damages to a community and the personal costs, for political gain.

      I feel so angry. I need to sleep, I’ve had a long run of messed up sleep. Getting pissed won’t help w sleep, and I’m so hot angry I can barely write a good sentence, or trot out interesting swear words. Anger like lava, and shaking. That people are doing this to each other, in my country. Helpless rage, just triggers my ptsd. But this Ohio/ Haitian immigrant thing and anything like it, is not ok. I would like those fuckers to pay for their damage.

      at least the mayor spoke out that it was damaging as hell. Maybe in a while he’ll endorse Harris-Walz.

      It’s a different world than then. There are sadly, lots of ways to send emails faxes and phone calls anonymously, from all across the globe. If you have a suspect, it is easy to work it backwards through their devices. Working it forward is almost impossible.

      @Quiltingfool: My mother was born on a farm near Chilhowee and my father was born right in town.  It’s still alive, although it’s so small I don’t see how it survives. Had family in Sedalia, Lee’s Summit, Clinton and a few other little towns in Johnson County.  My gob is well and truly smacked…..
