Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Republicans in disarray!

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I really should read my own blog.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Be a wild strawberry.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

“Alexa, change the president.”

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Substance over bluster.

Optimism over negativity.

And yes, a new generation over the same, old, tired show.

She crushed it tonight.

— Pete Buttigieg (@PeteButtigieg) September 11, 2024

Republicans should consider having Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell tell Donald Trump that after his poor debate performance he should step down as the nominee for the sake of his party and country – the stakes are just too high! – instead of whining about the moderators.

— Matthew Gertz (@MattGertz) September 11, 2024

I want to make one thing super clear:

Not even the most obsequious Republican actually thinks Trump won that debate.

The same people who were on TV crowing about how great he did were privately praying he wouldn’t take their comments as encouragement to do another one.

— Paul Mooney 慕亦仁 (@pjmooney) September 13, 2024

… Throughout the evening, the Harris campaign had a group of undecided voters in the battleground states reporting their feelings about what was happening onstage in real time. Such “dial testing” is standard practice, but campaigns don’t tend to share any details of how that testing is going if things aren’t going well. On abortion, Trump insisted Democrats were open to executing infants, claimed credit for overturning Roe, and refused to say whether he’d oppose a nationwide ban, while Harris spoke about women affected by the bans. David Plouffe, one of her senior-most advisers, revealed that there was a 40-point gap between the voters’ approval of the candidates’ answers during this exchange. “Widest gap I’ve ever seen in debate dials,” he said.

Only later did the Harris campaign’s private testing confirm one of the central underlying hypotheses of her candidacy: that Americans are tired of the Trump era, and want to believe a new political age is possible. The debate’s low point for these voters, according to the dials, was when Trump once again claimed to have won the 2020 race as part of a longer conspiratorial ramble. Its high point for Harris was when she replied to Trump’s spurious claim that she hadn’t always identified as Black by detailing his history of racism, such as calling for the execution of the Central Park Five, before ending on an up beat: “The American people want better than that. Want better than this.”

Ever since Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee, Republicans have dismissed the excitement around her, saying there is a big difference between vibing with partisans and actually convincing voters. Once Harris’s poll numbers started to flatten out this month, it became obvious that this was a big part of her challenge: convincing this final decisive slice of the electorate that she’s up to the job of president and that she’s sufficiently different from Biden. In front of her biggest audience yet on Tuesday, Harris succeeded in making the case.

The real loser was Donald Trump, who was so traumatized by the experience he may need to bandage his ear https://t.co/3On1g1t7DG

Jennifer Rubin, at the Washington Post, “Harris excels. ABC does its job. Both were deadly for Trump”:

Vice President Kamala Harris demonstrated in Tuesday night’s presidential debate, in case any rational person had doubts, that she is the only decent, prepared and fit candidate in the presidential race. In both her answers and demeanor, she demonstrated the unmistakable contrast between a mature, responsible adult and someone who resembles the mean, crazy relative no one wants to sit next to at the holiday table.

When ABC News’s debate moderators, Linsey Davis and David Muir, opened the proceedings, she came out swinging, rattling off a list of her domestic proposals. She plainly had her ducks in a row, attacking Donald Trump for the largest trade deficit in history, for selling microchips to China and even for praising Chinese President Xi Jinping for his handling of the coronavirus. Trump was clearly rattled, resorting to lies about everything from his economic record to abortion.

Throughout, Harris remained calm and collected, not bothering to rebut every lie, and instead hitting Trump on the main issues — his favoritism toward the rich, his contempt for democracy and his weakness on national security…

Harris was properly aggressive throughout, launching into Trump’s criminal record, his inherited wealth and his weakness on foreign policy, citing his susceptibility to flattery from dictators. Again and again, she raised the number of his former aides who now show disdain for him. (“I have talked with military leaders, some of whom worked with you. And they say you’re a disgrace.”) Harris utterly flummoxed Trump by mocking his rally rhetoric as bizarre and tedious, noting that his followers leave early. That seemed to set Trump off, as he went on a tirade about having “the biggest rallies, the most incredible rallies in the history of politics.”…

Some pundits before the debate set a flurry of tests that Harris supposedly had to pass: Could she appeal to independents, could she appear presidential, could she show mastery of policy details? Harris did all that and more, conveying an optimistic vision that offered a dramatic contrast with Trump’s apocalyptic rhetoric.

Disregard any post-debate analysis that says the confrontation won’t matter, won’t change any minds. Harris did superbly Tuesday, and it will make a difference. Fair-minded voters will notice.

… Another question followed from Dr. Yusef Salaam, a Harlem, New York city councilman, as well as a member of the Exonerated Five. The group of four Black and one Latino boys at the time were wrongly imprisoned for the assault of a Central Park jogger. Trump took out a full page ad, calling for the death penalty. After years of imprisonment, the five men were released and found innocent due to DNA evidence. Trump has refused to apologize.

On Tuesday night, Salaam attempted to confront Trump.

“Mr. President I am a member of the Exonerated Five, Dr. Yusef Salaam,” said the city council member. Trump then replied, “Oh, are you with me?” Salaam replied flatly, “No!”

Salaam recounted the moment, saying Trump “put his hand up and walked away.” Before the debate, he told theGrio that being a Harris surrogate was a full-circle moment for him…

Charlie Warzel, at the Atlantic, on “Kamala Harris’s Secret Weapon”:

… Harris is the first candidate in a primary or general election to embody what feels like a “post-Trump” ethos. In other words, she’s the first person to run against the former president who does not treat him as the center of the U.S. political solar system. Rather than cave to his gravitational, attentional pull, Harris offers a different version of Trump: He’s not the sun; he’s the guy who has overstayed his welcome at a party…

Harris was able to reckon with the darker elements of a Trump presidency while also seizing on the fundamental absurdity of Trump as a candidate—usually with her expressions and body language. Instead of getting baited into Trump tangents—childishly arguing over golf prowess, for example, as Biden did—she treated his digressions as unserious or unworthy. Harris’s facial expressions last night made for easy memes and screenshots, but they’re also of a piece with Democrats’ most salient line of attack—that Republicans are “weird” and enmeshed in an extremely online far-right universe of alternative facts. The weird critique has stuck for Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, precisely because it is dismissive of Republican talking points. Instead of pearl-clutching, it presents the MAGA arm of the party as lost and out of touch. Harris’s incredulous split-screen looks during last night’s debate were, essentially, the visual embodiment of that critique. Her constant baiting throughout the night—calling Trump a disgrace and needling him about the size of his rallies—successfully lured Trump into long tangents that are legible only to those steeped in an extended universe of right-wing viral grievance.

It’s unclear just how much presidential debates matter, even in close elections, though some evidence suggests that they don’t change many voters’ minds. Regardless, Harris’s performance managed to cast Trump as a dusty old artifact—a massive paradigm shift, as Trump has so thoroughly saturated our collective attention that he can feel like an immovable object. Trumpism’s shock-and-awe approach—the trolling, dog whistling, and constant memes and tweets—has been absurd and threatening since the real-estate mogul rode down his golden escalator in 2015. But it has also often felt ascendant—the early stages of a cynical, frequently cruel, often internet-powered faux-populist political project. What Harris’s campaign and debate style propose, however, is a different view of Trump, not as the central figure in American politics but as a vestigial element of a movement that’s so curdled by grievance and enmeshed in an alternate reality that it is becoming not just culturally irrelevant, but something far worse: pitiable.

2/ that he was unprepared for her elevation and at a minimum worried about facing her in a debate. He basically told on himself, and told her potential supporters that she was for real. It was a big deal.

— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) August 26, 2024

The pundits wanted this debate to be about nitpicking VP Harris and finding ways to say she didn't have a good debate. And that's what makes the shellacking that she gave Trump all the more impressive. https://t.co/TmFJKwQRr7

Emptywheel had a really good essay on the rhetorical task Kamala faced:

    emptywheel.net/2024/09/15/how-kamala-harris-dodged-the-two-truths-problem/

So every time you try to fact check Trump, you simply reinforce the polarization in the US. You simply reinforce the belief of Trump’s supporters that the other half of society simply hates Trump’s truth. And so, counterintuitively, fact checking has the opposite effect you might want it to have: it reinforces the loyalty of Trump’s rubes, rather than leads them to doubt him.

Kamala Harris appears to understand that. One of the most fascinating aspects of last week’s debate is how, with one major and two lesser exceptions, rather than directly disputing Trump’s truth, Harris instead rebutted his false claims by making Trump look weak.

    Oh, yeah.

A different take is that I wonder if any current or former federal elected official has ever publicly expressed hatred of a private citizen?

Trump violates so many norms, so often, that we may not take each instance seriously enough. He ought to be treated as dangerous, given his wealth and power. that’s right, a fender-bender in a small Ohio city is now a front-page story in the New York Post. no one died, no one was injured. there are tens of thousands of minor traffic accidents ever year in America. Springfield is five hundred miles from New York City — so why is this front-page news on a New York newspaper?

this is why: because the driver was Haitian. aha! Haitian Criminality! everything Dear Leader said about those people is true!

this evil Haitian didn’t single out just anyone for his vehicular crime spree — no, his victims were a mother and her autistic daughter. the swarthy migrant probably did it on purpose. Haitian Criminality!

now tell me if this sounds familiar.

Der Stürmer notably perpetuated the myth of Jewish criminality by soliciting public slander about German Jews—in the form of readers’ letters—and passing it off as fact.

Funny how the MSM never “notices”,…….

The article in the post speaks to the neckline

    washingtonpost.com/style/fashion/2024/09/15/laquan-smith-kamala-harris-cbc-dress/

Smith’s unusual neckline and corseted waist gave the design some extra pizazz: It was “structured and sculpted to elongate her silhouette, but still soft enough to maintain a sense of grace,” Smith said in an email interview on Sunday.

    ….

The neckline is a bold statement — structured and sculpted to elongate her silhouette, but still soft enough to maintain a sense of grace. It’s designed to show that women can be both commanding and sophisticated, all in the same breath.

Suspected Gunman Said He Was Willing to Fight and Die in Ukraine

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, told The New York Times in 2023 that he had traveled to Ukraine and wanted to recruit Afghan soldiers to fight there. […]

Mr. Routh, a former roofing contractor from Greensboro, N.C., was interviewed by The New York Times in 2023 for an article about Americans volunteering to aid the war effort in Ukraine. Mr. Routh, who had no military experience, said he had traveled to the country after Russia’s invasion and wanted to recruit Afghan soldiers to fight there.

@Jackie: What device are you using?  Does “freezing” mean that you can’t interact with the browser at all?  E.g. the “…” menu at the top doesn’t work?  Or  does it mean you can’t move the page up-and-down ?  Does this happen immediately after refreshes, or long after a refresh ?

@Chet Murthy: After I post, or if I take a break then refresh it takes forever to refresh. Then once it’s refreshed and I attempt to scroll down it bounces up and down between last post and beyond where I left off before finally settling down to where I left off. I’m going to call it a night and see if things improve in the morning.

Obviously this is a “my problem” problem and not a BJ site issue.

I feel like I’m swirling the contents of a chamber pot about by even bringing this up, but …. so far as I can tell, the rumors of Loomer blowing the Mushroom King are being spread by Milo Y. He’s tight with MTG who is famously feuding with Loomer, so that might be all there is to it. Milo has said in the past that anyone who crosses him has found out what a “bitchy little queen I can be.” And, for the record, his claims that he is a born again Xtian who no longer indulges in gay sex are almost certainly false, not that the latter is any of my damn business.

@Darkrose: There were a lot of military cosplayers who showed up in Ukraine expecting military commissions.  I remember one gamer who was interviewed was hoping for a commission as a sniper.

    Ukraine sent them back home.

They welcomed volunteers with actual military experience, though.

@Jackie: After it settles down, does it later on behave erratically?  Or only in the period after a refresh?

B/c if that’s what you’re seeing, then I suspect it’s b/c of all the tweets.  They can cause the browser window to bounce around, since as each tweet renders, the page has to be resized to accommodate it.  And of course, it can consume resources to load/render a tweet, so that could cause the page to freeze.  The key tell is that “if you wait a good while after refresh, does the page no longer behave erratically?”  B/c that is what indicates that it’s about the loading of whatever-it-is that is on the page.  Which, typically, implicates tweets (since images can be marked with a rows/cols size, and IIRC WordPress does so).

I don’t know how, but, if I did, I just realized I’d really like to hang something around Vance’s neck is, he’s claiming he’s right to talk about dog-eating because he must raise the concerns of his constituents… which include the Haitians living in Ohio legally. Just because they can’t vote doesn’t mean it’s okay to crap all over them.

It does mean it looks *safe* to crap all over them, but that is only true if no one loves the strangers  – the ones who asked for our help, and we said “yes, we can help you, lawfully, so we will” – if no one loves the needy strangers, then it *is* safe to crap on them. But if you feel that they should be treated with dignity and respect (even if you don’t want them to stay very long), then it should be a bit stomach churning to have such a weird blood libel thrown around.

At least the Karen who made the facebook post said she never intended for it to turn into this massive wave of hate, and maybe this will become a moment when we reconsider our culture’s norms and mores, and realize “yes, just a bit of hate, at the wrong time, *can* be super-toxic.”

    Arrived back home last Sunday.

Only one Broadway show was interested in seeing, while there Once Upon a Mattress, which opened in late August. Sliver of a show, scriptwise. Had seen it before eons ago.

But this revival stars Sutton Foster, whom I’ve been itching to see on stage at least once. Well worth it for that alone. (Plus managed to score a last minute ticket in person at the box office for a bargain price – less than what the half price booth in Times Square was asking when I went online to look earlier in the day.)
