It’s really great to have all of these women help us beat the smallest man in the world..… pic.twitter.com/mA9JN2yYG2

— Acyn (@Acyn) September 14, 2024

Mr. Charles P. Pierce, at Esquire, on “Fun for Its Own Sake”:

Ever since she ascended to the presidential nominee of her party, Vice President Kamala Harris has been riding a wave of something I thought had been lost in this country since around half-past Tet ’68–fun without meanness; joy, uncontaminated by bile and spite, happiness, for its own sake. It certainly did not hurt that she chose Coach Santa Claus for a running mate. It also did not hurt that she was running against the personification of meanness, bile, spite, and misery for its own sake. Prior to Tuesday night’s debate, Rep. Eric Swalwell told Jimmy Kimmel that Harris was “serious, but she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s fearless and, also, she knows how to have a little fun. And I think the team that has the most fun is the team that wins.”

Swalwell turned out to be right. Harris not only buried the former president* with her preparation and her command of the facts, but also with reaction shots and, on at least a couple of occasions, outright laughter. She smiled while delivering the zingers. She was enjoying herself, and she was giving us permission to enjoy ourselves, too.

This is something on which I’ve been banging my little tin drum for decades now. Politics is a serious business, but a campaign does not have to be. In fact, a hyper-serious campaign is a losing campaign. Swalwell was correct in that. Our history is not all crises weathered and problems solved. It also is brass bands, and torchlight parades, and barrels of hard cider at rural polling stations…

It was American politics that gave the world free speech and guarantees against self-incrimination. It was American campaigns that gave the world the word “booze.” We all contribute in our own way…

A bunch of white-supremacist dickheads bought the local Wal-Marts in and around Charlottesville, Virginia out of Tiki torches and proceeded to march to the defense of a statue of the traitor, Robert E. Lee. “You will not replace us,” they chanted, their faces twisted and ugly, “Jews will not replace us.” The subsequent riot, of course, brought blood to the streets of Mr. Jefferson’s town, and brought the president* of the United States out to tell us about the good people on both sides. On this past Tuesday night, it seemed, that all the torches provided warm light again.

Also, George Will has (half-heartedly) endorsed Harris, which I personally find more distasteful than Dick Cheney doing so, in the way Grima Wormtongue is more repulsive than Sauron.

Small man hires even smaller man…

Vance saying "dude I've always liked you" on twitter while desperately trying to backpedal on his Kristallnacht posting might be the most pathetic thing a vice presidential candidate has ever done pic.twitter.com/o2drlvFqtv

This should be obvious but: this feels like the behavior of a campaign that’s losing, badly. https://t.co/FLK2Gf1F53

In Iowa the Des Moines Register sponsors a poll, the Iowa Poll. Over the last few election cycles it has been remarkably accurate.

In late June this poll indicated Trump was leading Biden by a whopping 18 points.

This morning, the Des Moines Register reports, under the headline”New Ballgame,” Trump’s lead over Harris is just 4 points (47-43).

The poll was conducted September 8 -11. So, the full impact of the debate is not reflected in the results.

Does two months in a row signify a trend?

For the second month in a row, the FT-Michigan Ross poll showed Kamala Harris with a narrow advantage over Donald Trump on stewardship of the economy, with 44% of registered voters saying they trusted the Democratic vice-president to handle the economy and 42% backing the Republican former president.

Also interesting: “Of the nearly 3/4 of respondents who said they watched the 90-minute debate, 48 percent said they trusted Harris more to manage the economy, compared with 42 percent for Trump.”

Selzer said the poll findings “signal a change in the mood of the electorate.”

Now, 81% of all Iowans say they will definitely vote in the general election, up from 76% in June. However, some of the demographic groups more likely to favor Harris are showing increased participation.

Women show an 8-percentage-point uptick in likely voting since June, Iowans younger than 45 show a 10-point increase, city dwellers show a 6-point bounce, and those with a college degree are up 9 points.

Can you buy two adjoining economy light seats for yourself? A flight attendent told us she does that when she flies. You buy and list both in your name. I’ve never tried it.

SC, this is a good idea if you can afford it.  And I’ve done it, on Delta, though that was back in 2009. For those JFK-SVO flights I just mentioned, my wife and I bought a third seat, and having the extra room to lean into made a big difference.

@JPL: I feel like Vance has lived in a universe of such continuous positive reinforcement for his own value and virtue that he really doesn’t think anything he says or does is open to critical examination. Like he defines what it means to be smart and insightful. Telling an interviewer to shut up is such an admission of being in way over his head.

He’s the Ohio senator! If Springfield was “hurting” why didn’t he go there months ago? They’re HIS constituents, not Dana Bash’s.

Sherrod Brown told us he had never met Vance but called Vance after the election to congratulate him. Vance told Sherrod “I’m told you have the best constituent services staff in Congress” – apparently couldn’t find high quality hires on the Right to staff his own. They were supposedly calling his office! He did NOTHING.

And at some point the media is going to realize the sanewashing is making them look like idiots. (Yeah, at heart I’m a pie-eyed optimist, I still believe that).

Even if that’s true, the fight isn’t over. We need the House. We need the Senate. We need to regain the Supreme Court as soon as possible. Those things are all necessary to saving democracy and restoring the rule of law.

What’s supposed to happen is that he hands the corporate media a pro-GOP talking point and then they swarm the Democrats with louder and louder questions about why they’re failing to address this non-existant problem. A new talking point each week. Accelerating towards the date of the election. Feeding the impression that the nation is in crisis and only Republicans understand and have plans to defend it from caravans/ebola/terrorists/teh gays, etc etc.

That’s the way it’s always been. Doesn’t look like it’s that way anymore.

To Charles Pierce’s point I agree that I feel that change in mood he talks about more and more. A lot of it is among women, who in my neighborhood are openly enthusiastic about defeating TFG. Postcard writing parties are being organized among friends, signs and bumper stickers are being shared. I mean, we’re sitting in a perfect storm of post-Dobbs hellscape, strong female candidate at the top of the ticket, and two of the most openly misogynistic opposing candidates who aren’t even self-aware enough to moderate their rhetoric when it’s abundantly clear that it is not playing well.

My best guess is that they thought they could squeak out an EC steal against Biden with some compliant election officials here and there, but once the game changed they have been completely unable to adjust. To serve a combination of of needs including soothing TFG’s ego and keeping their base ‘energized’ they started the current horror show of eliminationist rhetoric.

I think Biden gave the nation a taste of a government that wants to work for its people and most folks want more of it.

BTW, Christopher Bouzy is releasing his new maps predicting the outcome of the 2024 election for the EC presidential and Senate races today at 2 p.m. Spoiler Alert: He definitely thinks Florida is in play. https://spoutible.com/pod/66d6f712d52e2559ef4743db
