I’m on Hawaii time, and it’s a Sunday so I had to spend a few hours in church, so I’m just catching up with the madness that is the Trump campaign. Let’s begin with this:
Then, doubling down on the cat eating:
Then, because Florida, there were shots fired outside Mar-a-Lago, and the campaign immediately issued a press release about that.
JD also stunk up the place on CNN, admitting to Dana Bash that he’s making up stories about Springfield to get attention:
He was also an asshole to Bash, keeping that strong “red pilled incel” energy alive to energize the critical bitter young white guy who can’t get a date vote, a group that was never going to vote for Trump until JD joined the ticket. Note that Mike DeWine put on his big boy pants and said that things are fine, actually, in Springfield, though he still supports Trump and Vance, because he’s term limited and hoping for some sweet wingnut welfare.
There’s even more than this, but I want to close on the NYT waking from their dogmatic slumber and doing a wee bit of research on what was promising to be the next Springfield, Aurora, CO. They discovered what anyone who had been following Denver media for the last couple of weeks already knew: there are no apartment buildings in Aurora being taken over by Venezuelan gangs. There’s just a greedy slumlord with a history of beefs with the town making up stories about gangs to distract from the rats and roaches.

All of those topics have been hot discussion topics on this morning’s threads, but it’s great that you have now compiled all the crazy into one thread. Let’s discuss, jackals.
Will Taylor Swift write a new song about Trump?
Will Brittany Mahomes pull her endorsement of Trump now that Trump hates her friend Taylor?
Will JD Vance create more stories for the media from random crackpots calling in with conspiracy theories to his campaign office?
Will Trump ever read a paper or study the (actual) news?
Will Laura Loomer sue Bill Maher?
Will Trump dump Laura Loomer?
Is this the National Enquirer or real life?
Falling Diphthong
Just returned from a bike ride, and when we stopped for lunch there was a table of Trump fans. They thought Trump should cut an ad that said “Hey Taylor, too bad eight year olds can’t vote!” And I thought “Yes. Stay in your little Facebook bubble of hate, and keep telling each other that Taylor Swift’s fan base consists only of eight year olds.” And biked on home.
These people are out there. But I don’t think they have good reads outside their little hate bubble.

Incidentally, are Kamala and Tim Walz out golfing today
And I do wonder what specifically roused der Trump to say he hates Taylor Swift. The endorsement has been out a few days. Was he shown recent internal polls? Is he just grabbing more attention?
I guess if the goldfish media is writing about that, they’re not paying attention to Laura Loomer?
waspuppet
None of this matters unless CNN, the NYT et al remember this tomorrow and the stories going forward are “Republicans rely on lies in campaign’s home stretch” instead of letting them Wile E. Coyote their way through this and emerge Tuesday without a scratch and with a brand new plan which our wealthy media class takes at face value all over again.
Which is exactly what will happen.
Betty
Small correction. The shooting was in the vicinity of the golf course, not Mar-a-Lago. Still no threat to Trump. Just two guys shooting at each other.
Falling Diphthong
@Scout211: Josh Marshall speculated that it felt like a bunch of people close to the Trump campaign knew something horrifying about him and Loomer. Thus the sudden eruption Friday of “Please please please put a story on the TV about how his base doesn’t want to see him with her.” It feels like there’s something specific there that hasn’t come out.

But I don’t think they have good reads outside their little hate bubble.
They don’t. They think that their’s is the only way humanity works, by hate. They have zero idea of humanity or reality. They want all the things and people that have not allowed them to ruin the place so that they have a chance of being popular or in any way powerful. Their hate is about making others smaller, less, because all they have is their hate. And because of that they cannot actually fit into humanity without projecting that hate. It is a vicious circle though, if they didn’t have the hate that they believe will benefit them, they could fit into circles that were not just about hate. This is the story of humanity since there were more than 4 humans. There will likely always be a segment that is pissed that they can only fit into one group and that is the one fenced in with hate. Hate is a powerful emotion and the fact that becomes their only emotion that gets them what they do not deserve. Belonging.

I was listening to a podcast this morning — might have been the Bulwark? — but it got me thinking about GOP white men being extremely lazy. They noted that Kamala Harris prepped a great deal for the debate and it showed. She was ready for anything. And she worked hard for that. And Trump just showed up and thought he could wing it.
And the lies about Haitians in Ohio are totally undermined by the factory owners who noted that they are great employees. They show up on time and work hard and are responsible.
It occurs to me that, in my high school and college years, I observed that dynamic a lot: the girls put in a lot of work. Didn’t procrastinate, made flash cards, took notes, made study groups. Some of the boys did, too, but plenty of them also fucked around. Meanwhile, it was part of overachieving girl culture to study a lot and it showed up in grades and results.
Meanwhile, I have also observed a staggering immigrant work ethic in my life. And at lots of the most physically demanding and boring jobs….. cleaning and maintenance, nursing, construction, landscaping. It blows my mind. And then I hear from contractors that they can’t find local employees who can pass a drug test.
Where I’m going with this: I think Republican white men are lazy. I think they got used to phoning it in. They are drowning in resentment that they are outworked.

@HumboldtBlue: That was not my experience throughout my ministry. Having performed close to 200 weddings over 40 years, it used to be that the number one factor in marriage was propinquity, which is a fancy way of saying proximity. In my first parish in a small community 25 miles east of Pittsburgh, I had a pair of brothers married to twin sisters!
There’s an Internet meme that responds to the idea that “there’s plenty of fish in the sea,” with pictures of all the grotesque fish. A century ago, if you wanted to get married, you took the blob fish, because that were your choices in the community.
The Internet has created an enlarged world of propinquity, so that the blob fish doesn’t stand a chance. In fact, on many dating sites, a man of average attractiveness hardly gets any attention. In fact, we may be reverting to the situation where some men effectively have harems and half the men get excluded from the gene pool.

@Suzanne: Laziness isn’t really a thing. The whole concept is reductionist pejorative, and a racially tinged one, especially in this country.
Pretty much no one refuses to put in effort for no reason. Assuming you’re not dealing with something like depression, CFS, or ADHD, a large part of the reason why you see behaviors like that is because the people in question are prioritizing a different set of values, often because they have different incentive structures than you, but they’ll put tremendous effort in accordance with those values.
So lazy mostly becomes a way of condemning other people for not behaving the way the speaker thinks they should, which is generally bullshit.
The more accurate analysis in this case is that incentive structure for white men has been broken for a long time, and it’s only just starting to have consequences for them. The white men who can’t adapt, or are being told they don’t have to adapt and who buy into that are going to get run over by it, but it’s not because they’re lazy. It’s because they’re being told, for the first time, that they don’t just get to get all the stuff for being white men. They have no cultural context for having to do work. They have no practice with it. They have no skill at it. And they have very few people who can teach them how to do it well.
Everyone else had no choice in the matter. So they got good at it.
It’s just like the incredibly smart students who can glide through highschool without effort. When they hit higher level college classes they have no established study skills because they never needed them before. It’s not that they weren’t willing or able to put in effort, they just never had any practice with it so the skills aren’t there. You can’t instantly develop them either when you run into a situation like that, no matter how smart you are. The adaptation is inherently painful.
Much of whether a person is able to get through that is more about their tolerance for discomfort and pain, and their access to effective education on how to deal with the situation than it is about a lack of willingness to engage in effort broadly.

@RevRick: We may be reverting to the situation where some men effectively have harems and half the men get excluded from the gene pool.
Also, this was not a thing. Harems are not some natural default state. If you want to look back at a little tribe of hunter gatherers, they could have said “Well Og is the strongest hunter, so all the ladies will sleep with Og and no one else.” But that’s not what they do. Most dudes in the tribe get to marry, unless something is throwing off the sex ratios and there are no women. Quite often, you have monogamy. Or serial monogamy. Or everyone sleeps with whoever and everyone raises all the kids. Or mild polygamy, where most men have one wife but a powerful man might have two.
Harems are occasionally seen after you have invented a state to concentrate economic and political power in the hands of a few. It’s the monkey with a big pile of bananas.

@Suzanne: Except that’s bullshit. The reason why there’s a failure to adapt is not laziness, and calling it that shuts down any conversation about what’s actually going on or how to fix it.
There’s a permission structure telling these people they don’t and shouldn’t have to do that adjusting. And for the ones that want to, there’s a lack of support structures, inadequate modeling from role models, not enough presentation of alternatives to what they’re running face first into and don’t know how to deal with. So maladaptive responses, like drug use, become endemic.
This is a cultural problem, not a lack of effort problem. It’s solvable via cultural means. We don’t need to dismiss everyone struggling to do it when we could be helping to make the changes necessary to lead more of them to better outcomes.
Suzanne

@Eolirin: I think this isn’t the true laziness at the heart of the problem with white men. As far as jobs, sure there are white men who would do just about anything other than working in the field like a Mexican person might be willing to do, but that’s mostly because working in a field really sucks. And white men have less terrible options.
But the white men that are the real problem aren’t so much poor white men as white men working class and above. And where their laziness is most prominent is in the home. And that is laziness- refusing to do your share of the chores is inexcusable. Unless they’re rich enough to hire someone (rare!) someone in the house has to do them. That’s the real appeal of MAGA- not letting women get ideas about sharing housework. At least that’s the way I see it.

@lowtechcyclist: If the problem is ‘laziness’ there’s no need or even means to provide support to get someone to the other side of the problem. They’re lazy, and this is a personal and moral failure so we can dismiss them out of hand.
If the problem is pain is hard to deal with and there’s inadequate support for doing so there’s a ton of ways to help people get to the other side of the problem though.
The distinction is of significant consequence.
Starfish
@RevRick: Men are not entitled to sex with women.
The 40 yo divorced dads who want to search the internet for lovely ladies between the ages of 20-25 are not going to find matches, and they don’t deserve to. I mean, maybe if they are on a sugar daddy site where the women pretend to be their girlfriends for money, they can pull it off. But generally, women should have agency and be able to date people their own age, of their own choosing. And if women are not interested in dating men who are asking “Hey, what’s the big deal about removing your bodily autonomy?” this should be fine.
Suzanne
@Eolirin: I guess I’m not really understanding what you see as a distinction. If one is not changing — not working harder — because of a permission structure….. that’s that person’s shitty values at work, and it manifests as less discipline, less effort. In short: laziness.
And I don’t really necessarily buy the lack-of-role-model thing. Men in high school and college who aren’t doing as well as their women classmates can look to them as role models. White people could choose to look to those Haitians in their community as role models. They don’t do that because they have a toxic attitude of entitlement.
I worked on a job a few years ago where the superintendent was a drunk. He found a bar close enough to the project site that his radio was within range, and he was sneaking off and getting shit-faced. One day, while he wasn’t supervising and was instead getting wasted down the street, the steel guys had an accident and dropped a column. Thank the FSM, no one died. I have absolutely no problem calling that motherfucker lazy. There’s no culture that told him that was okay. His problem is not a lack of role models.

@Eolirin:
So you’re saying ‘laziness’ is an unalterable characteristic, like brown eyes or being left-handed, rather than something that there are degrees of, and something that one can change about oneself.
Gotta admit, I’d never seen anyone say that before.

I got one C in college, and it still stings. And that was 35-36 years ago.
I read about the Taylor Swift workout. Mainly I read that people who thought that they were in decent shape couldn’t come close to finishing it.

@Baud:
I was wondering that too.

Nah, we’ve got butch lesbians for that.

@Frankensteinbeck: Laura Loomer is having the time of her life, “living the dream” as they say. She strikes me as a mentally unbalanced person who has made the crazy work for her. Loomer flopped in her one run for Congress and Florida Republicans tagged her then as a crackpot. She was unemployable within the political world, and she might even have been unemployable in the world at large.
But like others before her, Loomer found her grift in Trump World. I don’t know that Loomer and Trump have a romantic relationship, but whether they do or not I think someone’s gonna have to buy her off somehow.
There is reporting* that last year, Susan Wiles refused a request by Trump to put Loomer on the campaign payroll, but Loomer has the intensity of a stalker and she got close to Trump anyway. Now, Wiles and LaCivita have to steer the ship into battle with a loose cannon careening around the deck.**
* This is from one of the 7 Daily Mail articles about Loomer that I skimmed Saturday. They were all posted in the preceding 36 hours, with headlines like “Looming Crisis.” The writers purported to have gotten various pro-and anti-Loomer partisans within— or adjacent to— the Trump campaign to tear the other side down, off the record. There was similar reporting from a few other sites a few weeks ago, not about Loomer but featuring the same back-biting and animus.
** I can see it now: Suzie Wiles straining at the wheel, steering through heavy seas; Chris LaCivita screaming at the gunners to maintain fire. Wiles shouts at the new first mate,”Lieutenant, you must get that cannon secured!” Corey Lewendowski answers, “Make me.”
Meanwhile up on the quarterdeck, Captain Queeg-Ahab paces back and forth muttering about edible pets and stolen strawberries.

@HumboldtBlue:
Gawd I regret taking three years of Latin in high school rather than Spanish!

@Suzanne:
My problem with French was speaking it. I could read and write in French. But my high school French teacher was an immigrant from Italy with a still-strong Italian accent. So my French pronunciation was abysmal, basically just like my high school French teacher’s. 😮😄

@Suzanne:
Not to give anything whatsoever to ShitForBrains or his followers but way back when I was in elementary school (Easier to use decades than years….) women of most any age – in this country at least were not given a lot of room to do more than housewife/mother. That changed with my generation – slowly but it started about that time. Who here remembers some of the early TV shows where mom did housework and cooked, while the man worked. That was a reality – but. A lot of the people that built the military equipment in WWII were women. Doing all the jobs that they couldn’t do because they were women. Build airplanes, machine metal, weld stuff, etc. Turns out of course that they were equal or better at it than a lot of men, mainly because they got taught rather than just stand there and watch. There wasn’t time to take it slowly, they had to be taught and then do the work. And funny thing for the other half of humanity, they did. This concept that women were housekeepers rather than human took a fair bit of time to overcome – and likely hasn’t completely but my parents lives and those that came after did change and change a lot. And humanity is better for it.

@lowtechcyclist:
Unalterable in this case means that how do you change the mind of someone who has decided that laziness is not their fallback but their normal concept of human life? Punishment? Bribery? I saw some like this in navy boot camp and it could forceable fixed short term but to be turned into a functional adult person takes time and a lot of work, and desire on the part of the less functional human. Boot camp could/would get their attention because everyone else as well as them suffered for their bullshit. So there was a lot of force of some type or another and if that didn’t work they could be put in the asshole company that physically worked a lot harder than a normal company. It didn’t seem to happen often, normalcy won out most often but it was possible to have to pay a pretty big price for being a renegade.

@Frankensteinbeck: Also Loomer, and many other Trump controversies, are taking the focus off Project 2025, Plan 47, and abortion bans, among others. It would be great for Harris, Walz to bring the focus back. We’ve had some laughs at the idiocy and conspiracy theories. It’s time to turn up the heat. We can do both.

@Geminid:
Whenever you restrict a group of humans to far different than the routine and activities that they want to do you have issues. This what boot camp in the military is for, to remind the “You can’t make me do anything crowd,” that one can be made to do a lot of things they do not want to do. And doing what and how to do it that as one is told is one of those things and a big thing in the military. A few fellas had a hard time learning that. But they did. Easy way or hard way are the only choices in boot camp. The hard way is not fun in any way shape or effort. The easy way is just bit easier.
the pollyanna from hell
I never argued with the notion that I do not merely have a low clerical aptitude, but that I also have a character defect called laziness. Only recently have I begun to wonder whether it should be called neuro-divergence.
Citizen Alan
@the pollyanna from hell: Personally, I believe there is virtue to be found in laziness. It is a slur often used against people who don’t have the patience to do pointless busywork or to continue using inefficient processes just because “that’s always the way it was done.” I someone calls me lazy because I don’t want to do The Thing, it’s probably because I don’t consider The Thing to be worthy my time and energy and no one has given me any reason to think otherwise.
Anyway
@HumboldtBlue: No “walk-off” in espanol?
that was a great home series…

@HumboldtBlue: being surrounded by smart women is one step toward getting laid. This will only work if said young men also treat the woman’s intelligence as a welcome quality.
I did experience a few less intelligent guys try to put me down and make me feel stupid, to even the intelligence down to their level. It was entirely disgusting and disrespectful, and did not lead to getting laid, but to a very quick loss of interest.
I did also have a smart classmate tell me I couldn’t get dates because you could see my wheels turning. In high school I wasn’t quick enough w a come back, but I thought to myself, isn’t that standard equipment? And didn’t you meet me in advance algebra and 2nd year science courses at our high school? Wtf
