Here’s racist-ass Rich Lowry on racist-ass Megyn KKKelly’s “show” saying the N-word with the hard R. That’s not a word someone accidentally blurts out unless they use it on a regular basis. And knowing who he is, that tracks. pic.twitter.com/nXswy6pKFg

Well, he wouldn’t have been my first bet, but the National Review editor who became internet famous for sharing his excitement that ‘I think Sarah Palin just winked at me, through the tv!’ got caught on video explaining (to professional bigot Megyn Kelly) ‘… Only two Springfield residents calling to complain about Haitian [N-word]… ah, migrants taking geese from ponds… ‘
(MAGAt response is that he said ‘migger’, but both #RichLowry and #HardR are currently trending on Twitter.)
What’s actually interesting about the discussion, IMO, is that the professional Wingnut Wurlitzer has decided to double down on the ‘Americans are worried about their pets, their dogs and cats, but not the geese, ha ha ha!’

Lee Atwater would be *very* disappointed in Lowry’s slip of the tongue.
I know Lowry had some attempts at damage control today, probably aimed at his media compatriots cuz lord knows the base of his party won’t think this “slip” is a bad thing.

Since this is an open thread, I have to recommend another great cover song to add to Medium Cool’s fantastic thread last night. It is EmmyLou Harris’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s Ballad of a Runaway Horse. Sorry I was unable to copy/paste the video which is beautiful. I guarantee that tears will leak out of your eyes. Leonard Cohen wrote a rhapsodic fan letter to EmmyLou about her cover.

Charlie Pierce refers to it as “America’s Oldest Journal of White Supremacy” for many, many good reasons.
I’m surprised nobody’s ever done a fake cover of it, complete with swastikas, bits on articles inside like “Hitler Raised Germany’s Standard of Living”, etc.

I despise Starbursts Lowry. Do you think it’s at all possible he heard the two recordings to police and one (or both) of the complaining callers used the N-word about Haitians “taking the geese” from ponds?
Mind you, this says that his “edit function” is minimal, but we knew that already from his published writings.
Elizabelle
We have no sympathy for Lowry, and it’s also delicious to think what might be going on in the FTF Vichy NYTime’s executive suites right now. Publisher AG “Putz” Sulzberger and Exec Editor Joe Kahn.
They keep giving Lowry real estate on their editorial pages. And this is how he repays them? Dropping the mask?
gene108
Migger?
Lame ass excuse.
I’d have gone with, “I was recalling the 911 call transcript about geese being abducted and that’s the word used and I screwed up and should not have done repeated it”.
But call transcripts like that can be obtained pretty easily, so I doubt Lowry even has that excuse.

@Lumpy: Franklin County, if anything; ODNR doesn’t do animal control, that is a county thing. And in fairness, the geese are getting to be a problem. Sometimes whole flocks of them take a mind to walk across a four-lane road, and they don’t walk fast. Mostly people stop for them, but I have seen drivers plow right through.
Elizabelle
Please to also remember. If we are talking about Lowry — and a story that is peripheral to the Haitians eating pets and geese story that Trump and GOP want us to focus on —
We are not talking about MVP Harris being endorsed by Scientific American. KKK trumps science.

@raven: Roman historians liked to recount the story of the Capitolene geese. Brennus the Gaul was besieging Rome ~367 B.C.E, but the Romans still held the Capitol hill. Then one night Brennus sent some good climbers to take the hill by stealth. The Roman watchdogs were asleep, but the geese alerted the defenders and the Gauls were seen off. The Roman nurtured their Capitolene geese flock with great care ever after.
This being a pet-friendly blog, I’m not gonna say what happened to the sleepy watchdogs, just that those Romans were some mean fucking people.

OT: The Nassau County GOP on Long Island, New York has invited trump to do a rally in the N.C. Coliseum Wednesday night. At the moment the County still owns the Coliseum so I do wonder if our tax dollars are paying for all the expenses for the rally. I’ll make sure I stay off the highways near it that night while all the idiots here go there.
The GOP County Supervisor, Bruce Blakeman, recruited “special deputies” aka armed civilians to deploy during disaster or unrest. I’m not aware of any protests that are going to be held there Wednesday cuz Blakeman has claimed in the past this “militia” will also be used for “riot control” aka democratic party protests.
And why is trump even doing a rally in New York? It’s still a solid blue state.

Is Rich Lowry one of those long, storied, “Conservatives” who wanted Nelson Mandela to know, if he thought “democracy” in South Africa was going to be some “one person, one vote” thing, he had another think coming? That was a Republican position that was quite well within the legendary Overton window of the day.
I never remember the source, but the gist of the punchline is, “the position of sound moderation during the Inquisition was that one oughtn’t burn *too many* heretics, and only the radical, outlandish people suggested one shouldn’t burn any.” Those Republicans, they *never got over* “one person, one vote”.
(NB: Remember, a lot of those Republicans were actually Democrats – aka dixiecrats. The South is such a bunch of sore losers, they wouldn’t vote for a Republican, because Lincoln (R) and Grant trounced the grossly inferior Jefferson Davis (JD?!) and Lee, until Republicans started the “Jesse Helms (R)-Acist” transformation. The deeper you dig into the history of racists, the more childish they become.)

@SomeRandomGuy: Virginia’s conservative Democrats didn’t wait for Jesse Helms to show them the way. Mills Godwin ran for Governor in 1965 and won as a Democrat; then Godwin ran as a Republican in 1971 and won again. The “Byrd Machine” backing Godwin switched parties with alacrity.
Back then, Virginia political power was centered on Richmond and that made the realignment easier. North Carolina’s politics were more decentralized so it took their conservatives longer to make the transition.

I used to have to read Lowry’s drivel each week as part of my job. Boring, predictable right-wing gibberish that it appears he dictated while perched on the Trump (not golden) throne.
SomeRandomGuy
@KatKapCC: Okay – got it. I found “just fell out of a coconut tree” to be adorably akin to my mom’s phrase for nonsense, “I might as well stand on my head and spit wooden nickels,” which made us children smother inopportune grins many a time – we’d have paid good money to see that
I also was reminded earlier this evening of the first time I saw two women cuddling, and suddenly started up and said, “oh, excuse me, I hope this isn’t too personal – are you girlfriends?”
“No.”
“But you *could* be?”
“Yes.”
“Oh. Okay. Cool.” And I sat back, curiosity satisfied. I swear, they must have been thinking “so, that night, he wrote ‘tonight, I met the wild Lesbian in her natural territory, a campus 2BR apartment'” but as I grew into the social circle, they learned, oh, they learned.
(I didn’t say they learned *differently*, mind you. Not entirely so.)
I really can be frightfully naive seeming, and *very* sheltered, since the whole, you know, never leave the house, can’t even have long conversations in text, that sort of thing.

@SomeRandomGuy: There was an active attempt to block people from using Kamala Harris’s coconut meme and switch them to using a lotus meme instead, plus make them socially pressure other people to do likewise.
Thing is, that’s the symbol of a hard-right Hindu political party in India, which I figure was the real reason for attempting it. Once that word got out, it kind of fizzled.
I prefer Kamala’s payload: same kind of thing, take control of a meme that can mean ‘white on the inside and not really black’ but tie it to a story where her Mom says ‘you think you just fell out of the coconut tree?’, and then Kamala explains, ‘You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.’
I think that’s really good, and taking away Kamala’s agency to contextualize it, forcing her to instead use the symbol of a right-wing Indian political party, is bad. Near as I can tell that’s what the coconut stuff was about.
SomeRandomGuy
@Chris Johnson: Ah, thank you, more context, much of which I’m glad I missed. I’ll love the coconut story, and just not display any coconuts nor any lotuses
Maybe she needs a Monty Python, Quest For The Grail meme – it would take the coconuts into an entirely new direction.
