Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Let there be snark.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Second rate reporter says what?

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

We will not go back.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Let's Check In on the Chaos

Trump’s assassination attempts aren’t going to be long-lasting stories primarily because discussion just how easy it was for this nutter, who had multiple prior gun charges, including possession of a weapon of mass destruction, to get an assault rifle and carry it around in Florida.   Trump can whine all he wants, and his surrogates can spread nonsense about how Democrats’ critique of Trump caused a registered Republican who supports a Vivek/Haley ticket to try to take a shot at him, but come on.  There’s no sane place on earth where this guy should be anywhere near a weapon.

Democrats’ desire to issue statements decrying violence don’t quite cut it (via Tom Sullivan):

Within minutes of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, the Unity Statements began to popcorn out.

Every Unity Statement is different, but there are certain stylistic requirements that a Democratic political figure knows to follow.

First, the statement maker’s spouse’s name should be included prominently somewhere: “Becky and I were sad to hear…” “Corey and I were deeply shaken by the news…” “Charlie and I join together…” The inclusion of the spouse is important here because it signals that this is a special kind of statement. More Christmas card vibes than political statement vibes. The normal rules are suspended. There will be no jabs here, no stridency, maybe not even any truth. […]

Third, a Democratic Unity Statement must mention temperature. Specifically, it should suggest that the temperature has risen too high. Though it may be Republicans who are overwhelmingly responsible for raising the temperature, planetarily and politically, in a respectable Unity Statement, this cannot be said. Instead, it should be argued that the temperature be lowered. Who knows how it got raised, and who really cares? And the Democratic statement maker must immediately volunteer to participate in the lowering of what they may have had no part in raising. […]

Here, though, are some of the problems with the Unity Statement as we have been experiencing it.

It places the burden of healing the country on those not responsible for wounding it.

It asks well-meaning, earnest people to stop doing what they never were doing in the first place, while all but conceding that the people who are still doing it will not stop.

It deplores crimes against the common good without being interested in perpetrators.

It exonerates the victim who is the object of the statement from any complicity they might have had in creating the conditions that led to the statement having to be made.

It elevates the promptings of politeness over the promptings of honesty.

It substitutes a vague idea of “coming together” for the urgent and vital work of stopping an ongoing campaign of sowing hatred, disinformation, distrust, and enmity.

As Josh Marshall put it, we all know Trump started this fire.  His campaign based on violence against opponents:  for example, Junior posted picture of a hammer and underwear when someone bashed in Paul Pelosi’s head with a hammer.  His campaign tells lies about immigrants that lead to bomb threats and school closings.  His party squawks and squeals at even a hint of an assault rifle ban.

Trump is going to have to follow his own advice and get over it, because his campaign and his party demands that we live in a world where it’s too damn easy to get a gun.

I think in time Harris Walz is going to have to deal again with an assault weapons ban.  She may have reassured voters in her first debate that no one is coming for their guns, but military grade assault rifles do not belong in public circulation.  Enough.

I guess Elon maybe learned something today that, as owner of a huge social media platform, he most certainly should have already known.

Reuters—  The Secret Service is aware of the social media post made by Elon Musk and as a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence,” a spokesperson told Reuters in an email. “We can say, however, that the Secret Service investigates all threats related to our protectees.”

The spokesperson declined to specify whether the agency had reached out to Musk, who seemed to suggest in follow-up posts that he had been making a joke.

“Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on X,” he wrote. “Turns out that jokes are WAY less funny if people don’t know the context and the delivery is plain text.”

Good job, Elon. Knowing the context of a “joke” about assassination makes all the difference.  Uh, huh. Hilarious.

NBC The acting director of the U.S. Secret Service said the agency needs to undergo a complete overhaul of how it protects presidents — a remarkable admission following a second apparent attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump within two months.

“Coming out of Butler, I have ordered a paradigm shift,” Ronald Rowe said at a news conference Monday, referring to the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. “The Secret Service’s protective methodologies work and they are sound, and we saw that yesterday.”

But, he added, “we need to get out of a reactive model, and get to a readiness model.”

Rowe did not go into detail about his vision for the nearly 160-year-old agency. His comments come at a pivotal moment for the Secret Service.

What!? You mean the Secret Service hasn’t been in a readiness model?!   WTAF?  This is actually quite disturbing.

It’s perfectly clear what he said and meant.  “Funny” how this thing (which I certainly don’t want to happen nonono!) hasn’t happened, huh?  Isn’t that … odd?  That it hasn’t happened?  Why hasn’t it?

As Josh Marshall put it, we all know Trump started this fire.

    But he didn’t.

    WaPo – July 1995:

Shortly after taking charge of the House in January, Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) promised the National Rifle Association in writing that no gun control legislation would move out of committee or on the House floor as long as he is speaker.

Evidently confident of his grip on the House with its new Republican majority, Gingrich made the pledge in a Jan. 27 letter to the NRA’s chief lobbyist, Tanya Metaksa. A copy of the “Dear Tanya” note was obtained by The Washington Post.

    NewYorker.com (from March 2014):

Just another morning’s work in the life of a modern G.O.P. leader. But before moving on, it might be worth asking what Coburn did to earn his award from the N.R.A. The Web site ontheissues.org has provided some of the answers: He voted no on banning high-capacity magazines holding more than ten bullets, the sort favored by the mass murderers in Aurora, Newtown, and other places where innocent Americans have met an early and gruesome end. He voted yes on prohibiting certain lawsuits against gun manufacturers. He voted in favor of bills allowing gun owners to carry their weapons across state lines, and allowing guns in national parks. He voted to amend the law so that the government couldn’t take a person’s firearms away because he or she had been deemed mentally incapacitated or incompetent; the government also had to persuade a court that the person was dangerous.

McConnell has taken practically identical positions. In 2008, he received a “Defender of the Constitution” award from the N.R.A., which has announced it will support his reëlection effort. But that doesn’t mean he’s home free. Bevin is supported by the Gun Owners of America, an organization that is even more extreme than the N.R.A., and his likely Democratic opponent, Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s Secretary of State, is also making a play for gun lovers. Shortly after McConnell’s appearance at CPAC, she tweeted, “Someone tell @Team_Mitch that’s not the way to hold a gun. KY women do it better.”

Saying it’s all Turnp’s fault lets the rest of the monsters off too easy.

It doesn’t cost anything to say “there’s no place for political violence; we’re happy the guy didn’t succeed.” It won’t change any views; it won’t feed the mania of the gun nuts; it won’t distract voters from the vital business at hand – namely turning out as many voters as possible to vote the monsters out.

    Eyes on the prizes.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

OT: The Nassau County GOP on Long Island, New York has invited trump to do a rally in the N.C. Coliseum Wednesday night. At the moment the County still owns the Coliseum so I do wonder if our tax dollars are paying for all the expenses for the rally. I’ll make sure I stay off the highways near it that night while all the idiots here go there.

The GOP County Supervisor, Bruce Blakeman, recruited “special deputies” aka armed civilians to deploy during disaster or unrest. I’m not aware of any protests that are going to be held there Wednesday cuz Blakeman has claimed in the past this “militia” will also be used for “riot control” aka democratic party protests.

And why is trump even doing a rally in New York? It’s still a solid blue state.

And:  Trump is a vortex of ugliness who urges violence.

I do worry that Musk’s widely spread tweet might have reminded some a-hole that Kamala and Tim are out there, too.  Although, they might be harder targets, being that they listen to their security staff.

@Elizabelle: I suspect that if there’s any reason aside from bad luck that Trump’s been targeted by the high-profile assassination attempts, it’s simply that Harris doesn’t take foolish risks and is better protected, so the plots don’t get far enough to make the papers. People try to kill high-profile politicians and candidates all the time. I recall they gave Barack Obama Secret Service protection unusually early, when he was running, because he was getting so many threats.

Donald Trump could’ve met Kamala Harris 4 years ago, but he refused to attend the inauguration. That’s because he refused to admit he lost. That’s why she had to introduce herself at the debate. They never met before. So no, no invitation to the White House will be forthcoming.
