Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

He really is that stupid.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

You cannot shame the shameless.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Let there be snark.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Is this getting much play?  It was bad enough when he screwed with the satellite system in Ukraine.

The guy gets away with everything, including undermining democracy.

So fucking frustrating!

A reminder that @elonmusk is a contractor for DOD and the US Govt and has said things that would have gotten anyone kicked out of the military. He needs to stop, or the govt needs to treat him equally to everyone else. Being rich doesn’t put you above the law. pic.twitter.com/WwN2opJX0j

John Roberts sounds delusional. Not insane or hallucinating. But so out of touch, so high on his own supply, so deep in a bubble that Roberts—per this NYT report—thought his awfully reasoned, wildly un-American immunity ruling would be well received by the public and history.

Seems like a good thread to share my “I saw my first cybertruck” story:

This past weekend, I was driving by a park where they were setting up for a car show.  As I was driving by, I was passing a long line of classic cars waiting their turn to turn into the park.  I was admiring the line and then there in the line was a cybertruck.

A frequent comment I’ve read from people is that they are stunned by how ugly it is.  I can assure you, the initial impression is not helped when it is surrounded by classic cars.  I literally burst out in laughter.

In the November election, the U.S. faces two futures. In one, the new president offers the country better prospects, relying on science, solid evidence and the willingness to learn from experience. She pushes policies that boost good jobs nationwide by embracing technology and clean energy. She supports education, public health and reproductive rights. She treats the climate crisis as the emergency it is and seeks to mitigate its catastrophic storms, fires and droughts.

In the other future, the new president endangers public health and safety and rejects evidence, preferring instead nonsensical conspiracy fantasies. He ignores the climate crisis in favor of more pollution. He requires that federal officials show personal loyalty to him rather than upholding U.S. laws. He fills positions in federal science and other agencies with unqualified ideologues. He goads people into hate and division, and he inspires extremists at state and local levels to pass laws that disrupt education and make it harder to earn a living.

Only one of these futures will improve the fate of this country and the world. That is why, for only the second time in our magazine’s 179-year history, the editors of Scientific American are endorsing a candidate for president. That person is Kamala Harris.

Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski issued the missive on Facebook Friday, referring to the vice president as a “Flip-Flopping, Laughing Hyena.”

“I say … write down all the addresses of the people who had her signs in their yards!” Zuchowski wrote. “Sooo … when the Illegal human ‘Locust’ (which she supports!) Need places to live … We’ll already have the addresses of their New families … who supported their arrival!”

@WaterGirl: My understanding (and I should be corrected if I’m wrong) is that the same Supreme Court that made this awful immunity ruling a few months ago will be the arbiter, after the fact, of which actions by a president are “personal” (and not protected by immunity) and which actions are “official” (and are protected).  Obligatory sports analogy: The referees have decided that under certain circumstances players can hit other players with lead pipes — and those same referees will decide (after the fact) exactly when this will and will not be allowed.  Not corrupt at all.

Open thread, so I have a question. We are leaving in a couple of days to visit some friends in Wenatchee WA. We are flying into Seattle and renting a car to drive to their place. They moved there from Ohio a few years ago and this will be our first visit to Washington ever.

We mentioned that we were going to take just a little time, half a day, to look at Seattle before driving to their house. However I was surprised when he warned us about Seattle having gone way downhill recently. He said there was a lot of open drug use – meth and heroin, trash and even human excrement in places. This is all things he said he observed personally, not something he saw on Fox. Not that he would watch Fox, I should mention he and his wife are reliable liberals. He said the police don’t seem to care and don’t do anything.

First time I heard any of this, other than the wingnut claims that the entire city burned to the ground. Any comments from folks in the area on this?  Thanks

Speaking of billionaires, they want you back in the fucking office ya lazy gits!

Amazon is ending its hybrid work policy and ordering staff back to the office five days a week.
The change will go into effect in January, boss Andy Jassy said in a memo to staff announcing the new rule.
He said he believed the move would help staff be “better set up to invent, collaborate, and be connected enough to each other”.
Mr Jassy has long been known as a sceptic of remote work, but Amazon staff were previously allowed to work from home two days a week.
The company’s push to get its corporate staff back into the office has been a source of tension within the company, which employs more than 1.5 million people globally in full- and part-time positions, including hundreds of thousands in office roles.
Staff at its Seattle headquarters staged a protest last year as the company tightened the full remote work allowance that was put in place during the pandemic.
Amazon subsequently fired the organiser of that protest, prompting claims of unfair retaliation, a dispute that has been taken up with labour officials.
In his message on Monday, Mr Jassy said he was worried that Amazon – which has long prided itself on preserving the intensity of a start-up while growing to become a tech giant – was seeing its corporate culture diluted by flexible work and too many bureaucratic layers.
He said he had created a “bureaucracy mailbox” for staff to make complaints about unnecessary rules and the company was asking managers to reorganise so that managers are overseeing more people.
Amazon said those changes could lead to job cuts, which would be communicated at the team level.
In addition to returning to the office five days a week, the company said it would bring back “assigned desk arrangements in locations that were previously organized that way” including its US headquarters.

If nothing else, revoke Elon’s security clearance and prohibit him to from any contact with the company, as well as require the company to get a new CEO who’s not a security risk.

Nationalization has been accomplished in our recent past.

The U.S. assumption of a controlling interest in General Motors Corp. isn’t the first time the government has nationalized a company or an industry. It has taken shares in banks, railways, steel mills, coal mines and foreclosed homes.

Most nationalizations were during wartime. But the current financial crisis has generated more than a few.

Last year, the government took effective control of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

It stopped short of nationalizing insurance giant American International Group, but forced a major restructuring and leadership change with a $180 billion taxpayer bailout.

Nationalizing Twitter, aside from First Amendment issues, sets a dangerous precent—much as I enjoy fantasizing about Biden seizing Elon’s assets, deporting him, and then pointing to the SCOTUS decision to tell Republicans to fuck off because there’s nothing they can do about it.

That said, I’d love to explore ways that Elon is also forced to step away from running Twitter, especially if that means he’s arrested for being a Russian asset. A girl can dream.

Regarding the airport they could take the Link Light Rail from the airport to Westlake Station and walk to Pike Place and the Waterfront then go back to the airport or arrange to pick up the rental car at one of the big downtown hotels like the Westin, Sheraton, or Four Seasons.

*Meeting the apparent Trump assasination attempt suspect*

I met Ryan Routh in Kyiv in April 2022.

He had been protesting in the famous Maidan square in the Ukrainian capital and was seeking media coverage.

I don’t know if his views have evolved since, but here are some observations based on our fairly extensive chat back then:

He strongly supported US hegemony and interventions.

He believed American values should be spread to the world, by force if neccesary.

He was virulently anti-Putin and anti-Russia.

He believed the West had betrayed Ukraine.

He wanted full-scale invasion of Russia and the use of nukes of neccesary.

When asked if he understood the consequences of nuclear weapons use, he said that by supporting Putin, Russian civilians too had become legitimate targets.

gonna just rephrase that in the past tense. People who know how affirmations work will understand

The guy has been getting away with everything, including undermining democracy.

has been. Was. But now, let’s see how it might change

    (swear words 9-25,

or supply your own, like in that sweet moment Kamala paused, looking at that former president in the debate.)

@Dan B: I think any medium to large sized city is best visited by at least a two day overnight stay. Preferably without a car.

Though I haven’t been in years, I’ve enjoyed all my visits to Seattle, staying downtown, walking a bunch with occasional Uber. Fine museums, tours, happy hour oysters, excellent restaurants.

I read the same comments about Denver…good downtown restaurant review garners comments “like it’s safe to go downtown LOL” and the like. Lots of unhoused here too but those sort of comments have been around forever.

@cintibud: FYI If you take the Link Lught Rail from the airport it’s a short walk from the terminal to the station.  You’ll get seats since the airport is just the second stop.  You’ll avoid driving in traffic so will be downtown in 20 – 30 minutes and can walk to Pike Place in 10 – 15 minutes from Westlake Station or University Station (may be called Symphony Station soon).  From University, or Symphony Station you’ll walk past the Seattle Art Museum and turn right to walk a couple blocks to Pike Place.  You’ll need to figure out luggage storage but if you can get a car at the Sheraton, three blocks to the east of Westlake Station, they’ll be able to hold your luggage.  The Westin isn’t far.  The Four Seasons ( Four Seasons Olympic?) Is near University / Symphony.  Each of these hotels have taxi stands if you decide you want to store your luggage at the airport and take a cab instead of the Light Rail.  A couple hours at Pike Place and a walk down the new, elegant, hill climb to the waterfront and you’ve got an unhurried half day to get a sense of Seattle.  The sparking waters of Elliot Bay and the Olympic mountains are a bonus on sunny days.

@cintibud: Matt’s at the Market has fantastic food.  It’s on the second floor of the Corner Market Building.  The Pink Door is more Italian.  Both overlook the Market.  People love Anthony’s on the waterfront.  It’s next to the waterfront marina and loading for the immense Alaska cruise ships.  Downstairs is less pricey but look up their menus.  I am a certified chef and particular about food.  Matt’s has always impressed.

@BR: The NC Republican candidate for governor is certainly disgusting.  But the bad news is that the news about that isn’t getting out to enough of the people who need to know about it.

Glad that NCAAT in Action is doing just that, but we shouldn’t assume that because it’s clear he is unfit for office that the voters of NC are hearing enough about this.

@OHJo: If you have time after the weekend abd are taking the Light Rail it’s a few short blocks from the Columbia City Station to cute, very diverse, Columbia City with lots of local restaurants and shops.  It’s only five or six blocks but packs in a lot including a tiny park behind the PCC market and Carnegie Library.  The Cajun Restaurant is excellent if a bit noisy as is the Sardinian Restaurant La Medusa, dinner only for both.  Parking is available but you must pay.  Capitol Hill is interesting but with non-existent parking.  From the Light Rail Station it’s probably most interesting to walk South on Broadway or through Cal Anderson Park, next to the Station’s south side, to Pine Street.  To the east (left) are lots of shops and fun restaurants to 12th or 14th where they’re as thick as possible.  It’s also next to CHOP where the “city burned to the ground”  NOT!  There are lots of clubs in the area where Seattle’s Grunge and Punk scenes got started and continue in their new forms.

If you’re driving Gasworks Park at the north of Lake Union is wonderful on a nice day.  The floating bridges are unique and scenic but traffic and construction can take the fun out of it.  You’re probably better off driving along McGilvra from Madison Park to Lake Washington Boulevard (Olmstead designed).  At the south end is Seward Park, a peninsula with old growth forest. Along McGilvra you’ll pass homes of the timber, tech, and music barons, marinas, and restaurants like Daniel’s Broiler and Blu Water Bistro with fresh fish and views of Lake Washington – on the pricey side – the little market across the street has good sandwiches.  At Seward Park is Orcas Street which goes west to Rainier Avenue in Hilman City just a few blocks south of Columbia City.

One cautionary note downtown.  Third Avenue has some drug issues.  You’ll cross it from Westlake Station but not from University / Symphony. It’s just a block so just don’t walk up and down Third if you don’t know where the McDonald’s is.

@OHJo: I got thrown out of the University of Cincinnati after being one of two second year architecture students to be in an honors program to study with the architect who designed the Playhouse in the Park.  I loved the older houses and buildings and the tree lined hillside neighborhoods, Eden Park (Mount Eden?), Mount Airy, the train station, and more.  I didn’t enjoy being shunned by the school but it got me into great adventures with Chicago Gay Liberation – taking on the mafia and the Vice Squad and prevailing

    Thanks for the invite!

It is certainly true that an electronic message disappears entirely after it is deleted!

Only after corrective brain surgery on the millions who read it. And a purge of the internet. A link to example of the basic syntax for finding tweets/xeets for a user that have been archived: Ryan Routh tweets.
The format is javascript so a bit hard to read (js-beautify for linux users will pretty print it).

Why are all the former white South Africans, now American, so obnoxiously pro-Trump and so disrespectful of a possible Harris majority win? Here is JD Vance’s main benefactor, venture capitalist Peter Thiel giving his thoughts on what a Harris razor- thin close election win would mean? I only wish Nelson Mandela were around to give some of the benefit of his experience and wisdom in dealing with these totally oligeanious characters, he knew so well? https://x.com/jimstewartson/status/1835086489006621007

My partner’s siblings in Bellingham have called to find out if we’re okay

Which is kind of funny as Bellingham has its own issues. Any growing city does, of course, and right now homelessness is a problem all up and down the west coast.
