Just want to let you all know that I moved some posts around just now, because there are 3 things from yesterday that we want to be on the front page without making duplicate posts.
One is the post about OzarkHillbilly, because not everyone sees every post every day, so they should have a chance to read the post and say goodbye.
The second post is the announcement that the car magnets are available to for purchase on Cafe Press.
The third is the fundraising post – I don’t want to put another one up today, but yesterday’s is there for you to be able to be matched.
Open thread!

Speaking of Alaska, a poll taken there by Alaska Survey Research on September 11 and 12 shows Harris trailing there by only 47-42.
Harris’ chances to win Alaska are still slim, but Alaska media markets have to be pretty damn cheap compared to pretty much everywhere else, so it might be worth their dropping some loose change on. Especially given that if Harris did pick up Alaska’s 3 EVs, winning PA-NC-GA would bring Trump to just 267 EVs rather than 270.

Saw my first Cybertruck on the road yesterday. I was prepared for its ugliness, but what I wasn’t prepared for was how obviously useless it looks. Even though it’s big, there’s no way there’s enough room in the bed to carry much of anything, I can’t believe that the visibility is that good while driving, and those doors would definitely take off your fingers or the limbs of small children. For that kind of money, I’d either buy something a lot more fun or a lot more practical.

Week 5 with now 13 week old border Collie Daisy. We feed her all she’ll eat but she’s barely put on any weight. She’s grown for a pudgy round puppy to a long legged small dog. Had her in for her 12 week shots. Vet said she’s doing great. Started walking her in the woods down by the river. Big adventure so much to sniff. Getting independent. Used to be easy to walk her on a leash. The last 2 days she’s grown opinionated. Iet her run in the yard. She’s fast.

I hope the Harris campaign can add a few sentences to the 25k first-time home buyer credit in the stump speeches Harris and Walz are giving. I’m seeing a fair amount of skepticism about this from folks who are being knee jerk skeptics — typically 1) that it’ll just raise prices by 25k for houses and 2) “who’s going to pay?”. I think they could add something simple like “Lately Wall Street has been crowding the housing market, buying up houses and crowding out ordinary families. We’re going to level the playing field by giving a 25k credit to first time homebuyers so families can get that house they’ve dreamed of.”

Huh…Mrs. Fro got one of those ‘Postcards to Swing States’ today, reminding her to vote early. No postmark or machine marks, either (but there is a stamp on it).
Adding to the mystery:
1) She votes in every election, just like I do
2) We’re in VA…not exactly a swing state? Maybe it was on the list earlier this year but not now.
I’ll be interested to see if she receives 2 follow-up postcards (the official ‘Postcards to Swing States’ sends three per voter).
And if I get one, we’ll know something’s off. Trying to talk to me about voting is a complete waste of either party’s time ;)

Hezbollah doesn’t even have to comply with the UN Security Council resolution from 2006 that ordered them withdraw north of the Litani River. They just have to agree to a ceasefire and stop firing rockets into Israel.
But U.S. forces aren’t going to attack Hezbollah and Israel knows that. They’ll just try to shoot down Hezbollah’s larger rockets if they are heading towards Israeli cities, as they should in my opinion.

Is this more than the banal observation that so many systems in nature are nonlinear (aka “chaotic”), and hence their sensitivity to minor variations in initial conditions is enormous. So a tiny change that we make might have a big effect down the road. I mean, that follows directly from the nonlinearity of so much of physics.

Humans remain a mystery to me. My brother-in-law is a nice guy (really!), but politically he’s been an Angry White Man the whole time I’ve known him. He and my wife’s sister basically survive because (1) his mom got SS survivor benefits and so wasn’t tossed out of the house that the BiL and SiL inherited and now live in, and (2) SiL has a great teacher’s pension due to a strong teacher’s union. Over the decades, he’s never brought in more than a quarter of what she does until just two years ago, when he got a great union job after his previous (Republican) employer fired everyone who had been employed too long and was costing too much. The BiL loves his new job, loves the union, and loves the pay. So they now live a middle-class lifestyle and are flat-out just happier with life, all because of liberal initiatives.

@Kelly: Easy Walk Harness is your friend! The leash attaches to a martingale at the chest so when the dog pulls, instead of feeling resistance – which is so exiting to resist! – they’re pulled to the side, making it much less fun but without pain, humiliation or injury. If the dog hits the end of the leash hard enough, they will harmlessly spin to face you. I could carry my coffee in my leash hand, and even if Lucy hit the end of the leash, my coffee wouldn’t spill.
I used one for my current spaniel’s first three years, and she walks like a champ. We get occasional pulling but when she started, as a tyke, she’d pull so hard her front feet were off the ground.
I also trained her with a 25-foot lead attached to the end of her six-foot leash. I taught her directional commands with that. It gave her enough rope she felt she had some freedom but I was able to catch her when she stopped listening.
