Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

I want to start this off by reminding everyone that Mark Robinson (R-Self-Described-Nazi) is Trump’s guy. The Ferret-Heedit Shitgibbon endorsed the NC Lt. Gov. back in the spring, calling him “Martin Luther King on steroids.”* Robinson may be done (maybe not–Jamelle Bouie doesn’t think so) but he’s someone Trump and the GOP have celebrated; his only sin is getting caught. Were Trump to regain power (FSM forfend) Robinson is exactly the kind of guy who would fit right in to the new administration. Which is to say…

Let’s hang this around every GOP neck.

Mark Robinson, the controversial and socially conservative Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina, made a series of inflammatory comments on a pornography website’s message board more than a decade ago, in which he referred to himself as a “black NAZI!” and expressed support for reinstating slavery, a CNN KFile investigation found.

Despite a recent history of anti-transgender rhetoric, Robinson said he enjoyed watching transgender pornography, a review of archived messages found in which he also referred to himself as a “perv.”

Robinson denies saying any of this (and, I guess, hanging around a porn site assiduously enough to become a regular on the discussion board). But CNN has got him:

The comments, which Robinson denies making, predate his entry into politics and current stint as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor. They were made under a username that CNN was able to identify as Robinson by matching a litany of biographical details and a shared email address between the two…

[Robinson’s comments] were made between 2008 and 2012 on “Nude Africa,” a pornographic website that includes a message board. The comments were made under the username minisoldr, a moniker Robinson used frequently online.

Robinson listed his full name on his profile for Nude Africa, as well as an email address he used on numerous websites across the internet for decades.

There is apparently a ton of material. The article states that CNN isn’t publishing most of what they have “given their graphic nature.” Given what is included, I’m guessing this is a story that will keep on giving for a while. E.g:

…under the username minisoldr on Nude Africa, Robinson graphically described his own sexual arousal as an adult from the memory of secretly “peeping” on women in public gym showers as a 14-year-old. Robinson recounted the story as a memory he said he still fantasized about.

Only The Best People™

“I came to a spot that was a dead end but had two big vent covers over it! It just so happened it overlooked the showers! I sat there for about an hour and watched as several girls came in and showered,” Robinson wrote on Nude Africa.

CNN is not publishing the graphic sexual details of Robinson’s story.

You get the idea. CNN hits Robinson in particular for overt hypocrisy on transgender issues. Read the whole article, and expect new details any time.

Again, the point isn’t just that Robinson is at once a grotesque individual with terrifying political stands. It is that he was a GOP darling, an early and eager Trump pick, and would remain so were it not for inconvenient publicity.

I have a fantasy: that reporters covering every race of any import around the country ask the Republican to denounce and distance themselves from Robinson. Their answers matter much less than keeping this story in the public view. But a boy can dream, right?

*There’s no way to read that sentence that isn’t weird at best, heading rapidly towards grotesque.

This thread is open.

Trump’s very own Martin Luther King on steroids?

Robinson, who would become North Carolina’s first Black governor if elected, also repeatedly maligned civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., attacking him in such intense terms that a user accused him of being a white supremacist.
“Get that f*cking commie bastard off the National Mall!,” Robinson wrote about the dedication of the memorial to King in Washington, DC, by then-President Barack Obama.
“I’m not in the KKK. They don’t let blacks join. If I was in the KKK I would have called him Martin Lucifer Koon!” Robinson responded.

I know steroids prompt aggression, but how about self-loathing? This man, Robinson, hates Martin Luther King according to the CNN article.

Thought experiment: let’s say the GOP offers to pay one of us BJ commenters to help them with recruiting higher-quality candidates in future elections.

How would you phrase your recommendations so that they’ll actually consider what you have to say?

(Or would you just take the money and then tell them, “after carefully evaluating the situation…you’re doing just fine”? )

“Not my words” is what he is saying but he means “Not my words, just my recorded voice coming from my phone from my home’s bedroom!”

Bouie is correct that Robinson is down but not out.  A lot of undecided voters could decide that “I voted for a black guy for governor” means that they can also vote for a racist for President.  Permission structures for Republicans to vote for Democrats can go both ways.

Lucas Kunce has got game, he brought the words, he’s raised the money ($16 million without PACs, corporate or lobbyist money), he’s an actual populist, and he had a crowd of about 200 people in out-state Missouri.

And a little more of the family business has been under a microscope, too. From July:

A nonprofit   run by the wife of North Carolina’s lieutenant governor faces financial repercussions after the N.C. Department of Health of Human Services said it failed to comply with several program rules.

Yolanda Hill’s nonprofit, Balanced Nutrition Inc., owes more than $130,000 to the department, according to a review. Hill’s husband, Mark Robinson, is also a Republican candidate for governor.

The nonprofit helps facilities access funds from the Child and Adult Care Food Program, which is federally funded and provides reimbursements for meals to child and adult care centers, according to the program’s website.
After a 2023-24 review, the Greensboro-based nonprofit was sent a letter on July 24 outlining the specific deficiencies found, some of which were repeat issues from a 2022-23 review.

    And more from this month.

The embattled nonprofit run by North Carolina’s second lady has caught the attention of federal agencies.

Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s wife, Yolanda Hill, ran a now-defunct nonprofit called Balanced Nutrition Inc. The nonprofit falls under the Child and Adult Care Food Program, part of the NCDHHS’s Division of Child and Family Well-Being.

In July, the NCDHHS notified Balanced Nutrition Inc. that it had identified “serious deficiencies” and discovered that the nonprofit owed more than $132,000 in disallowances. Robinson has characterized these findings as a political attack.

Now, NCDHHS has confirmed that the Southeast Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service asked the department to “provide documentation associated with the Notice of Serious Deficiency and the OIG complaint received related to Balanced Nutrition, Inc.,” according to a statement.

NCDHHS says it had sent the Notice of Serious Deficiency to the USDA per federal regulation, but it “has not referred this matter to any other body.”

The Robinsons have declared that this is scrutiny politically motivated.  Because of course they do.

Don’t look now — MorningConsult TX poll shows Allred up by 1 over Cruz: 45 to 44. I’m guessing the GOP undecideds go to Cruz, given that this is Texas, but still — it’s going to cost the GOP a fortune to defend the state when they probably thought they could spend elsewhere.

Until about a month ago, the initial run of TV ads for Robinson were actually a very effective presentation of himself as a warmly likeable Charles Barkley kind of personality (Robinson bears a striking resemblance to Barkley), and as someone who grew up as one of nine children in a poor household and rose from that humble background to prominence.  If a viewer didn’t already know about Robinson’s political far-RW extremism, the ad could have disarmed them into believing criticism of Robinson was overblown partisan rhetoric.

Alas for Robinson, it seems his real outrageously extremist hard-edged self is already too well-known within N.C. for the ad to gull anyone into buying that image of Robinson, and about a month ago the GOP has turned to a hard-edged Willie Horton attempt to tear down Stein as “weak on crime, crime rates soaring, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants right here in NC!” etc. depicting Stein, Harris, and Biden in greyscale as a troika.

Today’s revelations move Robinson from a difficult sale to an impossible one – there’s a possibility some NC Trump voters may leave the governor’s race vote blank.

Again, I marvel at the hypothetical of a “What if this were a Democrat…” scenario. I’m starting to wonder if there is literally anything at all the GOP wouldn’t stand for. Even the things you think they wouldn’t, they would twist themselves into pretzels to do so. If a woman GOP candidate turned out to have had half a dozen abortions, they’d be like “Well she had a message from the Lord that those babies would grow up to be liberals, so it was justified” or something.

I would like to say something as an immigrant and a naturalized citizen. My family came here when I was a kid as refugees from Soviet anti-Semitism thanks to the Lautenberg amendment. We received food stamps, welfare and aid from HIAS while we were getting on our feet.

My parents were adults who didn’t speak English, who gave up their lives and careers for our benefit. My mom worked sewing clothes in a literal sweat shop and took night classes at computer school, while my dad traveled to Florida for odd jobs. All to claw into the middle class.

Stines allegedly walked into the judge’s outer office, told court employees and others gathered he needed to speak with Mullins alone. The two then went into the inner office, closed the door and those outside heard shots. Stines walked out with his hands up and surrendered to police. He was handcuffed in the foyer of the courthouse, the newspaper reported.

I am carving Pumpkin Gritty jack-o-lanterns this year.  What fuzzy stuff can I use for added effect adornment?

Gritty has been described as a 7-foot tall orange hellion, a fuzzy eldritch horror, a ghastly empty-eyed Muppet with a Delco beard, a cross of Snuffleupagus and Oscar the Grouch, a deranged orange lunatic, an acid trip of a mascot, a shaggy orange Wookiee-esque grotesquerie, a non-binary leftist icon, an orange menace, a raging id, and an antihero. He has been characterized as huggable but also potentially insurrectionary, ridiculous, horrifying, unsettling, and absurd; and …”

@kindness: The’re at least two things the more extreme forms of xianity offer the lifelong offender.

    1) Easier amnesty packet.  All you gotta do is “admit Jesus into your life” and you’re saved.  Whisper the magic name of the son of the boss to the bouncer and, badda-bing, into the eternal disco.  File this under Retirement Package?

    2) Better working conditions.  Some of the mushier forms of xian worship insist on more than the magic name, insisting on acts — actual effort! — alongside the whole flash the holy reborn card.  But extreme forms?  Faith is it.  Maybe some bench sitting conditions, spot of tithing.  Better still, some xians actually rubber-stamp the whole detest your neighbors lifestyle, so bonus points for sanctifying preexisting xenophobic / homophobic / misogynistic hobbies.  Nice bennies package for some.

@frosty: I was okay with the Statue of Liberty image, I just thought she looked a little like Rita Moreno.

@zhena gogolia: Feels like individual comments can be removed if they are over the line, or at least given a warning. I don’t understand why the whole post had to go, but again I realize it’s up to the person who posted it.

Where did they promote the Oprah event? Because there wasn’t that much active promotion of it that I found — I had to find it myself. It doesn’t seem they spared any expense in doing it, so I hope they promoted it to the right folks.

@BR: It was promoted on all of the campaign pages (FB, IG, etc), and I also saw it on a lot of affiliate pages, too. Plus, I got numerous emails from places like Mobilize.

I guess the next step is to remind NC Democratic voters to NOT BE COMPLACENT!

TCFG is at the top of the ballot and must be the Biggliest  Loser!

@KatKapCC: I didn’t see any of the comments, so I can’t even begin to comment on what happened with this particular post tonight.

But I can say that it can get really discouraging to have spent the time putting a post together about something you’re interested in or excited about or that you think it’s important, and then have someone pour cold water all over it, so to speak.

The times that it frustrates me are when someone in the first 5 comments criticizes something I’ve said, or the way I’ve said it, and sometimes that comment ends up setting the tone for the whole post, or no one ends up talking about the post itself because they are talking about whatever it was you said or did or presented “wrong”.

Most days I can let it roll off, but once in a blue moon I feel like saying “fuck you, you ungrateful bastards”, or, alternately, it would be “sometimes I wonder why I even bother”.

I don’t know if that’s what happened tonight, but there’s a peek behind the curtain of what it’s like sometimes.

I told y’all last nite Robinson was a problem in NC. It only got 10% worse. The republicans aren’t concerned about the porn or Nazi stuff. They are concerned this will drag Trump and other Republicans on the ballot down. This was always a concern after he won the nomination. Now they are pooping bricks. If Trump loses NC, there’s not really a path to 270. If the Republicans lose their veto proof majority in the House and Senate or either one they can’t keep doing the extreme things in our state and eventually that gerrymandering crap will break. It’s the whole ball game and Robinson’s going to be pressured to quit at 11:55 tonight but who replaces him is going to be in dispute. ballots are supposed to be mailed out tomorrow after the delay because of RFK Junior BS, and our Republican Supreme Court blatantly violating state law now do they try and violate federal law.
