Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Did he really call Trump a “lunchable” at the end?

Mark Robinson shows how easy it is for crazy people to manipulate Trump with flattery.

Trump didn’t care Mark was nuts—he endorsed him anyway because Mark said he was cool a few times.

The lesson here: if a novice like Mark can do it, so will Putin and our enemies. pic.twitter.com/04Ze9HQdDN

Is the idea that people will be able to eat Trump for lunch?  (not literally)

(Should I know who Isaiah Martin is?)

Just spent a wonderful evening with a roomful of Quakers, many of them dedicated, many-times-arrested activists. It was the premier of this film about non-violent activist hero George Lakey. He’s not just an old guy (now 86) who does marches. He’s a guy who has studied non-violent movements and has trained activists all around the world. In 2020 he became seriously convinced that we could be facing a coup, and began organizing to fight it using lessons from recent history on civilian populations who had successfully overcome coups with non-violence.

He and the people he’s mentored are now watching the next election and gaming out both election scenarios, what to expect and what to do about it.

I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York. https://x.com/CorbinBolies/status/1836970004756975970

Take a break from Trump with a poem by Plague Poems on Mastodon:

    Whenever I see a headline
    about how
    life expectancy keeps dropping
    I have to remind myself
    that this doesn’t mean people
    are expecting less from life,
    but that people
can’t expect to live as long,
    though I suppose
    for many of us
    our life expectancy is dropping
    in both ways.

Now it seems they’re trying to stretch that even later. Maybe women get to be considered adults after menopause.

@lamh47: As I’ve written here before, the problem with Haberman isn’t that she’s a naive stenographer or “fluffer.” If you read the stories she files, they’re usually along the lines of “Trump does X batshit insane thing today and is completely losing it.” The problem is that she sees herself as this detached, objective anthropologist and Mar-A-Lago is this primitive African village where she observes the strange natives and their ochre-faced chieftain in their indigenous surroundings, occasionally dispatching notes and observations about their odd rites and utterances back to the Oxford Explorers Club NYT. Consequently, her reporting is less about, you know, the fundamental threat of a straight-up fascist returning to the Oval Office, and more about what Melania’s assistants are gossiping about or how Trump threw a dinner service at one of his campaign staffers when they brought him bad news in a recent poll, and that this could affect his mood at a rally in Wisconsin later this evening.

Sort of like focusing on Hitler’s plans for Christmas this year with Eva Braun and burying the lede about his plan to kill everyone in the continuation on A21.

Yesterday was a pretty incredible news week. Here’s a recap:

    – VP Kamala Harris did a rally with Oprah, it was a hit!
    – Trump said anti-Semitic things to Jewish people at an anti-anti-Semitism event
    – Trump’s anti-Semitic endorsement who became the NC gubernatorial nominee Mark Robinson just got revealed as the Black Nazi who loves bisexual sex when he’s not preaching against LGBTQ people or getting one of his beloved golden showers while cheating on his wife with her sister, and he got caught on the AshleyMadison cheat on your wife website database
    – Right wing journalist Olivia Nuzzi revealed an improper personal relationship with RFK Jr. after New York Magazine suspended her.
    – Right wing propagandist Christopher Rufo also got caught in the Ashley Madison database looking to cheat on his wife, whom he admitted to being an undocumented immigrant from Thailand 2018 Facebook post after his years of supporting racial hatred against immigrants.
    – The House Republican impeachment machine got torn to bloody shreds in full view of the public, as did their brilliant idea of bringing the people who wrote Project 2025 on to testify

    This is fucking rich.

Tommy Frederick Allan, a Rocklin man convicted of one felony count of obstructing an official proceeding for his participation in the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, is now an instructor at Liberty Learning Ministries, a Christian education program run through The Family Church in Roseville.

Allan was one of thousands of protesters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 in support of former President Donald Trump, who believed the 2020 election was “stolen” from him when he lost to President Joe Biden. Allan climbed a wall to enter the Capitol and was one of the few insurrectionists to enter the Senate chambers, where he stood at the dais with a stolen American flag and other protesters, including the so-called “QAnon Shaman.” According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, he was released in May of this year.

Now, he is an instructor of art and photography in a classroom setting for 6th-12th grade students. The Sacramento Bee confirmed Allan and his wife, Hollie, both teach in the program. A “Mr. Allan” is listed on the website as an elective teacher for students in 6th-12th grades. An August 28 Liberty Learning Ministries Instagram post shows Allan standing in a classroom with “Welcome to Mr. Allan’s Class!” written on a whiteboard, with a caption indicating that the photos were from “Back to Liberty Night.” The school, which is privately funded and independently run, is a private membership association, and not accredited.

Children enrolled in the program are called “learners,” not students. The program website emphasizes that Liberty Learning Ministries is not a school — “it’s better.” “Learners” are taught in a “multi-age classroom” setting, and programs are offered for students from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade with the Abeka Christian school and homeschooling curriculum. “Liberty Learning is not accredited but provides a faith-based education that goes beyond the classroom and focuses not only on academics, but character, morals, and good citizenship,” the website states.

According to the program website, Liberty Learning Ministries is also “committed to medical freedom and no vaccinations, or medical records, are required to enroll.”

    Right behind you.

One eyewitness cited in the court filings, a young woman referred to as K.M., provided a sworn affidavit that claimed the teenage girl was naked, partygoers were there to “engage in sexual activities,” and “alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy… and marijuana” were present. The teenage girl was identified in the filings only as A.B.

“The discovery taken in this case to date reflects that on Saturday, July 15, 2017… Dorworth, hosted a party at his residence… with the following guests present: (1) A.B.; (2) K.M.; (3) B.G.; (4) Matt Gaetz,” lawyers wrote in the filing, also listing several others. The defense lawyers filed testimonies from those three women — who the attorneys say placed Gaetz at Dorworth’s house that night — under seal pending a judge’s approval to make the records public.

Additionally, Gaetz’s own ex-girlfriend — who was present at the party — provided testimony that lawyers say rebuts Dorworth’s claims that he was not there. NOTUS independently verified that Gaetz and one of the women who testified were previously involved in a relationship; she is only identified in the court filing by her initials, B.G.

The congressman’s ex-girlfriend’s 11th-hour testimony on Sept. 3 came just two days before Dorworth dropped his lawsuit, defense attorneys said in the filing. The defense lawyers also relied on Dorworth’s geolocated cell phone records, which showed that he communicated constantly with the congressman that day. The defense’s court filings show a hired digital forensic examiner identified Gaetz’s number, which has a Florida panhandle 850 area code and texted back-and-forth 30 times that day then called Dorworth twice in the hours before the evening revelry.“B.G., another attendee at that party, confirmed A.B.’s testimony under penalty of perjury,” defense lawyers wrote.

so… I’m sitting here well buzzed and lets try and sum up the day shall we?

PDiddy – charged, denied bail because he’s a flight risk and has at least 4 digits of baby oil at his disposal for his personal use, which apparently involves human trafficking and may or may not include minors.

Gaetz – New charges filed that place him at a party with naked underage women.  Looks like the DA has received affidavits from participants (including the underage girl) that place Gaetz at the scene with his girlfriend.

Nuzzi – admits to an improper relationship with a source from one of her article subjects (RFK, Jr) and has been suspended by her employer.  Expect this to rouse some buzzing from the punditrocracy as this will cause a circling of wagons and questioning of ethics in journalism.

Rufo – had his ass outed as signing up to Ashley Madison (the noted cheaters hookup site) at roughly the same time as the birth of his first child from his illegal immigrant spouse

Robinson – the NC GOP Gov candidate – outed as a purveyor of porn involving trans peeps, while also publicly stating that they are an abomination.  Also self described himself on a specific porn site as a Black Nazi.  Also wrote of encounters that involved him peeping on girls when he was in Middle school and a supposed affair/fanfic of fucking his own sister-in-law.  Also outed as an Ashley Madison client.  Bonus! the state GOP stands behind him!

Trump – Spoke to a GOP friendly Jewish group and then told them that if he doesn’t win it’ll be their fault for not supporting him enough

Vance – ran away from further questioning about his own statements and the Robinson revelations.

also too – Harris and Walz had great interactions today, Walz in NC and Harris on Oprah.

    Speaking of journalism:

“[Horace] Greeley’s Tribune and Greeley the tribune would rise together over the next 30 years, paper and person often indistinguishable. The Tribune would never be the newsgathering operation that Bennett’s Herald was, nor would it match the Herald’s circulation in New York City itself. Instead, Greeley would use the city as a platform from which to project an editorial voice outward, to the country beyond. By the eve of the Civil War, the Tribune was reaching a quarter of a million subscribers and many more readers across the northern United States, and Greeley was the most visible and influential newspaper editor in the country. He was, by his own description, a “Public Teacher,” an “oracle” on the Hudson, “exert[ing] a resistless influence over public opinion … creating a community of thought of feeling … giving the right direction to it.” This was the work of journalism.

The idea landed with many of the readers who received the Tribune’s weekly edition. They regarded it as they would their own local weeklies: written, composed, and printed by one person. Greeley, in their belief, produced every word. He did little to discourage such impressions, even as the paper became a strikingly modern operation with a corps of editors, armies of compositors and printers, and massive steam-powered presses. “For whatever is distinctive in the views or doctrines of The Tribune,” he wrote in 1847, “there is but one person responsible.”

Horace Greeley never quite fixed popular newspapers, or the society that spawned them. The Herald continued to thrive, Bennett continued to bluster, crimes and calamities continued to happen. But Greeley did change newspapers. In making the Tribune into a clearinghouse of information as well as ideas, he made reform-minded, opinion-driven journalism commercially viable, and invented the persona of the crusading journalist. For the next three decades, until his death in 1872, Greeley would demonstrate the power—and limits—of that model.”

The Smithsonian Magazine has a lot of excellent writing.

And we know it’s from the left, because they use the same dastardly tactic as when attacking Trump: They quote.
