Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

All hail the time of the bunny!

“It’s about killing a child because you’re not responsible enough to keep your skirt down!”  I think I’ll just say “fuck you, you total fucking pig” and leave it at that.

Our People, Class of 2022, Come On Down!

They were all new to the House in 2022, I believe, and they have already left their mark.   I am 100% sure that someone in the first 5 comments will tell me if I’m wrong, and that’s easier than googling to verify!  They’re smart, they’re fun, they’re fearless, and they have no collective memory of the “collegiality” that no longer exists.

Frost: Are you going after Tim Walz next week? I’m hearing from my staff that you’re planning a hearing on Governor Walz even though he has been Governor for five years and his name hasn’t been uttered in this room until he became the VP nominee

“James Hoffa, the former general president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, on Thursday night put out a blistering statement criticizing his successor, Sean O’Brien, for the union’s choice not to endorse a presidential candidate this election cycle,” the Daily Beast reports.

“Hoffa, the son of the legendary labor leader Jimmy Hoffa, called the decision ‘a critical error’ and ‘a failure of leadership’ on O’Brien’s part.”

He has not come off like an “affable black man.”  He’s been completely outside the black mainstream… just… forever. Loony Loomer is trying to make news again, insinuating the Harris/Trump debate was rigged:

A far-right activist and Donald Trump confidante claims to have obtained a “whistleblower complaint” filed by an ABC News employee with the Securities and Exchange Commission, alleging that the network rigged the debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in the latter’s favor. But the complaint is riddled with red flags that cast doubt on its authenticity, reporter James Surowiecki posted on X.

Specifically, Laura Loomer said the complaint alleged: “I have heard and observed conversations and have evidence in hand of ABC news, a wholly owned subsidiary of Disney Media networks, which is a division of The Walt Disney Company, collusion between ABC news (sic) and the Kamala Harris campaign for the Presidency of the United States.”

It is my belief from the context of the conversations, that ABC news in the debate held on September 10, 2024, and at other various times before and after this debate to influence the Presidential election,” the complaint continued. “I would like to emphatically state, that I am not a Donald Trump supporter and have never voted for Donald Trump … [but] I have sat idly by for years and watched the media on both sides of the political spectrum become nothing more than campaign ads for politicians.”

But key details of the alleged complaint, said Surowiecki, just don’t add up.

“Laura Loomer has the complaint the supposed ‘ABC whistleblower’ submitted to the SEC, and it is weird. I’m going to write something longer about this, but I’ll make one point: ABC News is not a subsidiary of ‘Disney Media Networks,’ and someone who worked at ABC would know that,” he wrote. “ABC was part of a division called Disney Media Networks until 2020, but Disney did a reorg that year, and ABC is now part of Disney General Entertainment. Again, someone high enough up at ABC to have been in on conversations with the Harris campaign would know that.”

“Another of the odd things about this complaint is that the whistleblower keeps referring to it as ‘ABC news,’ with ‘news’ uncapitalized. Again, that’s not something a higher-up at ABC would do,” he continued.

Loomer, a self-professed “proud Islamophobe” who has defended white nationalism, has become more and more visible alongside Trump at campaign events, even attending a 9/11 memorial with him despite having pushed 9/11 conspiracy theories.

TV down under shows many news shows from other countries – albeit probably later than in the home country. At the gym today I caught the “ABC News Tonight” with David Muir. It was not a good news night for trump. No each ways, just facts about who was doing/saying whatever. It included Kamala talking about the lass in Georgia who lost her life because of the draconian laws re abortion. I was pleasantly surprised because it was so different to what I read in the Washington Post.

Blogfather said it a while back: VP Harris came up in the early 90s in SF, when half the kids were nonwhite/Hispanic, and it shows.  There have been interviews with AOC where she’s said that she came up at a time when G(r)OPers were always the enemy, always the bad guys, and the idea of bipartisanship was ridiculous b/c the other side was always in bad faith.  And these youngsters here grew up in that tradition.  They know that there’s nobody on the other side to reach out to, it’s just a battle, a struggle, and until we win we can’t stop.

It’s great to see.  And I DGAF that supposedly we’re supposed to think of the other side as “friends”.  Just DGAF.  There’ll be a time for that, when MAGA, Trumpism, and Movement Conservatism have been buried alive and the screams die out.  Until then, these men and women know what they’re doing, and God bless ’em.

    Great voting news in Arizona!

The Arizona Supreme Court has ruled that nearly 100,000 voters facing questions over their citizenship documents can cast ballots on Nov. 5, with the chief justice saying they were “unwilling” based on the facts of the case to “disenfranchise voters en masse” from participating in state elections.

In the ruling Friday, the court found that the Maricopa County recorder and other county recorders lack the authority to change voter registration statuses to solely federal ballots, as those voters registered long ago, The Associated Press and Arizona Family reported.

“We are unwilling on these facts to disenfranchise voters en masse from participating in state contests,” Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer said in the ruling. “Doing so is not authorized by state law and would violate principles of due process.

Adrian Fontes, the Arizona secretary of state, declared on X: “We won.”

“No voters on ‘the list’ will be made Fed-Only,” he said. “Congrats team. Thank you amici. Now…let’s go have an election!!”

Stephen Richer, the Maricopa County recorder and a Republican, reacted on X as well, praising the ruling.

“AZ Supreme Court ruled for defendant (Fontes). The 100k registrants will continue to vote a full ballot this election. Thank God,” he said. “Thank you Arizona Supreme Court for your extremely quick and professional review of this matter.”

I watched her today on video, in the Dane County Coliseum, where I saw Eugene McCarthy fill the venue in ’68. And I thought: With whom should she be compared for eloquence and force as a speaker? And I answered myself: FDR, maybe.

@KatKapCC: it’s a strange division of labor. It’s been said that women bear the responsibility  for saying no, or managing birth control, for keeping our legs shut. It’s weird.

Most women, even if we end up with safe kind conscious partners, have been through the odd situations where we have to be in charge of all consent, and manage their anti consent behaviors. Oh I’m not saying this well. And it’s not to insult all the respectful kind men we know.

Right? I don’t think there’s any government entity a whistleblower could go to for something like that, right? Maybe the FEC? I’m not sure if there’s anything explicitly illegal about a private news org doing something like that? It’s all bullshit of course, goes without saying. The right knows Trump fucked up and won’t admit it, so they cry about the debate being “rigged”

Since it’s an open thread, anybody else looking forward to the new Ranma 1/2 anime remake that will be on Netflix starting October 5th? I’m reading that it will be a more faithful adaptation of the manga than the original 1989 anime was.

After being out of print for several years, the English manga volumes are now in stock on Amazon; VIZ apparently did a reprinting earlier in the year, probably in preparation for the anime remake. I plan on buying all 19 volumes as I read them for a complete collection and in preparation for watching the new anime. Have the first volumne being shipped. I’ve always liked Rumiko Takahashi’s stuff, so I’m excited. It wasn’t that long ago that the complete set for Ranma 1/2 went for like $700 on ebay

@Gloria DryGarden: there is that kind of double edged sword there, I’m not sure many guys want to be labelled as being guilty of assault/rape, so you don’t act with confidence and sometimes that can kill the moment.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): will be interesting to see how they do it.  I liked the original anime when it was out while the premise was somewhat unique, they way that it was used to drive the character based humor was good, although after a bit it started to feel recycled.

@piratedan: There is a universe of difference between “acting with confidence” and “not giving a shit about consent”. If a man “acting with confidence” gets him labeled as a rapist, guess what? That man is a rapist. You wanna know what “kills the moment”? Well, rape is way up on that list!!!!!

Stop acting like men are too stupid to understand what consent is and what it isn’t and why it matters. They know. But a good number of them simply don’t care.

I recall only watching up through the introduction of Ranma’s mother, Nodoka. So around 60 or so episodes in? I think I was only half way through the series. I watched it about 10 years or so ago, and think what you’re talking about can be attributed partially to “filler”. The anime was being produced at the same time as the manga, so the anime’s writers had to make up original stories to avoid overtaking Takahashi

Any comment on the anime series Please Save My Earth?

Sticks in memory decades later as not only unusual in its premise but thought provoking in its unfolding as well. Lovely music and songs, also too. Oh, and a nasty, nasty little boy (excerpt).

Sadly, the powers that be pulled the plug early and the rush to wrap it up some way, some how was mildly disappointing in comparison to what preceded it.

The gop party wants money, they seem not to be able to give 2 shits about anything else. They really do not care about the country other than making money off of it. They want to go backasswards to a time when the people didn’t have a choice about their government or themselves, only that the leaders got rich screwing everyone else.  They aren’t serious, look who they want as a leader. They are about power and money, not running a rational country. In my youth, seemingly about a bazillion years ago, they seemingly wanted a county that worked to their goals. Now their goals weren’t all that and a loaf of bread but their goal wasn’t to fuck over everyone for a few bucks. Now it is. It’s whiteish power baby, and this is from an old white man who thinks they should fuck off into the sun.

@Ruckus: Tangential to that, I just had a shower thought about the problem with Joe Biden: others have noted that he came of age, politically speaking, when Republicans were able to collectively come to the conclusion that Richard Nixon had gone too far, but his problem with dealing with the current political climate is that he’s essentially the last man standing from that generation of politicians. Most of our current-day politicians came of age later, when the influence of Reagan, Gingrich, W, Cheney, and more importantly Limbaugh, Hannity, and their ilk had come to prominence. (And Trump is included in that category – he may be chronologically of Biden’s generation, but his involvement in politics came much, much later.)

Biden remembers what the 20th-century Republicans were like, and even though he knows what the 21st-century Republicans have become, he wasn’t prepared for the long-duration cluster-bombing scorched-earth campaigning that the 21st-century GOP routinely engages in. That was his weakness, I think – that and having lost a bit of mental agility to age and the strain of properly governing the United States.

The new generation of Democrats – Crockett, Moskowitz, Frost, their compatriots, and Harris and Walz as well – came of political age in the new environment the 21st-century GOP created, so they don’t have to adjust to it.

Like someone said about Harris, she came of political age in a time when the California GOP had already gone insane.

@WaterGirl: I am glad you featured these new Representatives. Because the Democratic Class of 2022 entered Congress in the Minority, they have not been able to help pass momentous legislation like members of the Class of 2020 did. Nor have they had to stop destructive Republican initiatives in their tracks, as did the talented Class of 2018 when they stood with Speaker Pelosi.

Still, under the capable leadership of Ranking Member Jaime Raskin and his deputy Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Reps. Crockett, Frost and Moskowitz have used the platform of Government Oversight Committee hearings to make tbeir mark.

These three may not have been able to help pass ground breaking legislation, but they have helped maintain Democratic morale by making fools out of their Republican colleagues on a regular basis. If this Congress were to go on much longer, the hapless Comer would have to institute some sort of “Slaughter Rule” whereby the TV cameras got turned off after a certain level of Republican humiliation was achieved.

Fellow freshman Rep. Dan Goldman has played a comparable role in Judiciary Committee hearings.

But what about the other Democratic members of the Class of 2022? This Class totaled 31, including Mary Peltola who entered the House early by means of an Alaska special election. I believe many of them are as capable as Reps. Goldman, Crockett, Moskowitz and Frost, and some could prove even more so. Rep. Peltola comes to mind here,

Although, I expect Mary Peltola will be working at the other end of the Capitol building come January of 2029. That’s when her friend Lisa Murkowski’s Senate term ends and Alaska’s new Senator gets sworn in. In the meantime, Rep. Peltola will get a a lot done in the House. That woman is a doer.
