Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

The words do not have to be perfect.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

In after Baud. Damn.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

How stupid are these people?

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

If you look closely behind JD, a dozen eggs is $2.99 at the store he visited, not $4.

Jamelle Bouie is a good follow on TikTok and on Bluesky.  He has a new video out where he includes some of Trump’s recent rally rhetoric and compares it to a Dave Chappelle Klan rally sketch.  Trump’s ranting about immigrants is pretty much indistinguishable.  JD has decided to take the Platonic path of the noble lie to keep the rubes in line.   They’re hammering their lies as hard as they can, yet every poll I’ve seen shows Harris gaining ground, and her favorables are still growing.  Polling also seems to show that independents are rejecting the dog and cat eating stuff.

To put it crudely but simply:  wad, shot. So what’s next?  This is a serious question.  There are 44 days left, and one-trick ponies get pretty dull in 6 weeks.

If you haven’t seen Jasmine Crockett’s questioning of some clown brought in to claim (falsely) that no money has been spent on rural broadband, it’s worth a watch, but the last piece could describe the Trump campaign as well as most other Republican efforts:

The final thing that I will say is that this election is the best example of why y’all are so afraid of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Because then you can’t have a simpleminded, underqualified White man somehow end up ascending. Instead, you’ve got to pay attention to the qualified Black woman that is on the other side.

In addition to Trump, JD is also underqualified, and despite his Yale education, he’s simpleminded.   Trump just chickened out of a debate on 10/23 on CNN.  JD has way more discipline than Trump, but I’d bet that he won’t do the campaign any good in the VP debate, because he’s clumsy and robotic.

Panicking and trotting out the deeply racist shit that should be reserved for mailers sent, and ads aired, during the last few days of the election remains a stupid choice.

I think there is something to the idea that the goal was to come sort of plausibly close, and then rely on the courts and legislatures to hand over the victory to Project 2025’s front man.

It explains Trump telling his supporters they don’t need to worry about voting. (I am picturing this not as Trump masterminding anything, but as Trump being assured by those close to him that if he gets the same number of votes as in ’16, then they will have to make him president. Which he keeps repeating–it is his current proof that the last election was stolen, even though it is jaw droppingly stupid and not how elections work.)

I’m surprised Vance isn’t choosing to point to the price listed for caviar (fish eggs) while complaining how high the price of eggs is now. I suppose that it has dropped through the memory hole of how many days in 2020 under Trump when eggs (as well as toilet paper) were not available at any price at many stores.

Trump just launched a new commemorative coin ($100), a few days after he launched his own crypto-currency. This is not… normal for the nominee of one of the major parties a few weeks out from the election.

The only white men who actually benefit from the GOP are rich white men. Period.

Not a single poor white man actually benefits from anything the GOP does.

If they could ever bring themselves to realize this, they might actually find themselves standing to benefit from what the Democrats want to do for everyone who isn’t already rich.

at Kroger you can spend $4 on cage free eggs but the regular ones are $2.19. I guess conservatives are just buying the fancy products now, which explains why they’re perceiving so much more inflation than really exists.

IIRC there has always been a significant difference in price for store brand vs higher tier eggs. I know some locals were selling home grown eggs for 5 to $10 a dozen pre pandemic.

I think the pandemic and bird flu shortages cleaned a lot of the lower priced eggs off the shelves and drove up store brand prices, but it seemed like the higher priced alternative didn’t go up proportionately and have come back a bit. So the price difference became more compressed. That’s based on my anecdotal experience.

Safeway store brand large eggs are currently 3.49 a dozen. The premium eggs are $5-7, super premium $7-9. The non sale low end is about double what I remember pre shortages. The high end is maybe 20-50% higher than it was

ETA Kroger eggs here are running $3.69 a dozen.

It seems like they were a bit lower in general this summer

In an earlier world, say 30-40 yrs ago, the racists could easily be in charge. In today’s world they almost cannot ever be. We’ve seen shitforbrains in the WH. Many of us may not have learned a lot but we can learn from experience and what we have learned is that conservatives want to conserve a rather shitty side of politics, that of regression to the point that they might have had some power and there won’t have been much if any real diversity in the leaders of our government. A WOMAN president? My god man do you realize what it would mean if she was actually really good at being president? We might elect her for a second term or elect another woman. The “horrors” of that. We might have to ADMIT that women have brains, can fly into space, can actually run a country. And possibly be better at it than many of the men that have done it for every time we’ve elected someone. And they make up over 1/2 the population of this country. Talk about misrepresentation.

If you want eggs to last longer, don’t wash them and don’t refrigerate them. From the standpoint of the chicken, 2 or 3 or 4 bucks a dozen is a bargain. Hens should organize; they need a union. @Falling Diphthong: When Trump was running against Biden it honestly looked like he was cruising to a win. He said this dopey stuff because he thought he wouldn’t have to put in any effort.

That was the choice of Vance too. It was a spiking-the-ball choice, made at Trump’s highest moment in the whole campaign season, intended to make liberals cry and please his neofascist base. Nothing strategic about it.

@Eolirin: it’s a Breitbart interview – he’s not just talking to uneducated racists there.  He’s talking to the relatively well-off and extremely online RWNJs.  The ‘bubbliest’ of the FoxBubble.

Vance then called for MAGA Republicans to “destroy the universities in this country.”  Vance claimed universities have “too much money” and “power” and “don’t do anything good.”

“Destroy the universities in this country“.  Look at how insane and irresponsible just that one line is.  Not “reform” them, or “ask them to educate, not indoctrinate”, even.  Just “destroy” them.

He’s a bored elite who doesn’t like feeling badly about his prejudices, or just the fact that he has to share this country with others who don’t agree with his views.  So it’s “destroy them“.  Unreal.

@Eolirin: that’s one thing Jason Kander hammers on: people want their families safe, healthy, and NEARBY. That’s one cause of rural resentment. Their kids go away to college and never come back because there are no opportunities for them in rural America. They’re mad at college and city folk for taking their kids away rather than being mad at the forces that messed up rural America so there’s nothing there for them.

An early version of it would have taxed the breaks that graduate student TAs get on tuition (which is often theoretically most of their “compensation”) as regular income.

I explained that that would have crushed me when I was in grad school, and probably kill a lot of arts & sciences grad schools outright. The other person said something like “good! I’m getting sick of the universities, the students don’t do anything but riot any more.”

Last Saturday I went to my 50th high school class reunion here in in 70% Trump rural Oregon. I was a bit apprehensive but only one guy started running his mouth on politics with me. Stopped himself after a few minute of silence from the 3 people he was talking to. Really nice evening.

Yesterday afternoon we held a memorial gathering to reminisce about my Mom who passed away in July. Lots of old friends and relatives. The only hitch in it was one guy my age that was our next door when I was a teenager. He was wearing a hat with FU46 stitched on it. He didn’t say anything but I rather abruptly walked away when I figured it out.  A strange sartorial choice for for such an event.

I’d say it’s about even what any one person will do. People that thought they knew the speaker often do #1 because they can’t believe what they hear – or they agree. Some are not willing to do #3 because this is not the polite thing to say, but many see that and see that the person speaking is really not polite in any way, so why should they be.

    Is JD “creating stories” again?

Seriously, though.  When you look at the price of one specific product, it’s going to be up and down for a variety of random reasons.  Especially agricultural products which are subject to good and bad crops, diseases, etc.  Anyone who stakes their claims by cherry picking a single item is working a scam.  Look at the average across a wide range of products.  (Pssst that’s literally what the CPI is)

TL;DR- prices were up 2.5 percent from August 23 to August 24.   That’s slightly more than August 18 to August 19 (1.7%) and slightly less than August 17 to August 18 (2.7%).

    tl,dnr: egg price arithmetic pedantry

I can’t get over how innumerate and like he never buys groceries that he makes himself look.

Talking about the price of a dozen eggs when he’s holding two dozen, right in front of a sign that says the price of eggs is $2.99/dozen. That’s a roughly 25% overestimate over the actual price. And it looks worse b/c he’s holding twice as many eggs.  Nobody is going to fucking look up stats on eggs, it’s a stupid segment.

Maybe the price of eggs was ~$1.50/dozen in January 2021 on average but it’s 3.20/now. It was maybe $4.82 in January 2023.

But he’s talking about the price of eggs NOW.

The article blames bird flu outbreaks — which dipshit and TFG will not help with b/c they want to deregulate everything into the sun. And the scotus basically hamstrung all the regulatory agencies thanks to trump’s appointees recent rulings.

Inflation started under Trump and climbed before Biden passed a dime in spending

Biden spent significantly on infrastructure and covid damage repair because Trump ignored and mismanaged both

Exxon made record profits by price gouging during inflation and Kroger’s CEO admitted to price gouging at a recent congressional hearing.

“The allegations are pretty far out there, of course, but I know that allegations aren’t necessarily reality,” Vance, R-Ohio, said of Robinson’s reported comments on a porn site.

In Vance’s interview with NBC Philadelphia, he said it is “ultimately up to Mark Robinson and North Carolina whether he’s going to be their governor and whether he wants to stay in the race.”
    . . .
When asked whether Vance believes Robinson’s denial that the comments were made by him, Vance said that the situation needed to “play out.”

“I don’t not believe him, I don’t believe him — I just think that you have to let these things sometimes play out in the court of public opinion,” Vance said. “He’s going to make whatever arguments he wants to make. I’m sure the news media and others are going to investigate these comments further.”

@WaterGirl: The 25th Amendment doesn’t work for this purpose unless Vance literally sends assassins to do something to Trump.

It’s not intended to be a means for the Vice-President to seize power from an unfit President, because of the potential for abuse. The VP and Cabinet can only inactivate him for a short time unless he cooperates. If he doesn’t, and declares that he’s OK, it takes a supermajority of both houses of Congress to keep him out, a harder lift than an impeachment-trial conviction. The VP would have to rely on a bipartisan consensus backing up his scheme, and at this point, I think most Democrats regard Vance as a worse egg than Trump.

So if Vance is planning on that route to seize power, he’s a fool.

It just occurs to me … what store gave Vance permission to film this nonsense?

I was threatened with being thrown out of a grocery store many years ago for taking pictures with a single-shot camera.  Vance had have a number of people with him.  How many SS does he travel with?  Then there’s campaign staff and a film crew.  I can’t move very close to my screen to read the dairy products, because my cat is sleeping between the back of my chair and my back and if I move she’ll fall down, but it looks like Krogers.  But where?  Whose permission was obtained?

@Shakti: most lawyers are lawyers because they can’t handle math and science. If they could handle math they would have gone into business and MBA school, if they could handle science they would be patent lawyers or doctors.

This tweet says it was Reading, PA.

Playing that the video full screen, there’s a woman with a red “King Food” shirt. King Food is indeed across the street from “Villalba Deli & Grocery” according to Google Maps.

@rikyrah: Also, New York City’s chief legal counsel resigned last weekend. Lisa Nornberg had been on the job 14 months and is a former senior US attorney. Her resignation was announced on a Saturday night.

An Emerson U. poll published May 30 found that only 30% of City voters had a favorable opinion of Eric Adams, while 60% viewed him unfavorably

My hope is that Adams, Robert Menendez and George Santos end up in the same federal cellblock, along with Sam Bankman-Fried

Ed. Santos’s sentencing is scheduled for February. Some New York Republicans could be sweating this. Santos seems like the kind of guy who would take notes on a conspiracy.

    @WaterGirl:

If Trump and Vance were to be elected, Trump would be out of there so fast, based on the 25th amendment, before Trump could say “I should have gone with Pence again.”

25A won’t work. Cyanide or (more likely) a Russian style “accidental” fall of Trump out of a high window will, though….

JD has way more discipline than Trump, but I’d bet that he won’t do the campaign any good in the VP debate, because he’s clumsy and robotic.

Not only that, but deeply and obviously phony JD will be debating the original of what he’s trying to imitate, a basic down to earth highly intelligent and empathetic communicator. JD will stand naked and exposed as what he is — a space alien trying to impersonate a human.
