The blue mountain heading towards the sea is DJT (Truth Social).
Trump Media’s stock is now trading at $13.55 U.S. a share, down 83% from a peak of $79.38 U.S. reached shortly after the company went public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in March of this year.
The red line is the S&P 500, which hit a record high today. On March 1, it closed at 5098. Today it is 5718. That’s a 12% gain.
If history still exists after the election, this is going to be one of the many WTF parts of the last 8 years.
dmsilev
I guess that means that The Market, holy be its name, is decidedly bearish on his prospects for returning to the Oval Office.
Edit: that article is out of date; DJT closed down even further, at $12.15. Which is still overvalued by about $12.14999 per share.
Another Scott
Donold loser failure Turnp having a loser failure business enterprise? One that has never lived up to its hype? One that seemed to be designed – from the beginning – to be nothing more than a quasi-legal payoff that had nothing to do with business fundamentals or growth prospects?
Unpossible.
Cheers,
Scott.
Suzanne
My reaction to the impending collapse of any Trump venture would be “Michael Jackson eating popcorn”. It’s really a shame that there is not a gif of “Suzanne eating pretzels”.
Craig
Even at that value doesn’t he get millions out of it, since he put nothing into it? Haven’t followed this, the LGM folks occasionally talk about it.
Urza
@Craig: Still worth $2.43 billion and he owns like 60% of that
Yutsano
Meh. Wake me up when it’s a penny stock.
EDIT: Also applies to Tesla.
jayne
I might have missed it in an earlier thread, but apparently Janet Jackson’s doubling down on her comments about Kamala Harris not really being Black. Given what I’ve heard about Randy Jackson, it’s not surprising, but it’s disappointing.
RevRick
@Another Scott: +3 for the Ralph reference.
Having grown up in the New York metropolitan area and exposed to their tabloid press, Trump impressed me as a rich jerk from the get-go. He regularly made headlines, and always in an “ew gross” way.

@Yutsano:
Well, at this rate, $5.00 a share may only be a few weeks away.
Sister Golden Bear
@jayne: The Jackson family were/are devout Jehovah Witnesses, so not surprising at all.
Another Scott
@jayne: Huh. I thought she retracted that stuff yesterday.
[ Google… ]
Oh. I see that that was an “unauthorized apology”.

Oh well. Unfortunate.
And an unfortunate distraction, but such is life. I’m sure Kamala has heard much, much worse.
Forward!!
Cheers,
Scott.
sdhays
He holds 114.75 million shares. So if he gets $1 per share, that’s still $114.75 million for absolutely nothing.
But, honestly, I’ve always assumed the plan is to “sell” his stock for general bribery. He was never going to get paid the market rate. Although, if he loses the election, it just might become worthless in both senses. At least I hope so.
Jinchi
It’s not like he’d get nothing, but claiming that TFG’s share is worth 60% of $2+ billion is just flat out wrong and always has been.
He can’t actually sell a large chuck of his shares without turning it into a penny stock.
John S.
@Sister Golden Bear: This is true, but I am not aware of JWs being overtly racist. Homophobic, transphobic and xenophobic for sure.
Keith P.
I’m surprised Nunes dropped the short-seller blame so fast. I really did expect Trump to start saying that short-selling should be illegal.
sdhays
@Keith P.: Wouldn’t it be “hilarious” if it turned out Trump was profiting off of short selling his own stock? Or at least trying to?
I don’t believe it because I don’t believe he has the cash (or, really, the technical competence), but it would certainly be an interesting development.
Hoppie
@Sister Golden Bear: I spent much of my childhood being exposed to a lot of religion, and it always impressed me how the JWs were spectacularly, remarkably, unbelievably, integrated. They were the most racially equal white and black group I ever saw. However weird the religious ideology, they were very earnestly so into their religion that race was obliterated. For that, I gave them much respect.
HumboldtBlue
There is no manner in which Trump can’t be a boorish, angry, vicious little twat of a man.

@Jinchi:
Assuming he can sell them at all. Stocks don’t exist in a magical space where their value is an official number on a board, no matter how hard people try to pretend that’s how it works. The value won’t just plummet. I doubt there are enough people willing to buy.
EDIT – I am reminded of NFTs and other crypto assets, where they would be ‘worth’ $50,000 because of some insider trades, but no one would actually buy them. In that case, they only needed to find a few suckers, since they were making profit on nothing whatsoever.
EDIT EDIT – The flip side is that if some super-wealthy corrupt asshole wants to buy $3 billion worth of Trump’s stocks, they can.
Jay C
@Another Scott:
An upding for mentioning the “quasi-legal” part: Trump Media has ALWAYS struck me as being, basically, a Big-Money scam to give the Donvict a huge payoff via “floating” billions of dollars worth of fundamentally worthless shares, of which he owns a metric shit-ton, whose value is likely (even at their present low levels) being propped up by the sort of stock-market manipulations Big Money pays large crowds of lawyers large amounts of cash to avoid getting any consequences for doing…

@Jay C:
It’s a weird scam, because the company that merged with Trump Media to make it valuable seems to have been a scam run on the legitimate investors who put their money in on it. I’m surprised they aren’t suing. They put their money in because they’d been given a list of company rules about what would be bought, and Trump Media sure as Hell did not match those rules.

It was more that they’re extremely conservative, and therefore susceptible to the Wingnut Wurlitzer, even if they officially don’t engage in politics. They may not watch Fox News themselves, but they move in circles where they pick it up from others.

@Jay C: Yup. The major shareholders and company officers of the underlying company need to be questioned by Congress. I frankly think this sort of transaction – give somebody a huge stake in some company for no work – should be flatly illegal. IIRC, that’s how GWB got a large position in a sports team. No work, just a humongous gift.

Nebraska is flirting with changing the way they allocate their electoral votes to eliminate allocating one to each congressional district. The goal being to deprive the Democrats of 1 EV that they would otherwise get.

The Crypto “industry”. That’s rich. So where are the factories with smokestacks cranking out little cryptos? What’s that you say? Cryptos are too small to be seen? And what exactly do they do? Something something blockchain money money money, and it’s all somewhere in an invisible cloud that nobody can see?
Sure sounds like a religion to me. The “product” is intangible: it cannot be touched, cannot be seen, cannot be tasted, and does not weigh anything. It only “exists” in a cloud as streams of numbers … or as an act of faith in the Magic of the Market.

There was a point where Elon Musk could have bought all of DWAC (the company that became DJT when it did the SEC Shell Game) for $600M. Today it’s got a total market cap of less than $2.5B, which may still be more than Twitter’s value.
Anyway, I remember right wing shills like Carol Swain buying shares of DJT when it was $60/share, the schadenfreude of them losing a ton of money is certainly something to celebrate.
