A tale of two polls:
NPR
CNN
So in conclusion, don’t pay attention to the polls, as John Cole advised last night. They tell us nothing or everything or maybe give is a hint. But don’t get caught up emotionally with what the media tells is they mean.
LFG!
martha
@Soprano2: Yep! I’m guessing Ruhle will bring it up, even as a broader question. But the theme of the day is the economy, so I’m guessing they’ll mostly discuss that. I just hate the whole “bowing to the crypto dudes” baloney. No one, so far, has been able to convince me that it’s not a total scam to fleece $$ from rubes.
Matt McIrvin
@Scout211: That difference is all going to be about differences in the likely-voter model, among the very group where we’re expecting to see unknown and critical changes in voting behavior. It’s simply un-modelable with the degree of confidence we’d need to predict the future.
But the other side of the coin is that if you can’t predict the future, you can still affect it. That’s what it’s all about.

Another Scott
J and I saw Marky Ramone and his band at the Black Cat in DC last night. Fun, energetic show. (How they can play song after song, continuously (2-3s between songs) for an hour is a question for the oracle.) He’s a great drummer, even ignoring the fact that he’s **72**.
Of course, there was a mosh pit a few feet from the stage. It was weird seeing one of those again. [ rofl ] But the 1-2 dozen people (~ half twenty-somethings, ~ half 60-somethings) who wanted to do the run around and smash into others had their fun while the rest of us could enjoy the music.
“… it’s the end the end of the ’70s, it’s the end the end of the century…”
20+ minute encore as well.
A great show if you get a chance to see them.
Nostalgia has its place and can be fun to visit, but indeed, forward into the future is the way to go.
Forward!!
Cheers,
Scott.
New Deal democrat
The one thing that concerns me is that Trump has grabbed the microphone and is flooding the zone with outrageous statements about immigration, an issue where even 25% of Democrats say there is a problem. Secondarily, he and his understudy are talking about inflation, another issue where the GOP continues to have an edge.
And yes we can bitch about the accuracy of polling, but it is good at showing a trend, and the trend is Trump gaining a little ground by firming up his support.
Which means I really wish Harris would grab the microphone back by a splashy but simple proposal in the economic sphere, and start hammering it daily.

Moved up from an earlier thread…
Here’s a postcard writing question for the hive mind…
In some of the scripts I’ve gotten they tell us to write the following: Who you vote for is private; whether or not you vote is public information.
I find that kind of ominous and threatening. Does anyone have a more benign take on it? I really don’t want to write it, but of course I have to write what the script says…

@Baud: Meaning what? Every time Republicans are in charge, they pass massive tax cuts for the rich, and every time the Democrats get back in control, they raise taxes back up to undo the damage.
The problem is that the process known as Reconciliation only allows one bite of the apple per year. So while Republicans, who are laser focused on cutting taxes on the rich, gleefully use that one-time opportunity to do that, Democrats, who have multiple priorities, have to choose what to do first.
The Democrats got lucky in 2022 that the Parliamentarian ruled that the Inflation Reduction Act was an amendment to the original Reconciliation of the Build Back Better, thus allowing a rare second bite.

Yeah, I don’t quite get it — Harris and team have been much more quiet than I would have expected leading into and coming out of the debate. I’m sure there’s a plan to it because if we’re noticing it then political strategists inside and outside the campaign are noticing it.
My only guess is that they’re seeing data that Trump’s negatives are going up from being overexposed.
Regardless, I hope they have a whirlwind sprint planned for the last month of the campaign.

Torrey
@RedDirtGirl:
You don’t say where you’re writing the postcards to. People in red states/areas may be concerned about harassment, and the sentence in question may be emphasizing that, while the fact of voting is on the record, the ballot itself is secret. I saw that Beau (actually Belle now) of the Fifth Column had a segment in response to questions from Democrats in extremely red areas on how to avoid being identified as Democrats when you go to vote.
Not unrelatedly, I have wondered if the announcement that ballots are to be hand-counted in Georgia might–in addition to potentially delaying the results–be intended to suppress Democratic votes by implying that an actual person could at some point connect your ballot to your name. (Not true, but with the behavior of some Trump supporters, I can see where new or rare voters would have concerns.)

Speaking of postcards, for those of you who are writing a TON of them, please remember that people donated postcard stamps, and I have about 1,000 stamps left that have not been distributed.
300 postcards is roughly $150 in stamps, 500 postcards is roughly $250 in stamps.
Send me email if you are a big postcard writer and can use a hand with the stamps. The same thing applies if you are writing 100 postcards and it puts a serious crimp in your budget. We all have ebbs and flows with disposable income – at least most of us do! – so don’t be shy about getting in touch.
Fair Economist
@BR: Harris seems to have a plan – I’ve seen three announcements recently of huge numbers of generally respected, not specifically Democratic groups, endorsing Harris – economists here. These are unheard-of events – I don’t ever recall this kind of thing prior to Trump.
It’s just that the media is following its usual policy of ignoring important rational reasons for supporting Democrats so they can flog Republican propaganda, lately talking about immigration.
It’s a damn shame, but typical, that the only Harris endorsement to get significant reporting was Taylor Swift’s. She’s a great singer and songwriter and seems to be sensible and smart; but the support of hundreds of economist or hundreds of former administration officials or even the support of hundreds of *elected Republicans* should count for far, far, more.
narya
@Marleedog: That remains one of my absolute favorite cabinet picks of all time; it’s so powerful.

@frosty: I think it would sound friendlier as “whether you vote is a matter of public record, but remember who you vote for is private and nobody knows except you”.
BR
@Fair Economist:
I mean any even third rate political strategist knows that a press release with a bunch of economists isn’t going to get any votes or any attention in the current media environment. It’s not a bad thing to do, but it’s not going to do anything.
They clearly knew what to do in early August. Every day Harris and the campaign spokespeople were trolling Trump really hard and holding big events. Trump was sputtering and couldn’t get his message out.

@New Deal democrat:
Yeah. As bad a thing as it says about the nation, there is in fact a logic to the Haitians-eat-dogs story: get the national discourse back to immigration, an issue on which you have an edge. It barely matters what anybody’s saying about immigration, so long as it’s what’s on everyone’s (and especially the swing voters)’ minds.
Soprano2
@RedDirtGirl: I have read about studies that show that when people know that their neighbors can find out whether or not they voted, it tends to make them more likely to vote. That’s probably where that comes from. It also might be a way to make sure people aren’t creeped out by getting a postcard from a stranger in these days when people seem to believe their address is private information. I was doing what they call “dialing missing digits” when I was selling newspaper subscriptions. The manager would look in the local directory where it had numbers in order by exchange, and they would write down the phone numbers that weren’t in there. You got lots of disconnects, but you also got people with unlisted numbers; sometimes they were freaked out and demanded to know how you got their number. Some of them didn’t believe me when I told them I was randomly dialing phone numbers that weren’t in the directory.

SteveinPHX
@Marleedog: I absolutely agree. I hope that comes about.
oldgold
@Soprano2: I do not think so.
One of the problems with Trump is that there is such a torrent of this kind of thing that is difficult put a spotlight on any one thing.
For instance, you start to focus on the Medal of Honor desecration and then he is desecrating Arlington Cemetery. You focus on that and then he is screaming about dogs and cats being eaten by immigrants.
Belafon
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): but then we’re back to the issue of what if the media won’t cover what she does?
BR
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Yeah, I wouldn’t describe it as concern per se — I imagine they have tons of metrics they are using to guide campaign strategy.
People get their information and entertainment online these days, especially the less politically engaged and younger they are. Every fun podcast or interview that Harris or Walz does will bounce around on social media for a day or two. That means that if they can do such a podcast or (non-news) interview every other day they’ll garner huge attention online. Trump isn’t getting that kind of attention online — he’s so boring these days that his rallies and bro-podcast interviews don’t get amplified except by the national news outlets.
Denali5
My script was aimed towards getting people to vote by mail. It included the site to go to for requesting a mail-in ballot. I agree I wouldn’t want people to be put off by mentioning that voting is public information even if it is. People are sensitive.

Saturday Morning Trump took aim at Bill Maher’s Friday night guest Stephanie Ruhle.
He called her a “dumb as a rock bimbo.”
This stupid insult, which had to have angered Ruhle, together with Ruhle’s business background may be why Harris chose her for this interview.

@RevRick: Schumer and Manchin seemed pretty confident about the IRA’s prospects when they sprung their surprise announcement. That was right after Schumer got the CHIPS+ bill passed in late July, 2022. So I’m thinking maybe they were not so lucky that the Parliamentarian allowed the bill to proceed under Reconciliation, but instead had good reason to believe it would qualify.
Schumer is a shrewd operator and he knew the Build Back Better bill wasn’t going to pass, and he would have structured the process so as to allow another bite at the apple. As a baseball manager once said, “Luck is the residue of good planning.”
rikyrah
@Melancholy Jaques:
How is she refusing to address it?
She’s already said that she would sign the bi-partisan, giving Republicans everything they wanted border bill that the Orange Menace told them to scuttle.

@rikyrah: I was listening to this week’s “Talking Feds,” and Tara Setmayer said that, when she was working on the R side of the aisle, if they had gotten the bill that was proposed earlier this year, they would have been all over it. I can’t help but think that if Harris just keeps pounding that they HAD a bipartisan bill and TCFG instructed his minions to kill it, the immigration “issue” works against TCFG. I know she’s said it multiple times, but of course it’s not getting the play it should.
