Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

The lights are all blinking red.

Petty moves from a petty man.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

The revolution will be supervised.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

WASHINGTON — The Secret Service has placed an agent on administrative leave over allegations the employee sexually assaulted an aide to Vice President Kamala Harris during a recent trip.

The incident, which the Secret Service confirmed it is investigating, allegedly occurred last week in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The visit was to provide advance security and planning for a Harris campaign stop that did not end up taking place, according to Real Clear Politics, which first reported on the allegations.

There does not seem to have been an extension to the authorization to spend the military funding to Ukraine though. So unless the White House can figure out a work around, about 6 billion dollars worth of aid will be allowed to lapse in about four days. And there’s nothing in the CR for additional funding going forward, I don’t think.

The House is out of session for a while now too. So where this leaves Ukraine is to be seen.

I have such a wish list if we can give President Harris a legislative majority.

Passing a law that gets rid of the debt ceiling and funds the government in accordance with passed legislation is on the list.

Why do we let the GOP do this? Sigh.

@Eolirin: Reuters says that the Biden admin has ways to get the money spent for Ukraine.  We’ll see the details tomorrow, apparently.

On Thursday, U.S. officials said, the White House intends to notify Congress it will move forward with the announcement of a $5.6 billion drawdown from U.S. weapons stocks. The contents of that package are still in flux, the officials said.

Reuters reported this month that the Biden administration was considering a backup plan under which it would announce plans for shipments for Ukraine, but with an extended delivery timeline for the weapons and equipment, allowing for a more gradual transfer of resources to Ukraine without missing the Sept. 30 deadline.

A second announcement slated for Thursday will be for $2.4 billion worth of aid under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative program, which allows the administration to buy weapons for Ukraine from companies rather than pull them from U.S. stocks.

That aid will include munitions, weapons to combat drones and material to support munitions production in Ukraine, one of the U.S. officials said.

Biden and his people know how this stuff works. They were not surprised by the CR antics and knew the deadlines in the Ukraine aid legislation.

    They’ve got this.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Of note, Trump apparently was lobbying GOP members as late as this morning to include an election “security” (read “suppression”) bill of some sort, any sort, in the CR. Even a fig leaf that he could demagogue over. He got nothing, and well over half of the GOP caucus voted for “he got nothing”. Given how vindictive and favor-oriented he is, that’s not exactly a vote of confidence in him from what should be his strongest supporters….

Top staffers resign from North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s office amid scandal
    Resignations follow campaign staff departures

    wbtv.com/2024/09/25/top-staffers-resign-north-carolina-lt-gov-mark-robinsons-office-amid-scandal/

By Cassidy Johncox and Nick Ochsner
    Published: Sep. 25, 2024 at 3:27 PM PDT|Updated: 4 hours ago
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Several high-ranking members of Mark Robinson’s office have resigned amid a scandal involving the North Carolina lieutenant governor, WBTV confirmed Wednesday.

Now-former chief of staff Brian LiVecchi confirmed to WBTV on Wednesday, Sept. 25, that he and the lt. governor’s communications director John Wesley Waugh, policy director Jonathan Harris, and director of government affairs Nathan Lewis all resigned from their positions. The resignation of the four top staffers comes just after four campaign officials resigned from Robinson’s 2024 campaign for North Carolina governor.

The chaos surrounding the Republican governor candidate spawned from a CNN article that brought disturbing allegations against Robinson. It’s alleged that Robinson made several “inflammatory comments” on a pornography website between 2008 and 2012, years before he took office.

Robinson reportedly called himself a “black NAZI” and made inappropriate statements like “slavery is not bad.” The CNN article includes several comments reportedly made by Robinson related to him peeping on others, transgender porn, and more.

@Jackie: I saw that. Here is a local news story:

Brian LiVecchi, a top adviser to North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, is resigning from his post as chief of staff and general counsel in the office of the lieutenant governor — the biggest move in a new wave of coming departures following allegations that Robinson made racist and lewd comments on a pornographic website more than a decade ago.

In addition to LiVecchi, Director of Communications John Wesley Waugh, Policy Director Jonathan Harris, and Director of Government Affairs Nathan Lewis have stated their intention to resign, people familiar with the matter told WRAL. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they feared professional retribution.

The resignations — which represent half of the office’s staff — are expected to become effective in the coming days, WRAL learned Wednesday.

Waugh, who serves as the office’s spokesman, didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

Until now, fallout from the allegations, made in a CNN investigation last week, has centered on Robinson’s campaign for governor. A number of fellow Republicans have questioned whether the Republican nominee should drop out of the race in the wake of the scandal and as he trails Democrat Josh Stein by double digits in recent polls.

At least eight members of Robinson’s campaign staff — including his campaign manager, finance director and a senior adviser — have resigned, current and former campaign staff members said Sunday.

The latest resignations show that the situation is spreading into state government.

@Geminid: I agree. The “Trump loses” future (the most likely one, IMO) features a radical perspective shift in the GOP, wherein the near-certainty of Trump’s eventual penal servitude, and the two-year respite until the next election cycle, lances the boil of Trump’s control over the party and authorizes a period of more normal (at least, less psychopathological) corporate GOP decisionmaking.

It’s not that they like him—nearly every Republican officeholder loathes him and wishes him dead. But if he loses, then they can believe that they don’t need him anymore. For most of them, “he loses, I survive” is actually the best-case scenario.

“All these thugs better get their mind right and their ass out of our country before January 20th,” the post concluded. That would be the day Trump and Vance would be sworn into office if they win November’s election.
