On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

Halfway through the trip, Dame N and I made the journey from Montpelier to Cooperstown. On the way, we made a couple stops. First, we met my friend Elizabeth!, an outstanding singer, trombonist, and songwriter who I know through an amazing marching band and who now runs the Vermont Governor’s Institute (follow the link to her excellent music). Then we stopped in Saratoga Springs, a little bit for lunch and to check out the local library, but mostly to check out an extradimensional bookstore which will be the subject of the three sets after this one.
We met Elizabeth! at the Red Hen, an excellent bakery and cafe in Middlesex, VT. It’s very worth the visit if you’re in the area. Out back they have a maker/camp/performance area which is where the this and the next couple pics were taken.
This and the next few pictures are from the Saratoga Springs Public Library, which Dame N and I much enjoyed visiting.
This and the next one are from the children’s area.
We dug this Star Trek collection they had on display.
A mural near the library.

I had already figured that out!
Love the bookstore and the outdoor art as well. That really is an area I’d like to visit.

Love the kids area!!!!

Camp Meade (which Red Hen is part of), is an old Civilian Conservation Corps camp that’s been converted into a community space. They do children’s art stuff in those buildings, with hands on the green in the summer.
Also, Red Hen has the best creemees around with their own handmade waffle cones.
The whole thing is just super cool, and Red Hen anchors a whole community out of what used to be just a random spot along Route 2 on the way to the ski areas.

Montpelier is an almost surreal place, because it’s a state capital that is a tiny village. There’s hardly anything there, but it has a big golden-domed state house among the trees.

No wonder our old Colorado neighbours wanted so much to move back to her home state of VT once they had kids! They managed to, right after we moved away, so all’s well that ends well.

@L Boom: Did not know the first part, which is very cool. We definitely enjoyed the food; I’d have to look at my journal, but I think I had a delicious cinnamon roll as part of my breakfast.

@stinger: You’re going to enjoy the next three photosets, then…

@StringOnAStick: Strangely enough, 5 or so years ago my mom sold our place in Island Pond, VT to a family moving from Colorado. That would be wild if it was the same people.
