Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Walz rally scheduled for today starting around 3 pm Eastern

Harris briefing on the hurricane around 4 pm Eastern

I am making broccoli quiche because I wasn’t in the mood to go to the store.  I had broccoli, green onions, a frozen pie crust, swiss cheese and half-and-half, so I figured I could make it work.

Let’s just say it’s not going great.  The broccoli was a couple of ounces less than I needed, not a big deal.  The I started it steaming and forgot about it, so it’s definitely not “partially cooked”.  I started the garlic sautéing in butter while I cut up the green onions, which were definitely older than I expected.  Then the alarm went off to tell me it was time to force the post to publish.  Then i noticed that the butter / garlic was brown because I hadn’t gotten the green onions in to sauté.

This will not be the best quiche ever.  I’m normally a good cook.  Really.  sigh.

Update: while we’re waiting for the rally to start. I truly think this might be the best Liberal Redneck video ever.

Sone times it’s almost comforting to eat a meal that perfectly encapsulates the day you’re having.  Decide which event of the day is over-browned garlic and which is not enough broccoli.

Can you put the brown butter onions and long-cooked broccoli into scrambled eggs?  less cooking for the eggs & other ingrediants.

Watching the VP debate last nght, all I could think of looking at Vance was that ancient Who song, Behind Blue Eyes: “No-one knows what it’s like to be the bad man, the sad man, behind blue eyes….But my dreams are all as empty as my conscience seems to be.”

But of course Waltz has blue eyes, too.  Among the candidates we have one brown-eyed woman and three absolutely whiter than pale men with blue eyes.  What percentage of the total population of the US has blue eyes?  Not 75%, that’s for sure.

@Josie: @scav:  I was gonna go with the browned butter, but by the time I got to it, the garlic pieces were actually black, so I threw that out, wiped the pan, and started over with the one regular onion that was left in the house.  And of course I had another garlic clove, so all good there.

Better with green onions, but they were slimy, so that was out.

A new Cook Political Report Swing State Project Survey conducted by BSG and GS Strategy Group (September 19-25; 2,941 voters), shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading or tied with former President Donald Trump in all but one of the seven battleground states. Overall, she holds a narrow lead of 49% to 48% in a two-way matchup.

Harris has a lead within the margin of error in Arizona (+2), Michigan (+3), Nevada (+1), Pennsylvania (+1), and Wisconsin (+2). Trump is ahead 49% to 47% in Georgia, and the two candidates are tied at 49% in North Carolina.

So, apparently this just happened (TPM):

Jack Smith Releases Report Detailing What Crimes Trump Committed on January 6

Nearly two years after being named special counsel, Jack Smith has released the most damning evidence he’s collected to demonstrate that Trump sought to block the peaceful transfer of power in the 2020 election.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan for the District of Columbia ordered that the report, clocking in at 165 pages, be released after a back-and-forth with the Trump team over redactions. Its appendices have not yet been released.

The report, styled as a legal brief addressing why Trump’s actions are not immune from prosecution under the Supreme Court’s July immunity decision, cites exhibits and evidence about Trump’s 2020 self-coup attempt. It may be Smith’s last chance to show his case to the public: Trump has said that, if he wins in November, he will have the DOJ terminate the cases against him

So much of the debate commentary has bugged the hell out of me. Oh, finally a substantive debate on the issues. This is the way it used to be! And btw I don’t have a problem with the way Walz handled himself during the debate.
I hate the way pundits and opinion writers romanticize the past as a time in the US when everyone got along and was polite to each other. Also, no one could get anything out of the last debate? It’s not Kamala Harris’s fault Trump is a monster. She was supposed to take his garbage responses and not defend herself? She talked about policy if only you could’ve paid attention and not been so sad that Trump was getting dragged.

So much of the comments seemed so misogynistic to me. Oh, these two men did a great service to our country! I think many pundits loved a debate where a Republican sounded sane and reasonable even if he lied about everything.

You know what? JD Vance is the guy who heard all his family and family friends talking about “Ivy League peckerheads who do nothing but lie and cheat working men!” and he thought “wow… so if I get to the Ivy League, I have it made! I’ll just have to lie and cheat working men!”

(He thought “peckerhead” was a meaningless epithet and not a qualification, but all agreed, he had *that* quality in spades. And hearts, diamonds, clubs, and, thankfully, “no trump”.)

@prostratedragon: I doubt that, but, let me explain why.

Modern cooks will tell you, to blacken, get your cast iron frying pan so hot it loses its seasoned-appearance, and looks like white ash on the bottom. That’s an *astounding* amount of heat, all waiting to be transferred into just the few mm of fish skin you want to crisp all to fuck and gone. (What? I think Gordon Ramsey uses that term.) I say “fish skin” but I’ve heard of poultry being blackened, too – I’m no speciesiest in fish/fowl when about to horrifyingly scorch innocent animal material I plan to masticate into chunks, and then dissolve in gastric juices.

This is a lot of heat – cast iron *takes* a lot of heat to heat up, and thus, gives up a lot when cooling down. This level of heat is beyond “I want to sear my steak” – this is getting to “I’ve always wanted to try Pittsburgh rare…”.

(Pittsburgh rare = steel worker brings in a steak, and drops it on a fresh plate of just-cast metal. Burned on the outside, bloody in-.)

A long, hot, cook will dry things. And of all the things you’re likely to notice, if  you left it on just a *hair* too long, is fish.

So: I’m sure there’s some good “the cook lost focus,” stories – hard pretzels claim that origin – but I don’t think blackened cooking is where it might have come from. The physics doesn’t work out quite right.

    @rikyrah:

I am a senior who lives on SS. I can do this reasonably because I worked till after I turned 72 yrs old, after starting to work at 13, even though my last 9 yrs were not full time. Part of the reality in having a parent who owned his own business, and then owning it longer than he did. And I agree with your post. And part of that is possibly Joe Biden’s age – he’s one of us old farts. We aren’t looking at decades of prices going far more than to the moon, we aren’t looking at worrying about college or finding a job. We have Social Security and likely a decent bank account. We may be considering selling our cars because most big towns have decent bus service, possibly good transit trains, decent senior transit vans, close enough grocery stores, have seen a lot of the country and possibly much of the world, and if we’ve seen all of that and have the above, we can likely sell our cars at a decent price and therefore have no monthly car insurance payment. All of which means that we don’t have to actually spend a lot to be comfortable

And all of the above can change from when you were of working age and when you reach the actual age of seniority. In some ways for the better.
