Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In my day, never was longer.

Let there be snark.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

He really is that stupid.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

This really is a full service blog.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Tim and Scout Walz Walk With Matt

Matt from We Rate Dogs went on a walk with Tim Walz and Scout – and took a lot of crap about it on the elon hellscape. But OMG, how wholesome is this?

And Scout weighs 110lb? That’s a big dog – Trixie is barely in 110. (She’s super skinny, but tall).

Anyway, didn’t want you to miss the entire video if you hadn’t seen it. I’d only seen snippets until tonight. And it really brightened my night. And now instead of feeling guilty about not walking the dogs, I’m going to take them on a quick jaunt before dinner. It will do us all good.

open thread kind of  – I know Cole and WG have something scheduled.

A historic United States port strike has been suspended, according to the International Longshoremen’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance.

A tentative agreement was reached “on wages” and extending “the Master Contract until January 15, 2025 to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues,” the ILA and USMX said in a joint statement Thursday evening.

“Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume,” the statement read.

Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley recently discussed the state of the golf course in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene with preparations for the 2025 Masters just six months away. Ridley confirmed the Masters will go on as scheduled from April 10-13 while holding a press conference at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at which he discussed the state of damage from the Category 4 storm.

“As far as the golf course, it really was affected just as the rest of the community was … there was a lot of damage and we have a lot of people working hard to get us back up and running,” Ridley explained. “We don’t really know exactly what that’s going to mean, but I can tell you … if it’s humanly possible, we will be back in business sooner rather than later.”

I saw that video, and – as delightful as the “Walk with Tim & Scout” is, I’m even more delighted that We_Rate_Dogs is now on YouTube! They’re still on Twitter, but I am not, so I don’t get to see their posts anymore :(

Being able to once again see the Top 10 Dogs of the Week is very nice.

Tonight I am a bit bereft: My kitty Oscar went in today for his hyperthyroid treatment – the I-131 injections – and he’ll be at the clinic for the next few days while he sheds most of the isotope.

It feels very strange to not have him here. No one to feed, to let out (and in and out and in); no feline demands or conversation. He was… not feeling well the last couple of days, which I assume was due to discontinuing his thyroid medication prior to the procedure. So I hope he perks up once his thyroid levels go down. The clinic will call me every day to let me know how he’s doing.

    What’s up, dox?

Two Harvard students have created an eerie demo of how smart glasses can use facial recognition tech to instantly dox people’s identities, phone numbers, and addresses. The most unsettling part is the demo uses current, widely available technology like the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and public databases.
    [snip]
In the demo, you can see Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, the other student behind the project, use the glasses to identify several classmates, their addresses, and names of relatives in real time. Perhaps more chilling, Nguyen and Ardayfio are also shown chatting up complete strangers on public transit, pretending as if they know them based on information gleaned from the tech. Source

Not anywhere remotely close to a Good Thing.

The more I see of Coach, the more I love him — and the more I applaud MVP’s ability to choose well. Between FFG (Future First Gentleman) Doug Emhoff and FVP (Future Vice President) Tim Walz, she is surrounding herself with Mensches. This is a VGT (Very Good Thing).

Echo came up four times and meowed at me while I was cooking dinner and I blew her off. ” Yes yes I know I am late with the litter boxes and your food dishes might be empty. I’ll do it after dinner!”

Then I went down after dinner and the basement drain where the dehumidifier drains was a bit backed up, so a small puddle was growing. I turned the dehumidifier off amd the drain slowly cleared. By the time I was done with the litterboxes the floor was dry. We’ll have to get somebody in to clear the drain out.

So the new cat trusted me enough to run to me for help (the basement is flooding!) and I blew her off for two hours. Great way to solidify trust. Her brother is still hiding and lurking. I found him under a bed in the guest room so I left a little dish of cat treats under the nightstand, and when I checked fifteen minutes later the dish was empty and he was gone from that spot.
