Cheryl at LGM posted about Kamala Harris’ interview on the podcast called Call Her Daddy. I just listened to it, and it’s good. Here’s Cheryl’s summary of Harris’ media interviews in the next few days:
Harris will do interviews this week with Univision, Howard Stern, The View, Stephen Colbert, and 60 Minutes.
I’ve never listened to Call Her Daddy before, but it’s a podcast aimed at younger women. Univision’s audience is obvious. Howard Stern: incels [edit: and old guys]. The View: women who aren’t working during the day. Colbert: late-night viewers. 60 Minutes: the olds who still watch broadcast TV. Most of the audience of these shows consists of people who don’t read the publications that are whining about not getting a Harris interview.
This is a solid media strategy and I hope to see more of it. The host of Call Her Daddy, Alex Cooper, was clearly a little worried about adding “politics” to her podcast, and she’ll probably lose listeners over it. But she did a good job: she asked questions that would interest her audience. She didn’t have any gotchas. Harris was frank, honest and in command of the issues, mainly around reproductive rights.
Similarly, Taylor Swift will probably lose some of her fans over her endorsement of Harris. The fact that she, Alex Cooper and others are taking risks with their livelihood shows a degree of bravery that’s impressive. Speaking of Tay-tay, remember the asshole who paid $4K for a guitar supposedly signed by her, then smashed it? That guitar wasn’t signed by her.

Hoodie
I’d say Stern is more for certain types of older white dudes, not necessarily incels.
Baud
I assumed his fans were older people.
I think the number of fans Taylor will lose is a rounding error. But I still appreciate her support.
@mistermix.bsky.social
@Hoodie: Yeah, you’re right, updated the post.
geg6
@Hoodie:
Yeah, the incels are more into Joe Rogan and Ben Shapiro.
Nukular Biskits
Not that my opinion matters much and I’m definitely not an expert on political media, but I see no problems at all with what Harris and Walz are doing.
Eric S.
@Hoodie: I agree it is Incels and older men, but the one person I know who listens to Stern is a early 50s woman in medical device sales.
Baud
@geg6:
Doubt Harris will interview with them.

Taylor Swift might have lost some friends, but gained a lot of new friends.

The more the not hit dogs holler the more Harris should ignore the Times and the Post. Since she’s from Cal maybe sit down with someone at The LA Times.

When I first heard this story, I visualized an album cover. If you’re close to Kamala’s age, like me, you know the one: The Clash, London Calling. So when I saw the video of this guy carrying a hammer with him so that he could break an acoustic guitar, I had to laugh. Feeble. And then to find out it wasn’t one of Taylor’s guitars? Cherry on top.
Eric S.
I knew of but didn’t pay any attention to Swift until she started dating Kelce. And I’m not a football fan either. I just loved how it irked the toxic masculinity crowd. How she’s handled that and her endorsement of Harris has really made me appreciate her as a person. (Still not this stick in the mud’s music of choice)
Betty Cracker
I am weirdly at peace with the upcoming election; usually I’m more anxious. Already voted and am otherwise doing my bit. That’s enough.

How much circulation do they get outside of California? Could be a waste of time.

@Betty Cracker:
I have flashes of stress, but I’m pretty same. Benefits of age.

People like Andrea Mitchell keep saying Harris needs to do “tough” interviews, but never specify exactly what they want her to be asked that isn’t being asked. Cooper asked about student loans, reproductive rights, the cost of housing, which are all things the average voter is concerned about. Big name journalists Margaret Brennan, Norah O’Donnell, and Dana Bash had prime time tv slots, and they asked about Walz saying IVF when he really used IUI (do even 1% of voters know what IUI stands for? I didn’t) and he said he was in Hong Kong when Tianamen Square happened when he really meant that he was there the same summer, a few weeks later. Those are the “tough questions” the media wants the chance to ask, a gotcha to say “both sides lie”. Actual voters want to know about abortion access and grocery prices, and you’re not going to get a viral gotcha quote out of that.

Hell yeah. I remember listening to Stern on DC-101 back in the late 1970s while driving to work. (Driving to work + 45 years ago = no spring chicken.)

I subscribe to The Los Angeles Times, but I doubt it has the reach of Colbert or 60 Minutes.
Even the “Call Her Daddy” podcast has more subscribers than the Los Angeles Times. (nearly 1 million vs ~600k).

@geg6: If you cared about New York after 911, Stern was the place to go for the straight shit about what was going on in the city. I had him on one of our FMs in South Florida, and he did an outstanding reflecting the feelings of native NYers…great radio. 911 changed him.
Another Scott
NPR’s All Things Considered had a short segment on this today. Ari was incredibly dismissive, as one might expect. Elena Moore did a decent job.
It’s a 3:37 audio clip – the transcript will appear later.
Cheers,

@VFX Lurker: Probably not, but the LA Times would count as “serious media” (in the eyes of, well, media members who take themselves too seriously). Not the NYT though; the only venue “serious” enough for them is, by odd coincidence, themselves.

I listened to it, too.
24 hrs ago I’d never heard of this (apparently wildly popular & successful podcast), but I came away pretty impressed. The host is younger than both my daughters by a few years, and they’d never heard of her either. She was quite good, I thought, and there were moments when she and Harris really connected. I hope her no-not-politics! fans heard something that convinced them to fucking vote.

CHETAN R MURTHY
@Gretchen: amen. A-fuckin-men.
Steve LaBonne
@Nukular Biskits: I don’t either. I don’t understand the whining in some corners about the campaign “stalling” and the whiners never seem to have realistic suggestions for what she should be doing differently or additionally. I really don’t think she’s leaving any money on the table and I think it’s pretty remarkable for a campaign that had so little time (by American standards) to get up to speed.

How about making that “…women who work inside the home”, OK?

Bill Whitaker is annoying the heck out of me with this 60 Minutes interview. Why, if you believe Trump is a racist, does he have so many supporters? ‘Tis mystery, Bill.

The Daily Beast had a British gossip writer criticize the Harris interview on Call Her Daddy because it wasn’t hard-hitting or some such fucking nonsense. Then the writer grabbed comments that were critical of the podcaster, angry angry angry they were. It was such a silly article, a gossip column, not a fucking news story.

I would actually say, Sterns listeners are GenX incels and their children (I can never remember what the Gens that follow GenX is. Always gets confused). Stern is not the “shock” jock he used to be. From what I’ve seen and heard, he’s actually a great interviewer.
I’ve been saying since her slew of interviews was announced and the political media folks started whining, no one reads Politico except folks already dialled into social media and politics and those types of folks already know who they will be voting for…the majority of the other folks, ya know where they get their “news” from…check out the list of folks MVP Harris IS talking to.
Chump is ONLY talking to news outlets that are watched by folks already on his side or voting for him. Nothing expanding his voter group about that strategy…seems to me like the Chump campaign knows they need to keep their folks from fleeing.
If even half of the usual listeners of this show doesn’t just turn it off or just listen and screaming “whatever”, some of what she’ll say and discuss will permeate their brains, even just through osmosis and if half of those folks reconsider Harris/Walz..and vote for them instead of Chump or just abstain from voting for POTUS, guess what we win…yes we want downballot wins, but the top of the ticket is who we really need to reach the most. if Dem GOTV efforts are strong we’ll retain the Senate AND just might retake the House!
Craig
@Gretchen: like Mrs. Greenspan is capable of doing a tough interview. Her ego is sad, she should retire, but can’t handle how irrelevant she’d become without her job.

@Another Scott: I was interested to hear that Call Her Daddy has a large audience in the south. Ari complained that Cooper didn’t provide any pushback, but again doesn’t specify what he wants that pushback to be. She should have just been “tougher”. Pushback is justified if the person is lying or wrong, but what is the pushback if they’re not lying or wrong?
Barbara
@Steve LaBonne: Like, maybe they access campaign coverage through the same MSM outlets they disdain and don’t really read the regional and non-traditional sources that Harris seems to be tapping into?

I think it can happen. If we get a lock on the legislature especially in Texas – we will have a lock on the electoral college. Then it will be the GOP that will be crying about it and wanting to reform it. We should let them.

But the anti-women laws they have been putting in are likely making life very difficult for everyone.

This is something I notice a -lot- in teevee interviewers these days: when they’re asking a question, they take too long, and the question details too much of the expected answer. So the interviewee is often reduced to parrotting back the last bit of the question, or just “yup, that’s right.” I find it frustrating, and it’s not just shitheads like Andrea Mitchell and Anderson Cooper, but also Rachel Maddow: it’s universal it seems like.

@Hoodie: The incels who were fans of Howard Stern of the 1980s and 90s are losing their shit on the SiriusXM tweet announcing the interview, saying he’s gone totally woke and they’ll never listen to him again. Stern has been pretty openly supporting Democrats since at least 2016, when Trump asked for his endorsement and he wouldn’t give it to him because he didn’t think Trump had any any business running for president and he (Stern) didn’t agree with any of the GOP platform. The two were on friendly terms prior to Trump running for POTUS, and I imagine they’re probably no longer speaking at this point, especially since Stern had Hillary Clinton on the show in 2019 and told her that she should be the president right now (when Trump was still soiling the White House with his odious presence), and that he was sure she would have been a terrific president.
Howard Stern is 180° different from the person he was 25 years ago, and he’s pretty widely respected as one of the best long form interviewers in the business today. He grew up. He’s had a lot of terrific guests in the past few years.
