Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

In my day, never was longer.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

“But what about the lurkers?”

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

If you missed the Family Stories thread from Saturday, you’ll want to read it.  The stories in the comments are a real treat; so many of them were laugh out loud funny.  This morning as I was washing my plate after breakfast, one of the quotes popped into my head and I couldn’t stop laughing. “Sons of bitches, wait for baby!” – uttered by a 3-year old!

dnfree

Way late, but this reminds me of a time we were driving slowly around some neighborhood looking for a friend’s house when a group of maybe 5- and 6-year-olds ran down the street at full speed. Hot on their heels was a smaller boy, maybe 3, running as fast as he could and yelling “Sons of bitches, wait for baby!”

Moving on…

Some amusing news; seems that Musk turning Twitter into a right-wing Xhole has, shockingly enough, resulted in said Xhole missing out on lots of political ad dollars.

Democrats dominate spending on political ads – except on Elon Musk’s X

Across the digital universe, from cable TV to Facebook, Democrats are outspending Republicans on election ads. Elon Musk’s X is a rare exception.

Democrats are massively outspending Republicans on internet campaign ads but one social network is a notable exception: X, owned by Elon Musk, who has increasingly used the platform to elevate his chosen candidate, former president Donald Trump.

Accounts backing Republican candidates spent three times as much on political ads on X than those backing Democrats from March 6 to Oct. 1 — $3 million to $1 million — according to an analysis of company data by AdImpact and The Washington Post.

The other part which is hilarious is that the overall amounts are so small. There are hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on online advertising, and Musk has so completely torched the readership of his plaything that even his ideological allies are only sending him crumbs.

So now that Harris is doing interviews all over the place, the FTFNYT headline is “Harris Will Appear in a Whirlwind of Interviews, Most of Them Friendly”. These fuckers no longer even bother to try to hide the game they’re playing. No, shitheads, she’s not going to come and kiss your owner / publisher’s, er, ring.

    @dmsilev:

Musk has so completely torched the readership of his plaything that even his ideological allies are only sending him crumbs.

This points to why engaging on Twitter now seems fruitless. Musk has winnowed out so many of the reasonable voices that it’s not worth spending advertising money to reach the too few. The site exists to promote mis- and disinformation and many of the “tools” have been redesigned to quell any fact checking or dissent. Not to mention the bot problem.

Yes, it’s too bad there’s not one alternative but too many, still doesn’t mean even millions of people can do much about Twitter’s devolution into an echo chamber of lies and propaganda.

Another really good read put up today by Tom Sullivan, part of which includes:

The money quote went something like this: “He was lying to me. I knew he was lying to me. He knew I knew he was lying to me. But he lied anyway, not because he had anything to gain from the lies, but because it was company policy.”

    …

“Republican commentators and officials with a stake in the recovery effort have decided to play both sides against the middle: calling out lies to facilitate the recovery, but suggesting all parties are to blame,” Brian Beutler writes. This lie-fest over Hurricane Helene response is a dry run for Insurrection 2.0:

Now imagine it’s Election Day. Donald Trump and Elon Musk are posting and reposting lies and rumors about election workers destroying ballots or stuffing ballot boxes, illegal immigrants voting by the hundreds, while turning away red-hatted Republicans.
By then it will be too late for mainstream media to make any particular pattern of behavior a major issue for undecided voters. Republican state officials will continue to have it both ways, condemning lies in an intentionally ineffective way. The die will be cast. And then, if Trump slips behind in the vote count, the stage will be set for insurrection 2.0.

Trump’s allies, corporate ones among them, know they are spreading lies, and do so dutifully.

    digbysblog.net/2024/10/07/lying-is-company-policy-2/

Tom’s writing about much more than what I highlighted.

It’s fun and sometimes not so much. It’s what there is. I’ve had a tornado go by me about 100 yards away driving down the freeway once. I’ve crossed the Atlantic by ship 6 times, and done it in 50+ foot waves one of those times. I’ve crossed the Pacific and Atlantic by plane. I’ve crossed the equator by ship and plane – a number of times. I’ve met idiots and geniuses – more of the first than the second unfortunately, and a hell of a lot of normal humans – of every size, color and nationality. There have been some not so good moments and some absolutely amazing ones. I’ve been to a communist country. I carried a loaded weapon on duty in the military with orders to shoot to kill. I never had to take the weapon out of the holster, other than to unload it to hand over to the next guy. Today I couldn’t say just guy. Today woman serve on ships and in I believe, every aspect of military life. Equal means equal.
