Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

The revolution will be supervised.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

In my day, never was longer.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Celebrate the fucking wins.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Just chilling after finally getting enough energy to do some outside chores today.

Being off a week sick sucks twice.  First, you’re sick. Second, nothing gets down so when you finally feel halfway human again, you get double the workload.

Apropos of nothing in particular: We haven’t been regular SNL watchers for years, but last night we watched the VP debate cold open, and a Weekend Update featuring Bowen Yang as Moo Deng the baby hippo. We were cracking up. The Moo Deng skit included several instances of Yang turning to the side to drink from a hose spraying full force at his face. Afterward I said to my wife, “that is a guy who is committed to the bit.”

Is Yang coming into his own as a standout star of SNL?

Also on the VP Debate, I kept saying about the guy playing Walz, “who is that guy?” Apparently it was Jim Gaffigan. He has Walz down absolutely cold. As does Maya Rudolph as Kamala.

In St. Petersburg with Milton.  High enough so there is no flooding.  Still have electricity.  The bad news is that the three bedrooms on the east side of my house have water from the wind on the floor.  Apparently it blew in where the floor meets the wall?  Have no idea who to call to fix.  However, if that’s the worst thing that happens, I’m ok.

@pat: My daughter and her husband bought a house in April, in Sarasota. It’s an investment property, for a rental. It’s a mile from the water and 23 feet above sea level. They’ve been working on the place ever since, replacing the roof and making sure it’s clamped down correctly, installing hurricane-rated windows, painting, and this week cleaning up after Helene.

They evacuated early yesterday morning, took them 10 hours to get to Savannah. Today they continued on to Maryland to stay with his sister, just a wearying two days.

Helene brought down a huge tree next door that took out their fence but missed both houses.  We’re all wondering if that place will even be there when it’s safe to come back.

And this morning UPS delivered a package to the house. What the heck? The neighborhood was mostly evacuated and with the storm bearing down why was UPS out doing deliveries to private residences at all?

@zhena gogolia: That was annoying, and the only thing they did with the Biden character, but that was not the bulk of the skit. To be honest it wasn’t that funny, there weren’t any real ha-ha moments. But I did enjoy how well they captured Kamala and Tim. Looking forward to more of both in the future. Say 4-8 years of the future.

Most likely it was the YouTube algorithm that then showed me the Moo Deng skit and then that took us down a bit of an SNL rabbit hole.

I’m so happy to hear Joelle is coming! That will, hopefully, brighten your days and your mood.

I did think the plan was to spend winters in Arizona… but it’s not winter yet. And there are family holiday get-togethers coming in the next couple of months, so the seasonal relocation may not happen until January.

Nothing much happening here in Seattle. I’m going to see The Wild Robot this weekend. I didn’t know anything about it, and wasn’t inclined to go, but then I heard a few people (maybe here?) rave about the movie. So I watched the trailer, and then texted my friend:

Me: It sounds like a great movie; it also sounds like the kind of movie that will have me sobbing quietly in my seat.

My Friend: I hear people start crying within the first 10 minutes.

@kalakal: yeah, that’s one of the problems with queen and royal palms. They get too tall. People don’t care how tall something will be in 50 years because they assume they won’t be there….most trees grow pretty fast and the years go by way to fast.

I have a book on landscaping for hurricanes. The author checked with all the dumps to see which species produced the most debris after major hurricanes and also checked with insurance companies.

In South Florida most of the damage was by ficus trees. The author wants people to quit replanting them. Australian pines are also not recommended. Iron wood is though. It has strong wood and roots.

Sable palms, Pygmy date palms and canary island date palms are better for around homes. Queen palms go down, apparently royal palms are better, but still pretty big near houses.

Anyone making jokes about Biden being old has pissed me off. It’s not funny.

He has been an amazing and effective president, not much into ego, all in on getting things handled. I really admire and appreciate him, coming in on the heels of such a political and national mess of terror, lies, ineffective governance, and ruined international relations. Stupid jokes. Plus, my parents made it up to 88, and were perfectly functional, and intelligent, and effective, until their health got to them.

@Sure Lurkalot: baseball love goes back a couple of generations in my family, back to radio days.

I can see why people find it boring.

They find it boring because they don’t understand.   Baseball is a radio game** — you listen to it while doing something else.

In college, I listened to games while doing engineering problem sets.  Do a problem.  Stop to listen as something happens.  Do the next problem.  Listen as the next thing happens.

** For contrast, football is a TV game.  You can’t understand what’s really happening otherwise.  Basketball, on the other hand, is impossible to follow except in person.  On TV, or on the radio, basketball is basically incomprehensible.

@Timill: we don’t have many and they don’t get that big here. They are not strong, but do regrow from the roots in wet areas as a kind of shrubbery not really a tree.

@Matt McIrvin: I wonder if David Attenborough narrating pretty ocean or nature shows would help you sleep. Engaging enough, but not much brain power required. Often, if I can tear myself away from more engaging things, his videos on YouTube take me right to sleep quickly. Or dolphin videos.

Next time I go to the rain or ocean sounds on YouTube, I really need to forward the slider so there’s only a half hour left of it. No need, usually, for 3 hours of it.

I understand rain and ocean might be happy only in 4 corners region, where we miss and crave those things. They do have babbling creeks videos, and GENTLE rain in the forest audios for people who are not happy about ocean.

@Anotherlurker: Dropping off at Walnut Creek City Hall tomorrow.  It feels so good to vote against any and republicans on my ballot.

Really need to rethink your Assembly vote.  The incumbant has demonstrated that she has a devotion to truth worthy of Trump.  If it takes temporarily electing a RWNJ to get rid of her, so be it.  The Democratic Party will be better for it.

@prostratedragon: oh! that was beautiful! I love academy of ancient music. People in the comments asking about that giant lute, the theorbo, favorite instruments of mine.

This is the music for me.

@Bill Arnold: thanks.  we figured it would get strong around 9 am on the 10th on East coast — does that sound right?  Actually I just turned off the circuit the heat pump is on, prob low possibility of damage but that’s easier than fixing.  (Had one damaged last year by supposedly voltage surge.)  And figured it stays strong through the 11th.  ? Figured Aurora possible on the east coast starting 2:30 pm tomorrow.

Saw Kamala on Colbert, all well and good, but when they got to a segment on would you like to have a beer with Kamala, her team chose canned Miller High Life. Huh. How big was the committee that came up with that choice? I suppose they remember too well Obama getting slagged for his elitist food choices, like dijon mustard.

@thruppence: OTOH, it might be her favorite beer. Obviously can’t pick Yuengleng, the company owner is a Trump fan. Can’t pick a craft brewery, you’ll piss off all the others. God knows you can’t go for Heineken or anything foreign. Well, sort of foreign. Miller is now owned by Molson-Coors, so it’s at least North American.
Or maybe it’s her (or Doug’s) favorite beer (ptui Rheinheitsgebot for me!)
Most everything is owned by Belgium now.

@prostratedragon: It’s delightful. I played a dance suite by Handel as part of my senior recital. Everything went well until I got to the Giga. (drat). My teacher had me playing it too fast, not realizing that Handel did not typically write Italian-speed gigas/gigues.
