Let’s talk about Field Operations for Dan Osborn in Nebraska!
An update from our contact:
I would describe our ground game as playing catch-up right now.
The campaign had a skeleton staff and minimal funding until the last couple of weeks, meaning they and we are urgently investing enormous time and money in expanding our grassroots capacity.
We are opening 5 new offices in Western Nebraska on Sunday 10/13 and we have instituted part-time organizer positions which is allowing us to hire local Nebraskans across the state.
These efforts are designed to fight for rural pro-labor voters who traditionally vote Republican but are open to Dan’s message. In Lincoln, the focus is on turning out Democrats that are supporting Dan, while in Omaha our focus is on holding or expanding our Republican Support.
Mail-in-Ballots have already gone out across the state, meaning our persuasion door knocks/calls are also doubling as GOTV conversations when we speak with MIB-received supporters.
The door- knocking focus will likely depend on what polling and early-vote data is telling us about our support. If we get soft with Dems, we’ll double down on D doors in Omaha. If we’re still strong with Dems, our focus will remain on turning out independent and Republican supporters and/or last minute emergency persuasion.
Regardless, this race has razor thin margins of the sort that make field especially fun and meaningful.
Fun Facts
- a little money goes a long way in this small state
- this is a potential Senate pick up
- the campaign is using our funds solely for GOTV efforts
Let’s do this!
If we can get Dan to $22,500 by morning, in donations of any amount, we have an Angel who will take us home! $25k, here we come. (I hope)
Also, if any BJ peeps are local to Nebraska, or nearby, or even if you want to travel, I’m sure Scott can put you to good use!
Just let me know.
OH MY GOSH, YOU GUYS DID IT!
YOU FINISHED THIS OFF IN JUST 4 HOURS!
$2,500 in Angel Matches coming this evening or tomorrow.
AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team
I know this isn’t an individual donation match thread but I just hit it for $50 👊🏻
Ty WG
Josie
I put in $25.00 for Osborn.
Almost Retired
$100 bucks from me. This is clearly the most impactful use of small donations in the Senate races.
VFX Lurker
In for $100.
WaterGirl
@AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team: You’re right, you don’t have to report your donation for this one, but I think it does inspire folks and remind everyone that we’re doing great things together.
Four Directions Nevada (Duck Valley) and the two NC groups still have Balloon Juice Angels where you do need to tell us about your donation in the comments or by email to WaterGirl in order to be matched.
Marmot
In for $25!
frosty
$90 from me to fix that rounding error and make it even!
surfk9
$25 from me
divF
$250 for Osborn.
LNNVA
Just added $25.00 to the pot. Thanks.
Redshift
In for $100!
Redshift
@frosty: I’ve noticed that ActBlue seems to include the tip in the thermometer, which is probably where the slightly off totals come from. (Seems wrong to me to do that, since the goal is money to the candidate, not money donated overall.)
WaterGirl
@Redshift: I can confirm that tips are not included in the thermometers.
It’s just the good-natured back-and-forth between the people who like even numbers and the people who like to mix it up. :-)
skerry
Just threw in $50.
I was born in Nebraska, but had the good sense to leave it at 6 weeks old.
WaterGirl
@skerry: You were precocious!
Maxim
In for $100.
A Ghost to Most
Had to spend 3.5 years there. My aim is to never spend another dime there.
WaterGirl
@A Ghost to Most: That’s okay!
Mike S. (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!)
I just added $50 for 4 Directions (duck Valley)
Thanks again W.G..
Steve in the ATL
Can I donate the “wine” served at the Monroe, Louisiana airport?
Reminiscent of tv of my childhood: “what’s the word? Thunderbird! What’s the price? Dollar twice!”
Steve in the ATL
@Mike S. (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!):
I assume that’s an autocorrect error?
divF
@Steve in the ATL: White port and lemon juice!
Redshift
@WaterGirl:
Weird, I would swear I saw it on one of my past donations, but I’m definitely not seeing it now. Maybe it was just a coincidence with another donation.
Mike S. (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!)
@Steve in the ATL: Is there a valley you particularly dislike? I’m fine with ducks. I have some of those left to give.
evodevo
Just pitched in $25
zhena gogolia
@Steve in the ATL:
Obligatory. One of the greatest actors of all time.
Steve in the ATL
@Mike S. (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!): hidden valley. Each dressing? Eww.
Mousebumples
@divF: I’ll match you with $250. Thanks!
Steve in the ATL
@zhena gogolia: love it!
Steve in the ATL
@divF: [vomit emoji]
zhena gogolia
@Steve in the ATL: This is one case in which it’s fun to read the YouTube comments.
Avalie
in for $200
Another Scott
@Redshift: ActBlue shows the tip in the total in the confirmation page after your donation goes through. But it doesn’t show up in the real campaign thermometer in real life (here).
Agreed that it’s confusing.
Cheers,
Scott.
WaterGirl
@Steve in the ATL: Duck Valley Indian Reservation, Duck Valley for short.
Shane in SLC
I just donated $25. Excited for a possible November surprise!
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia: One of my favorite lines in a movie, ever, was delivered by James Mason – as the angel in Heaven Can Wait.
Paul W.
I’m skeptical on this one, but we need more irons in the fire. In for $25, for the Senate!
Another Scott
@Paul W.: Sure, it’s a heavy lift.
But remember, the RWNJs on the SCOTUS took away a fundamental right since the last election. Something that hasn’t been done before, or maybe at least not since Dred Scott in 1857.
Women, and people who understand the importance of women’s health care, are rightfully pissed off. That anger is different, and opens up opportunities if we’re able to seize them.
We have to try.
Forward!!
Cheers,
Scott.
Matt McIrvin
Field offices in Western Nebraska? Really? Yeah, I’ve been there many times, and it doesn’t make me too optimistic…
…but I’m in for $25.
ToesInTheSand
In for $50 (Osborne) and another $50 for Duck Valley (match if still applicable)…. In memory of the beloved OzarkHillbilly .
Baud
Moved. Wrong thread.
KatKapCC
@Matt McIrvin: California used to be a fairly red state. Things can change. You never know.
WaterGirl
@ToesInTheSand: Tears for Ozark, nearly every day.
Thanks for honoring his memory.
Yes, there’s a match for Duck Valley, too.
Tom Levenson
$50 from me.
I’m afraid I’m falling into magical thinking but I’m starting to wonder if the by election results that show Ds and/or abortion measures outperforming polls might be lurking beneath the surface of this election.
Sure hope so.
WaterGirl
@Paul W.: No guarantees for any of this, for sure. But I figure the more options we have, the higher the likelihood of success.
Appreciate all the folks who are donating as an act of faith!
All the work for the election is an act of faith, at least as far as I’m concerned.
Mercy
$25 here. Yeah, Nebraska…but we must make the case everywhere. No state left behind.
Thanks as always, WG!
rodwell
In for $25.
lowtechcyclist
@Redshift:
After a few donations, I’ve seen the donation+tip show up on the thermometer initially, but the tip always disappears shortly afterwards. Maybe it’s just a glitch in ActBlue’s software.
Nebraska is one of only six states I’ve never been to, the others being Alabama, Arkansas (I do love my ma and pa), Alaska, Iowa, and North Dakota.
Almost Retired
@Matt McIrvin: pretty sure the idea is to cut down the Republican advantage in western NE since Dan has some rural appeal (there may be a better way to express that). It may be a great strategy with this candidate even if it wouldn’t make sense in most races.
BenInNM
In for $25 and also hopeful but realistic
banditqueen
Let’s see what the small donations can do here–it’s thrilling to see someone who’s got a chance against the repub! And the ‘small’ part has nothing to do with what Osborn’s chance of winning is–I want to support someone who can represent the people of Nebraska in a way they aren’t used to anymore, but would come to value.
JMG
A dollar in Nebraska goes a lot further than one in a lot of other states. Happy to contribute.
Steve in the ATL
@lowtechcyclist: the judges would also accept:
Tell your mama, tell your pa
I’m going to send you back to Arkansas
Oh yes ma’am
You don’t do right, don’t do right

There go two miscreants
Added $200 for Osborn.
Redshift
@lowtechcyclist:
Ah, that seems like a definite possibility.
WaterGirl

Another Scott
@WaterGirl: 👍
Well done, WG, matchers, angels, jackals, and everyone in the trenches!
Forward!!
Cheers,
Scott.
WaterGirl
First angel match for $1,000 is in.
The second angel match for $1,500 will be coming either tonight or tomorrow!
You guys rock!
mvr
I gave last night and am actually a weekly Osborne donor. But this makes me nervous:
This (along with the part about letting the early voting turnout determine whether they bother with Ds in Omaha) makes it sound like rather than bolstering Harris support in the first district the GOTV effort may be bolstering “moderate” R support in Omaha who as Rs will still likely go for Republicans in other races. Turning out Ds in Lincoln where I live won’t help get that one EV for Harris/Walz or to flip the Rep in NE-2 to Vargas over Bacon who in fact postures as a moderate.
I’m not going to cancel my weekly donation to Osborne, but like I said, this makes me think there is less upside to that money.
WaterGirl
@mvr: For what it’s worth, I would expect that the Osborn efforts are more likely to help us in CD-2 than they are to hurt us.
