Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

How stupid are these people?

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Remember: Sharing is Caring!

The real reason the GOP hates FEMA is simple

it goes to Reagan's "Most Terrifying Words – ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help."

FEMA is from the government and does help

when people at their lowest see FEMA resources they realize the truth that GOP hates

On a personal note, my friend in Orlando got through the storm. She had a tree fall on her house but otherwise got out with a bunch of wild videos.

Hurricane deniers/FEMA fablers should be staked out at the next estimated landfall site.

More importantly, I think America’s going to need some sort of national all-channels (TV, radio, internet, podcasts) effort to start combatting disinfo of all types.  People need a source of truth and facts to turn to when times get tough, whether it’s an upcoming election or an impending Cat 5 hurricane.

The mainstream media is just not getting it done.

I think we want to go down the path of limited legal liability for your platform spreading misinformation. That would clean the information sewers up

I think exceptions can be made for low viewership. I think the liability has to be based on the degree of issues caused, like interfering with diaster management, sickening people with ‘alternative treatments’, or inciting violence

I want stronger defamation laws, too.

    O/T

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkanon Thursday agreed to unseal additional filings from special counsel Jack Smith laying out his election interference case against former President Trump, something Trump’s attorneys signaled they plan to challenge.

Chutkan agreed to a request from Smith to unseal exhibits that accompany his 180-page brief asserting that prosecutors can still bring much of their Jan. 6 case against Trump in the wake of a Supreme Court decision granting former presidents broad criminal immunity.

    . . .

The court determines that the Government’s proposed redactions to the Appendix are appropriate, and that Defendant’s blanket objections to further unsealing are without merit. As the court has stated previously, ‘Defendant’s concern with the political consequences of these proceedings’ is not a cognizable legal prejudice,’” she wrote.

Again, when Reagan said the “I’m from the government and I’m here to help”, context is essential.  To the audience he was speaking to, at the time he said it, they understood he meant “help black people.”  The federal government forced desegregation, came in and punished all kinds of small town brutal bigotries that before they’d been able to get away with.  Conservative voters were seething with hatred of the federal government because of it.

@Kayla Rudbek: two thoughts come to mind: first, people like Digby have already suggested criminalizing the spread of disinformation On social media and the internet about disasters and Public Safety events.  This is the obvious extension of slander and libel laws.  Second, Germany has pretty robust laws Prohibiting Kinds of speech that Attack the basis of German democracy.  Now there’s an obvious Rejoined to this which is that we don’t want to be prohibiting speech Because that will always lead to some kind of heavy-handed government intervention.  But in this world the heavy-handed intervention is coming from oligarchs.

A friend once made a quip that I always remember: “The Economist never met a large sclerotic public bureaucracyIt liked, And it never met a large scleroticPrivate bureaucracy it didn’t like.”  Either we cut these large Private Corporations and oligarchs down to size, Or we need to regulate them.  To do neither Is to Simply give up our government to them.

@HinTN: We very likely lack the legal framework to do that in enough of the places we’d need to, since that equal access law was predicated on the government’s ability to withdraw its leasing of public spectrum to broadcasters.

With all of the fully private networks that are in place now, both through cable TV and the internet, we’d need something that pushed back the lines of the first amendment from where they currently are if we wanted something similar in effect

We’d have more standing on extending libel and slander laws or incitement of violence, as those are existing carve outs. But we’d still need a court willing to go along with it.

Her comic, The Bear Minimum, has a small syndication contract on it. Really, though her character Holly, she has a great (and humourous) grasp on the vicissitudes of life.

Her character is an anthropomorphic grizzly bear for a reason. Don’t piss her off, or you will find out.

Let’s just say when she posted that comic I was all in on that thread. There’s still a (shrinking) furry community on Xhitter and every vote counts.

@Frankensteinbeck: You mean I’m not the only weirdo jackal around here? Isn’t that a thing.

I know the artist that drew Albedo back in the day, Steve Gallacci, and know a guy that’s been around longer than me that went by ErmaFelna. Back then, everyone knew everyone else, pretty much. This was 4 years before the World Wide Web and about 2 years before the first furry-themed convention came into being.

Funny story about Jenora Feuer, aka ErmaFelna. I recently created a character from a race that one of the first furry-fandom artists, Ken Sample (our first POC, too) drew – in 1993. Once. It appeared in a fanzine and, like so much of the art from the pre-Web era, disappeared. I changed their features some, rebooted the species, and created a character in it.

Sylia’s first picture wasn’t even out of the rough sketch stage when Erma piped up, “Isn’t that a [insert race name here]?” Outed, before I even had gotten started. 😂 I found out the hard way that day there are older dinosaurs than me floating around.

So, the politics of fandom, and a short break from the neverending horrors of the world.

I commission a lot of art. Some of it is around a particular theme that, while SFW, is closely associated with a kink within furry fandom. So commissioning SFW-only artists for it can be… dicey. I read Terms of Service and Will/Won’t Draw lists closely. But Nicnak’s TOS was… a little hazy on this theme.

So I asked ErmaFelma about it. He’s a dinosaur older than me, and quite familiar with Nicnak the artist. He though it was perfectly fine, and said she’d seen her draw this theme before. So I took my chances and asked her to draw one of this theme.

    This happened: https://youtu.be/ABdwgZLjtk0?si=57WoJwW8Bnmpn2Yu

I always, always, respect an artist when they nix a proposal – no means no, after all, and you don’t want an artist uncomfortable with your theme to draw it. Nobody wins then.

But ErmaFelna has some ‘splainin’ to do. I don’t enjoy being shot down hard like that, because it means I proposed something far out of bounds. That’s awkward for me, and for the artist. And EF was just plain dead wrong about what this artist was and wasn’t willing to do. Getting my proposal called a kink piece and pointed to the TOS that I already read did not help, but since 95% of people in this fandom are young men that want nothing more in the world than to Get Some, it’s an easy assumption to make and I got tarred with it.

Oy. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you end up with egg all over your face. Guess I’ll be double-checking any advice I get from ErmaFela from now on!

“The right of broadcasters to speak freely is rooted in the First Amendment,” Rosenworcel said in a statement. “Threats against broadcast stations for airing content that conflicts with the government’s views are dangerous and undermine the fundamental principle of free speech.”

    (Freedom of Press Foundation says:)

A governor who is confident in his policies and secure in his leadership would welcome debate and correct statements he believes are misleading rather than trying to weaponize trash disposal laws against the free press.”

“But DeSantis is not that governor. His administration’s conduct would be silly if it weren’t such a transparent bully tactic,” he added. “Floridians care about the First Amendment, which is why DeSantis’ outrageous censorship campaigns keep failing. We hope the news outlets he targets will not only ignore him but loudly shame him.”
