Tonight or tomorrow we will be kicking off our big push with a post to complete our North Carolina fundraising.
So why not check out Kamala’s rally today in North Carolina?
Early voting starts on Thursday in North Carolina, so let’s try to get our funds in their hands by then, shall we?
Ballot curing can start as soon as early voting starts on Thursday!
We have new Angel matches for all three:
- NC Black Alliance
- North Carolina Asian Americas Together
- NC Candidates
Matching up to $250 per person per thermometer. To be matched, tell us about your donation in the comments or in an email to WaterGirl.
Open thread.
Update: to make it easy for you…
Still an open thread!
WaterGirl
Sweet. If my lip reading is any good, when she came on stage and acknowledged the young man who had introduced her, Kamala said:
“Good job [ then I missed a couple of words] then “proud of you”.
She is such a nurturing person!
japa21
@WaterGirl: The only words I am any good at lip reading tend to not be mentioned in polite company.
Another Scott
I got an e-mail today:
“As you may know, the Senate race in NE has changed in the past week – we are now up in multiple polls against Deb Fischer. We appreciate everything you have done so far, but we need more of your support.
Dan Osborn would like to chat on the phone to give you an update on the race …”
The work of WG, the angels, and every jackal helping out here is having a positive effect. B-J is the little engine that punches way above our weight!
Lots of good people live in NC and deserve better representation. We’ve got a chance to help make it happen, for them and for all of us.
+$250 ea for these 3 thermometers.
Forward!!
Cheers,
Scott.
Ivan X
I apologize for my lack of competence, but I am overwhelmed by thermometer choices. Is there a “give all your money here” spot where some wise person can decide how it can be distributed? There probably is, but could you point it to me again?
Orange is the New Red
Just gave 25 each to the ballot curing folks.
WaterGirl
@Ivan X: The only way to do that is to be an Angel. Angels say “I have X $ amount” and then tell me any parameters.
Anywhere from: I want it to only go to this group up to this amount per person -> Just tell me how much to put in which thermometer, and when.
So we can do that if you want. Send me email if you want to talk about it.
But these 3 thermometers are our big push before we start looking at House races or down-ballot races that are tied or close to it, where a little boost of funds in the last few weeks can help them print more literature of buy social media ads.
So you really can’t go wrong with any of these. The first two are funds for ballot curing for the two organizations that work with black and asian american youth (fixing small details that make the vote not count if they aren’t fixed).
Based on previous years, they expect 150,000 ballots to need curing in NC.
The candidates are the 3 races our NC Black Alliance contact said are the most strategic in NC.
HinTN
@Another Scott: You inspire me! One C note ($100) to each organization. Thanks to WG for setting these up and to all the jackals who make it happen.
HinTN
@WaterGirl: Ballot curing is a big deal and I’m proud to see North Carolina allowing it.
Ivan X
@WaterGirl: Thanks!

$75 to each from me. Let’s keep this going!
BenInNM
Put in $25 to each one
Geminid
@WaterGirl: Yesterday you asked me about Rep. Marie Gluesnkamp Perez; polling shows her tied with Republican Joe Kent in the WA03 district (a rematch). Per Open Secrets, Perez had raised $6.6 million and had $3.8 unspent, while Kent trailed with 1,33 million raised and $585,000 in the bank. I think this was after the 3rd Quarter.
Outside groups are spending a lot in the Portland market for both candidates. Or rather, against both candidates as most of ads are attack ads.
In the Oregon race across the Columbia River to the sputhest, Democrat Janelle Bynum is polling even with freshman Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer. As of June 30 Chavez-DeRemer raised $4 million while Bynum raised 2.4 mil. Bynum had an edge in Portland media buys by outside groups, with 4.3 million spent compared to $3 million for Chavez-DeRemer.
These districts are very similar demographically, and my hunch is they’ll go the same way Election Night even though Perez’s district is slightly redder than Bynum’s. A recent poll showing Perez tied also found VP Harris trailing by 5 points in the WA03 and Senator Cantwell trailing by 3.
Jackie
O/T, but had to share!
A republican politician from NV was arrested last night for possessing illegal loaded firearms outside of TCFG’s rally in Coachella:
He must be a Never-Trump GOPer. But still… WTH?!?
Chet Murthy
@Jackie: Oh, idunno, I wouldn’t be surprised if a Trumper G(r)OPer showed up with his weapons “to support our candidate”. Maybe to patrol for, y’know, shooters (b/c the seekrit serviz, they’re not doin’ their damn jobs, hawk spit spit). They’re Stoopid that way.
Jackie
@Chet Murthy: Maybe! I could see that scenario as you described…
eclare
I just watched the SNL cold open from last night. I don’t usually watch SNL, but this had several LOL moments for me.

OTOH maybe he’s just a nutter. I mean, Crooks was one of ’em. This yutz is a sovereign citizen and all, ha! Reminds me of Travis Bickle. That he got a masters’ degree doesn’t count for much.
Ivan X
Just gave to all because I mean. Ok who’s next WG
eclare
@Chet Murthy:
I read the article. The man’s identity card (drivers’ license?) raised suspicion. How the hell did the police not notice his shotgun? It was around 100 degrees, so I’m assuming he wasn’t wearing a coat. Shotguns are big!
Timill
@eclare: Maybe it was a (fake) police/SS ID? Someone who would have weapons, but you check ID anyway.
Quinerly
My old neck of the woods. I grew up a few miles from Greenville, NC. My family on both sides goes back many generations…..settled from Ireland, Scotland and England. There once was a Quinerly, NC a few miles from Greenville with its own post office, general store.
We need JuJu on this thread. Her neck of the woods.
I went to undergrad in Greenville at East Carolina University. Had beers in 1979 at a college bar (Pantana Bob’s) with Jimmy Buffett after one of his $5 student ticket shows at Minges Coliseum. He came down to the bar after he played his concert.
I think almost all the presidential candidates make stops in Greenville (Pitt County). It’s the largest town in Eastern NC. 90 mins from Raleigh. About 90,000 people now. About the size of Asheville, NC. About 50% White (about the same for the county). HRC carried Pitt County in 2016. Biden beat Trump by close to a 10 point margin in 2020. Pitt County is reliably Blue. Surrounded by Red, though. Sadly, though, a Dem hasn’t taken the state since 2008.
Greenville is the birth place of the first Hardee’s, founded by a friend of my father’s, Wilbur Hardee.
If ever in Pitt County, check out Bum’s Restaurant in Ayden, NC. True eastern NC whole hog barbecue.
This has been your TED talk by a born and breaded North Carolina native.
Alice
$25 each to NCAAT and Black Alliance.
wjca
So much for the regret (expressed by someone in an earlier thread) to the effect of Too bad this wasn’t in Arizona. Might well have been some Arizona trumpies there. And getting their steps in afterwards.
Quinerly
@Quinerly:
And if at Bum’s, get the collards. Ayden, NC, less than 7 miles from Greenville, has the World’s largest “Collard Festival” in the Fall and crowns “Miss Collard” every year. And a parade with collard themed floats!!!
Jackie
@eclare: I can’t believe they released him on $5000 bail. For planning to kill a presidential nominee??? And, his next court appearance isn’t until next year???
Juju
I attended the Kamala rally in Greenville NC. It was fun to meet all the people who were excited to be there, as I was. I have some pictures and you can kind of tell it’s the VP, but I was in the cheap seats, and she’s kind of small and blurred I’m glad I went, but I don’t know if I’d ever do it again. Stadium seats are actually more uncomfortable than cheap plane seats.
ToesInTheSand
Just donated $25 each to all of the 3 NC initiatives. I have a love for the Bryson City/NOC area of NC. Many a hikes in those areas. Apologies if this has already been discussed (life), but I’m curious as to what impact does the Hurricane Helene devastation have on the voting situation in NC?
eclare
@Jackie:
Good points!
eclare
@Juju:
My parents had foldable stadium seat cushions with backs for that reason.
Quinerly
@Juju:
So glad you got to go. One of the highlights, I think, of my mother’s life was seeing Bill Clinton twice. Once in Greenville and once at Grainger Stadium in Kinston. When I cleaned out her desk drawer after her death in 2015, I found both programs that she saved.
Been meaning to catch you on a thread….is your sister still in Carteret County? So cool that time meeting you, your sister,,and your mom at The Ruddy Duck. I think Poco had just come into my life so close to 10 years ago.
Jay
@Jackie:
Technically, all he is charged with is having a loaded gun in his vehicle, and an illegal in California, extended magazine.
Possible future charges, ( forgery, false ID),
Was he planning to kill Dolt45? Who knows.
Gloria DryGarden
Im ready for such a nurturing person to be our president !
dmckwski
25 to all 3
Memory Pallas
$25 each to the two NC ballot curing efforts.
WaterGirl
@ToesInTheSand: I haven’t seen a clear answer to that question yet. Hopefully someone else has!
Sister Golden Bear
@Jay: Extremely commonplace for police to hold suspects on “slam dunk” charges such as possession of illegal firearms
while other potential charges are being investigated because it’s a way to ensure the suspect remains in custody. Same thing happened in the golf course case where it took a week or more for the attempted assassinaion charges to be filed. So we’ll see.ETA: Saw that he bailed out for $5,000. Still might be additional changes but obviously they didn’t consider him a major threat.
Juju.
@Quinerly: It takes you 90 minutes to drive from Raleigh to Greenville? B’s Barbecue or Parker’s is what I seem to hear about more often. I will eat NC barbecue, but I don’t really seek it out. The last time I had some was at a neighbor’s pig pickin. I had forgotten about Pantana Bob’s. I never actually set foot there, I wasn’t a cool kid like Quinerly. I did actually eat at a place called the Crow’s Nest after Crash and Burn night at WRONG way Corrigan’s. I don’t know if those are places Quinerly ever gave her biddness. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I discovered that Hillary won Pitt County
Not a TED talk. I’m not as qualified, I have only lived here since 1979.
Jay
@Sister Golden Bear:
They are out on bail, so white, male.
Being a Sovereign, the Law tends to treat them gently because they tend to engage in paper terrorism.
Juju.
@Quinerly: My sister lives in Emerald Isle. She and her husband finally finished the house renovation and moved.
I met Bill Clinton when I lived in Arkansas and he was running for his first term as governor. I told him I was not old enough to vote, and he told me to make sure to vote for him when I was old enough to vote. I actually did, but not for governor.
The Ruddy Duck closed because the owners retired. I still have a sad over that.
You had just gotten Poco. Time truly does fly. We were sweet young things back then. My mother is 91, but she’s in advanced dementia and I am taking care of her. It sounds worse than it is, she’s still capable of taking care of herself, but the things she has forgotten or things that baffle her now is sometimes so hard to take. It truly is the long goodbye.
Quinerly
@Juju.:
Thanks for the chuckles. The Google tells me Greenville to Raleigh 1 hr 22 minutes.
I prefer the fried chicken livers and Brunswick Stew at Parkers. Horrendous slaw, though…too sweet, like that iced tea. Parkers has taken all the grease and bits of browned pork fat and skin out of the barbecue to cater to the non Pitt County born folks. Probably the transplants that arrived in the late 1970’s who just didn’t understand eastern NC, vinegar based barbecue. At least that’s what my daddy used to say. Skylight Inn in Ayden is very good. It’s been written up in Southern Living. I still prefer Bum’s with the grease and pork fat bits.
I stepped into Chapter X back in the day and shagged a bit…..”Under the Boardwalk” and “I Love Beach Music” but really too preppy for me….I preferred my Embers, Chairman of the Board, and Drifters at The Circle in AB (The Jolly Knave, owned by Bill Harper, ECU alum). Nothing like a night of shagging while hearing the waves and smelling the salt air, but I digress. In Greenville, I was an Attic and Pantana’s chick. And the Elbow Room for HH on Fridays before the disco started in the evening. How many times can you really hear Rod the Mod sing “Da Ya Think I Am Sexy?”
I guess we could look it up…pretty sure we would have to go back 30 plus years to find a Repug presidential candidate that carried Pitt County. Pitt has been a Blue dot as long as I can remember. Surprised you didn’t remember HRC carried NC.
This has been part two of my TED Talk.😎
Quinerly
@Juju.:
Next time MHC trivia comes up, you can wow “them” with this….The old Dee Gees/later Ruddy Duck building was the original Sanitary Restaurant building in the 1930’s.
Loved that old building. Loved The Duck and the horseshoe shaped bar…especially on winter visits home.
Juju.
@Quinerly:
I’ve never cared much for Parker’s but a lot of the people I know do, and they are transplants, so you may have something there. I always snickered at the term shagging in regard to dancing, but I grew up watching Monty Python and watching British sitcoms.
I have bad news for you. Hillary did not win NC in 2016. It was painfully close, but she lost. I still get a tear in my eyes when I think about it. I called and knocked on doors and such for her.
Quinerly
@Juju.: oh, I knew she didn’t win NC. Obama won in 2008 and that was the last Dem to take the state.
I will have to look back at my comments. I was speaking strictly about Pitt County pretty much always going Blue…usually by 3 plus points. I always thought that curious since Lenoir County right next door was always so Red. Influence of the university, transplants, and medical school in Greenville, I suppose.
So sorry about your mom. I went thru dementia with my dad…his started with a head injury in 2001. He died in 2008 with pancreatic cancer. It truly is the long good bye. Hugs. If you ever travel this way, door always open for a visit. You are good people, JuJu.💙🩵💙
Gloria DryGarden
@Jay: paper terrorism. Infinitely more widespread in its damages.
ewrunning
I donated $25 each to the three of them early this morning, but forgot to put it in the comments.
Gloria DryGarden
@ToesInTheSand: I found an article about that on my google feed, and put the link in the thread a few days ago.
I have a friend near Hendersonville, who’s been affected. It’s pretty intense. I’ve been thinking for a week, how will these people vote? Eclare commented yesterday that nc has same day registration, but if there is a deadline, they’ll extend it for folks in the affected area.
People are still not in contact in the more isolated areas in the hills there in WNC. I did read that everyone reported missing in Rutherford county has been found. A spot of good news.
People are really hurting up in WNC : my friend fears they’ll be forgotten or ignored.
Chet Murthy
@Gloria DryGarden: They won’t be.
