Propositions, Amendments, Ballot Initiatives, Referendums… whatever your state calls them, it’s time to start sharing information.
We have this sixth set from Geoduck. If you live in a state with a number of these and you want to put something together, please let me know.
THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS TOGETHER.
And big thanks to everyone who has put something together this year!
WASHINGTON STATE
Washington statewide ballot measures
[I am a semi-lurker. 50-ish slacker, life-long WA state resident who currently lives in the SW corner of the state. It’s pronounced gooey-duck.]The summary:
Initiative #2066: No
Initiative #2109: No
Initiative #2117: No
Initiative #2124: No
The details:
All four of these pieces of garbage have been horked up by a group led by the wealthy MAGAt hedge-fund manager Brian Heywood, (he’s reportedly spent 6 million dollars on this) so I’m not going to go into long detailed descriptions here.
Initiative #2066:
Rolls back regulations trying to make new houses be more energy efficient, like offering a rebate to use electrical appliances instead of natural gas.
I will vote NO.
Repeals the current tax on capital gains. Despite the state’s commie reputation Washington’s tax structure is actually very regressive (sales tax, no state income tax), and this will only make it worse.
I will vote NO.
Initiative #2117:
Repeals and bans The Climate Commitment Act. Heywood and company want to dump more toxins into the environment without penalty. Also takes an ax to the state transportation budget, which is already stretched.
I will vote NO.
Initiative #2124 :
Would cripple the state’s Long-Term Care insurance program by making payment for it optional. A giveaway to the private insurance industry.
I will vote NO.
Discuss!
Update: This isn’t argument, it’s abuse. You want room 12A, next door. Colorado is one door left, and Nevada is one door right.
WaterGirl
There are 3 voting initiative posts this afternoon – Colorado, Washington State, and Nevada – and they are posted just 5 minutes apart. I figure no one will be interested in more than one of those. :-)
Dangerman
I’ve seen pics of gooey-ducks. Kinda looks like a guy holding a package. No, not an Amazon package.
Never had one. Supposed to be good.

@WaterGirl: Question: Is a minor victory lap for myself too much to ask for?
WaterGirl
@Anonymous At Work: I’m sorry! All of you who are writing these up are awesome!
Just trying to get them all out here as people send them to me – before people suffer through the process alone and already have their ballots in the email. :-)

Thanks for the posting! (WA resident here.) Is Heywood the return of Tim Eyman? Every time I filled out a ballot here I’d be annoyed by the endless stream of initiatives objecting to some budget allocation the legislature (i.e., the representatives we elected to do things like make budget allocations) had made.
Jackie
@cursorial: Oh geez… Tim Eyman… totally ashamed he’s from my neck of the woods. He’s since moved away, but his name still makes me cringe 😬

Another WA resident (the great city of Tacoma!) here. Thanks much Geoduck, you’ve just confirmed all my suspicions. No all the way down. And yes our tax system is insanely regressive, and the name Eyman sends me into immediate PTSD. PS I love WA and can’t imagine living anywhere else, but I hate our initiative system, it’s so easily exploited by billionaires and government haters.

@WaterGirl: thank you so much for posting these! I’m generally opposed to initiatives (voters usually have only a hazy idea at best of what they would do), but since we’re stuck with them it helps to have good information.
WaterGirl
@beckya57: Glad you are finding them helpful. Still hoping for a few more states. :-)
I really appreciate the folks who are writing these up for their states!
Geoduck
@cursorial: Heywood is evidently doing this with his own money instead of being the obnoxious front-man Eyman was, but yes.
And I don’t know what went wrong with the font-formatting on “Initiative #2117:”, but that was my fault, not WaterGirl’s.
Anonymous At Work
@Geoduck: Someone told me an election cycle or three ago that he was convicted of defrauding supporters on his rat-fking Amendments.
weasel
@cursorial: I was thinking/wondering the same thing!

I’ll also note that it’s sad to see local meteorologist-celeb Cliff Mass continue his headlong plunge into crankdom by supporting this crap.

Watergirl is 100% right.
The carbon tax initiative has a big ad campaign funded by fossil fuel industry that is trying to convince people that it is responsible for their high gas taxes. So it is probably the most likely to pass. But they all need to be voted down.
Sans Simian
@WaterGirl: the category link still says 2020, eek!
Do you already have a submission for Texas? If not I can send you one.
Mike in oly
@Geoduck: Cliff Mass has been just awful for years now. So sad for someone so prominent in his field.
WaterGirl
@Sans Simian: I do not have Texas, yes please send!
WaterGirl
@Sans Simian: eek! is right. I had completely tuned out the “2020” part. Fixed now, thanks.

@Dangerman: Yep, they’re dick-clams.
